2012 SEASON PREVIEW Pitching Staff Senior Cory Hammond (London, Ontario) has become a leader of the Panther pitching staff. The right hander came to DU after a successful two years at Sauk Valley, but has endured some challenges since coming to DU. Shoulder surgery put a stop to his first season, but he has worked very hard to get back to the form that got him to DU three years ago. Drew Kennedy (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) will once again be a key contributor as a starter for the Panthers. He is a competitor that can throw multiple pitches for strikes in any count. The verdict is still out with Jarrett Luyk (Hudsonville, Mich.). Jarrett has been the closer for the DU staff the last two seasons, but he could move into a starter role this season. Regardless of his role, Jarrett will be a “go to” guy for the Panther pitching staff this spring. Newcomers Jordan Anderson (Grand Haven, Mich.), Zach Liebman (Ionia, Mich.), and Drew Sain (Momence, Ill. - RHP) will all battle for starting spots this spring. Freshman Austin Goodyke from Grandville Calvin Christian had a very solid fall and will see innings right away.

Brian Spykerman

Catchers Austin Licon (Rockford, Ill.) is a welcomed return to the Panther line up this spring. Austin took a year off after being 1st Team All-WHAC his junior season. Licon came to DU after being named an All-American at Elgin CC. He is joined behind the dish by 2011 1st Team All-WHAC selection Michael Allen (Midland, Mich.). Mike was forced to catch nearly every game in the 2011 season, and will once again be a major factor in the Panther line-up this spring. Infield Most of the Panther infield returns this spring led by seniors Derrick Gentile (Sturgis, Mich.), Drew Kennedy, Jordan Bigger (Rockford, Ill.), and Brian Spykerman (Anaheim, Calif.). Derrick will once again anchor the infield at the corner, but could see some time at shortstop this spring. Along with seeing a lot of time on the mound, Kennedy will be the team’s starting shortstop. Drew is a very versatile athlete, and will also see time at first base where he earned All-WHAC acco-

lades last season. Jordan Bigger returns for his senior season, and will play second and third base this spring. Brian Spykerman, AJ Wentzel (Sturgis, Mich.), and Jason Pierce (Big Rapids, Mich.) will all battle for time at first base. A number of underclassmen will challenge for playing time as well. Cam Cooper (Sparta, Mich.), who is one of the team’s top outfielders, will be forced to play some infield this spring. Cam’s tremendous athleticism will help make this a smooth transition while Eric Cummings (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) and Chad Cline (Shepherd, Mich.) will also challenge for playing time.

Austin Licon

Outfield A very strong outfield could be the key to the Panthers success this spring. Brandon Bongard (Grand Rapids, Mich.) returns for his senior season in centerfield. Brandon looks to return to the form he showed in a very successful two years at Muskegon CC. Newcomers Tyler Berger (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Jotham Woo (Sparta, Mich.) are leading the way to anchor the corner positions. Berger comes to Davenport after having two successful seasons at Calvin College, while Woo was one of the top players on the Grand Rapids CC squad last spring. Cooper, Cross, Spykerman, and Pierce will all see time in the outfield as DU looks for a combination that works both defensively and offensively. The schedule sees the Panthers head south for their first few trips as they will be in Kentucky to open the season in the middle of February on back to back weekends. The annual Florida trip features games at the Russ Matt Challenge as well as away game at Warner, Webber International and Southeastern. Upon return, the Panthers begin WHAC play on March 17 as they will host last year’s conference tournament champion Indiana Tech in a two-day, 4-game series as all league games will be in 2012. Non-conference opponents after spring break include IU-Southeast, Grace College, Marian University, Rochester College, Olivet College, Alma College and Calvin College.
