s Captain of Dunblane New Golf Club, it is my privilege to welcome you on behalf of its members and staff to our 2009 yearbook.

Professional of many years is Bobby Jamieson who offers a friendly service along with son Paul.

Our aim with this publication is to give our members, visitors and potential new members a flavour of playing this 1923 jointly designed course by James Braid and Major Hutchison which is set in beautiful Perthshire countryside next to Dunblane.

After an enjoyable game on the course, a warm welcome also awaits you at the clubhouse. There you can relax in comfortable surroundings and enjoy your favourite drink.

You can also choose to recharge the fuel cells from a choice of traditional golfers fare or why not try a meal in our popular restaurant?

The course lies on an elevated position overlooking the Forth Valley and to the Campsie Hills. Looking down the valley eastwards to the historic town of Stirling with views of Stirling Castle and beyond. Westward views take in the many peaks including Ben Lomond and Ben Ledi, plus many other parts of Argyll and Perthshire. A beautiful vista awaits you on virtually every hole.

Hopefully this yearbook will give you the flavour of our club with it’s scenic location coupled with a excellent 18 hole layout and we look forward to giving you a warm welcome soon.

D

unblane New Golf Club is ‘new’ because until 1922 golf was played on a small nine hole course adjoining the River Allan on what is now the Laighills Public Park. The original course was laid out by a Mr. Philp who owned the Hydropathic Hotel which had been built in 1878. Mr. Philp leased the ground from the Honourable Captain Drummond of Cromlix for £24 per annum and bore all the expense of laying out the course.

The Dunblane Hydropathic Club was formally opened on 2nd April 1892. A foursomes was played between two keen amateurs, Mr. Balfour and Mr. Stewart (of Stewart and Lloyds) and two well known professionals, Old Tom Morris and Ben Sayers of North Berwick. After four rounds, the amateurs won by nine and eight! According to the report in the local paper, ‘Ben Sayers played a good game but was somewhat handicapped by the unsafe play of Tom Morris, who, considering his years, played a good game’.

With the Railway Station opening, and many visitors were attracted to Dunblane to ‘take the waters’, view the local monuments and admire the scenery. Although Dunblane continued to expand, the Town Council felt the town needed the added attraction of an 18-hole golf course, and so various options were considered for expanding the existing course, but to no avail. In 1911 a

Mr. R. A. Martin of St. Paul’s Buildings, 220 Broadway, New York stepped in as a benefactor and purchased the Laighills from Cromlix Estate and transferred ownership from Cromlix Estate to the Town. He had emigrated from Dunblane thirty years previously, had prospered and wanted to do something for the good of the town.

The conditions he laid down were that the park would only ever be used for the benefit of the public and that the people of Dunblane would still have the privilege of grazing their cows on the park free of charge as they had done when he was a boy.

By 1918 the Hydropathic management declared they were no longer willing to lease or maintain the course so it was taken over by the Town Council, but both the course and the finances continued to deteriorate so much that an alternative had to be found.

In 1922 Colonel Jack Stirling of Kippendavie encouraged some local businessmen to form a committee to consider forming a golf club using the fields no longer required by his estate. A close friend of Colonel Stirling, Major Cecil Hutchison, who was an expert golfer, inspected the ground and, with some help from James Braid, the new course was laid out. Debentures of £25 were issued to cover the cost of setting up the Club (£4,267) and

Dunblane New Golf Club was registered in Edinburgh on January 5th 1923. Mr. J. C. Ross was appointed as greenkeeper at £3 10s a week, a horse, cart and harness with a roller box and two mowers were bought and play started on the ‘new’ course in April 1923.

The opening ceremony was performed by Mrs. Stirling on 7th June 1924, when as exhibition match was played by four well-known professionals — Arthur Havers, George Duncan, James Braid and Gordon Lockhart. The LONDON TIMES described the new course as ‘one of the most beautiful parks imaginable’. The SCOTSMAN said ‘the course provides plenty of variety, excellent sport and a great deal of aesthetic appeal. It ranks with the best Perthshire greens’.

and 1965 membership rose from 405 to 602 and today we have 700 Adult Members, 100 Juniors plus Honorary Life Members.

The course has been the choice for some prestigious events over the years including the Prudential, The Evening Times Foursomes, qualifying for the Scottish Championship, The Scottish Police Championship, County Championships, Junior Championship and Scottish Girls (Close) Championship, and a Pro-Am in 1977 in which forty professionals took part. D. Huish of North Berwick won with our own professional, Bobby Jamieson, coming second.

All of this is still very true almost eighty years on. An ongoing landscaping and maintenance programme has ensured the quality and appeal of the course to thousands of visitors over the years.

The course itself has seen changes. In 1943 an order was issued to plough up the outer holes (9-12) for agricultural purposes but, because of tight bookkeeping and the generosity of the proprietor in cancelling outstanding rents, the club was able to reinstate the holes which were back in play by 1948. The holes were only numbered at this time. In 1966, a competition to name the holes was won by a Mrs McAlpine who generously donated her 5gns prize to Dr Barnardo’s Homes.

Conditions for members improved dramatically after 1964 with the building of the new clubhouse. Until that time, there had been hundreds of sheep on the course, with all the attendant problems; the course flooded frequently and there were very large parties at weekends. Between 1961

The current clubhouse is the third since 1923. The first was a wooden Spieresque structure which was extremely small but had to suffice until 1947 when a black ‘tattie howkers bothy’ was bought from a farm in Braco and erected where the car park is today. It was far from luxurious — no heating, no hot water, the toilets froze frequently and there was limited catering. The stewardess at the time refused to sell crisps as she could not get the greasy fingerprints off the glasses!

The present clubhouse dates from 1964 and has been constantly upgraded creating modern, first-class facilities which are the envy of many local clubs today. The ambience and friendly atmosphere at Dunblane are legendary. We have a very active social life, ranging from Scots Evenings, Jazz Afternoons, Rotary Am-Am fundraising events, and quizzes.

am very honoured to have been invited to be Lady Captain of Dunblane New Golf club for 2009.

We have a very good and enthusiastic Ladies Section in our club. The season starts in March with our Opening Greensomes and continues throughout the season until October with lots of opportunities to win a Cup or Trophy just about every week. There are between 60 and 70 ladies playing on a Tuesday in the Medal Competitions and with four Knockout Competitions it is a busy time in April and May competing in the first rounds.

Team matches against other Clubs are great fun. The Harper Kennedy is a scratch competition, the Craigalbert is for Silver players and the Dumyat League for Bronze.

We also have a number of handicap friendly matches which are played in the evenings.

In the winter months we continue to take part in a very popular ladies 3 ball competition. Socially we have two ladies functions in the year. The one in February this year was a cooking demonstration by our resident Chef Alec Summers. In March we had our Annual Dinner and the speaker this year was Gordon Niven, Head Golf Coach at

Stirling University. Everyone enjoys these evening with 65 ladies attending each function.

The Ladies Section has been involved for several years now in looking after the younger Juniors of the club. We accompany boys and girls between 10 and 13 years old for 5 holes on a Friday evening after school for about 8 weeks before the school holidays. We refer to them as the “Mini Medallers” with up to 35 children taking part throughout these weeks. They have an ongoing competition with a proper prize giving on the last week. The ladies enjoy these evenings every bit as much as the boys and girls.

So as you can see we have great fun and camaraderie within our club.

Junior Golf Junior Golf

unblane New Golf Club has over 100 junior members and Friday medals are well populated and a number of junior players have been participating in adult competitions.

Juniors are introduced to Golf via the national junior golf programme Clubgolf and in excess of 200 children have now received initial coaching at the Club. This coaching is delivered by an enthusiastic group of members who have volunteered to be trained as level 1 coaches. The children graduate through the lessons to mini medals where they are conducted around a purpose built 5 hole course under the supervision of lady members. The ďŹ nal step is to obtain a handicap and play in medals.

Coaching then continues at regular intervals under the watchful eye of professional Paul Jamieson.

Dunblane junior teams have performed well in recent years with the scratch team winning the County Team Trophy in 2007 and only losing in the semi ďŹ nal in 2008.

The handicap team has also produced good performances in the handicap competition which they won in 2008.

Dunblane is well represented at county junior competitions and county teams regularly contain Dunblane juniors.

Bobby has been a senior professional for 35 years and is PGA qualified.

Bobby and Paul offer a friendly and professional service from a well-stocked shop.

Located beside the first tee, the shop provides booking and starter services.

A wide range of clubs, footwear and other golfing requirements is stocked, as are snacks and soft drinks.

A full repair service is also available.

Golf tuition is available for every standard of player. Nonmembers are also welcome for lessons.

Lesson packages are available from £15 per lesson.

Club Facilit Foyer Entry to the clubhouse is via an attractive foyer which houses a trophy cabinet, pictures and comfortable seating.

It is ideal as a reception area for visiting parties and guests.

Lounge The lounge is situated on the ground floor and has a bar with a range of beers, spirits, and soft drinks. It has a pleasant outlook over the first tee and eighteenth green and is available for use by members and guests. An attractive decking area overlooking the 18th green was built when the no smoking ban came into effect in 2006 and in good weather is enjoyed by all members.

Drinks, food, a wide-screen television, gaming machine, books and magazines, together with a small dance floor and a music system for club functions are available.

The lounge is often the venue for social events, especially during the winter, with jazz afternoons, quizzes, and cabarets.

Catering A full catering service is available in the clubhouse provided by AJS Elite Caterers.

Food can be served in the lounge or in an upstairs dining room that affords fine views of the golf course.

A function room is located adjacent to the upstairs dining room. It has a dance floor and a small private bar that makes it suitable for club functions and private events, at a nominal charge to members and visiting parties. This area can also be used to host conferences.

A half size snooker table is available for members in an upstairs room adjacent to the dining room.

The locker rooms for ladies and gentlemen provide pleasant facilities for changing before and after a round of golf.

Visitors’ lockers are available on application to the Professional’s Shop.

Toilets, disabled toilets and washing facilities, including showers, are located in the locker rooms.

unblane is located in the central region of Scotland, within easy distance of most major cities, including Glasgow (approximately 40 miles), Edinburgh (45 miles), and Dundee (45 miles).

The great courses of Gleneagles lie just 12 miles to the North, while St. Andrews, the Home of Golf, is approximately 50 miles away.

Dunblane lies on the main railway and motorway routes, and all of the above can be reached in less than an hour by car. A truly central position!

From the South From Stirling, follow the M9 North. At the end of the motorway, take the third exit from the Keir roundabout and follow the B8033 for about a mile, proceeding straight through the traďŹƒc lights and into the centre of Dunblane. At the Four Ways roundabout, take the fourth exit into the Golf Club car park.

Rail Information Dunblane is conveniently placed on the North-South mainline, and as such can be easily accessed from most major stations in Scotland and the rest of Britain.

unblane is situated on the edge of the new Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park and the course has superb views west towards the mountains in that area. For information about what to see and do in Dunblane and district, the website of the Dunblane Development Trust is well worth a visit.

Dunblane Cathedral The main and most prominent attraction in Dunblane itself is the hugely impressive Gothic cathedral which gives Dunblane its city status. This magnificent building with its 13th century bell tower and wonderful stained glass windows is one of Historic Scotland’s most significant buildings and is open to the public.

Leighton Library The Leighton Library is the oldest purpose built library in Scotland. It was founded by Robert Leighton (1611-84), the then Bishop of Dunblane. The library building was completed in 1688 and housed the Bishop’s own private book collection.

Cathedral Museum The Cathedral Museum, situated in the Dean’s House, unfolds much of the rich and colourful history that surrounds this ancient Burgh and its medieval Cathedral.

Each of the museum’s seven rooms focuses on a different period in the Cathedral’s history, starting with St. Blane’s early Christian community, the Reformation and the restoration of the Cathedral undertaken between 1889 and 1893.

Other Nearby Attractions There are many other attractions in the local area that are worthy of a visit. We have given a few suggestions below.

Stirling Castle This impregnable fortress, also in the care of Historic Scotland, stands high on its volcanic hilltop off to the right of the main M9 highway North. It is a particularly impressive sight at night, when its floodlit ramparts can be seen from miles around. It is well worth a visit to see its military museum and newly restored great hall.

The Wallace Monument The monument is only two miles away from the castle, across the valley, and is also floodlit at night. It commemorates the lifetime of William Wallace, the subject of the successful Braveheart movie. If you are feeling fit, the climb up the spiral stone steps to the top of the tower afford magnificent views over the Forth river valley to Stirling Castle and also the campus of the nearby University of Stirling.

Safari Park Only three miles from Stirling and six miles from Dunblane, Blairdrummond Safari Park is a great day out for all the family.

The Falkirk Wheel As the world’s first and only rotating boat lift, The Falkirk Wheel is quite simply unique and is well worth a visit.

1st Hole

Try to keep the drive on left side of fairway. This will help you avoid the bunkers and give you a more level stance for an easier approach shot to the green.

Possibly the toughest hole on the course.

Fairway kicks slightly right so again favour left side. Take one club more on approach shot as it plays longer due to the elevation.

Again this hole plays longer than the yardage. All the trouble is at the front so make sure you have enough club. It is also a two tier green so check the flag colour to identify which level the pin is on.

Difficult dog-leg left to an elevated green.

Keep drive right to avoid being blocked out by trees. Again choose club wisely as most trouble is at front of green and banking at back should catch shots that are just over and return them to the green.

Another driveable par 4 for the longer player. A risk though as missing the green leaves a tricky chip. More birdies will be made from laying up into 50-100 yard range. Fairway slopes considerably from right to left.

Classic driveable par 4. Long hitters can easily reach the green but beware of out of bounds tight left at green. Bunkers left and right protecting the green are also waiting for the errant tee shot.

Downhill tee shot. Avoid going right at all costs as thick rough will be waiting for you. Bunker on left half of fairway so long hitters must decide whether to lay up or take it on.

Par 3. Long narrow target with a banking guarding the right half. Check flag position as clubbing will vary a lot depending on position on the green.

6th Hole

Dog leg left. Good hole uphill that requires a solid drive to the right hand side of the large tree. Generous green awaits your approach.

4th Hole

Lovely par 5. Fairway slopes left to right.

Two bunkers await long drives up left side. Avoid these and you are faced with a blind shot over the hill with large bunkers guarding left side and one small bunker on right side of green.

7th Hole Tricky par 3 with trouble left and right.

Take enough club to reach elevated target and play for centre of the green. The green slopes back to front so be aware when putting.

8th Hole A superb par 4. Left side of fairway is essential to avoid kicking right into bunker. Small target so aim for centre of green to leave a makeable putt.

Downhill par 4. A good drive here sets up a birdie opportunity. Be aware that the green slopes away from you so try to avoid going through into rear bunker.

12th Hole

13th Hole A contender for toughest hole on the course along with 2nd. It is not as long but a straight tee shot is a must. The 2nd half of the hole rises to narrow, well guarded, two tier green.

Great par 3. Aim for left half of green as banking on left should help your ball back towards the green should you pull the shot slightly. Avoid missing it right as it is a really tricky pitch. Deep bunker guards the front half.

17th Hole Slight dog-leg right. Blind tee shot that requires a good drive over the hill. Shorter players may opt to aim for semi rough on right to avoid rolling down the hill which initially slopes right to left. Straight forward approach shot from a good tee shot which can yield birdies.

18th Hole Superb picturesque par 5 finishing hole which is a favourite of many members.

Straight forward tee shot but keep approach shot to the right side as it will kick left and you could get blocked out by trees on left.

14th Hole A nice short par 3 that offers respite after the previous hole. Large target area with flat surface. Avoid being short or left.
