In March, Dublin City Schools lost more than a principal, we lost an alum, a friend, a mentor, a son, a brother, a father, a husband and, most of all, one of the truly good people in this world. Dr. Anthony Jaroy Stuckey was a difference maker whose heart was deeply-rooted in changing the lives of those he came in contact with every single day. He, Elysea, and AJ will be missed, but we promise to honor their legacy by continuing to fight for the High Achievement and Success of every single student. Welcome to Irish Magazine!

Welcome to the latest edition of Irish Magazine! Our school system, like so many of you, weathered a multitude of challenges surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, but I can honestly say that it has put us in a better position to realize our No. 1 goal of High Achievement and Success for All Students.

In this edition, we pay tribute to my friend and colleague, Dr. Jaroy Stuckey. There is not enough space in this column, or this magazine, to truly impart what Dr. Stuckey meant to myself and so many but we will do everything in our power to honor his memory and carry on his legacy.

You can also find a host of articles celebrating student achievement, innovative programs and scenes from this year’s graduation ceremonies.

When you’re finished reading this issue, I encourage you to join us in our efforts to change the world one student at a time.

The Dublin City Schools Board of Education is comprised of a seven-member board including a Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Treasurer and four regular board members. Each is elected from either one of four districts (wards) or three at-large posts.

Currently, John Bell serves as Chairman, James Lanier as Vice-Chairman and Laura Travick as Treasurer. Additional board members include: Nelson Carswell IV, Peggy Johnson, Bill Perry, and Kenny Walters.

We are proud to be a six-time award winner with the Georgia School Boards Association, earning Quality Board honors in 2013, Distinguished Board honors in 2014 and Exemplary Board honors in 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019.

Dublin City Schools is a Charter school system educating more than 2,400 Pre-K through 12th grade students at five campuses.

What are we?

Dublin City Schools is an Cognia and Charter System Foundation accredited school system, offe ering themed learning environments (STEAM/LEAP) at the elementary level, high school course credits at the middle school level, and International Baccalaureate, Dual Enrollment and trade certification at the high school level. The district has earned “Exemplary Board” status by the Georgia School Boards Association in 2015, 2016 and 2018, and boasts a greater than 90 percent graduation rate (96.75 at Dublin High School).

DHS Class of ‘21 grad completes welding program and now...SHE has a full-time job

By Pepper Baker Courtesy: 13WMAZ Dublin High School senior Danielle Ward had her eyes set on her future after hearing about the welding program offered at the Heart of Georgia College and Career Academy.

“My dad, he used to weld, so I thought maybe it was something I could look into, and if I needed help, he could help me. When I actually got into the class, I actually enjoyed it, and I had fun doing it,” Ward said.

She takes dual enrollment classes at Oconee Fall Line Technical College in the welding career pathway and works as an apprentice at Wild Bore Mechanical and Plant Services.

“I could be having a bad day and I could go to the college and start 8

welding and it’s like I kind of find it like a therapy in a way,” Ward said.

Ward is the first Dublin High student to land a welding job through the college and career pathway dual enrollment program with Oconee Fall Line.

“The idea is that we have students come into high school, take welding classes, and then they’ll go to Oconee Fall Line and they’ll take more classes and get certifications. While they’re in the Oconee program, then we will work with students after they advanced to a certain point and look for apprentices,” Cannada said.

“For welders, starting out may start $18 an hour. That would be one what we would call a field welder and I’ll be honest that could go as high as $26/$27 an hour. What we call our shop welders could start around $16

She says doing it as a woman is even better.

“Kind of exciting, kind of scary in a way, but I find it more exciting than anything,” Ward said.

Ward plans to finish her degree at Oconee Fall Line after she graduates high school and stay working as a welder locally.

She says getting experience is her main goal.

A report from Zippia.com that uses data from the Census Bureau says 7.5% of welders in the United States are women.

SDE running club tallies 422 miles in first year Before running the first 4-minute mile, Sir Roger Bannister had to get his start somewhere. It may have very well been an elementary running club like the one that just wrapped its first year at Susie Dasher. Students completed 422 miles during a 4-month stretch, with the Kindergarten class of Mrs. Dobbs racking up an amazing 39 miles to lead all grades!

Youth Council member Serrant only Georgian tapped for annual NLC Planning Committee Congratulations DHS Honor Grad, and City of Dublin Youth Council member, Robin Serrant, on being selected to the National League of Cities Congressional Cities Conference Planning Committee! The Congressional City Conference (CCC) provides local leaders with the tools and connections to help build a brighter future for our nation’s cities, towns and villages. She was one of only 15 selected from across the nation, and the only one from Georgia.

Rayner caps term on State Supt. Advisory Council So excited to have our Ms. Madelynn Rayner serving on this year’s Georgia Department of Education Superintendent’s Advisory Council! In April, Madelynn, and area students, met with Supt. Richard Woods at Heart of Georgia RESA to discuss issues of importance for students across the state.

The BASS WILLIAMS goal of the LAC program is to promote civic leadership and enhance responsibility among high school students while growing their knowledge of the community. Throughout the year, the students met through a mix of in-person and Zoom meetings to accommodate health and safety regulations enforced by the city at that time.

Delgado, Renfroe sign $10K REACH Scholarships A pair of Dublin Middle School eighth graders extended their REACH toward college thanks to a $10,000 scholarship both was awarded during a special ceremony Thursday in the DMS Media Center.

Aylin Delgado, and Jaden Renfroe, each signed their Realizing Educational Achievement Can Happen (REACH) scholarship in front of a smaller-than-usual crowd due to COVID-19, but families were still able to view the ceremony via video posted on the district’s social media accounts.

“Congratulations to our two wonderful REACH scholars,” said Tapuwa Makaya, principal at Dublin Middle School, who introduced Delgado with a brief biography and her goals for life beyond Dublin City Schools.

“She is the daughter of Yadira Castro,” Makaya said. “Her

hobbies include reading, dancing and singing. Her plans after she graduates high school are to go to college to either study to be a therapist or a Pre-K teacher.

Following the recitation of the scholarship contract, and signings by both Delgado and Castro, Makaya followed with a brief introduction of Renfroe and her long-term goals.

The REACH program is a part of the Governor’s Office’s Complete College Georgia Initiative spearheaded by the GSFC. Its mission is to increase academic persistence and achievement of Georgia’s academically promising middle and high school students and to increase college access and success.

Shining like a Pearl: Whitlock celebrated for half-century, DCS retirees honored Dublin City Schools took time out in late May to thank staff for all they have done over the past school year, as well as celebrating eight educators on their retirement.

Dr. Fred Williams, Superintendent, commended teachers for educating children in the midst of a once-in-lifetime pandemic, and continuing to challenge students to do and be their best.

Retirees recognized (and years of service with DCS) included: Debra Stone DMS 22 Years Valinda Horn DMS 31 Years Willie King DMS 18 Years Cathy Methvin SDE 19 Years Judith Lynn Howard SDE 31 Years Cynthia Kilgore HES 7 Years John Strickland Transportation 25 Years Dr. Susan Thornton also offered a surprise presentation to Ms. Pearl Whitlock, who completed 50 years of service last year but could not be honored due to the pandemic.

Finally, staff from all buildings competed in a series of games, such as musical chairs and 3-point shoot out for a variety of gift cards and prizes.

A Title I Reward School is a Title I school among the 5-percent of Title I schools in the state that is making the most progress in improving the performance of the all-students group over the most recent two years on the statewide assessments. DCS utilizes seat time waiver to partner with VAMC on Stuckey Workforce Development initiative As part of Dublin City Schools’ continued efforts to ensure that students are college and career ready and globally competitive, DCS began discussions with the Carl Vinson VAMC of Dublin to develop a workforce development initiative designed to connect students to potential career opportunities within the VAMC. This volunteer program will allow students to gain valuable workforce experience in a variety of programs at the VA. It has been named for the late principal of Dublin High School, Dr. Jaroy Stuckey, to continue to honor his legacy of working with

students and providing lifelong experiences. DCS plans to have its first participants involved beginning September 2021.

Students will have the opportunity to work at the

VA in various capacities in 2-4 hour time frames. Thanks to the district’s charter flexibility to waive seat time, the volunteer opportunities will not interfere with student attendance or class work.

DMS Seventh Graders prove “Resiliency Rules” DMS Seventh Graders did their part to combat COVID learning loss, thanks in part to a special competition inspired by their teachers. The “Resiliency Rules” program charged students to work for growth in ELA and math. The reward? $50 cash, EarPods, Mophie chargers, and personalized DMS insulated cups.

DHS One Act team earns multiple acting honors at Region, State Congratulations to our DHS One Act Team, who brought home a pair of All Star Cast selections thanks to stellar performances from Madelynn Rayner and Derick McRae!! The team finished 6th overall at the GHSA Class A competition in Cordele Feb. 13. Earlier at Region, the DHS thespians took home all of the top acting honors while earning a second place finish.

Paper Trail to Osaki DCS students fold 1,000 paper cranes in goodwill cultural exchange project with Japanese sister city

Participants in the ceremony included Osaki Sanbongi International Association Vice Chairs Mr. Takahashi and Mr. Mori, Prefectural Assemblyman Mr. Sasaki, City Councilor Mr. Aizawa, City Councilor Mr. Sato, and International Association member Mr. Motomiya.

Mr. Kato, General Affairs Manager of YKKAP Tohoku Factory was also present.

Osaki City was represented by Mr. Yasushi Ito, Mayor of Osaki City, Mr. Takahashi, Deputy Mayor, Mr. Ogino, Director of Sanbongi Branch Office, Mr. Terada, Director of Industrial Promotion Bureau, Industrial Economics Department, and Mr. Furuuchi, Director of Tourism Exchange Division.

A Perfect 10!

Irish retire HOF Coach Beale’s No. 10 to honor baseball legend The Dublin Fighting Irish Baseball team took time out in early March to retire the jersey of the greatest coach to ever lead the Green and Gold. In a pregame ceremony prior to Dublin’s region game vs.

Johnson County, and his son Chuck Jr., Dublin retired the No. 10 jersey of Coach Chuck Beale.

Coach Beale amassed a 217-72-1 record at Dublin, which included regular playoff trips, region titles, and helped handfuls of players earn opportunities to play in college and even the majors. Coach Beale was inducted into the Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame in December of 2020, compiling an overall record of 362-183-2 in 19 seasons as head baseball coach at Dublin and Tift County.

Welcome Mr. Paulk!

Dublin City Schools welcomed Mr. Jamie T. Paulk back into the Irish family during a special Meet and Greet event June 1 for his new role as principal of Dublin High School. Roughly 120 educators and community members came to shake hands with the new DHS Lead Learner, and also hear about his vision for leading the school in 2021 and beyond.

Paulk obtained his Bachelor of Arts - BA focused in Elementary Education and Teaching from Claflin University and his E d u c a t i o na l S p e c i a l i s t - E d. S focused in Educational Leadership from Georgia College and State University.

Devoe doubles up with second, third place in speech contests

DHS Quartet completes Laurens Youth Leadership program Dublin High sophomore students Marissa Robinson, India Newton, Madelynn Rayner, and senior Z’Nadia Carr graduated from the Laurens Youth Leadership Program in late May at the Market on Madison in Downtown Dublin as the LYL Class of 2021. The LYL program is one that seeks to enhance and apply the use of leadership skills of the youth in our community by influencing others positively and by being sensitive to the everyday needs of people through the world. The students thoroughly enjoyed their experience with the program’s initiatives and will use the skills they learned in their respective future endeavors by giving a world class effort everyday, everywhere, everyone, which increases their global competitiveness.

Along with being an Honor Graduate, and earning every number of honors, Class of 2021 graduate Tamiyah Devoe capped her senior year by performing DEVOE well in a pair of local civic club speech contests. Devoe earned second place in the Dublin Exchange Club speech contest held in mid-May, and in April earned a second runnerup finish in Dublin Rotary’s Preston Johnson Rotary 6920 Annual High School Speech Contest. Great job Tamiyah!

Laundry service project to benefit students in need Students in need will have access to yet another resource, thanks in large part to local donors and partners. Dublin City Schools is proud to announce that three sets of washing machines and dryers were donated through contributions by individuals and community partners, which will be installed to provide laundry amenities to students at our Dublin High School campus who may not have access to similar resources at home.

Lori Williams, who served as Homeless Liaison, was a point person on the project, while The Home Depot provided the machines at a greatly reduced rate.

DHS Band tapped to perform in National Memorial Day Parade Dublin City Schools is proud to announce that the Dublin High School Fighting Irish Marching Band has been selected to represent the state of Georgia at the National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C. on May 30, 2022!

The four-day, threenight trip and performances will put the Fighting Irish Band on the national stage for the first time in nearly a decade. Please help us in congratulating them on their selection!

DHS Esports team makes playoffs in inaugural season Our DHS GHSA Esports team made it to playoffs! They were ranked No. 27 and Round 1 was held May 6th.

We have Sam Hollingsworh Team 1 Captain, Ace Eiland Team 2 Captain, Desmond Gilbert, Amare Marshall, Hunter Meeks, Jamari Woodard, and Robert Patisaul.

Earth Day is every day at Hillcrest!

Every day is Earth Day at Hillcrest Elementary School, but for the real Earth Day LEAPsters focused on environmental awareness in their green and growing garden! The arrival of spring kept students busy with harvesting carrots, planting seeds, and brightening up the school with fresh flowers. Hillcrest, which is a Leadership, Environmental Awareness, and Public service school, lives by Sean Covey’s “Seven Habits of Happy Kids.”

Getting BETA Elementary students latest additions to DCS Beta program

Exceptional elementary students became the latest to join in the award-winning Beta program at Dublin City Schools. A special induction ceremony was held in June to welcome several dozen elementary Betas into the fold.
