Welcome to the 19th edition of Dublin Fringe Festival 4

This year’s festival celebrates activists, whistle blowers, outsiders, women, children and industry in a jam packed programme of the best new Irish and international arts.

From ANU’s Thirteen to Nic Green’s Fatherland to Louise White’s Way Back Home to Dead Centre’s Lippy to The Trailblazery’s Rites of Passage; this programme, more than any other in Dublin Fringe Festival’s history, actively encourages you to think and participate in a state of the nation debate through the work presented in it. HotForTheatre’s BREAK platforms a school staff room as a microcosm for a broader Irish society, while Collapsing Horse’s Distance from the Event hurls us into the future to look back on the now.

Over the past five years it has been an extraordinary privilege to work alongside artists who are politically and socially engaged; who want to make work that questions who fringefest.com | 1850 374 643

we are as a nation, where we’ve come from and where we are going. In thinking about the design for this brochure we spoke to our designer about the idea of a ‘soft revolution’. I think that has really happened in the performing arts in the past five years in Ireland. A whole new generation have cut their teeth (mostly here at Dublin Fringe Festival) and come of age, bringing you, an engaged and enthusiastic audience, with them.

This year we have aimed to strengthen and bolster some of those artists by co-producing work with them, notably Thirteen with ANU and BREAK with HotForTheatre. With BREAK, we initiate Fringe on Tour, where HotForTheatre will play run on

dates in Draíocht, Blanchardstown.

We are also delighted to have commissioned the incredible musical duo Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh and Nic Gareiss to make their first theatre show under the direction and design of Willfredd Theatre’s Sophie Motley and Sarah Jane Shiels.

In participating in The Gathering, we’ve invited Irish artists abroad to come back home with something new, most notably the brilliant Maeve Higgins, who premieres her first play Moving City, commissioned by the festival, at Smock Alley Theatre. We’ve also invited some of our favourite international artists back to the festival; Taylor Mac, Melanie Wilson and Nic Green among them.

On a bittersweet note, as this is my last programme as Director of Dublin Fringe Festival I want to thank all the brilliant people I’ve worked with over the past five years; our project partners Project Arts Centre, Irish Theatre Institute, Fishamble: The New Play Company, Theatre Forum Ireland, Dance Ireland, The Lir and Bewleys Café Theatre; our funders

The Arts Council, Dublin City Council and Fáilte Ireland; my guardian angel Una Carmody; the amazing staff and board of Dublin Fringe Festival who go above and beyond to make miracles happen each and every September; and above all the extraordinary and inspirational artists I have had the great privilege to work with. In the words of Jerry Maguire (and Dr. Evil), with tongue planted only slightly in cheek: You complete me. I wish the wonderful Kris Nelson, who takes up the role of Dublin Fringe Festival Director after the festival this year all the very best - I know he will have a blast working with all these amazing people.

There’s an abundance of riches in this programme; laughter, tears, wonder, terror and excitement with a few head-scratchers from pioneers out on the edge in the mix.

No one is spared. “How did I end up like this, so tiny, in polyester pants over time going shiny, and wearing away until hard and then frayed, flayed over rota and rules and first aid?” HotForTheatre presents a show that challenges the familiar and infiltrates the system in bells, beats and breaks. For anyone who wonders what happens when ‘how we do things’ becomes more important than the people we do things for.

Thirteen

ANU Productions in association with Dublin Fringe Festival Ireland

The closest thing Ireland has ever had to a socialist revolution, the Dublin Lockout provides us with a glimpse of an alternative Ireland. The current economic collapse and the resulting national distress pulls the issues of one hundred years ago sharply into focus. Echoes of mass meetings and marches, industrial unrest and the very rights of the citizen reverberate today as they did then.

Building incrementally day by day over thirteen days of the festival, ANU presents a series of thirteen interconnecting works combining performance, installation and digital technology allowing audiences to immerse themselves in the tumultuous events of 1913 as they unfold in present day Dublin.

A co-production with Dublin Fringe Festival, with the support of the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon, Dublin City Council, The LAB and Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) ANU blaze a trail back to the Fringe with Dublin City as their mise-en-scene. You are invited on a journey - a passage through time and space crossing a constellation of cultural thresholds from our ancient past to our potential future. Joseph Campbell celebrated the Rite of Passage as a way “for the individual to die to the past and be reborn to the future.” This great quest is a human tradition that has existed from the beginning of time.

The Rites of Passage project is an excavation of collective happenings and experiences that have shaped who we are as people and where we might be going on this little island and beyond. A brilliant cast of national and international speakers are ready to explore, reveal and re-imagine this place we call home.

A work inspired by the myth of Narcissus; where raw physicality, video art and sound come together through the interpretation of French poet and Philosopher Gaston Bachelard stating that: “Matter is the mirror of our energies which engages our imagination and summons the personhood of each of us, providing the will to action”. Water acts as a symbol of our extremely dynamic and coded society, where we constantly see and seek for our own reflection through our interaction with the environment.

Inspired by the different but overlapping disciplines of astronomy and science fiction, What’s The Matter? creates a movable atmosphere, suggesting the potential outcomes for one being in a theatrical space. With an energetic focus, movement is constantly materialising, yet is unresolved. This performance seeks to explore questions pertaining to our existence in the universe. Seasonal, colourful food to sustain and restore. Not free or expensive. Luncheonette is the food strand of Jennie Moran’s visual art practice. It comes from looking for ways of making places or situations feel more hospitable. Things like warmed concrete, peach scented polythene, makeshift incandescent light bulbs, whiskey, straw have been used in the past to treat places/ situations. Food is a really lovely material.

Most phenomenally, it ends up inside people. It also allows us to spend time differently. It makes sense of things.

Licensed pilot, dog trainer, welder and Bessie award winning artist, Vidich’s work consists of open-ended stories that are complicated by active spectators. Fishamble New Writing Award For the best play by a new or emerging Irish (or Irishbased) playwright premiered during Dublin Fringe Festival, this award includes the prize of a scholarship place on one of Fishamble's acclaimed playwriting courses, dramaturgical support and a stipend towards the playwright’s next play, generously sponsored by Fishamble: The New Play Company. The idea of new writing is interpreted broadly to include new works in the area of dance, performance art, music, multi-author, post-dramatic works and so on. Dublin Fringe Festival identifies curates and nurtures emerging artists. FRINGE LAB provides year round practical and artistic support, responding to their needs and indeed those of independent more established artists. There is huge demand for these supports which are pivotal in shaping the work of a new generation of Irish performing artists, amplifying their presence on the world stage. These artists’ work is devised, demanding collaboration.

As the arts sector diverges from individual companies each with its own administration, at a basic level, professional performing artists need somewhere to work.

We provide that space in our new HQ equipped with two large studios (Studio 1: a dedicated, free space for development of new work and Studio 2: used for our series of workshops, masterclasses, special events & also available for hire at a very competitive rate), writer’s room (the CELL), and our drop-in Artists’ Office (complete with PC, free wifi, printer & phone); all backed up by access to our own in-house expertise, and an ongoing schedule of workshops, masterclasses and resource sharing activities such as FRINGE FUSE and Elevenses.
