e are already half way through 2015 and a lot has been happening, and not only on the political front. The Scottish Business Voice Campaign led by the Scottish Chamber of Commerce has been launched throughout the Chamber Network and has been shining the spotlight on the need for government to support Scottish businesses. More details about the Scottish Business Voice campaign can be found in this edition on page 30.

The Chamber Business Awards took place on the 19th March at the Doubletree by Hilton, Dunblane Hydro where over 340 business leaders attended the gala event to celebrate business success across the Forth Valley and beyond. These were our second Business Awards sponsored by the Ministry of Defence and the event was a sell-out.

We have now met with each of the local authorities and regional college within the Forth Valley, and are confident that a business-led Regional Invest in Youth Group can be established and be a meaningful partnership between business, schools and colleges. It is imperative that it is business-led and therefore we need your help. We will keep you up to date with what’s happening via all of our normal communication channels. Graham’s The Family Dairy reveals plans for a new £20m dairy processing, research and training centre in Stirling Graham’s The Family Dairy has revealed its plans to build a new £20m dairy, research and training facility in Stirling. The proposal has the potential to bring 450 new jobs to Graham’s heartland.

he Graham family, who have been farming in Stirlingshire for five generations, plan to create a new 150,000ft2 facility on farmland located west of Craigforth, directly opposite Stirling’s Agricultural Centre. It would feature production lines for milk, cream, cheese and spreadable butter as well as a dedicated research and training centre to allow for new product development.

The new facility has the potential to bring an additional £20m per annum GVA into the Stirling economy and would be in addition to Graham’s current dairy at Airthrey Kerse in Bridge of Allan, its processing plant in Nairn and depots throughout Scotland. A full planning application will be lodged to Stirling Council in June 2015 following a period of public consultation. This is being progressed in consultation with statutory consultees, including the community council, to help shape the project.

Launching the project, Robert Graham, Managing Director of Graham’s The Family Dairy and grandson of the founder, said: “It is a hugely exciting time to run a business in Scotland. There is so much potential in the dairy industry.

“Investing in Stirling runs through my family’s history and our business. That is why we want to build the new dairy processing, research and training centre here, in Stirling. Stirling is our home. It is where we farm, live and, from our dairy at Airthrey Kerse, employ more than 500 people throughout Scotland. Stirling has the key attributes a business needs; a high quality education system, accessibility, dynamic business culture, an outstanding environment and an ambitious and inspiring city economic strategy.

“Our research forecasts that by combining a new, modern dairy processing facility with a research and training centre that has strong links into the local education system and a proactive local recruitment policy, Graham’s can significantly strengthen the Stirling economy and place the City at the forefront of the Scottish food and drink sector.

“We are excited to have found the perfect location for such a venture. Being within the Stirling city corridor it can enable the benefits in terms of job creation, expenditure and new infrastructure to be harnessed within the City. It has excellent

transport infrastructure, a landscape that can accommodate the scale of enterprise envisaged and the ability to consolidate around series of the rural based land uses and grow this business cluster.

“The new dairy will cost in the region of £20m and would deliver a step change in the Scottish dairy sector. To set this scale of investment in context our business turnover for the year 2014 was £85m, with a profit margin of under two per cent. We are constantly reinvesting into the business and the Graham’s brand with a capital expenditure of £15m invested in the last six years and more than £4.5m earmarked for 2015.

“However, we will not borrow the sums required to finance this venture. This would place the whole business, 500 staff, 98 farming partners and their families, and all those who rely upon us at risk. The £20m capital expenditure for our new dairy is subject to the outcome of our Airthrey Green development proposals currently sitting with Stirling Council. This exciting and much needed housing and amenity project on our land at Airthrey Kerse would provide significant capital to strategically invest in the long-term future of our business. Should these not come forward then Graham’s will have to continue a multi-site investment programme across Scotland that would inevitably be at the expense of the Stirling economy.

“The time for this investment is now, to protect the industry against market volatility.

Developing the right processing capacity to design, manufacture and market new dairy brands is central to achieving this national aim. Continuing our family tradition, I wish to make this investment in Stirling.”

The plans respond to the huge potential that exists in Scotland to produce and market premium Scottish dairy products in 2015, the Year of Food & Drink and is closely aligned with Stirling Council’s new economic strategy.

Richard Lochhead MSP, the Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs, Food and Environment commented on the announcement by saying: “This proposal from Graham’s The Family Dairy is fantastic news for the dairy industry in Scotland and for the local economy. This is a real vote of confidence in the future of the Scottish dairy sector and I’ve no doubt this exciting project will help Graham’s The Family Dairy cement their reputation as one of our leading dairy companies and brands.

The plans for the new development are for a bespoke, modern dairy processing research and training facility, and forecasts are the project will create: • 400 new jobs across all sectors including processing, research, design, logistics, marketing, administration and management • 900 total jobs employed by Graham’s The Family Dairy • 50 apprenticeships for Stirling and a local employment strategy (A modern apprenticeship course is being structured with Forth Valley College tailored to modern skills covering areas such as process, logistics, branding and design within the food and drink sector) • Create the capacity for 350 million litres of milk per year • An additional £20m per annum GVA into the Stirling economy • Develop Stirling’s profile as a major Scottish ‘hub’ for the food and drink sector, supporting new business start up ventures and relocations to Stirling • Support the achievement of the Scottish Dairy Review – ‘Ambition 2025’

HQ 51 INFANTRY BRIGADE AND HQ SCOTLAND 51st Infantry Brigade is the first of the Army’s Adaptable Force Brigades, providing headquarters and units for lengthy operations, standing commitments, overseas Defence Engagement, and UK civil engagement.

As Headquarters Scotland, the Brigade, based at Forthside in Stirling, looks after all the Army units in Scotland and is responsible for providing Firm Base support for all Regular, Reserve, Army Cadet Force units and the four University Officer Training Corps.

Both Regular and Reserve Army units are spread throughout Scotland and offer widespread opportunities for full time and part time roles ranging from Engineering and IT communications to driving and HR. Lifelong and transferable skills are key to the Army’s success together with the challenge, excitement and rewards of achieving professional and personal goals. 51st Infantry Brigade and Headquarters Scotland (formerly 51 (Scottish) Brigade) was officially stood up on 31 Mar 14 as part of the transformation of the British Army from 2020 and beyond (Army 2020).

The programme may be suitable for current employees interested in a development or progression opportunity who would benefit from adding a digital dimension to their role or it could also be the perfect solution for those working in a digital media role who are seeking a formal qualification.

Leadership – an Art or a Skill?

I

n the Autumn 2014 edition of InCommerce, the commander of 51st Infantry Brigade (The brigade responsible for many of the military units in Scotland) gave his perspective on ‘Leading in the Modern Scotland’ and compared the differences between corporate management and military leadership. Since then it has been my job to show that those differences can be bridged, and that direct, strong leadership is as important a skill set in the civilian world as in the military.

The Army in Scotland recently ran a pilot version of a personal development course in collaboration with Forth Valley Chamber of Commerce and the University of Stirling. The “Leadership in Practice” course is now in the second year of delivery to universities the length and breadth of the UK. Many of the skills that have been taught to university students during that time are readily applicable to junior managers just setting out on their careers in the civilian sector. The point of the course however is NOT to teach management techniques: it’s specifically designed to develop young leaders, and to pass on the skills required by leaders to take their people in a direction of travel in which they may not wish to go.

Leadership is often referred to as an art, and any internet search will turn up 1000s of reference articles in that vein. I disagree – Leadership is not an art, it is not an intangible, indefinable Zen state of being. Leadership is a skill, and the basics of that skill can be taught. Why do so many consultants use the term art instead of skill when referring to Leadership? The explanation is simple. When we consider more easily quantifiable skills such as carpentry, vehicle repair, engineering etc, the talent required will eventually plateau out and any further development of skills will diminish. Leadership on the other hand is a skill in which only the building blocks and basic tools can be taught. Truly effective leaders are those who have the ability to recognise continuously throughout life that their suite of emotional tools and interaction skills have to be modified, tweaked and calibrated every single time a new challenge or situation arises. The basic skills remain the same but adjustments to new situations require subtlety in the choice of which emotions and characteristics to utilise in the precise mix for each situation.

Imagine a colour palette and mix a tiny bit of compromise with a big dollop of determination, then add a little smidgen of intelligence and experience around the edges and you might yet believe that Leadership can be an art. An effective leader may get close to choosing the perfect colour for each occasion. However the MOST effective leaders are able to recognise that no matter how well they mix the colour of their palette they could probably have done better, and they also know that perfection is unattainable in reality. Ultimately leadership is about people responding to people, and no two leaders will mix their palette in the same way to become effective. Your palette is personal and unique, and the real ‘art’ of leadership is being able to change, ever so imperceptibly, the shades and tones of your colour to best effect at

This is an ongoing skill although “Keeping your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you” is always a good place to begin!

So now here is a challenge for you. I’d like to set you on a path which may, at first glance, appear to be against your own best interests and instincts. The next time either in work, with family or with friends you think, “Hmm, the interaction I just had with that person could have gone better,” think about the situation in the third person. Relive the conversation and really try to look at yourself in the most objective way you can… be self critical, be unforgiving and uncompromising towards yourself.

Then analyse the mix of emotions and character traits you used and try to find a better (more suitable) palette.

But most importantly, never become complacent and take your leadership or indeed personal interaction skills for granted no matter how effective you become. Always be prepared to look back in the mirror with a self-critical eye to continue striving for perfection whilst recognising it will for ever be out of reach.

Chamber Members achieve Gold Standard

G

raham Robertson of Graham Robertson Electrical and Security Ltd has something to shout about with the award of the NSI (National Security Inspectorate) Fire Gold Certification.

The company had to undergo a rigorous accreditation approval process to attain Gold Standard, to add to their existing NSI accreditation on intruder alarms, cctv and access control.

The Gold Standard relates to the design, installation, commissioning, handover verification and maintenance of fire detection and alarm systems and this was acknowledged in their letter of commendation which read, “Congratulations on attaining this approval. Sons of the Rock

I

n January 1809, a group of Glasgow merchants and tradesmen living in Stirlingshire got together to found a Society to give practical and financial assistance to people in the former county boundary who would otherwise have been destitute.

Living conditions for many at that time were harsh, with no social security of any kind, and strict conditions of residence were laid down on the eligibility of families to become pensioners of the Society. Like many other county benevolent associations established in the early years of the nineteenth century, the Society flourished and in 1871 amalgamated with its counterpart for the town of Stirling.

Latterly, with the advent of the welfare state, the need for role played by these charitable organisations gradually diminished to the point that today the Sons of the Rock Society is the only surviving

example of this type of charity in Scotland – ironically, just at the time that pressure on budgets for social services has meant that demand for crisis stop gap help for disadvantaged people in Stirlingshire is increasing day by day.

Within the Stirling and Falkirk Council areas, the Society gives grants to improve the quality of life for individuals from any age group who are disadvantaged by social or educational need or disability and who are identified by a carer, Minister, or social / community education worker. The grant might cover the cost of some equipment, a training course, completion of a creative project, or a holiday with a carer.

In the same geographical areas, support can also be given to voluntary sector organisations providing services or projects that enable individuals, families and local communities to overcome disadvantage or provide added benefit to the wider community through a new or extended service for the same purpose, including involvement in cultural, heritage or performing arts projects. The activities supported must include at least one measurable outcome and cannot be a major fundraising appeal.

Uniquely for a funding body, the Sons of the Rock Society is also a Membership organisation, providing the opportunity for local business people to give something back to the community in the knowledge

that the funds provided (a minimum annual donation of £25 per member) will be matched by the Society’s investment income to directly finance the Sons of the Rock grants programme. Members receive regular updates about the work of the Society through receiving Newsletters or attending social evenings that are held twice per year, one of which is the Annual Meeting, part of which is given over to hearing from recipients how their grants have affected the quality of their lives.

Even though the need for businesses to play a part in supporting their less fortunate fellow citizens of Stirlingshire is not as crucial as it was over 200 years ago, it is still an ever present and growing one.

Bibby Financial Services strengthens Scotland team Appointment follows solid year of growth for business funder

pecialist funder Bibby Financial Services has reinforced its Inverness, Stirlingshire and Perthshire team with the appointment of Alex Russon as Business Development Manager.

Alex brings 14 years’ experience in invoice finance having joined the specialist funder from Lloyds Commercial Finance, and also having previously worked for Barclays.

With so many years of experience specialising in invoice finance, Alex said joining Bibby Financial Services felt like his logical next step.

The effect of glass walls on women achieving top management roles

G

lass walls are proving an initial obstacle to women in the workplace, ahead of the glass ceiling, with them being ‘boxed into’ certain roles.

Professor Sharon Bolton, Head of the Management School at the University of Stirling, and the Dean of Equality & Diversity, says occupational segregation by gender prevents women from advancing to the top positions in management.

Professor Bolton said: “To be selected for top management jobs, it is necessary to have diverse experience across different company areas. As long as women are boxed into certain roles, this will not happen – hence the need to break down glass walls before women can break through the glass ceiling to top management.”

According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), jobs such as human resource management, public relations and communication are almost entirely female dominated. But women are a much smaller minority in functional areas like finance, research, operations, and general management.

In middle management roles, the ILO in its recent report ‘Women in Business and Management: Gaining Momentum’ refers to an equal 50:50 gender split. Female CEOs of publicly listed companies however, number less than five per cent in OECD countries, and 2.8 per cent in the European Union.

In the UK, women comprise 60 per cent of junior managers, 40 per cent of middle managers, 20 per cent at senior levels and less than half of that in CEO positions. This gender-based pyramid structure, identified by the Chartered Management Institute, is not unique to the UK. While FTSE 100 companies may have experienced a rise in the number of women on company boards last year, this reflects an increase in nonexecutive, as opposed to executive directors. The former do not have the same involvement in the daily running of the company.

Professor Bolton - a winner at the prestigious Institute of Directors Scotland Director of the Year Awards held recently - said: “When examining differences in workplace opportunity, management roles are useful indicators of equality. Becoming a manager or senior executive offers the largest chance to achieve economic equality and to influence access for other women in the labour market.”

She said that women’s position in the global labour market did not simply reflect their actual skills and career choices, but was a product of institutionalised exclusion. While allowing for the mass entry of women to certain occupations, this was responsible for keeping them unequally positioned economically.

Professor Bolton notes that without action, the ILO forecast that it could take as long as 200 years for women to achieve parity with men at management level globally and 80 years in developed countries is realistic.

ViNE continues to grow Our ViNE project (Veterans into New Enterprise) received a boost recently with an award of funding from the Community Covenant Grant Fund for a further 100 places to be delivered over the next 12 months. The project supports ex-forces personnel and their families into entrepreneurship by offering structured support from that first idea, through to starting trading and beyond. Working closely with a range of military and civilian support agencies, we are looking forward to seeing our ViNE businesses bearing fruit as the year goes on.

Social Enterprises

– What are they and how do they work?

e hear a lot in the media about Social Enterprises but many people are still confused as to what they actually are and how they differ from other types of enterprise. Duncan Thorp, Communications Officer with Social Enterprise Scotland, answers the FAQS!

What is a social enterprise?

What’s the difference between a social enterprise, a social business and a social firm?

Social enterprises are independent businesses that exist to deliver a specific social and/ or environmental mission. This could be employing homeless people, recycling waste or something similar. They aim to make profit like any other business, but invest 100% of it in their social purpose. Social enterprises in Scotland are “asset locked” (all property, money etc. can only be used for a social mission). They’re a more ethical and sustainable way of doing business. Social enterprises are not charities that get most income from grants/donations and they’re not a business simply behaving ethically or an arms-length company of a public body.

What examples are there?

Diverse examples include: The Big Issue, The Wise Group, Social Bite, Divine Chocolate, Cornerstone, Kibble Education and Care, media co-op, Glasgow Housing Association, Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust, Link Group Ltd,

Are social enterprises not-forprofits?

No. All social enterprises aim to make profit, just like any other business. The only difference is that they invest 100% of profit into a social and/or environmental mission.

Sometimes different phrases are used but for clarity we use the specific term “social enterprise”. With no legal definition this helps distinguish authentic social enterprises. A social firm is a specific type of social enterprise that helps people with disabilities or other similar challenges. We also use “more-than-profit” and support the Voluntary Code of Practice for Social Enterprise in Scotland.

How many social enterprises are there in Scotland and how big is their impact?

We’re a relatively small part of the wider economy but growing. The last estimate of the number in Scotland is 3500, though we believe this figure is much higher. See Scale as well as Substance - Social Enterprise in Glasgow and the more recent Scotland-wide

Mapping Social Enterprise in Scotland. A first full, comprehensive mapping exercise will be completed in 2015. There are also local statistics from Social Enterprise Networks (SENs), such as Dundee and Edinburgh.

How is Scotland doing in terms of social enterprise?

Scotland is leading the way internationally in terms of social enterprise support and development, sometimes referred to as “the Scottish model” of doing business. There’s currently strong policy support from The Scottish Government and Parliament and all political parties at Holyrood.

What models of social enterprise exist?

The more-than-profit approach is used by many organisations, of every size, operating in every corner of Scotland and in many sectors of the economy. A social enterprise is often just a Company Limited

by Guarantee with an “asset lock” and social mission. It could also be a registered charity, Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO), Co-operative, Mutual, Social Firm, Community Interest Company (CIC), Development Trust, Credit Union or Housing Association (Registered Social Landlord / RSL).

Scotland’s first canal college beats targets, contributes almost £1m in volunteer time and concludes with a splash!

Y

oung volunteer participants who have benefitted from the Scottish Waterways Trust’s canal college over the project’s two-year run gathered to celebrate their achievements at The Falkirk Wheel on Wednesday 13th May. canal college®, which is the Scottish Waterways Trust’s largest project to date, was designed to help tackle unemployment amongst young people aged between 16 and 25 years who are living in Falkirk and Edinburgh and who have suffered setbacks in their life.

Since opening in June 2013, 165 young people have taken part in canal college, which was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the European Union Interreg IVB North West Europe project ‘Green & Blue Futures’, Scottish Natural Heritage and Scottish Canals.

Of those taking part up to January this year, over 60% have already moved on to a job or training course, further education or a new volunteering role.

Twenty four regular volunteer mentors have supported the young people through the 14 week heritage skills training programme.

The final figures exceed the original target of 144 young participants and six volunteer mentors.

Over the two years, the young volunteers also contributed 14,712 hours towards work on the canals and the mentors contributed 4,856 hours.

The Scottish Waterways Trust is now busy fundraising for Canal College 2.

Ross Martin, Chair of Scottish Waterways Trust, commended the young people saying: “Canal College has been a resounding success for so many reasons. It’s wonderful to see all the young people who have taken part celebrating their achievements. Boosted by new confidence, skills and self-esteem, many of them have already moved on to a brighter future. They have transformed bare land into landscaped resting spots, painstakingly uncovered heritage structures giving them a new lease of life and made vital repairs to stonework on bridges and pathways amongst other improvements.”

Falkirk Provost Pat Reid added: “Canal College has been a great example of how our less advantaged young people can access training. The benefits to the young people have been considerable and show

a high social return for a relatively small amount of investment. I am very sorry to see the present funding come to an end and hope very much that alternative sources will be found ASAP.” During the 14 week heritage skills training programme, the young people, and their volunteer mentors, have gained wide ranging practical experience whilst working on the historic Forth & Clyde and Union canals and at The Falkirk Wheel.

Topics have included landscaping, tree planting and vegetation management, wildlife conservation, trail creation, canal engineering and maintenance. In Falkirk, the young people undertook the shallow excavation of three locks in the historic Falkirk Lock Flight, which had lain covered since the 1960s. The new heritage attraction will become part of the visitor experience at The Falkirk Wheel and be cared for by volunteers through Archaeology Scotland’s Adopt a Monument Scheme.

During the two day a week Canal College programme, participants also worked towards a number of awards to boost their CV including Youth Achievement and Saltire awards and help was given help with job seeking and interview skills.

Trusty Trades launches Trusty Professionals

L

ynn Hunter resigned from the bank after nearly 30 years’ service to spend more time with her husband, Les, and their first grandchild.

But after investing in a couple of local houses which they rented out, out they discovered a problem – a distinct shortage of reliable and trustworthy tradesmen.

So, with the help of friends and neighbours in Grangemouth, she set up Trusty Trades back in 2011.

Four years on, with over 70 tradesmen listed on the website which gets 5000 hits each month, she is expanding throughout Central Scotland and beyond and as the word spreads of the businesses’ success, Lynn has launched TrustyProfessionals using the same business model.

She said: “Setting up Trusty Trades was a very simple idea. We all chipped in details of tradesmen we’d used and trusted and I put a simple website together so we could share the info and the feedback.”

“The listed tradesmen are benefitting by getting extra work and local people are benefitting by knowing that any tradesmen they employ have been recommended by their customers and are then monitored from customer feedback.”

She added: “TrustyProfessionals operates in the same way. Before any professional business can be considered for membership of TrustyProfessionals they have to be recommended to us by one of their customers.”

Once recommended, we ask for contact details for two recent customers whom we contact for references. Provided we are happy with these we then arrange a meeting with the professional to learn about them and their business and to explain how we work and our expectations.

Only if we’re comfortable with each other at this stage will we proceed further.

The professional is invited to set up their listing on the website and submit it to

us for approval and publication, and they are bound by the terms and conditions which govern expectations of our members.

Business Mentoring Cariss Moir (Moirs Cleaning) & Bob McGowan

I

nterviews with successful entrepreneurs inform us that at some stage of their development, most have sought out a mentor. Mentoring is the process by which one person assists another to grow and learn in a safe and sympathetic relationship. When Cariss Moir contacted us she recognised that her business had huge potential but was not growing as fast as she would like. Moirs Cleaning had been in operation since 2005 and had built up a reputation for high quality and standards in both domestic

and commercial cleaning. With 22 employees and a hectic workload, Cariss never seemed to have time to look at her business’ strategy. When she was introduced to her mentor Bob McGowan the first thing they did was sit down and establish expectations. This set the scene for their on-going relationship and Cariss is delighted with what has been achieved.

What business and personal development issues did you work on?

Bob and I worked on how I could show belief and confidence in employees and develop a positive risk-taking mind set. We also analysed profitable income streams and profiled the company needs including succession planning, employee retention and recruitment. Other areas discussed were long term business development, how to maximise employee performance and preparation for key developments of the business. Even after three or four weeks of having met with Bob there was a very positive impact.

Why did you join mentoring?

My business partner was moving on and I felt I needed someone to reflect with and to bounce ideas off. The business had been stable for four years and I felt it needed to expand, but moving to a ‘sole owner position’ made me anxious making decisions on my own. The recession had dented confidence to expand but I was also aware that expansion would provide financial security in the long term. I felt that a business mentor may assist me in taking positive steps forward.

How did the mentoring relationship work?

Yes, we have increased our turnover over the last quarter, our client base has increased and we have increased our employee numbers. The process has definitely had an impact and more of what I do is now less trial and error and more application of knowing what works. The learning has been at the right time and the context and timing has added value to the business.

Engagement in the process has paralleled business expansion, we have had a 12% increase in clients, turnover increased by 16%, we’ve added 1 new vehicle and had a 13% increase in staff!

Bob and I met on a monthly basis with meetings lasting 1 to 1.5 hours.

The format operated as a framework to ensure coverage of key areas and began with re-engaging from the previous meeting, updating on current issues and then reflecting on previously assigned actions. We then moved on to agreement on actions to take over the forthcoming period and this covered issues of priority to the business and personal development.

Why did you think mentoring worked so well for you?

Was this effective?

Would you recommend Business Mentoring Scotland to other businesses?

Yes – this has been most evident in planning. Writing things down has made it real and the external accountability has ensured commitment.

This has given me self-belief and a positive mind-set in developing trust in others, improved communication and in delegation and empowering others in my business.

I have delegated control and power to employees but with responsibility and accountability. This has freed me up to be more proactive in business development and less reactive in managing day to day issues. I also now have better awareness as a business leader and how my input can influence the team.

I would definitely recommend mentoring. Bob has helped increase my confidence in my decision making and the plans I put in place as part of the mentoring process have been achieved. It has been a very positive experience.

Labels4Kids expands with Disney Frozen

L

abels4Kids has grown again in 2014 after the move to new offices in Pitt Terrace in May and the successful win of John Lewis contracts for school name labels during the year. During summer 2014 Labels4Kids decided to expand into other areas in an attempt to grow the offering to parents and to build a second peak for the year and make the business less seasonal. “There is only so far you can grow your one peak of the year and we are already expanding into Europe with name labels so I thought what better than other personalised kids items and gifts fit perfectly with that thinking” said Ann-Maree Morrison, Founder and Managing Director.

For some time now Labels4Kids has been supplying parents, boarding schools, care homes, super yachts that sail the Med and the Caribbean and now Ann-Maree Morrison, winner of Entrepreneur of the year in the 2014 Forth Valley Chamber Awards and of Best E-Commerce Strategy in the 2015 Awards has expanded into personalised gifts. The introduction of personalised gifts started last year with a link up with another local business, Snapdragon.

Since the success of these products Ann-Maree has been looking to introduce a range for Disney, Hasbro and Nickolodeon. Winning a license with these businesses is almost impossible for an SME as you need a multi million pound turnover and many years of production and designs being vetted and approved. In order to get around these licensing issues Ann-Maree approached another multi million pound business already successfully producing a fully approved range and already having licenses with all of Disney, Hasbro and Nickolodeon to manufacture their licensed products. Now these have been successfully added to Labels4Kids personalised gift range.

“Labels4Kids expertise is in e-commerce, customer services, identifying niches and providing high quality personalised products for parents” said Ann-Maree Morrison. “Whether we produced these in house or outsource our concentration is on being able to provide anything to parents that fits with our branding, that we thoroughly test and where we know it is a high quality product and we can give a high quality of service for it”. They source and provide high quality products that are personalised and primarily target the school market.

Labels4Kids does print in house but it also outsources to a trusted

confidential supplier list. The new range has just gone live and is a massive success to date. Labels4Kids will be selling personalised Disney Frozen and Spongebob name labels and iron on name tags as well as personalised books, clocks and placemats. There are other characters in the range like Ninga Turtles, the Avengers, Disney Princess, Dora the Explorer and even Monsters Inc. “Disney Frozen is just massive and we want to be part of its’ success so what better way than offering parents the chance to see their child’s name up in lights with Anna and Elsa!” said Ann-Maree.

2015 should see a bigger growth for Labels4Kids. Bo’ness Academy’s The Wee Box Company rise to the challenge in Forth Valley

oung Enterprise Scotland are pleased to announce that The Wee Box Company from Bo’ness Academy won Best Overall Company in Forth Valley at their local finals in Stirling. The young company came out on top after submitting a business report; being judged on their trade stands and delivering a business presentation to the assembled peers and guests at the Albert Halls, Stirling.

The Wee Box Company, whose mission was to “provide good quality themed gift ideas for friends and family at an affordable price” also won Best Presentation; Runner Up Best Trade Stand; Runner Up Best Use of Branding; Runner Up Most Innovative Business; Runner Up Most Effective Sales Technique and will

now go on to represent Forth Valley at the Scottish finals.

The Wee Box Company produced a range of themed gift boxes, initially ‘Spa in a Box’; ‘Christmas in a Box’; and ‘Retro Sweets in a Box’. After Christmas the company replaced ‘Christmas in a Box’ and ‘Sweets in a Box’ with ‘Valentine’s Day in a Box’ and ‘Chocolate Heaven in a Box’. The Wee Box Company used ivory coloured boxes with a silk finish and the customer could customize their purchase by adding various coloured organza ribbon and gift tags.

The Wee Box Company generated over £500 in sales over the course of their Company Programme experience at various events. They sold their products at school events, parents’ nights, Community Café Projects, ASDA Grangemouth, and at all three Forth Valley trade fairs in Falkirk, Grangemouth and Stirling.

Some members of the Wee Box Company team were initially reluctant to

attend trade fairs and selling events as they lacked confidence in dealing with the public.

After some coaching and reassurance from the people who had attended the events, these team members realized that selling to customers was actually fun.

“The best part of the Programme for us as a team was being involved at the Trade Fairs and different selling events: actively selling our products and interacting with customers.”

The team’s Link Teacher, Carole McPeake, was very proud of what the team had achieved and has watched the young people grow together as a team.

“The most fulfilling part of being involved in YES’s Company Programme was to observe team members grow as individuals, take more ownership and develop key business and interpersonal skills.”

The team will now be working hard to prepare for the Scottish Finals event being held in June in Glasgow.

Testing Times for Employers

A

ristotle and Thomas Jefferson are both credited with saying that “there is nothing as unequal as the equal treatment of unequals”.

Both recognised that treating everyone the same is fundamentally unfair. People have different preferences and motivations so treating everyone the same, even when well intentioned, can result in dissatisfaction and even conflict.

Recognising employees’ differing needs and motivations helps you better understand people, what influences engagement and performance, and help avoid conflict in the workplace.

Tests are widely available that help identify factors that influence people’s performance and interactions at work.

Identifying individual preferences and perceived strengths is particularly useful in recruitment and promotion to identify

“best fit”, or informing career planning.

Used within teams they help people better understand each other – particularly useful as most conflict within teams has a basis in a clash of preferences.

Tests in Recruitment Recruitment is expensive, and can be even more so if the wrong candidate is appointed. Qualifications and previous experience are good indicators. Tests which identify candidates’ aptitude to do the job and potential fit with the business can be invaluable.

Tests can measure a wide range of aptitudes for jobs at all levels. Many focus on what’s known as fluid intelligence, (the general ability to think abstractly, reason, identify patterns, solve problems etc).

• Verbal Reasoning – focuses on candidates’ ability to identify critical

issues from written material, reach conclusions and make decisions from written facts or data.

• Abstract Reasoning – these tests use series of shapes with common logical rules, candidates are expected to identify the rules and make decisions based on them, eg the next shape in a series • Numerical Reasoning – focuses on candidates’ ability to quickly identify critical issues from numerical data, such as graphs and tables, reach conclusions and make decisions from data illustrating performance or financial outcomes.

• Other tests focus on subjects like Spatial Awareness, Situational Awareness and Judgement

Personality Tests These tests focus on preferences rather than ability. How individuals like to work, relate to others, their problem solving approach and

There are no right or wrong answers.

MBTI (Myers Briggs Type Indicator) is based on the work of Carl Jung.

• The Extraversion (E) and Introversion (I) dimension identifies if preferences focus on the outer world or own inner world.

This is primarily about where you take your energy from. It’s not about being an extrovert or an introvert.

• The Sensing (S) and Intuition (I) dimension focuses on how individuals prefer to take in information. Sensing is about using solid facts whilst Intuition is more about possibilities. It’s not about being sensitive or intuitive!

• The Thinking (T) and Feeling (F) dimension focuses on individuals’ decision making preferences. The “T” preference looks for logic and consistency, stepping outside the problems while an “F” preference is primarily the people factors.

• The Judging (J) and Perceiving (P) dimension focuses on how individuals prefer to deal with the outside world.

A “J” preference likes things ordered, planned and decided, where as a “P” preference likes to stay open to new information and options, before making a final decision.

Insights Discovery uses colours to represent individual preferences, and also has its roots in Jung’s work.

• Fiery Red – concerned primarily with action, efficiency and effectiveness.

Being assertive and decisive, people with this preference may sometimes show less concern for other people and their feelings.

• Sunshine Yellow – primarily focussed on future possibilities. Highly sociable and may be seen as more imaginative and creative than others. Often moving from one idea to another other, people with this preference can be seen as impractical and unrealistic at times • Cool Blue – primarily about facts, logic and analysis of the world. They like to work systematically, have a plan and like things organised. People with this preference may have trouble interacting

and building relationships in the workplace.

• Earth Green – primarily focussed on values, relationships and maintaining harmony. The downside is that they may be reluctant to make decisions that run contrary to their values or sense of ethics.

Even from these very brief descriptions, it’s easy to see how opposing preferences can clash or come into conflict.

One person’s drive to reach a decision and achieve a task can be perceived as riding roughshod over others by someone whose focus is on maintaining harmony and finding solutions acceptable to everyone.

Using tests can be expensive as they require someone trained to administer and interpret them. The information they provide however is invaluable when recruiting or developing your employees.
