Welcome to Ducati Redline Magazine

Our future is now In facing the challenges that have arisen during its 90 plus years of history, Ducati has never backed down. Quite the opposite in fact, as our very DNA as a company sees us exploit times of change in order to rethink, evolve, and make the necessary transformations to ensure we are always ahead of the times.

In this sense, 2020 could have been one of the most negative years in our history. We were forced to stop production for seven weeks, peak-season. We had to go out on track without the support of our fans and the world’s Ducatisti even had to go without their favourite event of all, World Ducati Week. Despite this, we did not lose heart but intensified our efforts, transforming a difficult moment into yet another turning point in Ducati history.

We have rethought all our work processes with a view to smart working and strengthened our technological infrastructure to improve the company and protect the health of staff. We have launched Ducati Cares, to allow all our customers to enjoy the professionalism and quality of Ducati dealers in complete safety.

We had a record second half year, which saw us improve with respect to initial forecasts and consolidate our growth across various markets.

And we also, and above all, brought Ducati Corse back to the top of the MotoGP World Championship, winning the Constructor’s World Title for the second time in our history.

This is an important milestone for the entire company because it highlights the validity of the technological innovations we have developed in recent years, transferring these from the Desmosedici GP so as to enrich all our production bikes. The 2021 range is a wonderful example of this, with products that feature absolutely cutting-edge technical and technological content. Like the Multistrada V4, the fourth generation of a family that, since its conception, has never ceased to amaze us.

Today’s model fills us with enthusiasm and pride as it marks a turning point, not only for Ducati but for the entire motorcycle industry.

Or the exuberant Diavel 1260 Lamborghini, the result of collaboration between two Motor Valley giants, or the new Monster, the latest incarnation of our iconic naked, more compact, lightweight, and stripped down than ever before.

An incredibly advanced range of products that take our values of Style, Sophistication, Performance and Trust to new heights.

Shaping lightness

With the Superleggera V4, Ducati engineers have been able to let their imagination run wild in terms of technical solutions, materials, and processes. The aim was to sharpen every feature of every single component so as to achieve ultimate performance.

The pursuit of the extreme is a very familiar concept for Ducati Corse as it prepares its machines for the MotoGP championship. The difference, in this case, lies in the need to meet another target, fundamental for a production bike, or rather maximum safety levels and reliability standards.

Each of the 500 models produced must be perfect and this is an essential concept that has strongly influenced the research and development work. To this end, and as in the aerospace field, a particularly high number of virtual

simulations and componentry tests were carried out, including thermal imaging, tomography, and ultrasound controls, as well as the testing of one of the most precious and lightweight materials of all, carbon.

The Superleggera V4 is the world’s only road-homologated bike to have its entire loadbearing structure created in composite materials. A design choice that involves the frame, sub-frame, swingarm and rims to obtain a weight saving of 6.7 kg. This solution called for intense and expensive research activity in order to ensure extreme performance while respecting reliability and homologation parameters.

One example is the work carried out on the rear swingarm, a component that, for the very first time, incorporates unidirectional carbon, a very difficult material to manipulate.

This type of carbon is highperformance, thanks to its weight-stiffness ratio, but it is also particularly anisotropic and so difficult to stabilise, particularly if used to model complex surfaces. In this case, morphological optimisation posed one of the greatest challenges as the structural team conducted its virtual resistance simulations. The result is a never-before-seen specific stiffness ratio, which contributes to a bike that is lighter in terms of its every peripheral load and therefore even more agile and easy to handle. And it is also more stable thanks to the new geometry. The Superleggera V4 has a dry weight of 159 kg (- 16 kg vs Panigale V4), which drops to 152.2 kg once the supplied racing kit is mounted.

Molecules make the dream The balance between lightness and power is particularly evident in the design of the engine. Ducati engine designers were given free rein to develop unconventional solutions.

They therefore had access to precious materials and were also able to make use of complex processing usually only accessible to the racing world.

Every single component was thoroughly analysed in order to understand its development possibilities and test new materials and geometries. Only then was action taken, with the decision to use different materials or remove elements.

Titanium replaces steel for all the crankcase and head screws for example. Simultaneously, the work to reduce weight centred around the components of the V4, even a few grams making the difference in some cases. This operation involved the oil pumps, starting gears and camshafts, for a weight saving of 2.8 kg with respect to the version mounted on the Panigale V4 S.

The physics behind the thrill

1.54 HP/kg

Hence, the lightness of the Superleggera V4 is the result of a long process of subtraction and substitution. Particularly symbolic is the main addition to the bike, or rather its aerodynamic biplane appendages. Inspired by the 2016 Ducati MotoGP, the Superleggera V4 aerodynamics package ensures a downforce of 50 kg at 270 km/h, 20 kg more than that produced by the wings of the MY20 Panigale V4 and V4 R. This force allows the rider to fully exploit the bike’s potential and docile nature while enjoying a level of performance that goes beyond its stated horsepower. At the Jerez de la Frontera circuit, and thanks to its aerodynamics alone, the Superleggera V4 gained six metres along the straight coming out of the final turn with respect to the MY19 Panigale V4 without the aerodynamics package. A difference that serves to highlight the synthesis of ambitious engineering, refined materials, and innovative solutions that this bike represents.

The Diavel has always been synonymous with innovation, born for the road but with the behaviour of a sports thoroughbred. Its unmistakable design makes it a style icon, a symbol of the Made in Italy, and the winner of some of the most prestigious international prizes such as the “Red Dot Award” and “Good Design Award”.

With the Diavel, every detail is an expression of personality, a personality that outdoes itself

with the typical style traits of the Lamborghini Sián FKP 37. The wheels for example, forged and enhanced with the “Oro Electrum” colour, a perfect match for the typical Ducati red of the Brembo brake callipers. Or the air vents and radiator covers, created in carbon fibre and developed by layering floating elements on top of the main structure. The attention to detail is immediately clear in the livery, which stands out for its “Verde Gea” colour scheme, created with the same paints used for the Lamborghini Sián

FKP 37 and representative of Lamborghini design, as is the hexagon and “Y” detail seen, respectively, in the form of the exhaust and aesthetic detailing on the saddle. Last but not least, the number 63, so important to the Sant’Agata Bolognese manufacturer, which was founded in the year 1963. Here it relates to the 630 exclusive examples of the Diavel 1260 Lamborghini that will be built, each featuring its own serial number on the aluminium plate affixed to the frame.

Lamborghini Sián FKP 37 The FKP 37 acronym is a tribute to Ferdinand Karl Piëch, born in 1937. In acquiring Automobili Lamborghini for Audi AG, Piëch was able to strengthen the brand while retaining both its identity as a manufacturer of exclusive Italian super sportscars and its engineering and design DNA. The name Sián, which means ‘lightning’ in Bolognese dialect, refers to the first electric motor in a production Lamborghini and represents the inescapable link between the company and its territory.

The throttle bodies of the V4 Granturismo are activated by a dedicated electric motor to obtain an advantageous delivery curve and consistent torque at all speeds.

The six-speed gear ratios are optimised to exploit the significant engine torque and ensure the right response even when riding with a passenger or at low speeds.

Adopting the counter-rotating crankshaft – borrowed from MotoGP – allows for a reduction in the gyroscopic effect that the wheels have on the vehicle, thus improving handling and agility and reducing pitch in acceleration and braking. This technical decision heightens safety and riding comfort, not only on track but particularly during everyday use on the road or when travelling with a loaded bike.

07 Rear cylinder deactivation, a system deriving from the Desmosedici Stradale, intervenes when the engine is at a minimum by switching off the rear bank, the one closer to the saddle, to improve thermal comfort for both rider and passenger by lowering the temperature.

The 70° staggered layout of the crank pins combined with the 90° V engine layout allows for a firing order known as “Twin Pulse”. The result is a sound similar to that of a twin, but with a rich delivery at all speeds that is always perfectly manageable, particularly when exiting the turn.

Double radar Technology The Multistrada V4 is the first bike in the world to come complete with front and rear radar.

This experimental technology from Ducati in collaboration with the Department of Electronics, Communications and Bioengineering at the Politecnico di Milano has been developed and

industrialised together with Bosch, setting a new level of excellence in terms of comfort and riding assistance. The radar positioned on the front section of the vehicle controls the ACC, or Adaptive Cruise Control function. Activated and adjusted using dedicated buttons on the left block, the ACC

makes use of calibrated and progressive braking and acceleration to automatically regulate the bike’s distance (selected according to three levels) from other vehicles when riding at speeds of between 30 and 160 km/h. This makes for a more comfortable ride, particularly when covering long distances on the motorway.

This car-derived system has been developed according to the dynamics and ergonomics of a two-wheeled vehicle, with maximum deceleration limited to -0.5 g, to ensure that the rider maintains full control of the bike in every situation.

Destination Multistrada V4 More than 120,000 km to build a bike that knows no limits The Multistrada V4 journey began in the various departments of the Borgo Panigale factory. Right from the earliest stages, test riders worked closely with the Ducati engineers to develop the kind of technical content that would allow the bike to best express its off-road spirit.

Months and months on the roads – and dirt tracks – of Italy, testing solutions and analysing bike behaviour. So as to guarantee future owners of the new Multistrada V4 all the excitement and comfort of a worry-free ride, Ducati test riders Alessandro Valia and Andrea Rossi were sure to leave no stone unturned.

The real work began with the ‘road test’ phase, which saw the test riders taking the prototype bikes out on dirt paths and dusty tracks to carefully analyse and evaluate bike behaviour. Starting with the dynamics.

Always the right set-up Obstacle-proof suspension Raising the bar is in the Multistrada family’s very DNA. And this means that one of the test riders’ main goals was to ensure that the dynamic behaviour of the Multistrada V4 would make off-road riding simple and efficient for all riders, of any level.

A goal that is achieved thanks to the very latest Skyhook suspension, which allows for a set-up that adapts to the riding conditions and the rider’s needs in real time. In this way, less experienced riders can enjoy an agile bike that offers maximum levels of feeling and comfort, while the more expert benefit from the V4 Granturismo’s high-speed stability and prompt response to any request for power, at all speeds.

The placement of the engine and specific chassis solutions allowed for the identification of an optimal position that offers significant ground clearance but also guarantees excellent handling right from low speeds.

While riding off-road, the test riders were able to ensure that the bike would respond easily when in low gear, when turning in a tight space, and in all those situations where the rider is facing some sort of obstacle.

The rider will always have a sense of real control and mastery of the bike and can fully enjoy the ride, even in conditions that require real precision.

But even at the most extreme latitudes, the Multistrada V4 was able to confirm its status as conqueror.

DTC, adjustable according to eight levels, allows for optimum control in very varied conditions, whether dry and cold, wet, snowy with standard tyres or even snowy with spiked tyres. The front headlight always guarantees the right brightness, and, with the support of additional lights and the cornering function, nothing is left to chance, even when travelling at night.

Even in the toughest conditions, the on-board computer ensures the

From Barcelona to Cap De Creus. An alternative route along Spain’s most famous coast.

The mimes on Las Ramblas, the unique flair of Gaudì’s architecture and the bars of the Olympic port. The best-known Barcelona is one of music, art and movida. But for those who want to break the mould, we have an alternative route to suggest. And when it comes to escaping the routine, there’s only one bike that can guide us, the Diavel 1260.

Our starting point is Montjuic hill. Climb up and you’ll soon have a different take on the city. 173 metres high, Montjuic is a mountain in the heart of the city that offers a breath-taking view out over the maze of streets, teeming with life. We climb up early in the morning, just after dawn, when the houses, buildings and stores are still slumbering, so there is the thrilling sensation that we are witnessing the reawakening of that untamed Catalonian spirit.

But once the light comes up, it’s time to take the road that heads north, towards the Costa Brava.

Our first destination is Tossa de Mar, “the blue paradise” of painter Marc Chagall.

The second chapter of The Way Out – A Journey in Search of Freedom starts from the centre of Barcelona before escaping into the wild heart of the Costa Brava, where the Pyrenees infringe on blue waves rippled by the wind and the roads chase each other up the mountain side.

And after a visit to the Dalì museum, we get back in the saddle and twist the throttle as we head for the Cap de Creus natural park.

Michael, welcome to Ducati Redline Magazine, we’ve been looking forward to seeing you here! It looks like it was love at first sight between you and the new Monster. What struck you most about this bike?

M - It’s true, I really like the bike! What struck me most was definitely its overall look. Just seeing it from a distance in the garage, I could already appreciate its sports lines. And then as I got closer and could make out all the details, the Monster revealed its full personality. I might be younger than the bike, but I know exactly what it means to the Ducati fans and bikers in general. Having the chance to get a sneak peak, in my favourite environment, the garage at a track, was really exciting. Not to mention having the chance to test it on track!

very precise, the gear shifting clean. And then there’s the new frame, in the style of that of the Panigale V4. The bike is light and agile but gives you a feeling of real stability, even in braking. It’s a really fun bike and I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to spend time on track, whether just having fun or testing yourself and trying to push a little further.

Tell us all about it! What were your sensations riding it on track?

M - The sensations were surprising to say the least! It hadn’t been long since my last outing with the Superbike, and it’s not that I didn’t notice any differences of course, but I really didn’t expect this kind of performance. The Monster struck me not just in terms of its aesthetics, but also its performance. Although it’s a road bike, it allowed me to push and ride fast. The engine offers full delivery but is still easy to manage. The gearbox is

Nothing is superfluous on the Monster. The entire bike is designed to emphasise the personality of its rider. What kind of rider are you on track?

M - I like to ride in a smooth, precise way. I don’t like any twitching and prefer fluidity, which is exactly what I found in the Monster. I felt at ease as soon as I got on the bike. It’s compact and the riding position is comfortable and easy. It’s also perfect when you want to push.

Your wrists don’t get tired, in fact you can be very incisive when changing direction.

How would you describe yourself?

M - I’m a very passionate rider.

Perhaps I follow my instincts a little too much at times, but over the years I’ve worked to turn this trait into a strength of mine. In our work, sometimes things don’t go to plan. At times like that I might get agitated, that’s normal, but I always try to stay positive in order to really understand the problems and resolve them together with the team.

M- I think a rider’s strength must always be their head.

That’s what allows you to make the difference. If you don’t continuously try to improve in that respect, it’s difficult, if not impossible, to compete in a championship like Superbike, where you’re up against real champions. But it’s not easy to train your head. You need to work hard, all the time. And try to learn as much as possible from each race you run. Particularly those that go badly..

So, in that case, last season cannot be particularly helpful to you.

M- Yes, it’s true, the 2020 season exceeded expectations. But only up to a certain point. The feeling I had with the team and the Panigale V4 R was great right from the initial tests. I immediately knew I could do well, because when you feel at ease on the bike, it’s more likely you’ll achieve strong results.

M- I hope so too! I was born a Ducatista, and riding with these colours is a dream come true for me. Nevertheless, I consider my arrival in the Ducati team a starting point, not a destination.

All I ask is that the fans support us throughout the year, as only Ducatisti know how. Even in a situation like we have right now, us riders are still always able to feel the fans’ passion and so it’s important they are there. So, my message to them is to believe in us, also because I’m sure we can do well this year. I won’t say how well because I’m not someone who likes to talk about their goals. I prefer to achieve them.

The new Monster represents all the essence of Ducati in the most compact, clean, and lightweight form possible. As the name suggests, Monster, nothing more. The formula has remained unchanged since 1993: a sports engine, perfect for road use, combined with a Superbikederived frame. Or rather everything you need to have fun, each and every day.

The heart of the Monster is the Testastretta 11°, a 4-valve, liquid-cooled twin with 111 HP and desmodromic timing. Its aluminium front frame, inspired by that of the Panigale V4, is short and affixed directly to the engine heads. Lightweight, it contributes to keeping the bike’s dry weight down to just 166 kg.

It is a modern reinterpretation of the recipe that led to the birth of the Naked segment, updated to satisfy new generations of Monsteristi.

The new Monster is the sports naked for one and all. The ideal bike when starting out in the two-wheeled world, but also the perfect everyday companion for the expert rider. This, because it is lightweight, easy to handle and fast. In other words, a fun bike.

The new Monster possesses all the model’s distinctive traits, from the “bison back” tank, to the circular headlight “set into the shoulders”, the clean tailpiece, and the scene-stealing engine.

sporty, elegant, sophisticated, and technological design. The 937 cc Testastretta 11°, liquid-cooled and with Euro 5 homologation, is a sports engine but is also perfect for road use. With respect to the previous 821, the 90° V twin has grown in terms of its displacement, power, and torque, offering greater rideability and a reduced weight (-2.4 kg), which contributes to the bike’s overall lightness. It now supplies 111 HP at 9250 rpm with 9.5 Nm of torque at just 6500 rpm.

The Monster is a modern bike, perfect for younger riders. For this reason, a 35kW version is also available for those with an A2 licence.

There’s new energy in MotoGP The upcoming 2021 MotoGP season will see the factory Ducati team take to the start line with a new Title Partner, Lenovo, and two new young, determined and talented riders in the shape of Jack Miller and Francesco “Pecco” Bagnaia.

It is always exciting when preparing for the start of a new race season. Perhaps even more so in 2021, as Ducati heads into the new year as 2020 Constructors’ World Champion.

I – I started for fun with my brother when I was at high school.

Then, when I moved to Bologna for university, I joined Sempre Avanti for the first time. And it was there that I started to really focus on the Muay Thai discipline.

I fell in love with it immediately, during the first training session, and realised I wanted more.

I - In 2010. The adrenaline I felt in that moment was what spurred me on to continue and set increasingly ambitious goals for myself.

Your first title?

I - Italian women’s champion in 2011.

In what way has this discipline influenced you as a person?

I - It has taught me to be a more balanced individual and gives me the strength to face any adversity or challenge in life as if I were in the ring.

Sometimes I fail, that’s normal, but I never back down and will always get up even stronger than before.

How do you ensure your mental strength?

I - With dedication and training. If I don’t feel totally ‘done in’ after a training session, it means I’m not giving it my all.

And so I should carry on. But without the support of those around me and those who have spurred me on, I couldn’t have got to where I am.

Are you also an instructor at Sempre Avanti?

I - When I can, I help out with the children and youngsters preparing for competition. I wouldn’t call them my pupils, I think of them more like teammates.

The new full-LED headlight and side air vents are reminiscent of the sharp look and profile of the Panigale V4, but it is with its new fairings that the SuperSport 950 really shows off its new, more sports-oriented nature. While the tyres of their Desert Sled bikes sink happily into the mud, the Scrambler girls feel their technique improve along with their sense of satisfaction. And for those who don’t fancy enduro?

There’s always the asphalt of the Basic Riding School, or perhaps some sliding in the dust at the Flat Track School. Different styles, similar enjoyment.

1.00 pm It’s time for the Scrambler BBQ! With ‘helmet hair’ and dirty faces, everyone comes together at the table for a tasty lunch in a convivial, relaxed atmosphere, in classic Scrambler style. And if someone wants to take a break from riding and head into the kitchen, there’s the Scrambler Cooking Class, an authentic cookery lesson led by a real chef!

2.30 pm The Riding Schools resume under the watchful eyes of the Dueruote instructors! The teaching and fun continue, whether it’s on the asphalt in the plaza, on the enduro track, or around the Flat Track oval. And that’s not all, as the grassy areas around the Country House offer music, relaxation areas complete with sunbeds, test rides of the entire range, foosball and ping-pong tournaments, and an infinite swell of positive vibrations.

Sleddin’ USA Jordan Graham has racing in his blood. Desert racing in particular. As does Ricky Diaz, raised to believe in “speed, style and fun”. When Ducati USA asked the two Fasthouse riders to compete in the Mint 400, the answer was bound to be yes.

For off-road enthusiasts, the Mint 400 is not just a race. It’s the oldest and most prestigious race in America, involving 500 teams from all over the world and across more than 50 classes. A fairly obvious one, first place. The bike? The coolest and dirtiest of all, the Scrambler Desert Sled.

It makes its Mint 400 debut in the Hooligan class, the two Fasthouse riders’ favourite. The two Desert Sleds are very quick right from the off, leaving their rivals to, quite literally, eat their dust. Just a few kilometres in, and the only trace of Jordan Graham and Ricky Diaz are their tracks in the sand. After completing the first lap and refuelling in the pits, the pair are head-to-head, leading the way.

In the final stages, Jordan Graham pushes his Desert Sled to the limit. In his attempts to keep pace, Ricky Diaz suddenly crashes and is forced to retire.

Jordan Graham crosses the line with a time of 4:45.35, having built an unreal 45-minute lead over the second-placed Scramblers of Alexander Smith and Michael Allen. And for all the other competitors, perhaps it’s best that what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.

Transanatolia 2020

A fascinating trip through the wonders of Anatolia, to discover the peninsula that links East and West. This is a good description of the Transanatolia Rally, in fact this is exactly how the organisers promote the competition. Now in its tenth edition, it has become one of the most important events for rally raid enthusiasts.

But the Transanatolia is, first and foremost, an extremely challenging race that sees participants compete in an extended seven-day race, during which rocky terrain alternates with sandy tracks and some particularly fast sections. Like Tuz Gölü, the largest salt lake in Asia Minor, where Andrea Rossi’s Multistrada 1260 Enduro reached a top speed of 203 km/h.

Andrea Rossi is a Ducati test rider and Ducati Riding Academy instructor who specialises in off-road riding.

For Andrea Rossi, competing in the Transanatolia 2020 was a natural consequence of his Multistrada Enduro project development work, begun in 2016.

Aware of the bike’s potential and stability, Rossi raced with a Multistrada 1260 Enduro complete with bull-bar, radiator protection and a homologated silencer, all from the Ducati Performance accessories range and mounted in a standard configuration.

Having set off from the imperial palace in Dolmabahçe on 15 August, the Multistrada 1260 Enduro completed all seven stages without the slightest hesitation, exhibiting all the safety and determination that make it the ideal trailblazer for unforgettable adventures and boundless excitement.

On crossing the finish line in Sile, Andrea Rossi and the Multistrada 1260 Enduro recorded the fastest time in the twin category, and the ninth fastest time overall. An outstanding result, which is added to an impressive list of Ducati off-roading feats, and which makes Andrea Rossi and the Multistrada 1260 Enduro the undisputed heroes of two worlds.

The beating heart of the EmiliaRomagna manufacturing system, Motor Valley is an extraordinary place, home to the brands that have built and fuelled the legend of speed around the world. And the Borgo Panigale firm does this with even more conviction and commitment now that CEO Claudio Domenicali has become president of the Motor Valley Association.

Mr. Domenicali, why, at a time like this, might Motor Valley be able to play a more important role than ever before?

D- We are living in times of great change. Times in which digitalisation,

artificial intelligence and robotisation will drastically change the profile of industrial manufacturing. It will be increasingly possible to replace manual jobs with collaborative robots and a growing number of current jobs will face competition from machines. This is why it is important to continue to invest in expertise. It is essential that the Motor Valley area is strong in terms of its development of technology and expertise, and that this is as distinctive and specific as possible.

Motor Valley comprises a wide variety of companies. How can this diversity translate into added value?

D- Motor Valley represents Made in Italy excellence in the automotive and industrial production chain, and the association is a project that highlights a region’s ability to network and promote the unique products for which it stands out on the international stage. Every brand has its particular characteristics, but the main common denominators are a real passion for competition, which has

allowed, and continues to allow us to develop technology and innovation, and a love for design.

Speaking of innovation, what kind of synergies can develop between two and four-wheel brands?

D- A variety, all with extremely high potential and great reach. I’m thinking about the synergies involved in developing new products and new engineering solutions for example. Like the Superleggera V4 project, which saw collaboration between Ducati and Dallara. The tests carried out in the wind tunnel allowed for the development and testing of new aerodynamic solutions. But the synergies I believe to be most important, as President of the Association, are those relating to expertise, particularly in the long term. Motor Valley needs to be able to “generate new generations”, or rather train talent and know how to ride the technical changes occurring in the manufacturing sector. This region is characterised by an academic culture and unrivalled motoring and technological expertise, and has an invaluable ability to attract passionate and talented people and firms that deserve to be supported and promoted in every way. MUNER, the Motorvehicle University of Emilia-Romagna, which brings together the main universities of Emilia-Romagna and the Motor Valley brands, is the ultimate demonstration of what we can do.

R - Right from childhood, LEGO was always THE game. I would spend hours with the bricks, inventing spaceships, castles, anything that came to mind. Time would stop until I was able to perfectly recreate whatever it was that I saw in my imagination.

What did it mean for you to build the Panigale V4 R? R - It was definitely a great honour, one of my most significant professional achievements so far.

What was the biggest challenge from an engineering standpoint?

R - Creating and connecting various curves, built along different axes. In constructing the fairings, we started with the lower section, affixing them to the engine to support the entire weight of the structure. As we moved towards the upper section, we created internal support modules to anchor the various curves, using pieces that would allow rotation thanks to specially designed nodes. We tested many fastening solutions, and many bike parts were rebuilt at least two or three times. But the greatest challenge of all was undoubtedly trying to match the elegance and beauty of the real Panigale V4 R. What was it like to collaborate with the Ducati engineers?

R - The collaboration and support between us was first-rate. We were in constant contact to achieve the best possible results. Together, and with the use of renderings, we decided how to prepare the frame and bike so that it could accommodate all the LEGO® parts, including the internal elements not visible from the outside, and perfectly support the engine, just like the real Panigale V4 R. Is there another Ducati you’d like to recreate?

R - All of them! And I’ll tell you the one I’d like to start with, the XDiavel, my favourite Ducati!

The 1:1 scale model of the Panigale V4 R weighs 180 kg. It is composed of 15,000 bricks and the most used elements are BEAMS and PINS.

Aurelien, what distinguishes the creative process when designing a LEGO Technic™?

A - Just one word: simplicity. This is the only way to obtain the best representation of the model we are creating or replicating. But simplicity is extremely hard to achieve. We must use the right element for the right detail, as LEGO® DNA dictates. We do not want a model that is overly detailed, as that would be over the top and ‘heavy’ on the eye. Our goal is to ensure that anyone looking at the model can understand it, decode it, and even imagine what functions it has and what kind of game experience it offers.

How do you approach the details?

A - I start with our dedicated element platform, which includes gears, pistons, pneumatic beams, connectors, suspension, engine blocks and many more, to build the most authentic representation of the vehicle in question. A vast range of panels then helps me to perfect the appearance, as well as recreate details with decorations or stickers. All this combined helps emphasise the model’s details and make it more authentic.

The LEGO Technic™ Ducati Panigale V4 R is 32 cm long, 16 cm high and 8 cm wide. As well as coming complete with steering, suspension, and front and rear brake discs, it is the first motorcycle model in the history of LEGO Technic™ to include a gearbox to simulate the different speed and riding techniques.

What was the biggest challenge with the LEGO Technic™ Ducati Panigale V4 R? A - Without a doubt the mechanical part.

We inserted a gearbox inside a LEGO Technic™ motorbike for the first time ever. I didn’t have any previous examples to inspire me, but I approached it like an irresistible challenge. The Ducati Panigale V4 R is a fantastic bike. I wanted our creation to be as authentic as possible and thought this innovation would make the model unique, just like the motorcycle itself.
