H STREET FESTIVAL

washington, d.c.

The H Street Festival is one of the most well-attended and celebrated one-day festivals in Washington, D.C. Over 150,000 people came to the 16th annual event to recognize and admire the arts culture that exists in the area, which has become an agent to stimulate economic growth. The 9th and H Street DTLR store is located right in the middle of the 11 block-long festival, and our team activated an impactful area featuring a NASCAR simulation, face painting, giveaways and a 360 video booth. Many attendees were in awe of the NASCAR simulation and were excited to meet race car driver Rajah Caruth. The face painter was a “hit,” as countless kids lined up waiting their turn. Attendees also loved posing at the 360 video booth as their movements were captured in slow motion. Each year, DTLR brings a new and elevated experience to the festival and this year was no exception.

FREE SHOES TO THE MIAMI YOUTH

miami, fl

This past weekend, Quality Control Music’s artist Wavy Navy Pooh and Shod the God partnered with DTLR Community Outreach to provide free shoes for all school-aged children that came into the South Florida location. During this two-hour event, over $10,000 worth of shoes were purchased. Their goal, in which they surpassed, was to provide a free pair of shoes to all children who walked through the doors within that time slot. Wavy Navy Pooh, one of the newest artists signed to the Quality Control Music label, is a lyrical genius who wears his heart on his sleeve with vivid and hard-hitting tracks that chronicle the harsh realities of his upbringing in one of Miami’s most dangerous districts. The 25-year-old rapper credits Instagram for saving his life, when Quality Control’s CEO direct-messaged him asking for samples of his music, which led to his recent and prompt signing to the label. As part of the new generation of QC’s roster, a label known for scouting and breaking bright new talent, he hit the ground running with his debut album Murder Is a Major Issue, or M.I.A.M.I. The album offers an introduction to the lesser-known side of Miami from the perspective of someone who found hip-hop to not only be a way out, but a tool for shining a much-needed light on the violence that has plagued the lives of those who couldn’t escape. Speaking on M.I.A.M.I., Wavy Navy shares: “Hip-hop inspired me because I always saw a way out for people like myself coming from nothing…I want to be a legend when it’s all said and done. I want the world to know the other side of Miami.”

SLEEP IN HEAVENLY PEACE

chicago, il

DTLR Community Outreach teamed up with the nonprofit organization, Sleep in Heavenly Peace, which fully believes that a bed is a basic need for the proper physical, emotional, and mental support of a child. When it was brought to their attention that a lot of children end up sleeping on couches, blankets and even floors, which can affect their health and happiness, they stepped up and took initiative. DTLR sent a group of volunteers who worked alongside the nurses at University of Chicago to help build, assemble, and deliver top-notch bunk beds to children and families in need. This was the start of a partnership with the organization, and we are excited to sponsor our own build day in the coming months.
