PHIL SWEENEY Phil Sweeney begins his inaugural year as the Head Coach for the D1 Hockey program after serving as the assistant coach for the past seven seasons. Previous to Davenport, Phil played for the University of Kentucky for two years and was the Head Coach for two years after playing. While coaching at Davenport, Phil also served as the Head Coach at the Bantam AA level, in the GRAHA organization, for two years. He also served as an assistant coach on Team Michigan U-14 team in 2008. Over the last seven years, Phil has helped build Davenport into the premier ACHA hockey program that has been highlighted by four consecutive national championships (three at the D2 level and one at the D1 level). Phil’s roles on the team were to help oversee the offense, work with the special teams, and he also worked as a tireless recruiter as an assistant coach. Phil also serves as one of the Head Instructors for the Drills, Skills, and Thrills summer hockey camp through GRAHA. He has participated in many hockey camps, as an instructor and as a speaker over the years and has achieved his level 4 coaching level through USA Hockey. He is looking to gain his Level 5 at the next symposium in Washington DC. Phil’s game analysis, competitive drive and recruiting abilities will be key to helping keep Davenport as one of the best programs in the country. Phil also serves as the Head Men’s Golf Coach at Davenport University. Phil is currently working on his degree here at Davenport and lives in Kentwood. Bill McSween Bill begins his first year on the bench for the ACHA Division I program at Davenport. McSween helped guide the Panthers to their first ever national championship in 2007-08 and followed it up with a second the following year while playing a critical part of the DU defense. Over his five years in a Davenport uniform, Bill accumulated 23 goals and 120 assists in 180 games played. McSween ranks ninth on the all-time list in PIM’s with 260 and his 120 assists is good for 11th all-time. Bill will oversee the defense for the Panthers under first year head coach Phil Sweeney and is a graduate of Davenport University. JOE MESSINA Coach Messina is in his 7th season as the Goaltending Coach for Davenport University Men’s Ice Hockey Team. Messina has attended and worked as a Head Instructor at Bandits Goalie School since the summer of 1998. Over the years, Messina has played an important role in the formation and development of Bandits into one of the premier goalie schools in the country. Some of Messina’s duties within Bandits include marketing, design and personnel. Messina also covers all of the Western Michigan market for Bandits Goalie School team and private goalie instruction. Over the years, Messina’s growing list of students includes some of the most elite amateur, AAA, Jr. and college goalies in the local area.

2011-12 D1 HOCKEY | 7

2011-12 SEASON PREVIEW The Davenport Panthers start the 2011-12 season with some familiar faces but the success of the team might depend on the 11 additions to the squad. One major change in the look of the team is from the top as Phil Sweeney will go from being the assistant coach to the Head Coach for this upcoming season. Joining Sweeney on the bench will be Joe Messina who returns for his ninth season as the Goaltending coach, and former Panther defensemen Billy McSween, who will be taking over the duties of running a solid defensive core.

Phil Tesoriero vision III team. Brock Carlston (Muskegon, Mich.) will be able to add championship experience as well, as he helped lead his team, Fairbanks Ice Dogs, to a national championship of their own in the NAHL.

Phil Wendecker Goaltending Messina will have all three goalies back this season which features the sophomore duo of Joe D’Elia (Toronto, Ontario) and Phil Graveline (Marshall, Mich.) who combined to lead the Panthers last season to their first Division I National Championship. Joe finished 16-7 as a freshman last season with a 2.46 GAA while Phil was 20-3 with a 2.48 GAA between the pipes. Matt Sekosan (Sterling Heights, Mich.) will also be back after joining the Panthers midway through the season last year from the Division III squad. Defense Bill McSween will make his return to the Panthers, but now will be on the other side of the bench. McSween will take over a solid defensive core led by newly named assistant captain Phil Tesoriero (Boulder, Colo.). Bo Jacobs (Twin Lakes, Mich.), Jon Franks (Wallingford, Conn.) and Adam Gillikin (Canton, Mich.) all return for DU and those four defenseman have won a lot at DU, and will look to add to their ring collection by playing an in your face style of defense. Also on the defensive side will be Taylor Keyworth (Grand Rapids, Mich.) who is coming to the Division I team after an impressive career on the Di8 | DAVENPORT UNIVERSITY PANTHERS

Forwards Up front, the Panthers have a new man in the captains chair as Ben Dykstra (Kentwood, Mich.) will take over for Brit Ouellette, as the Captain of the 2011-12 season. Helping Dykstra up front will be assistant captains, Jeff Slusser (Kentwood, Mich.) and Phil Wendecker (Westland, Mich.). Both players enjoyed a lot of success on defense for DU, but look to lead a very impressive offense. Davenport will also return key forward Adam Kuhn (Southgate, Mich.) who had a great freshman campaign while being named the GLCHL Rookie of the Year. Norm Farr will join Keyworth in the transition from Division III to Division I and his speed will be crucial in shutting down other team’s top lines and power-plays. The Panthers have to replace a lot of offensive punch from last season and have added eight new forwards to their lineup. Kevin Noble, Zack Blumke, Micheal Bishop, Dustin Wischmeyer, Blake Damerow, Josh Munford, Chris Ballatore, and Mason Bohlinger all look to keep Davenport one of the most explosive teams in the country. Davenport has a very impressive schedule this season as they will face ACHA D1 powers Lindenwood, Ohio, Arizona State, Liberty, Oklahoma, Illinois, and Arizona in non-conference games. They also face their GLCHL foes: Adrian, Eastern Michigan, UM Dearborn, and Western Michigan four times each. DU and Oakland will continue to play a best of 5 “Good Luck Duck” series, with the first four counting towards GLCHL standings.

2010-2011 Season in review On the Road Again – The Panthers played 13 of their first 16 games on the road against tough competition. During their 13 games, DU played in five different states: Missouri, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa and Michigan. Incredibly, the Panthers compiled a 10-3 during their road games, including wins over No. 1 Lindenwood, No. 2 Ohio, No. 3 Oklahoma and No. 5 Iowa State. Collar Sets DU Records vs. WMU – Bobby Collar broke Marc Lira’s all-time assist record in a 4-1 win over Western Michigan. The assist gave Collar 196 for his stellar career. Collar finished the season with 206 assists. Later in the season, Collar set the all-time scoring mark with 342 points, breaking Adam Thomas’ record. The Panthers defeated WMU 11-2 in the contest. Collar extended the record to 357 points by the end of the season. Wins over Ranked Teams – The 2010-11 DU hockey team may have scheduled the toughest teams in the country all season long and they proved they belong at the highest level. DU defeated at the time when they were ranked: #1 Lindenwood, #2 Ohio, #3 Oklahoma, #4 Oklahoma, #5 Iowa State, #7 Adrian, #9 Oklahoma, #10 Liberty, #12 Oakland, #17 Central Oklahoma and #22 Western Michigan. Paul Lowden Claims 300th Win – A 6-3 victory over No. 9 Oklahoma gave Head Coach Paul Lowden his 300th career win. Lowden, who started the program in 2002-03, finished the year with a 308-81-13 career record. In his nine seasons, the Panthers have won four ACHA National Championships. Can’t Spell DUCK Without DU – With a convincing 4-0 win over Oakland, Davenport once again claimed the Good Luck Duck. The Panthers won three games against the Grizzles after dropping the season opener. ACHA Division 1 National Champions! – In their first year in the Division 1 level, the Panthers defeated No. 1 and two-time defending D1 champion Lindenwood 3-2 in overtime. During their National Tournament run, the Panthers defeated Rutgers 12-1 in the first round, Rhode Island 9-1 in the quarterfinals, Ohio 4-2 in the Semifinals, and Lindenwood for the Championship. National Tournament Team – Bobby Collar capped off his brilliant five year DU career by earning national tournament MVP honors. He was joined on the first team by Brit Ouellette, Kevin Brojek and Jonathon Juliano. On the second team was Sean McKenzie who led the tourney in scoring along with Juliano.

Post-Season Honors – Davenport, who finished second in the regular season in the newly formed GLCHL, earned numerous post-season honors including MVP Brit Ouellette, rookie of the year Adam Kuhn and sportsmanship award Jonathon Juliano. Joining Ouellette and Juliano on first team was defenseman Jeff Slusser. 2010-2011 RESULTS Date
