WELCOME TO THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW

We’re launching our 64th season at Dallas Theater Center with one of the most beloved cult classic musicals of all time. The Rocky Horror Show premiered in London in 1973 and ran to wildly enthusiastic audiences until 1980.

But that was just the beginning. From Sydney to Paris, from Brazil to Japan, and from LA to Broadway, The Rocky Horror Show has inspired new generations of fans each time it is performed. The 1975 film version is still in limited release today, 48 years after its premiere. In 2005 it was selected for preservation by the Library of Congress in the National Film Registry as being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.”

When we selected The Rocky Horror Show for our season, we were focused on its high energy music, opportunities for audience participation, and the fun of producing it at Halloween. We wanted to do a show that would spark humor and joy, and maybe inspire some audience members to dress up as characters in the show.

Then SB12 happened.

In the spring the Texas legislature passed a law that makes it both a criminal and civil offense for artists to pretend to engage in a wide variety of sexual activities on stage or wear costumes that exaggerate various body parts. Though intended to stop drag queens from performing in public, the law was written in a way that also prevents anyone under 18 from seeing theatrical productions that the government determines appeals to a “prurient interest.” (The dictionary definition of “prurient” is “having or encouraging an excessive interest in sexual matters.”) Even if accompanied by a parent who expressly allows their child to attend, the government will decide if the dangers of drag or sexualized content portrayed on stage is too great to allow parents (much less the teenagers themselves) to decide what is appropriate.

To put this in further context, movies are regulated by the Motion Picture Association of America (not the government). Movie theaters generally refuse to allow anyone under the age of 17 admittance to an “R” rated movie, unless accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. So a parent could bring a 17 year old to see the movie, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, but would be prevented by law from bringing them to a stage production of the same material.

With regard to The Rocky Horror Show, this is doubly ironic. Many adults of multiple generations can remember a moment in their teenage years when they snuck out of the house to see a midnight showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show at a movie theater. I must confess that I did so when I was a junior in high school. I told my parents I was staying overnight at a friend’s house and omitted telling them that we were out throwing rice at a campy film long after midnight.

I certainly hope that none of you are offended by this production, which attempts to celebrate the myriad ways in which each of us express our identities. Though we may have very different expressions of our gender or sexuality, we also share so much in common. The power of camaraderie. The joy of a silly laugh. The cathartic release of dancing, yelling, sweating and throwing your full self into a rock and roll experience. The moment of seeing a character on stage – even a comic character in a sci-fi, horror spoof – and finding a spark of recognition within oneself. The moment of realizing that the spark does not need to lead to shame. The moment of realizing that you’re still embraced as part of the singing, dancing crowd, because of your uniqueness, not despite it.

At the risk of putting entirely too much weight on a glam rock musical comedy, this is what I love about The Rocky Horror Show. This is what I love about theater. This is what I love about being alive at a moment in time when each of us can freely choose how to express ourselves. This is one of the many things I love about America, though it is also one of the things that many others fear and seek to stomp out through intimidation.

But fear and intimidation will not win. We’re here tonight. We’re ready to share a theatrical experience. We’re in a space where all are welcome.

So, tonight, let’s stand up for each other. Let’s do the time warp again.

DALLAS THEATER CENTER EQUITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION STATEMENT

ALL ARE WELCOME! At Dallas Theater Center, we want to be the best place to work and see theater, and to be a positive and transformational force in Dallas and beyond. We stand-up for equity, diversity, and inclusion across our company and community. As a leading national theater, we recognize that building an equitable, diverse, and inclusive environment is central to our relevance and sustainability in the community we serve and love.

DALLAS THEATER CENTER LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We acknowledge the land beneath our feet as the ancestral home of many Indigenous Peoples including the Caddo, Wichita, Tawakoni, and Kiikaapoi, as well as the tribes that may have lived here and roamed the area – including Comanche, Kiowa and Apache –and those indigenous people whose names we don’t know anymore.

We honor, revere and respect those who were stewards of this land long before we made it our home. We also acknowledge the neighborhood we inhabit as one of the original Freedman’s towns of Dallas built by those who were enslaved by European colonization.

Please help us to maintain a safe and inclusive space while you are with us. DTC has a zero-tolerance policy towards harassment in any form including the use of racist, sexual or ethnic slurs - be it verbal, physical, or virtual. If you need assistance or witness an instance of harassment, please notify the House Manager immediately.

Welcome, humans. As you gather for this extraordinary journey into the outrageous world of The Rocky Horror Show, I’m excited to share some basic operating provocations that might help you enjoy the experience a bit more.

• Embrace the Cheesy Charm: Get ready to let loose and embrace the deliciously cheesy humor of this production. Believe it or not, when I was hired to direct, I was a Rocky Horror Show virgin - I had never seen, heard, or been part of a production of this show before. So, in many ways, we’re all in this adventure together, exploring this cult classic with fresh eyes and excitement.

BLAKE HACKLER

• Push Your Boundaries: Rocky Horror has always been about pushing boundaries, particularly in the realm of sexuality and identity. We want everyone to feel comfortable and respected here. So, as we explore these themes, let’s do so with an open heart and mind. This is a space where you can be yourself without judgment.

• Participate Dammit!!!! This is not your typical theater experience. We encourage you to be part of the show! Shout those famous lines, throw props (soft ones, please,) and let your voice be heard. Your energy and participation make each performance unique and unforgettable. At The Rocky Horror Show, you’re as much a part of the magic as the cast, and my own initiation into this world adds an extra layer of excitement.

• Build Community: The Rocky Horror Show reminds us of the power of building a community that accepts and celebrates all. In the spirit of the show, we’re creating a safe and welcoming space where we can be ourselves, let our freak flags fly, and revel in the joy of being together. Theater, at its core, is a model for how a group of people can come together and simply be with each other, transcending differences and finding common ground through art and shared experiences. So say HEY to your neighbor, share some props, guide the less experienced Rocky goers…make some community out there!

• The Stupider, The Better: One of our guiding principles has been that sometimes, the stupider the better. We’ve embraced the absurd and the outrageous because we believe that theater should be a place where we can let our wildest imaginations run wild. So tonight, don’t be afraid to be as stupid as possible.

• What Would Shirley Bassey Do? In moments of uncertainty, we’ve asked ourselves, “What would Shirley Bassey do?” It’s a reminder to bring more glamour, more extravagance, and more show-stopping energy into every moment. And if you don’t know who Shirley Bassey is… then I don’t know what to tell you.

• Have Fun: Ultimately, The Rocky Horror Show is all about having a blast! It’s a celebration of joy, individuality, and selfexpression. So, kick back, enjoy the ride, and let your inner Rocky Horror fanatic shine.

With excitement and gratitude,

In 2009, with the generous support of Diane and Hal Brierley, Artistic Director Kevin Moriarty reinstated Dallas Theater Center’s resident acting company. His intent was to develop and nurture professional actors within the North Texas community and enable them to make Dallas their artistic home. At the same time, he sought to enhance Dallas Theater Center’s artistic profile and create ongoing collaborative relationships. The ten-member Diane and Hal Brierley Resident Acting Company has since become a signature component of Dallas Theater Center’s presence in the Dallas Arts District.
