welcome CONNECT WITH YOUR CHAMBER THE more I speak with fellow entrepreneurs, the more I realise that the chamber is even more relevant today than it ever was.

In times of plenty, levels of carelessness can creep into the way in which businesses are run. However, in tougher times, with economic growth forecasts wobbly, it is vital that businesses maximise whatever opportunities they have to ensure sustainability let alone attain growth.

With a can-do attitude, one which often demands a high degree of change in the way businesses operate, the outcome tends to be one of - the harder you work the more good breaks you seem to get.

Those who, unknowingly, choose to work in a vacuum, detach themselves from their fellow business-people, positively disadvantage themselves and their businesses to accepting whatever fate deals out to them.

Those who embrace the new economic challenges with real gusto connect into old and new networks to share all sorts of information, contacts and support one another. When you harness the wealth of experience of hundreds upon hundreds of business-people with a common purpose, it is a powerful weapon to wield against the ‘fear, uncertainty and doubt brigade’.

I recently read about an Indian gentleman who at the age of 89 ran his first marathon and has done so every year now for the past 11 years. When asked about the secret of his success, he said: “If there’s something you can’t change why worry about it? Be grateful for everything you have, stay away from negative people, stay smiling and keep running.”

What a truly fantastic lesson for us all!

The chairman of VisitScotland told Mike Haggerty that businesses must be ready for the challenges that face them in the next few years – not least as a result of the 2012 London Olympic Games and the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Despite difficult economic conditions, there are a lot of very positive things happening in Dunbartonshire.

The Kirkintilloch Canal Festival put East Dunbartonshire on the map with a visit from the BBC’s The One Show which featured it on national television. This annual event goes from strength to strength and provides a major stimulus to the local economy.

Success and growth is the name of the game at Dumbartonbased SOLAS which has just launched a groundbreaking and ambitious Utility Initiative with its affiliate organisations.

Development at Lomondgate in West Dunbartonshire is powering ahead providing construction work for local businesses and creating jobs.

The successful Dunbartonshire Business Show was a great opportunity for everyone to promote their business and network.

It is always a pleasure to attend the PSYBT Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards. Congratulations to Arlene Conroy of B-Lush beauty salon who took the top prize and to Tom Newall of Perfect Building Limited who was runner-up.

On a sad note Lex Gaston, who was a chamber stalwart and a community activist in Kirkintilloch, has died but he leaves a legacy which will not be forgotten. His obituary is on page 5.

Dr Cantlay, referring to these as ‘the winning years’, added: “We have potential and opportunity, in fact an unparalleled opportunity. We’ve got the Olympic Games in 2012, the Commonwealth Games in 2014, and the Ryder Cup in the same year.

“Above that we have the Olympic Torch Relay and the Cultural Olympiad. This is a unique combination of events and the challenge is to appreciate the scale of the opportunity and how to maximise it.

“Next year, Scotland is going to be busy. For the Olympics, the issue for Scottish tourism is displacement – England will be full and English people will want somewhere to go, while international visitors will have free time. Those international visitors won’t all stay in and around London, so that’s a real opportunity for us to show them what Scotland has to offer.”

As he talks about this optimistic outlook, he is all too aware of how tough business life is at the moment: “It has been tough for tourism” he says, “it’s been lean, but we’re resilient and we’ve held together. We’re in a position to move forward when others, such as Ireland, can’t. We’re ready to go right now while the competition is going to take some time to catch up because their tourism is in poorer shape than ours.”

He recognises the importance of Scottish tourism: “We should keep in mind that tourism is Scotland’s biggest industry, the bedrock of the Scottish economy - and around the country there is some £2bn investment in infrastructure, for example the new national stadium at the SECC. If we are to rise to the challenge, now is the time to look ahead and plan.”

Chamber Moves to Whitecrook Business Centre DUNBARTONSHIRE Chamber of Commerce has new offices at Whitecrook Business Centre in Clydebank.

The move was facilitated by new landlords Sim Property Group and generously supported by Campbell Dallas, Chartered Accountants, who provided furniture surplus to requirements after their own recent relocation to Braehead, and Robert Wilson Decorators, who repainted the whole office suite.

As well as giving the chamber a base for its administration functions, the offices are already being used by directors for monthly board meetings.

Lex Gaston Tribute THE Chamber has lost a great ally and supporter with the death of Kirkintilloch businessman Lex Gaston, aged 72, on September 20 at Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

Despite his failing health, Lex worked on behalf of the chamber almost to the end helping to promote membership.

Former chamber chief executive, John Corcoran said: “I am proud to have known Lex as a friend and mentor.

His years of experience not only in chamber matters, but of life in general, will be missed by me and many, many others.

“A true gentleman to his fingertips, he told it exactly as it was, and that is refreshing in this world we live in today.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Myra and all the family”.

At the October meeting, directors welcomed Margaret Darroch of Absolut Cupcakes to the board - she will be responsible for chamber marketing.

Lex started out in life assurance, became an estate agent, had his own house building firm and was a director with Barrett for a time. In the 1990s he launched Linden Estates with an office in Townhead, Kirkintilloch.

He was also a community activist and fought to save Stobhill Hospital from closure. He was a member of many local organisations – the Round Table, Kirkintilloch Speakers Club, and Kirkintilloch Male Voice Choir to name a few – and was an elder at St Mary’s Parish Church.

A local not-for-profit company is gearing up to help East Dunbartonshire businesses get on their bikes.

Get On Your Bike

Staff from ED’s Cycle Co-op are offering FREE cycling advice, training and maintenance sessions for businesses in Bishopbriggs, Lenzie and Kirkintilloch.

The aim of the project, which is being run in conjunction with East Dunbartonshire Council’s Healthy Habits, is to encourage more people to consider cycling to work - and make it easier for customers with bikes to do business with cycle-friendly companies.

Donald Macdonald, ED’s education officer said: “It’s clear that more people are using their bikes to travel about so we are looking to help local companies benefit from this emerging trend by capitalising on the growing number of cyclists – whether it is fitter, more enthusiastic staff or more customers.”

Golfing with Dinosaurs BEING stalked by dinosaurs sounds like a handicap but it’s a big hit with golfers at Jurassic Parrr in Clydebank.

Players have flocked to the new £500,000 18-hole adventure golf course which features animatronic – and lifelike – dinosaurs which move and shadow their every shot.

World of Golf Glasgow at Great Western Road celebrated its 10th anniversary with the opening of the fun attraction in September. More than 5000 have already played the course which is expected to become a major tourist draw.

Scotland’s premier golf centre – where 10 million balls are hit on its range every year – hopes that Jurassic Parrr will boost its continuing campaign to develop and promote golf for children in Scotland.

Over a mile of steel rods, approximately 400 tons of concrete, and countless gallons of paint were needed to complete the development which has also created employment. Direct staffing has increased from 16 to 24 while posts in the centre’s shop and restaurant will rise to 20 from 12.

“We had 350 people playing the course on the first full day we were open,” said World of Golf Glasgow general manager, Yvonne Park.

Alan Weldon, managing director of the Ecosse Group said: “The service is one of a number of niche telecoms products we supply. The Golden Jubilee recognised an issue within their patient services offering and, working along with the hospital’s IT department, Ecosse was able to design and implement a solution utilising our own telecoms network.”

Scotland’s Ski Resorts had another mega season last year with almost 300,000 visitors and are hoping for another snowy winter.

Following a record breaking 2010, exceptional snowfall in 2011 saw skiers and boarders hit the slopes in vast numbers for the second year in a row resulting in a huge boost to Scotland’s winter sports industry and related businesses.

Over the past two years it has contributed more than £66.5m to the Scottish economy with £50m of that spent off piste.

Hopes are high that this year will make it a triple and Scotland’s five resorts – Cairngorm, Glencoe, Glenshee, The Lecht and Nevis Range – are already looking forward to the first cold snap.

In 2011, Cairngorm near Aviemore opened in November while the Nevis Range at Fort William had its earliest start for 13 years. For the first time in 10 years Glencoe opened before Christmas while Glenshee and The Lecht also got off to a flying start.

Heavy snowfall and near perfect conditions for several months saw Scotland with more snow than the Austrian Alps last year.

Scotland’s resort at Cairngorm Mountain had almost double the anticipated number of skiers over both seasons.

“We expected 65,000 and ended up with 120,000 here,” explained marketing manager Colin Kirkwood, “Normally we don’t open till December but last year we started in November.

“These two excellent seasons have helped heighten the profile of Scotland as a snow sports destination. We always have people from Scotland, Ireland and the North of England but people were coming from the south travelling straight into Aviemore on the overnight sleeper.

“The quality of the snow was good and at Cairngorm we have nursery areas at the top which are easily accessible by the funicular railway.”

The white out conditions have also benefited competitive skiers according to Eddie Guest, president of the Scottish Ski Club: “The return of superb snow conditions to Scotland over the past two years have revitalised the sport immensely.

“The Scottish Ski Club has seen its membership rise by over 15 per cent and our race training groups have more than quadrupled in size resulting in young Scottish Athletes dominating at the British Championships. Canal Festival Boosts Kirky Economy

THIS year’s Kirkintilloch Canal Festival featured on national television and attracted more than 20,000 people to the town.

It also generates hundreds of thousands of pounds for the local economy with every £1 spent on the event bringing in £7.

Now in its 12th year, a week-long programme of daily activities celebrated the heritage of Kirkintilloch and the canal, and included a series of ‘Get Active’ events.

Councillor Billy Hendry, depute leader of East Dunbartonshire Council said: “We were visited by Anita Rani and Des McLean from the BBC’s The One Show who rose to a canal-based water orb challenge on live TV in celebration of the history of British canals.

“This year we pulled out all the stops to create a spectacular and memorable event spanning the entire week and I’d like to thank all those who joined us to celebrate Kirkintilloch’s heritage.”

A impressive fireworks display was accompanied by a specially composed piece of music written to commemorate the Kirkintilloch 800 celebrations on the Saturday with the ever-popular gala day bringing the curtain down for another year the following day.

Crawford McGhie, enterprise manager with East Dunbartonshire Council was delighted with the turnout: “Attendance at the festival has grown three-fold since 2006, with visitors coming from other parts of the UK and beyond. This has brought in an estimated £280,000 for the town which is a welcome boost especially in these difficult economic times.”

The Festival is council-led and delivered in partnership with British Waterways Scotland, The Forth and Clyde Canal Society, Strathclyde Police, the Seagull Trust, Cumbernauld College and other local organisations.

Prosecutions under the Bribery Act 2010 have commenced. Should business people be worried? Surely it isn’t something that affects them?

Well, actually it does, says Scott Docherty of McArthur Stanton, Solicitors.

Implementation of the act affects every business, large or small, that operates in the UK.

This does not mean you need to stop providing clients with tickets to sports events, wining and dining and so on, provided that this is proportionate for your business. Many businesses rely on such client and customer relations activities and now need to ensure what they do is lawful in terms of the act.

The act introduces offences of giving, promising or offering a bribe as well as agreeing to accept a bribe and, perhaps more tellingly, of failing to prevent bribery by persons working on behalf of a business. It increases the maximum penalty for bribery from seven to 10 years imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine.

There is a defence to a charge of bribery if a business had adequate procedures in place to prevent it happening. To rely on this, businesses must have regard to six principles outlined by the Ministry of Justice.

These are – proportionality, top level commitment, risk assessment, due diligence, communication, and monitoring and review.

With business harder than ever these days, the focus is on keeping customers and maintaining margin. So often, little attention is paid to VAT until the quarterly return is due. But at a time when cash is in short supply, businesses should look at their VAT accounting a bit more carefully.

Take service companies, for example. They issue invoices to their customers as soon as possible but nowadays payment is frequently slow; the business may have to account for VAT on the issued invoice before they get paid by the customer so is out of pocket initially. If the service is a continuous supply, they could issue a request for payment or a statement instead of an invoice. They would only then account for VAT when they get paid, and would issue the invoice after payment. This sounds like a lot of work but, if it saves much needed cash going out

And what about VAT bad debt relief? If your customers haven't paid the sales invoice within six months the VAT can be reclaimed from HMRC. You don't even have to formally write off the debt. Provided you meet a few simple conditions the VAT is yours to claim.

Most businesses don't have in-house VAT expertise. My role is to help businesses meet their legal requirements but also to help identify those steps which stop VAT being an unnecessary cost.

SOLAS Scotland unveiled a pioneering social enterprise employment scheme to MSPs at the Scottish Parliament in October.

The Solas Utility Initiative (SUI) will help drive down energy costs for community-based organisations whilst creating meaningful employment and training opportunities for people who are disabled, disadvantaged or injured ex-service personnel.

The initiative involves Utility Aid Limited, the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations, SSE (formerly Scottish and Southern Energy plc) and others.

Utility Aid piloted the scheme, which has already helped a number of people return to full-time employment, for more than three years.

Dumbarton-based Solas is a community business set up to fight fuel poverty and create sustainable jobs and training opportunities.

The latest addition to its portfolio steps this up a gear, dealing with the difficulties faced by recipients of incapacity benefit when looking for work, as well as tackling high energy costs and the need to reduce carbon emissions.

Under the scheme, Solas will train people to identify and address energy waste and inefficiency. Funding has already been secured through commercial service level agreements that the SUI has with some of the UK’s leading energy providers.

Graham McLennan, managing director of Solas Scotland explained: “SUI brings together and levers the vast experience of Solas and Utility Aid, which also has its Scottish base in Dumbarton, presenting a genuinely joined up approach to energy saving in Scotland."

Stephen Morgon, managing director of Utility Aid added: “It is a rare thing indeed to find an organisation such as

Solas, which combines the benefits of saving money, helping reduce carbon emissions and creating sustainable, long-term employment with reinvesting profits for the common good. I am proud and delighted that Utility Aid has been selected to be part of what is truly a unique energy adventure.”

SOLAS SUCCESSES IN addition to the roll out of the new SUI scheme, Solas has notched up some impressive business successes.

It has secured a multi-million pound home insulation contract with Argyll Community Housing Association and will also deliver free home insulation to private householders in Inverclyde and North Ayrshire through the Scottish Government’s Universal Home Insulation Scheme.

In East and West Dunbartonshire, it has been engaged to provide free home energy advice and advocacy to private householders under the same government initiative.

In addition, Solas has diversified into providing a wider range of products and services to the national marketplace, including renewable energy, solid wall and blown bead cavity wall insulation, plus electricity, gas and water saving technologies.

It has also invested heavily in staff training and development, launched a new website and established a unique customer charter called ‘The Solas Way’.

THE Lomondgate development will create more jobs than were lost when the J&B bottling plant closed.

Aggreko’s state-of-the-art factory and offices have been completed and will soon be occupied. The new manufacturing facility will become operational in stages over the coming winter and spring boosting employment at the site.

Scotland’s first Costa Coffee drivethrough should be up and running in Dumbarton by Christmas with jobs for a further 20 people.

It will have indoor and outside seating for around 100 and open daily from 5.30am to 9.30pm. It is due to be handed over by the developer to Costa in November.

Local Businesses Benefit THERE have been spin-offs from the Lomondgate development for local businesses.

Archibald MacAulay, one of the oldest structural engineering companies in Scotland, secured the £45,000 steel contract for the new Costa drive-through.

Harry MacAulay, director of the family business which is based in Bankend Road, Dumbarton, said, “Of course, it’s always terrific to win business but it’s an added touch to be part of such a large development on your doorstep, especially when we’ve been part of this community for over 70 years.”

Another West Dunbartonshire company - Clydebank based glaziers, AGS - was awarded the glazing contract for the building.

David Hastings, chief executive of Strathleven Regeneration, added: “When Costa Coffee opens to the public it will generate a real buzz locally as well as creating 20 new jobs. It’s a real bonus that West Dunbartonshire businesses are involved in the construction process.”

It’s just one of several key development milestones reached at the £100 million Lomondgate development.

With blue chip anchors BBC Scotland and Aggreko already on site, partners Strathleven Regeneration and Walker Group are now focusing on development of the business park.

Agents, Cushman & Wakefield, have been appointed to promote it as a business location. A landmark sculpture by public artist Andy Scott will help put the development on the map and entrance features will soon be constructed.

The Best Road in Britain The results show that Brits don’t just like a smooth drive, they like to really experience and feel the road.

MOTORING enthusiast and celebrity chef, James Martin and the boffins at Mobil 1 oil reckon the A82 from Glasgow to Fort William is the best road in Britain.

James drove 1800 miles across Britain in a specially adapted car and experienced some phenomenal drives through scenery he didn’t even realise we had in this country.

This is the same road that the AA named the UK’s most dangerous in 2002. The Scottish Government has already spent £3 million in the last year on upgrading and road safety measures with further major improvements in the pipeline.

“The results show that Brits don’t just like a smooth drive, they like to really experience and feel the road. The A82 was a truly outstanding road that I encourage everyone to drive; the road was raw and real, and in this case the vibration and noise made it feel like a real drive.

The scenic route was crowned number one last year after a study investigated road conditions and their physiological effects on drivers.

Using research data captured by state-of-the-art technology, a team from Mobil 1, the world's leading synthetic motor oil firm, developed an equation to measure roads already shortlisted by the public to determine their rankings.

A Stunning Drive With Dramatic Scenery The A82 is a favourite with car drivers and motorcyclists who enjoy a challenge and dramatic scenery, writes June Hyslop.

As you approach Glencoe, the hills close in around you adding to the gloomy grandeur of the site of the 1692 Glencoe Massacre.

In good weather it can be frustrating on the Glasgow to Balloch and Luss sections with heavy traffic.

Tucked away from view, just off the A82, is the National Trust for Scotland’s multi-award winning Glencoe Visitor Centre which explores the landscape, wildlife and history of the area.

Driving is also difficult along the narrow, twisty stretch from Tarbet to Inverarnan which has been single file traffic light controlled for many years at an area known as Pulpit Rock. However, this has been earmarked for realignment to re-introduce two way traffic and improve safety and there are also plans for a Crianlarich bypass.

The road does get better after Ardlui but it’s after Crianlarich as you head towards Tyndrum that it really comes into its own as a stunning scenic drive.

From Onich, it’s not far to the Corran Ferry terminal and from there a relatively short drive hugging the side of Loch Linnhe into Fort William.

Tyndrum is a good place for a break at the famous Green Welly Stop with its restaurant, home baking, selection of shops and the chance to fuel up.

Sometime in November, there are plans to close the A82 north of the Corran Ferry for a long weekend to remove an unstable rock above the road.This will mean a 35 mile detour via the ferry and a narrow and mostly single track road - the A861 - to reach Fort William so check before travelling.

It’s an easy run from there to Bridge of Orchy, on past Loch Ba on the right towards the bleak exposed openness of Rannoch Moor where crosswinds can buffet the unwary even on a sunny day.

Leaving Glencoe, drivers have the choice of a detour round Loch Leven and the hidden village of Kinlochleven at its head or can take the shorter route across the Ballachullish Bridge.

Business Show Success

THREE hundred people flocked to the Dunbartonshire Business Show making it a success which the organisers now hope to use as a springboard to generate more opportunities for commerce.

More than 50 business and agency exhibitors, including Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce, set up their stalls at the Beardmore Hotel and Conference Centre at the end of September.

The event was organised by West Dunbartonshire Council’s (WDC) economic development team in partnership with their East Dunbartonshire and Argyll and Bute counterparts, with support from the chamber of commerce.

The aim was to create networking and trading opportunities for local businesses and so far feedback has been very positive with attendees reporting that they made useful contacts.

VISITORS have flocked to the spectacular new Riverside Museum in Glasgow since it opened in June.

More than 500,000 people passed through its doors in its first two months with staff welcoming an average of more than 10,000 a day meaning it is already on track to exceed all pre-opening predictions of its popularity.

Its predecessor, the former Glasgow Museum of Transport, was always a well-loved attraction and it looks as if its new home will notch up more than three million visitors in its first year.

Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “The Riverside Museum has been a huge hit since the day it opened to the public.

“We knew just how much visitors loved the Museum of Transport at Kelvin Hall but even so, the reaction to the Riverside Museum has been phenomenal.

“The feedback from people has been overwhelmingly positive and we are already seeing visitors returning time and again to enjoy Glasgow’s latest attraction.”

Numbers Exceed Expectations

World Class Design The £74 million world-class zinc and glass structure was designed by award-winning architect Zaha Hadid. The result is a striking modern building with an undulating exterior profile. Inside there are no columns to allow maximum visibility and use of space.

There are twice as many items on display as before and visitors have more opportunity to interact with the exhibits.

Highlights at the museum include, a wall of cars, a hanging bicycle velodrome, a massive South African locomotive, a No 9 tank engine, a motorbike deck and a recreation of the Rest and Be Thankful road in Argyll.

Visitors can walk down three re-created historic streets, visit an Italian café, a bar, a 1960s garage, various shops and subway stations. They can board two subway cars, three trams, four locomotive footplates, a train carriage and a bus.

Using around 3000 objects from across the city’s collection, archive film and photographs, plus personal experiences and memories, the museum reveals stories of Glasgow’s great achievements and technological breakthroughs.

The museum has Robbie Coltrane’s Chrysler Jeep, Graeme Obree’s home-made record-breaking bicycles, Danny MacAskill’s You Tube sensation stunt bike, Franz Ferdinand singer Alex Kapranos’s Lambretta and climber Dave MacLeod’s gravity-defying boots to name but a few.

Ordinary people feature too, including paramedics, tram drivers, mums, schoolchildren, café owners, clippies, firefighters, skateboarders, dancers, refugees and teenagers.

Access, particularly for wheelchair-users and children, has been improved and entry is still free.

The museum is at 100 Pointhouse Place, Glasgow G3 8RS a short walk from Partick interchange. However, the closest subway is Govan, then a brief ferry crossing to the site. A dedicated bus service (No 100) also runs from George Square in Glasgow city centre. There is parking on site for cars and bikes.

Clyde-Built On Display The Tall Ship Glenlee is moored in front of the museum’s stunning south façade, bringing her together, for the very first time, with the city’s ship model collection.

Glasgow’s ship model collection is unrivalled, and many of the world’s most famous vessels were Clyde-built like the Comet, Lusitania, , the Hood, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, QE2 and, of course, the Waverley.

Dunbartonshire’s Top Young Entrepreneurs PSYBT AWARDS: Runner-up Tom Newall of Perfect Building Ltd with regional winner Arlene Conroy of B-Lush.

B-LUSH beauty salon owner Arlene Conroy is Dunbartonshire’s top young entrepreneur.

The 27-year-old was announced as regional winner at the 2011 Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust (PSYBT) Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards.

Arlene whose salon is in Old Kilpatrick won a £1000 cash prize and now goes forward for a chance to win the coveted national title of Young Entrepreneur of the Year and an additional £2000.

B-Lush specialises in treating problem skin conditions offering bespoke treatments for everything from acne to pigmentation and ageing.

Runner-up was Tom Newall (25), founder of Perfect Building Limited based in Milngavie, East Dunbartonshire who received £500.

Tom started his first business in 2007 while still at university but was forced to close it two years later. Determined to learn from his mistakes, he sought a loan from PSYBT to purchase equipment, tools and materials in 2010 to start Perfect Building Ltd which handles property maintenance, structural repairs, light civil engineering and project management.

Both received financial backing, advice and support from PSYBT, which during the last 22 years, has helped more than 12,000 young people start over 10,000 businesses providing £36.4million in funding and additional assistance.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, PSYBT regional manager, Sharita Padaruth said: “It is a huge challenge whatever your age to decide to set up your own business and we feel privileged to be able to provide people with the

funding and advice required to realise their self employment ambitions.”

Provost Eric Gotts of East Dunbartonshire Council added: “These awards give recognition to the talented, ambitious young entrepreneurs that are helping our local communities to flourish and prosper, and we are delighted to be able to provide our support and encouragement.”

The regional awards also recognised aftercare advisor, Ron Montgomery, who was named Dunbartonshire’s regional Volunteer of the Year. He now has a chance of winning the national Volunteer of the Year award in November. www.psybt.org.uk

Martin Wishart Loch Lomond Gains Michelin Star WEST Dunbartonshire has its first Michelin restaurant with Martin Wishart Loch Lomond gaining one star in the new edition of the top eating out guide.

A spokesperson for the restaurant, which is based at Cameron House Hotel, said: “We can’t thank Stewart Boyles, head chef, Miguel Rivero, our restaurant manager, and all the team enough for their continuous efforts to achieve high standards of food and excellent service.

Lomond establishments. There are a further four in Edinburgh while the remainder range from Dumfries and Galloway in the south to Fort William and Lochinver in the north, with Ayrshire, Fife and Skye all represented.

Kinloch Lodge on the Sleat Peninsula in Skye is the only one on an island – and is also home to Lady Claire and Lord Godfrey Macdonald of Macdonald, High Chief of Clan Donald.

Andrew Fairlie’s eponymous restaurant at Gleneagles is still the only one with two Michelin stars and to date there is still no starred establishment at all in Glasgow despite its many eating places.

Stravaigin in the city’s West End has, however, just been awarded a Bib Gourmand. These are given to restaurants serving good food at moderate prices bringing the Scottish total to five.

That said, there are a number of honourable mentions in the guide for Glasgow including favourites like the city centre’s art deco Rogano, famed for its seafood, authentic Italian La Parmigiana and the Merchant City’s Babbity Bowster pub and restaurant.

“This is a great addition for Scotland, once again Martin is thrilled to raise the reputation of Scottish cuisine.”

Reflecting the city’s love of curry, Dhabba and Dakhin in Candleriggs are complimented on the authenticity of their Indian cooking.

“Scotland offers a wealth of good eateries and the standard is high. It is famed for wonderful ingredients and we are seeing a rise in the standards of chefs’ use of the products.

“Those places chosen for the Michelin guide are a good cross-section of style and price from a simple gastropub to a luxury restaurant.

Chivas Double Your Money Fundraising

GENEROUS Chivas Brothers employees have had their charity efforts boosted by £16,500 in the last year thanks to the company double your money policy.

Employees from across the company’s 31 sites – including three in Dunbartonshire – took part in a wide variety of fundraising activities during the last financial year, including marathons and races, organising charity evenings, a sponsored swim and skydiving.

Company policy means that any employee can apply to have their fundraising efforts matched by up to £500 each year.

They have raised more than £23,300 for good causes, which meant a grand total of almost £40,000 for various national and local charities.
