A WARM welcome to 2014 – Scotland’s year of opportunity.

Those who attended VisitScotland chief executive Malcolm Roughead’s fascinating talk to the chamber on 22 January will know that there will be unparalleled international focus on our country over the next 12 months.

As well as the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in July, 2014 is the year of Homecoming which will see a number of initiatives aimed at bringing the Scottish diaspora back - along with their euros, dollars and yen!

For golfers like me, it is, of course, the arrival of the Ryder Cup, the world’s third biggest sporting event, at Gleneagles in September, which promises to be the highlight.

Dunbartonshire is the gateway to Loch Lomond and the Trossachs and this is a great opportunity to increase our tourism profile and boost business.

Finally, we hope to make 2014 a year of opportunity for our engineering and manufacturing companies by launching a specialist forum where they can visit premises, share ideas and network.

As our recent speakers, the Pirrie brothers, and Aggreko have shown, Dunbartonshire leads the world in the field of portable power generation.

I was surprised to discover that manufacturing is the biggest employer by sector in East Dunbartonshire.

Less surprisingly, there are a large number of specialist engineering companies in West Dunbartonshire – the legacy of centuries of shipbuilding. By giving these companies an opportunity to meet up, we hope to build links and promote commerce across industry.

Francis Bacon said: “A wise man will make more opportunities than he finds.” If this is our year, then let’s make something of it.

Some may say an even greater opportunity for the country will arise on 18 September when the independence referendum takes place. Director Iain Ross and I attended a Scottish Cabinet briefing to civic Scotland on the independence white paper.

As an individual, I was impressed by the broad vision presented; as a businessman, less so by the lack of detail, particularly around costings. I am not the only one – research commissioned by Scottish Chambers of Commerce showed that 60 per cent of businesses felt they did not have sufficient information to make a decision.

We will try to change this in the next few months by inviting representatives from both ‘Yes Scotland’ and ‘Better Together’ to address us. Make sure you take the opportunity to raise any important business issues that concern you.

THE economic situation seems to be improving both nationally and for chamber members.

This is bound to be helped by the prestigious, high profile events taking place in Scotland this year like the Commonwealth Games, the Ryder Cup and the Year of Homecoming, which will bring many visitors and, with them, business opportunities.

Many congratulations to chamber member Joyce Young who received her OBE from Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace in early February dressed of course in one of her own fabulous designer outfits. (Pages 12-13) She says her feet have hardly touched the ground since she picked up two top wedding industry awards at the end of 2013.

As if that wasn’t enough, one of her bespoke special occasion outfits featured in the BBC drama Last Tango in Halifax – and she became a grandmother.

This year, her Bearsden-based business, By Storm, celebrates its 20th anniversary. Its London shop is moving to bigger premises in April and her Tartan Spirit collection may expand into the Chinese market.

She’s not alone in her successes – Clydebank’s Campbell and Kennedy expects continued business growth in 2014, and in 2013 won important new contracts and opened an office in Northern Ireland. (Page 25) As InCommerce went to press, I heard that European Circuits won the New to Exporting Award at the Subsea Expo in Aberdeen. In this issue you can read about their recently appointed South of England business development manager, Ian Timms. (Page 7) West Dunbartonshire and Clydebank, in particular, are hotspots for engineering and manufacturing – unsurprising given the area’s shipbuilding heritage.

Business Gateway and the Scottish Manufacturing Advisory Service envisage West Dunbartonshire as a centre of excellence hub and have organised an event which will take place in late March or early April at European Circuits’ premises.

The chamber hopes to develop an engineering/manufacturing forum for Dunbartonshire from this so watch this space for details!

Chamber Attends Independence Briefing DUNBARTONSHIRE Chamber of Commerce was represented at a Scottish Government briefing to find out more about the White Paper on Independence.

The First Minister, Alex Salmond, and other members of the Scottish Cabinet, including his deputy, Nicola Sturgeon, answered questions from the floor on ‘Scotland’s Future – Your Guide to an Independent Scotland.’

Chamber president Stewart Rennie and director Iain Ross attended the Edinburgh event which was chaired by Sunday Herald journalist Iain Macwhirter.

After the formal proceedings, ministers circulated in the foyer talking to people. Iain took the opportunity to advise Ms Sturgeon of his concerns regarding the lack of proper discussion on currency issues and European union membership.

He said: “This was a great opportunity to get close to the decision makers and have your say.

“There were a number of questions and guarantees requested – many of these concerned short-term policy rather than the real pros and cons of independence.

“However, I’m glad I invested the time in attending and would do so again if a similar event was organised.”

European Circuits Expands Sales Team EUROPEAN Circuits Limited (ECL) has appointed a business development manager for Southern England.

Ian Timms (pictured) has joined the Clydebank firm’s sales and marketing team which is now four strong.

Ian is based in Camberley, Surrey, which is ideally situated to service existing customers in the South of England and to develop new business in the area.

His career over the past 35 years has progressed through mechanical design, PCB design, technology management and sales. He has previously worked with Philips, Nokia and Ibiden where he dealt with some major corporate customers.

“Since joining European Circuits, I have been impressed with its management of such a diverse product range in both PCB manufacture and PCB assembly,” he said.

“The relationship between European Circuits and its customers is excellent and I will strive to continue to support its business philosophy.”

Sales director, Jim Broom, added: “Bringing Ian onto the team allows me to focus more attention on other areas of the business such as our growing export markets.”

“We are committed to developing the business in the UK and also have plans in place to continue the growth we’ve seen from companies outside the UK, including Sweden, Italy, Germany, France and also Middle East markets.”

Green Light for Lomondgate Petrol Station AN Esso petrol station at Lomondgate has been granted planning permission by West Dunbartonshire Council.

The Euro Garages Ltd development will include a Spar convenience store, Greggs and Subway food outlets, and a Starbucks ‘On The Go’ coffee vending facility.

Euro Garages has completed acquisition of the site, with construction work expected to commence soon.

Lomondgate partners, Walker Group and Strathleven Regeneration, hope that the petrol station will be open by the end of 2014.

It is a key component of the £140 million Lomondgate development and will join the Premier Inn, Brewers Fayre and drive-thru Costa already on site.

With this line-up of essential roadside facilities in place, the Lomondgate partners will market the remaining sites for visitororientated development with the aim of creating ‘destination services’ at the National Park gateway. www.lomondgate.com

New Boss at Mugdock Country Park

Newsnight Scotland Editor Joins College Management Team FORMER BBC television editor Diarmid O’Hara (pictured) has been appointed director of communications, policy and planning at West College Scotland (WCS).

Diarmid (51) has more than 20 years’ experience with BBC Scotland, where he held a variety of senior positions, including editor of Newsnight Scotland.

“WCS is a thriving and exciting environment with a student population of around 40,000,” said Diarmid.

Mary will be responsible for development of the park starting with the refurbishment of the courtyard buildings and setting up of a manned visitor centre.

The intention is to raise the park from a four to a five-star visitor attraction.

Mary was previously team leader for economic development in East Dunbartonshire providing advice and financial support to business through Business Gateway and the council’s discretionary grant programmes.

She also has experience of securing funding and project managing infrastructure projects, as well as of working to increase employment opportunities and create jobs locally.

“I am delighted to be appointed team leader at Mugdock Park.

“It is a key tourism location with tremendous potential.

“As an innovative leader in the FE sector, I am thrilled to be part of the team and look forward to the challenges ahead.”

“One of my first tasks is to co-ordinate the development of a visitor centre which will provide an additional level of service and supply enhanced retail opportunities for visitors to the park.

College principal Audrey Cumberford, added: “We are very pleased to have someone of Diarmid’s calibre join our senior management team.

“A number of enterprises operate from the park and I look forward to working with them to develop further business opportunities.”

Generous Whisky Workers Donate Christmas Hampers EMPLOYEES at Chivas Brothers’ Kilmalid site in Dumbarton donated 28 food hampers to families in need at Christmas.

Hundreds of items were contributed including tins and packets of food for distribution to the families through local churches and social work services.

THE Tell Organisation received a special certificate for its support of reservists at a ceremony in Glasgow.

“We put out a notice asking employees to donate, and the response was overwhelming! Everyone really wanted to help. The real joy of the festive season is giving, so I’m delighted we were able to do something for those less fortunate, so they could have a better Christmas.”

The Dumbarton-based training and development business was given the award by SaBRE (Support for British Reservists and Employers) in national recognition of its commitment as a supportive employer.

Chivas employee, Kirstine McColl, came up with the idea after seeing an appeal on television.

She said: “Myself and colleagues, Linda Moir and Lynn Campbell, were so touched by the plight of families and elderly people close to home, who for various reasons are struggling with the cost of everyday life, and for whom Christmas is a difficult time.

Chamber Raffle Benefits Macmillan Cancer Support DUNBARTONSHIRE chamber members raised £403 for Macmillan Cancer Support with a festive raffle.

All prizes were donated by members with tickets sold at the annual Christmas lunch in Cameron House.

Macmillan regional fundraiser, Ryan Taylor, is pictured accepting a cheque from chamber president, Stewart Rennie.

He thanked members for their generosity and explained that 91 per cent of cancer patients experience a drop in income as a result of their condition.

Nomad Merger Increases Team and Skills NOMAD Associates has merged with Liverpool-based creative studio, Nonconform.

The marketing services firm, headed up by chamber director, Damon Scott, and Stephen Allen, will now operate under the name of Nonconform, with offices in Clydebank’s Titan Enterprise Centre and in the centre of Liverpool.

Damon commented: “Nonconform has a fantastic background in brand development and creative design which will help us meet a growing demand from clients in these areas.

SCC Welcomes Fall In Unemployment

BUSINESS confidence has grown in Scotland as unemployment figures have fallen.

“As we enter 2014, SCC are picking up more evidence of improving confidence levels and we will be looking for sustained economic growth for the remainder of this year.”

Commenting on the release of official data which shows that Scottish unemployment fell by 25,000 in the three months to November 2013, Liz Cameron, chief executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce (SCC), said:

However the export market has not fared so well with figures revealing a 2.2 per cent fall in Scottish manufactured exports for the third quarter of last year.

“Scottish businesses are gaining in confidence and creating new job opportunities and that is why our unemployment rate has fallen to 6.4 per cent - well below the UK average.

“These figures tally with the findings of the SCC Quarterly Business Survey which has shown falling export trends throughout 2013,” Liz added.

“There is an increasing weight of evidence that the Scottish economy is at last entering a period of sustained growth and that GDP levels might soon return to their prerecessionary mark.

“However we have also measured an increase in domestic orders from across Scotland and the rest of the UK during the same period and this rise in domestic demand has more than compensated for the overall fall in exports.

“Rising levels of employment and falling unemployment are further indicators that businesses are sufficiently confident of future prospects that they feel secure in investing in new staff.

“That said, there are some important concerns over sectors which rely heavily on exports such as food and drink. We recognise that the global economy remains patchy and therefore breadth of exporting and targeting key growth markets will be extremely important in sustaining exports this year and next.” www.scottishchambers.org.uk

Bearsden’s Joyce Young Storms Wedding Industry Awards Again FASHION designer Joyce Young rounded off a fantastic year by winning two top accolades at the wedding industry’s annual VOWS awards for 2013.

Her business, By Storm of Bearsden, won the coveted Industry Award as well as the Mums’ Outfitter prize at a glittering Vegas-themed ceremony at The Corn Exchange in Edinburgh.

By Storm has been nominated by its customers every year since 2005 in the VOWS. It has won the pinnacle prize three times and other category awards four times.

The name is short for Voted Outstanding Wedding Supplier and nominations come from recently married couples and members of the bridal party.

By Storm in Milngavie Road celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Its London shop, which opened in 1999, is moving to bigger premises in upmarket Belsize Park where celebrities like Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow and husband Chris Martin, model Kate Moss, and Helena Bonham Carter live.

Joyce also visited Buckingham Palace in February to receive her OBE granted in the 2013 New Year Honours list for services to textiles.

She said: “2013 was a fantastic year for us starting off with the amazing news that I had been awarded an OBE, followed by becoming a grandmother to a beautiful baby girl in March.

BBC Drama Features Designer’s Outfit ONE of Joyce Young’s bespoke special occasion outfits featured in the BBC drama Last Tango in Halifax which starred Derek Jacobi and Anne Reid.

On Christmas Eve the two widowed pensioners played by Jacobi and Reid marry after rekindling a relationship that began decades previously.

“Then there was a trip to China as guests of a businessman who is interested in selling our Tartan Spirit collection there, lots of amazing weddings, some of which we attended, and we finished the year off by winning the Industry Award at the VOWS.

“It was quite a whirlwind and our feet haven’t touched the ground.”

A Fond Farewell to Kai Karlsen BEER was 13 pence a pint when Kai Karlsen started working for what was then Dunbarton County Council as a junior assistant.

“It has been a privilege to work with Kai and we will miss his knowledge, expertise and enthusiasm,” he added.

Ted Heath was Prime Minister, Jackie Stewart was racing’s Formula One World Champion for the third time, and Bond film, Live and Let Die was screening in cinemas.

Kai said that he had very much enjoyed working with the local business community and felt that things were definitely looking up for the West Dunbartonshire economy in the coming months.

Since 1973, Kai has been through two local government reorganisations, worked as a technician draughtsman, in industrial development and business support, then latterly as economic development officer with West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC).

Chamber honorary president, John Corcoran, said: “I have had the pleasure of working with Kai both with the chamber and, many years before, in my dealings with the local authority.

Colleagues and friends gathered at the council chambers in January to bid him a fond farewell after more than 40 years in local government.

“In the lead up to the formation of what eventually became Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce, Kai was a guiding light for our future relationship with the council, and worked with our directors to help create the service level agreement which we still operate to the benefit of all parties today.

WDC economic development manager, Michael McGuiness, paid tribute to Kai and thanked him for his years of service: “He knows everyone, can talk to everyone and anyone, and has always been professional.

“His charisma with businesses and all those he came into contact with was legendary and, as a special advisor on the chamber board, his knowledge and advice was invaluable.

He will be missed without a shadow of doubt.”

Council Offers to Buy Clydebank Re-built for £800K WEST Dunbartonshire Council (WDC) has offered £800,000 to buy Clydebank Property Company – the subsidiary of Clydebank Re-built.

The deal would transfer the urban regeneration company’s assets, including the Titan Crane, and responsibility for regeneration in the town, to the local authority.

Councillor David McBride, WDC’s convener of economic development, said: “The Council remains committed to continuing the regeneration of Clydebank and the wider West Dunbartonshire.

The proposed purchase price takes account of the risks that the council will inherit, including the fact that the crane currently runs at an operating loss.

“The priority at this time is to work closely with the board of Clydebank Re-built in planning for that future.

Clydebank Rebuilt, a registered charity, was set up by the council and Scottish Enterprise with a commitment to fund it for 10 years until March 2013.

“With the approval of the committee we can now move on with our purchase offer to Clydebank Rebuilt and hopefully we can reach a satisfactory conclusion for both parties.”

Its regeneration projects included opening up Queens Quay on the former John Brown’s shipyard site as a new business and learning hub with Clydebank College, developing Clyde Gate business park next to the Golden Jubilee Hospital, restoring the Titan Crane as an award-winning shipbuilding heritage visitor and education centre, as well as overseeing major environmental improvements around the Forth/Clyde Canal at the town’s shopping centre.

Graham Mochan, chair of the Clydebank Re-built board added: “We all recognise that it is important that the assets developed over the last 10 years continue to be held in public ownership for the continuing benefit of the town.

Tell Partnership Creates Jobs in Care Sector A SHORTAGE of young people working in the adult care sector created training and job opportunities in West Dunbartonshire The Tell Organisation, in partnership with West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC), the Department for Work and Pensions and Skills Development Scotland, identified a need to encourage consideration of care as a long term career opportunity and formed a care academy forum to progress this.

The council agreed to allocate 40 of its promised 200 Modern Apprenticeships (MA) to the sector both within its own workforce and with subcontracted care provision partners.

As a result, Tell was a finalist in the Success in Partnership category at the Scottish Training Federation Awards (STF) 2013.

The bid focused on recruiting the correct people, providing them with appropriate training to SVQ/MA level 2 and giving them employment opportunities.

Positive destinations in the care sector were secured for 71 per cent of participants and 95 per cent have or will receive their Level 2 MA in health and social care.

“It has been an absolute pleasure to work with WDC, other partner organisations and the apprentices themselves,” said Tell director, Christine Doherty.

Michael Gill, employability manager with WDC, added: “Collaboration and partnership working has allowed many of our young people to gain valuable work experience that turned into employment with certificated training that will provide an excellent platform to build a career.

HMRC Makes Tax Easier for Small Businesses HMRC is working with chambers of commerce to make tax easier for small and medium sized enterprises.

It has a range of online learning resources, regular free ‘live’ webinars, which give people a chance to question experts, as well as pre-recorded ones, plus YouTube videos, and downloadable factsheets.

Its products cover topics ranging from business expenses for the self-employed, record keeping, statutory sick pay, how to complete a tax return online, an introduction to VAT, to international trade and the responsibilities of company directors.

There are e-learning packages for specific trades including the construction industry and farmers, as well as the hair and beauty industry.

In the 2013 Autumn Statement, HMRC published details of how it is improving the tax system in its ‘Supporting Small Business’ document.

Chancellor’s Autumn Statement Update

THE Chancellor reminded us again that the government will continue to make difficult decisions to aid a ‘responsible recovery’ of the UK economy.

Our overall view is that there are no major structural changes to the tax and allowances regime for ownermanaged business.

However, the Chancellor did reiterate his support for business by stating that business tax is still too high and that he will encourage exports by doubling financial support to £50bn.

Employers There is good news for companies employing under 21s – from April 2015 there will be no employers’ national insurance. If you employ someone on £12k a year, this will save you £500, with a £1000 saving on those earning £16k.

Tax Avoidance The Chancellor will continue his attack on tax avoidance, evasion and fraud. He made particular mention of the growth of intermediaries.

It is unclear what further legislation is needed given the introduction of the catch all general anti-abuse rule in July this year. Perhaps this is a political statement. There is concern that genuine commercial arrangements undertaken by business owners may be affected.

Construction Industry The construction industry will appreciate the Chancellor’s commitment to support residential building by introducing £1bn in loans to unlock housing developments in Manchester, Leeds, and around the country.

Two more lenders, Aldermore and Virgin, will also join the Help to Buy Scheme, again indicating that it is here to stay.

However, employers may feel this is poor compensation for the extra burden being placed on them by the recent announcement of a mix-and-match approach to maternity and paternity leave entitlement.

Business Rates The Chancellor announced an overall cap of two per cent from 2014 on business rates, with the option to pay in 12 monthly instalments, plus a commitment to clear all existing appeals by 2015.

Retailers will benefit from the introduction of a £1,000 discount on all properties with a rateable value of £50,000 for a two year period. In addition, a re-occupation relief will be introduced, which will halve rates for new occupiers.

Fuel Duties Another welcome announcement is the cancellation of the proposed two pence per litre fuel duty.

Continued Growth Forecast for Clydebank Contractor CHAMBER member Campbell & Kennedy (C&K) is set for continued growth in 2014 as it celebrates 60 years in business.

Campbell & Kennedy is working with the developers and architect to ensure that the system design provides maximum return on investment.

SELF-directed Support (SDS) represents one of the most significant changes to the way care services will be delivered in Scotland in decades.

From 1 April it will roll out more options for people to choose how their social care is delivered giving them greater control over their own lives.

Whether people needing care and support are able to grasp this opportunity depends on them being able to choose from a range of providers and the market is still in its infancy.

In recognition of this, the People as Partners project was set up by Scottish Care to provide information, build capacity and offer guidance to independent providers. The project is funded by the Scottish Government.

Ensuring Real Choice in Social Care

WILL Self-directed Support (SDS) give people real choices which help them live fulfilling lives?

Will there be encouragement for providers to be creative and innovative or will they be forced to drive prices down and let quality suffer?

These are questions which can only be answered once the new system has bedded in but there are reasons to be positive.

The legislation comes into effect on 1 April 2014 and is the result of a long campaign by the users of social care services for greater choice and control over what happens in their lives.

At the heart of the new law is a set of values and principles which seek to make a real difference to the quality of life people have.

The values of respect, fairness, independence, freedom and safety are now enshrined in law. These are grounded in legal principles of participation and dignity, involvement, informed choice and collaboration.

Readers might assume that these values and principles are already at the core of social care provision. Unfortunately all too often people who need support report having limited choice, of a one-size fits all approach and a take-it-or-leave-it mentality.

SDS is about ensuring that people have real choice; that they have rights to say one service is preferred over another; it is about making sure people can participate and contribute to their local communities; that they are treated in ways which respect and enhance their personal dignity and worth.

In short, it is all about ensuring that we treat some of the most vulnerable in our society as equal citizens rather than secondclass community members.

All of these are laudable sentiments and the proof of the pudding will be in the implementation.

A Catalyst for Change SELF-directed Support (SDS) could be a real catalyst for change in the provision of care, according to chamber member Craig Richardson of Killermont Investments (pictured).

“If consumers have greater control of the funds available to them, they can choose what services and products to buy. For example, chairlifts, security services, adult day care and home care,” he explained.

“I welcome the expansion of SDS and see it is a great opportunity for businesses to engage with this market. Consumers of care products and services will have control and choice over what they buy.

“This will create competition and prosperity in a market that is certain to grow.

SDS Giving People More Say CARE users organisations fought for the wider introduction of SDS support to enable people to have more say in accessing the services they need.

“People want to be able to say who comes into their home to look after them,” says Diamond Childcare Services director Janice Heath.

Enabling More Fulfilling and Independent Lives

For them SDS could be an opportunity to expand as parents should have the resources to choose which service they want to use.

SDS will enable people to live more fulfilling and independent lives, according to East Dunbartonshire Council’s convener of social work.

The company provides flexible childcare including befriending, a sitter service, parents’ help and out-of-school care. It also offers home care/respite for children with additional needs.

Councillor Michael O’Donnell (pictured), added: “SDS will make quite a difference to the way in which some people in East Dunbartonshire access services, so it is important that everyone fully understands the changes and the options available to them.

“If I needed care services, I would want to choose.”

They reckon it will take around 10 years for the new regime to really bed in.

“In principle it is a good idea but in practice it will be a challenge rolling it out, making it work and bringing it to fruition,” Maxine added.

“SDS is about making sure that service users can access support to live the way they wish to. With SDS people will have greater choice.”

The council has been gearing up for the expansion of Self Directed Support on 1 April.

It has strategies in place to support the process, has established both a steering group and a practitioner’s group, and has a dedicated SDS web page with information about the options plus details of useful social work contacts.

It has provided training for social work staff and information briefings on the benefits of SDS for local voluntary groups, service users and carer forums.

The council also has a contract with an independent direct payment support service, based in Kirkintilloch, which provides advice, information, and support to service users and carers on all aspects of SDS options, including the recruitment of personal assistants. www.eddpss.co.uk

Erskine Bridge Roadworks Pledge TRANSPORT Scotland (TS) has promised to try to speed up completion of the Erskine Bridge roadworks following pressure from MSP Jackie Baillie and Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce.

It will keep traffic management under review and look at ways of intensifying the work schedule, including possible 24/7 operation, if it can overcome a shortage of skilled staff and noise restrictions.

It is also likely that that the northbound carriageway and slip-road from Erskine could be opened in advance of the scheduled completion date of 31 May, ending a lengthy detour.

The 10-month barrier upgrade project has caused long delays and driver frustration at certain times resulting in severe criticism and concern about emergency services.

Chamber president Stewart Rennie attended a meeting with TS officials organised by Dumbarton constituency MSP Ms Baillie in January. He said he was concerned about the impact of the works on members’ businesses, as well as on emergency services, and sought assurances from TS. “The Erskine Bridge is a lifeline route to hospital services, shopping facilities and work for many people in Dumbarton, Helensburgh and the Vale of Leven,” said Ms Baillie.

“It is crucial that the work is completed as soon as possible so I would encourage Transport Scotland to keep looking for ways to move ahead of schedule.”

TS will now publish actual journey times rather than delay times on electronic signs to provide drivers with more useful information.

It will also review the documentation available on its website and whether further information could be published.

The May completion date will be reassessed in late February – however TS has pointed out the works are weather dependent.

Council launches free alerts to protect businesses from disruptions THE COUNCIL is launching a free text alert system for local businesses to warn them of disruptions in the area, such as traffic problems on the A82, major incidents in the area, or severe weather.

The move is just one of a number of ways West Dunbartonshire Council is supporting businesses to prepare in case an emergency, crisis or disruption hits their firm.

Severe weather, power failure and cyber crime are three examples of risks to business activities across the UK. In West Dunbartonshire other factors which could impact on firms include the lack of a diversionary route on the A82. All of these could all be diminished or eliminated through robust business continuity planning.

Business continuity is about identifying what might interrupt a firm’s operation and developing plans and arrangements to reduce those risks and ensure prompt recovery.

As well as the text alert system, the Council can also help signpost local businesses to business continuity planning tools and is keen to establish a community of interest in the local area. This will, through prior thought and planning ahead for inevitable disruptions, help to ensure businesses are not left counting the cost in future.

This activity comes as the Council joins with organisations across the globe to mark Business Continuity Awareness Week on 17 to 21 March.

Councillor Kath Ryall, Convener of Corporate Services, said: “Business continuity is about assessing what could go wrong and planning to minimise disruption should the worst happen.

“At West Dunbartonshire Council we fully prepared to for any crisis thanks to the robust business continuity plan which we have in place. I would encourage all local businesses to adopt the same approach to ensure they are protected.”

The Pirrie Brothers’ Story WHAT makes a multi-millionaire get out of bed to go to work? For James Pirrie, it was important to set a good example for his nine-year-old daughter.

“We also ensured that if an enquiry came in before 4pm then a quote would go out that same day – a far faster response time than our competitors.”

When James and his brother, John, sold their business, LCH Generators to Speedy Hire plc for £62 million in 2006, they never had to work again if they didn’t want to.

Both brothers also spoke about taking opportunities when they arose and of knowing the value of your product.

“But I didn’t want my daughter to get the idea you could just get money for nothing,” James told members of Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce.

LCH started off in a small way in John’s bedroom at home in Balfron in 1980 and ended up based in Milngavie.

John puts their success down to three things – being faster than the competition, attention to detail, and getting the right people into the right jobs.

He added: “Even when we were selling second-hand generators we would always clean them up, paint them and then wrap them in polythene so that when they were delivered the client thought they were getting an ‘as new’ product.

Their talk, at The Eagle Lodge in Bishopbriggs, was described by chamber president, Stewart Rennie as “one of the most fascinating discussions we have had recently and an inspiration to all chamber members.”

Manager Job Was ‘A Gamble’ Reveals Sons’ Ian Murray THERE’S no need to ‘rant and rave’ to get the best out of your team according to Ian Murray, player/manager of Dumbarton Football Club.

He advocates treating players well, ensuring they are looked after and that they have the confidence and self-belief to succeed.

“They need to know they are in your squad because they are good enough,” he told members of Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce.

The 32-year-old admitted that appointing him was a gamble both for the club and for himself when he spoke at a chamber meeting in the club’s Bet Butler Stadium.

“I had to turn the club around quickly, turn a negative into a positive. We didn’t have a year or even six months – it was all about the short term goal. It was a challenge.

“We beat everyone in the league last season as a part-time club. The players have to take most of the credit for that. They adapted exceptionally well.

“Players worry about their performance, about their place on the team. They need to have the attitude and confidence to succeed and it is my job to make sure they do.

“What happens in the changing room is vital to what happens on the pitch. You must have the trust of staff and have people you can delegate to.”

He revealed that that the Sons’ ‘underdog mentality’ had worked to their advantage but acknowledged that this season was different as expectations were now higher.

Ian played for Hibs, Rangers and Norwich City, gaining six Scottish international caps along the way.

Chamber president Stewart Rennie thanked Ian for his insight into the business of football and Dumbarton Football Club for hosting the event.

He also highlighted significant growth in tourists from Europe, particularly Germany, and from the Asia-Pacific region, while recognising the continuing importance of the UK, US and Canadian markets.
