Welcome Welcome to Haddington Golf Club’s Year Book for 2009.

I was pleased as Club Captain to be invited to prepare, on behalf of the Management Committee, this foreword for this our first Year Book.

The town of Haddington lies off the A1 road about 18 miles to the east of Edinburgh and is easily accessible from Central Scotland and Northern England. A former Royal Burgh, Haddington is a place of historic and architectural interest, which is at the heart of East Lothian, close to the City of Edinburgh and some of Scotland’s finest golf courses. All types of tourist accommodation are available in the town and surrounding area. The course is situated on the outskirts of Haddington.

Haddington Golf Club was inaugurated in 1865, when the founder members were given permission by Lord Elcho to play over Amisfield Park. We are rightly proud of our mature 18 hole par 71 parkland golf course laid out within the peaceful walled surroundings of what was the park of the former Amisfield House with the River Tyne forming its

northmost boundary. The course, set in 130 acres, with mature trees also contains a number of natural features and ponds, home to indigenous wildlife all of which combines to provide a challenge to golfers of all abilities.

Complementing the course is our Clubhouse, which was recently renovated and refurbished to provide both our members and their guests together with our visitors a relaxed, family friendly atmosphere. Please make the time to enjoy a drink, a snack or meal within either our bar lounge or first floor level dining room. The dining room enjoys a southerly aspect with views to the Lammermuir Hills and also overlooks the golf course.

Our Ladies, Gents and Junior sections are all very active, participating in a full and varied programme of competitions and events, arranged principally over the summer months but continuing throughout the year. The Club also hosts several Open Competitions and has been used by the Lothians Golf Association as a venue for various competitions as the course provides a very good test of skill.

Haddington Golf Club was inaugurated in 1865 when a party of players had come to Lennoxlove to play and entertain Mr Samuel Wilkinson, who was chosen to be the first Captain. The name Wilkinson is preserved in the unique Wilkinson Trophy, a silver mounted snuff box made from the hoof of an Arabian steed that had carried the colonel through the Crimean war. The first minutes of Haddington Golf Club in 1865 are held by the club.

In 1865 Lord Elcho gave permission to play during the winter months with the summer months playing at Gullane and Luffness.

1881 led to a withdrawal of the privilege of playing over Amisfield and the club obtained permission to hold winter meetings on Garleton Hill which was nine holes.

1894 the club decided to rent the nine hole course and this became the home of the club for more than twenty years.

In 1931 Amisfield (present site) officially opened by Lord Balfour (the photograph can be seen in the clubhouse). The total length of the course was 5,500 yards as against today’s length of 6,335 yards. Holes which have the same name as on the original course are Garleton (was the first, now the tenth), Cascade (was the third, now the fifteenth), Traprain (was the twelfth, now the fifth), Valley (was sixteenth, now the seventh), Quarryknowe (was the seventeenth and now the eighth with it being shortened to the Quarry). The season ticket was priced at £2!

The ladies section at Haddington is small, very friendly and active.

During the summer months – April/ September, we have tee times on a Wednesday afternoon and evening, with the occasional competition held at mid-day on a Saturday.

During the winter we play most Saturdays, with a turn-up on a Monday and Wednesday morning.

The ladies also take part in friendly inter-club matches in East Lothian and these take place on a Monday evening home and away.

For the slightly “older lady” we hold a monthly senior competition on a Friday morning throughout the summer, and we have also introduced the nine hole competition for seniors as well as everyone else.

Ladies’ Captain

At the beginning and end of the summer we play “short hole” competitions. These range from nine holes to thirteen holes.

These are all fun competitions in various forms, culminating at the end of September with a supper after playing nine holes.

Eclectic competitions are held throughout the summer and winter.

A weekend away is organised every year at the beginning of May where we play a couple of different courses over a few days.

The ladies always welcome new members, beginners or experienced golfers. We will always be happy to take a lady out to obtain her handicap.

Junior Golf

Haddington Golf Club has been providing Club golf coaching since 2005. Clubgolf is a partnership between Scottish Golf Union, Scottish Ladies Golf Association, Professionals Golfers’ Association, Golf Foundation and Sportscotland.

Volunteers who wish to get involved can undertake training and licensing through the PGA 2 day course provided at a local venue. Training is paid for by revenue generated from coaching.

Children at primary school are offered Firstclubgolf which uses multi-coloured modified clubs, rubberised balls and Velcro targets to give children a safe and enjoyable first experience of golf.

Children who are interested in further coaching are offered Clubgolf in their local area, this coaching is chargeable and paid for by the children/parents. The revenue generated from coaching is used to further develop Clubgolf and the Junior section within HGC. Clubgolf offers children a structured programme to support their development as golfers. Clubgolf is aligned with Scottish Golf’s player pathway ensuring opportunities for talented players to progress further based on their potential, commitment and achievement.

During 2009 30 children have participated in Clubgolf at Haddington Golf club with more wanting coaching each year. HGC currently has 5 coaches, coaching is flexible and can be fitted around other commitments.

By increasing participation of children in golf we can increase membership at HGC and other golf clubs securing future of golf clubs in Scotland. At HGC we have had some success with children and parents taking up membership.

After qualifying top of his class, at the PGA National Training Centre at Lillieshall, John became Teaching Professional, at Wheatley Golf Club, in South Yorkshire. Here he was instrumental in the development of a young junior called Ian Garbutt. Who subsequently went on to earn over a million pounds on the European Tour.

In 1985, at the age of 21, John became the youngest Club Professional in Scotland, when he took over as Professional at WinterďŹ eld GC, in Dunbar.

After nearly 5 years at WinterďŹ eld he moved to Haddington Golf Club in 1990, where he now combines his duties as Club Professional, with those of a more Managerial role, helping develop the Marketing and PR strategy of the Club.

Having taken over from Dave Henderson, as the Haddington Juniors Coach, John took the Junior Team to wins in the East Lothian Junior League and the County Cup. With one of the team, Mark Lamb, going on to become Scottish Youth Strokeplay Champion.

Now recognised as one of the countries top Coaches, John, has for the last 4 years been involved with the Lothians Golf Association, as one of their Junior Development Coaches.

He is also now the East Lothian County Boys Coach.

Competitions Haddington Golf Club organises several Open Competitions for Gents, Ladies and Junior competitors as well as events speciďŹ cally for senior golfers (50 and over).

These annual competitions are held over the Summer and Autumn seasons and include our Stroke play (Shaw Trophy), Greensomes, Mixed foursomes and a Texas Scramble competition.

The course which has been subject to several improvements this past season is a fair but challenging layout. The Club welcome

participation from golfers of other clubs who hold a national handicap certiďŹ cate. These annual Open competitions have a modest entrance fee and offer golfers the opportunity to play the course from the medal tees which adds to the competitive experience.

Our recently refurbished clubhouse offers a mixture of a relaxed, bistro style eatery in our members’ lounge or more formal dining in our bright, modern function suite, with spectacular panoramic views of the course.

Our catering team has been with us for three years, Patricia McMillan (Stewardess) and Scott McMillan (Chef) and offer a high level of catering and bar services in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

The clubhouse has a smart/casual dress code with emphasis on relaxation in smart, stylish surroundings. The lounge/dining area overlooks a seated outdoor patio and onto the 18th fairway and green.

Nature lovers can flock to The Bass Rock, rising 313 feet from the sea. It is the closest sea bird sanctuary to the mainland and was the first to be studied by ornithologists during the 19th century. The famous Bass Rock gannets cover the island, described

by Sir David Attenborough as "one of the wildlife wonders of the world".

In a stunning location overlooking the sea and sandy beaches, you'll enjoy a great day out at the Scottish Seabird Centre with its exciting Discovery Centre, Gift Shop and Cafe with open decking over the sea.

There are a lot of seabirds to be seen, including shags, cormorants, terns and kittiwakes. Dolphins and otters can also be spotted in the bay. John Muir Country Park can be enjoyed by

both a family enjoying the outdoors and the natural history enthusiast.

It supports a wide range of habitats, birds and plants.

Tantallon Castle & Bass Rock

Step back in history to some of Scotland's most impressive castles and stately homes. The ruins of Tantallon Castle, North Berwick are a formidable sight and offer spectacular views of Bass Rock.

Dirleton Castle, Dirleton boasts magnificent gardens, which now include the world’s longest herbaceous border. Lennoxlove House is perfect for a short break, a wedding reception, a corporate event, a golfing weekend or even as a retreat to simply get away from it all. Take a step back in time at Newhailes, an amazing survival of early 18th century decorative art and collections, set within a late 17th century ‘Villa’.

The National Museum of Flight at East Fortune Airfield invites the visitor to discover the extraordinary story of our human ambition to take to the skies. East Fortune played an important role during two World

Wars. Now the National Museum of Flight hangars are packed with aircraft that reveal how flight developed from the Wright brothers to Concorde.

The stunningly picturesque Preston Mill & Phantassie Doocot lies close to the River Tyne a few hundred yards downstream of East Linton. The present buildings are from the 18th century, though there has been a Mill on the site since the 16th century.

The Mill was used commercially until 1959 and visitors can still experience the working machinery on a tour.

And after all that, you will undoubtedly want to sample a 'wee dram'. Visit Glenkinchie Distillery and tour round the production area where you will learn how to make the water of life, and, of course, sample their excellent 12 Year Old Single Malt.

Course Notes Haddington Golf Course is owned and was maintained by East Lothian Council until 1995 when Haddington Golf Club secured a 90 year lease for the course.

The GC have invested heavily since then in: up to date Toro machinery; pop-up water system; and drainage, which now means the course is open virtually all year round except for snow. Four new large ponds have also been constructed which has worked wonders for the wildlife and has also given the golfers something to think about.

The course is now one of the ďŹ nest inland courses in the country, recently described as a hidden gem.

Practice Facilities

Lessons start from ÂŁ18 per half hour for Juniors, ÂŁ25 per half hour for adults and from ÂŁ60 per hour for group coaching.

Practise facilities include a driving range, approximately 300 yds in length, for which you must supply your own balls, a short game practise area including a bunker and 3 target greens, there is also a practise putting green at the clubhouse.

1st Hole If the flag is one the top half of the green take an extra club, bank at back of green will bring ball back down to putting surface. No prizes for being short.

2nd Hole Hitting the fairway from the tee is most important, otherwise a wood or a long iron from semi-rough will make this a very difficult 4.

3rd Hole A well positioned tee shot should set up a good birdie chance.

4th Hole Keep approach shot to the left as slope will bring ball onto green.

5th Hole An approach shot landing short of the green will generally run. Bear in mind O.O.B is just over the green.

6th Hole Hitting the fairway from the tee is most important as there is a lot of trouble to avoid both sides.

7th Hole A fairway wood from the tee to the bottom of the hill is the key to an easier approach shot. Check flag position on the 8th green, look to the left as you walk off the 7th tee.

8th Hole If you have checked flag position you should have a good idea how far up the green the flag is, take an extra club.

9th Hole Check tree tops surrounding green for wind direction as this may not be evident at ground level due to the shelter provided by houses.

10th Hole Make sure you take enough club for approach shot, as dip in front of green can be deceiving.

11th Hole A good drive will give you the choice to either go for the green to lay up short of the fairway bunkers.

12th Hole A good drive up the left will open the green, although targeting the bunker on the right side may prove the safer option.

13th Hole An approach shot played to front right corner of green will prove to be best option, will help to avoid water left of green 14th Hole In summer this green can be hard and fast, so a high tee shot landing softly will suit best.

15th Hole A good drive is a must. The right side of the fairway is the best place from which to attack the elevated green. A running approach is probably the best way to keep the ball on the green.

16th Hole The green is deceptively long, be sure to take enough club to carry on to the green.

17th Hole When the flag is in back portion of the green the ball will swing severely right to left when putting front to back.

18th Hole After avoiding bunkers from the tee an approach shot to the front right of green will feed towards the middle.
