From the President’s Desk NEW HI-TECH HEARING AID

Greetings, By the time you read this edition of The Tower, the recipients of the Couple of the Year and Person of the Year awards will have been announced, and I want once again to congratulate the winners. Although there are many people who deserve recognition for all they do in the community, I believe everyone will agree that we have made good choices. It is difficult to imagine that anyone in Del Tura has not had the pleasure of meeting Kevin and Louise Wilcox. To give you an overview, I can tell you that Kevin is currently a member of the HOA Board, devoting more hours than I can count on Board business; handles the loan closet; and helped build this year’s stage set for the Del Tura Repertory Company. Louise is Chair of the Nominating Committee, and with no public credit at all, helps Kevin set up for Tuesday morning Coffee. Together, they always work the pancake breakfasts, ice cream socials, holiday decorating, and whatever else might need extra hands. And, together and individually, they not only support nearly every single event Del Tura offers, but they also, completely without fanfare and often even before being asked, offer their assistance to any community resident who has a need, large or small. If such a thing existed, I’d nominate them as Couple of the Century. Fewer of you may have had the pleasure of meeting Jacqueline Keen personally, but you’ve seen her work in the Del Tura Repertory Company plays and in the Holiday pageants. I did a little adding. By the time this year’s play has been presented, Jackie will have spent more than 400 hours reading plays and making a selection; casting; rehearsing; designing, painting, and decorating the set; working with sound and lighting technicians; and coaxing the best possible performances out of actors who come to her with various levels of experience. Add in the hours spent

on the same items for holiday program—which she also writes, and the number is staggering. Furthermore, she does this every year. People like Kevin and Louise and Jacqueline make this community a truly exceptional place to live. Members of the HOA Board installed at the Annual Meeting to serve three-year terms (20142017) are Kandice Chadwell, Desi Pedersen, and Kevin Wilcox. Also by the time you read this, you will have heard that the HOA Board has begun looking into acquiring information about what would be needed if Hometown America were to decide to sell Del Tura and residents were to open a discussion about purchasing the community. Please let me make this clear to everyone: we have absolutely no reason to think such a sale will occur within the near or far future; in fact, such a sale is un-

likely. We are making this inquiry solely on the basis of our belief that a community should always be prepared. A very significant part of being prepared for this possibility, or for any other situation that might require a quick response from the community as a whole, is the ability to reach our residents. If you are in residence for only part of the year, please make certain that the HOA has your e-mail address or alternate address and phone number. Because of privacy issues, Hometown America will not share this information; consequently, you must be proactive in providing it to us. You have my word that we will never use this information for anything other than notifying you of a crucial community issue. Best regards to you all,

Donna Burns Phillips

Contractor Surveys

4/14

Our HOA sponsored Portrait of a Bride held in our clubhouse on January 23, 2014 was a resounding success. Attended by about 150 women, the display of wedding gowns from the 1800’s to present day in the beautifully decorated clubhouse was a magnificent sight. Lee Ann Brown, a bridal historian, told the stories of the women who wore the gowns and the background of each. A harpist played for the audience and as each women entered the ballroom she was accompanied to her table by a tuxedo clad escort. There was also a 50-50 and Chinese auction prior to a delicious catered lunch and tea. The reason for the huge success of this program was the superb team that put the program together, decorated the clubhouse and cleaned up. The following team members did a great job:

Co-chair Lynne Mack : Publicity and programs. Jean and David Thompson and Stephanie Norris were responsible for the wonderfully decorated ballroom, with help from all the team members. I also want to thank the following: Dianne Conlon, and her merry band of table setters. Donna Moore, Ann Ekas and Leslie Gregory. Ticket sales went smoothly, run by Sylvia Miller and Bonnie Sharpless. The 50-50 was the responsibility of Kim Manuel, Audrey Martin and Molly Walker. The Chinese auction was run by Diana Camp, Julia Guffey and Ruth Ann Lugten. I would like to thank the handsome gentlemen for escorting the ladies to their seats. I would also like to thank Helene Glasson and Kevin Wilcox for going out of their way to be helpful during this time. A great big thank you to my entire committee for being there

By Dennis Cottini I personally want to thank each of you who so diligently complete a Contractor Survey form after experiencing either excellent or not so excellent service from a contractor. This is the only way a Del Tura resident can determine a prospective contractor’s credentials and I really appreciate your candor. Both the survey results and forms are available in the HOA office and also are accessible on line at www.deltura-hoa.com. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this information, please call me @ 217-0592. Thank you for reading this article.

the discretion of the Event Committee. The process will be revisited in the next few months. See you at the March dance with the Del Prados and the Back Home Again show with Tom Becker. The first day of ticket sales is always for HOA members only. Renters are able to join the HOA as associate members. If you are not an HOA member, join today. It is a very reasonable $12.00 per year. Contact Doris Meyer, membership chairperson, for details. There is a long-standing “tradition” of going very early in the morning to procure a favorite table. Some people really enjoy the challenge. Not an early riser myself, it does not appeal to me, but to each his own. I hear comments that there must be a better way. If you have one, please let me or any Board member know. We will be glad to discuss it with you.

I am thrilled that our Valentine’s Day dance with Brylcream and The Atlantic City Boys show both sold out on the first day of sales! It may mean several things: we are getting information to you better or we are offering the kind of entertainment you like. I think the combined use of The Tower, our posters; the new electronic sign and the website have helped a great deal. Of course, the Tuesday Coffees provide another option for announcements and a great opportunity for socialization as well. During this past month, I have had many questions about the rules for buying tickets for various events held in Del Tura. Since we have many new residents and our seasonal owners and renters are all here now, I think this is a great time to address just what the rules are. The source of this information is the Del Tura HOA, Inc., Policy and Procedures which were approved April 10, 2012, and are the latest version. First Day of Tickets Sales: • Tickets will be sold to HOA members only. Member must show membership card prior to purchase. (We now use the list of current members provided by the Membership Chairperson). • One person may bring four (4) HOA cards and purchase eight (8)

tickets maximum for events using cabaret seating. • Each household may purchase two (2) additional tickets for overnight guests. • Tickets may be sold prior to the beginning of coffee at 9:00 a.m. Sales may resume after Coffee and continue for a length of time to be determined by the Entertainment Committee. • Cast of a show, at the discretion of the producer, may buy (1) ticket per person before regular ticket sales begin on day two. (This comment addresses Del Tura plays only). Day Two of Ticket Sales and thereafter: • Ticket sales will be open to all residents. • A maximum of eight (8) tickets or tickets for one entire table may be purchased per person. • Tickets may be sold at any time, except during coffee hour, at

ANNA WILSON 305 San Remo Lane Anna Wilson is a tiny little gal with a huge heart with more spunk and energy than most anyone I know. When Anna smiles, her eyes brighten and her warmth of soul engulfs those in her presence. She has a knack for making others feel welcome and beckons, one and all, to join with her in the many activities and events in the Del Tura community. Anna raised her three children in her home in Connecticut, where one of her two sons still lives with his family. She was pleased to say that, just before I arrived to interview her on a Sunday afternoon, she had been talking with her other son who lives in Las Vegas. She is thankful her daughter lives here in Florida and they talk every day by phone and see each other often. Anna likes reading technical stuff and historical books. She taught school when her children got older and loved teaching fifth and sixth graders, awakening their love for books and learning. Anna seems to delight in talking about her husband John. She leaned forward in her chair to tell me about him and how they met and were married in June of 1991 in Anna’s church in Connecticut. John lived in Sun Seekers near Del Tura and they began to look for a home together and discovered Del Tura and bought and moved into their first home on Santa Clara in December 1991.

Anna jumped in with both feet and became active in varied activities and shouldering responsibility in many of them. John attended the coffee hours with her and they enjoyed all the shows and special events together for years. John and Anna moved to their BIG home on San Remo Lane in 1998. They reveled in the spaciousness of their home, a four- wide, being the largest home in Del Tura. John having his own spaces for his hobbies (including HAM Radio with many radios) and Anna her office. Anna’s face beamed as she talked of John’s brilliance, being a member of Mensa and highly accomplished in his field. Anna’s voice softened as she tenderly related about their special relationship. He was so gentle and kind, always helping neighbors and others. She stood up (to her full 4 feet 8 inches) and said, “we never had an argument---but enjoyed robust intelligent conversation.” She went on to say that, “John was the technician and I was the problem solver.” The love of her life left her in January of 2012 after several months of ill health. Anna, being a worker bee, served on the HOA Board for years, as secretary. She has helped to organize a variety of bowling leagues, and

as winners of one of the senior leagues, the team has traveled, to El Paso, Oklahoma and Reno and other parts of the USA. Anna still bowls twice a week. She helps lead the Women’s Billiard weekly group and is now active in the Good Timers single’s club, and is serving as secretary of the group. Anna has loved being on the tennis team until recently, playing around the county, her team often winning. Anna, for nearly twenty years, chaired the distribution of The Tower team, and has just recently released this responsibility to another. Anna is 91 years young and still actively involved in a rich life. She looked so cute in her decorated golf cart in the Christmas parade. If you enjoy the Coffee Hour you will have often seen Anna in skits and happily fulfilling responsibilities. She has been an avid BINGO participant, calling out and calling back the numbers. She relishes the opportunity to serve and enhances life for all of us here in the Del Tura family. Anna is truly a fascinating gal, a splendid neighbor and faithful friend!

Reflections

DEL TURA

Childhood Winters in New England Remember those Nor’easters, and the blizzards that seemed to last for days! It’s hard to imagine the stark realities of those winters we spent as children, especially now that we are living here in Paradise. Winters were filled spending special times with our siblings and friends; romping in the snow, sledding, ice skating, building snowmen-or snow families, and how about those snowball fights? So much fun! We never tired, or complained of being cold! Ahhh….those January times of our youth! The storms seemed to last for days-drifts were higher than the windows and the roofs of our homes. Anxiously we would wait for the go ahead sign from our parents. Bundled up to our ears –it’s a wonder we could bend over at all! My brothers and I would waddle, or race each other out the door. Who would be the first to land into the newly fallen snow as a snow angel? Those were important decisions to make. That was our world then….So much fun! Building a snowperson (very important to stay politically correct these days) was a very important decision. First we needed to see if the snow was worthy of such a task. Then there was the decision of who would be responsible for the head, mid-section, or the bottom? Don’t forget the branches for the arms and buttons for the eyes and mouth. A carrot for the nose, and of course, no snowman would be complete without the finishing touches of the scarf, top hat, etc.? BIG DECISIONS! Later in the day we would venture up the hill with our sleds to the schoolyard. Below the schoolyard were three separate hills, perfect for sledding! The streets that surrounded those hills were closed off by the city with

wooden horses and fire bomb torches. We sledded for hourssome of us on our sleds, toboggans, coasters, and even homemade sleds made out of cardboard boxes. There was a strong sense of security and safety back then. A strong feeling of go ahead have fun –be kids…play, laugh, don’t worry about tomorrow. Just have fun and make beautiful childhood memories. And we did! Those were truly the child centered times of our lives! Ice skating was another activity that we certainly enjoyed throughout those winter months. Our community firemen would flood the ponds at each of the local parks as soon as the temperatures dropped. The snow began to wear down but the temperatures would always stay well below freezing. We were so lucky to have a pond complete with a warming house about a half mile from our home. I remember running home from school, my brothers and I would hurry to get our chores done, and then we’d grab

our skates and head for the pond. There within that warming house we were greeted by a roaring fire- always welcoming and glowing, with wooden benches for us to enjoy a steaming cup of hot chocolate –and don’t forget those marshmallows! Before you know it we were out on the ice again, whipping around and around until we were dizzy! I don’t think any of us could ever come close to a Sonja Henie, or a Dick Buttonbut we tried. For some reason we couldn’t even resemble graceful…but we certainly had fun! As Snowbirds and year round residents, we can all agree that the seasons up north were very well marked and felt by all of us. Outside of calendar reminders, being here during the winter months, there are a few times that we actually feel a significant change from fall to winter. The memories of our youth and holiday visits remind us of those days that we spent as children…….Thank God for the Memories!

2014 Health Fair Update

By Mary White Del Tura’s 2014 fair was a large success with 40 participants from all practices. Evaluations were done for vision, hearing, memory screenings and massages. Information was given by physical therapy, heart health/stroke, hospice, grief counseling, sleep disorders, urology, pulmonary, life line, asthma/COPD and so much more. We were represented with alternative medicines such as acupuncture and Reiki. Diabetic supplies and natural vitamins were also represented. Examinations were done by dermatology and podiatry and Parish nurses. A couple of our residents were found to have major

health issues that they knew nothing about. One was admitted to the hospital. A simple exam may have saved a life. And it was FREE. Our four legged family members were represented by a veterinarian. Discounted chipping, nail clipping and questions were answered. Our residents gave blood and our ladies signed up for their mammograms with the MOBILE MAMMO for 3/6/14. We have already confirmed over 20 participants for next year. We hope our 2015 Health and Wellness Expo will be bigger and better. Thank you to all who came by and took charge of their own health.

The Save Our Strays 1st Annual Cat’s Pajamas Fundraising event was a resounding success. One hundred and twenty-five people attended with many dressed in their best pajamas or cat costume. a) A peach b) Bee’s knees c) Cat’s pajamas. You’re d) All of the above. Thanks for your bigheartedness. The SOS Committee’s budget is now healthier by some $700.00. The baked potatoes were hot and steamy, the basics, mushrooms, onions, beef and so on scrumptious. People said they had a fantastic time, it was different from the yearly events. Our MC Rod Harder kept the program moving along by providing some cat trivia. After the meal we ended the evening with the 50/50 Draw and the Silent Action drawing. You’re a spark plug for good. Thanks for igniting something amazing. Amazed. Inspired. Grateful. That’s how your generosity makes us feel. We want to thank the following for their donation to the Silent Auction: Russ and Robyn Geren, Neff Studio Salon and All Souls Thrift Store. You’re what making a difference looks like. A HUGE thankyou to the following for helping before, during and after the event. Our Decoration Team: Barbara

Blanton, Jeannie Cornwell and Dot Brown. Bob Mihok thank-you for cutting out the cat forms. Buzz Rouillard - you rule – the shredded beef was out of this world. Our Greeters: Patty Pologa and Dianna Basile. 50/50 Sellers: Fred Brueggmann and Rich Brennan. Carolyn Brueggmann, Jacqueline St. John, Jim Brown and Jeannie Cornwell for helping set up. Sandy Dorval thank-you for making the Chili and helping with the dishes. Thank you also to Paula Linde for all your work in the kitchen. David Jacobs and Fred Hall for setting up the sound system. Bill and Joan Harris: Is there no limit to your awesomeness? Thank you for showing us how it’s done – the kitchen clean up and the garbage. To the SOS Committee members Two words: Endless Gratitude: Russ and Robyn Geren, Leah Walsh and Dot Brown. We learned a lot and will be making some changes to the event in 2015. By Geoff Tibbals Submitted by Marjorie Fisher This is a spoof concerning the older generation made captive to the bewilderment of modern technology. The facets of utter frustration are untold as they scramble to relate. References include a quagmire of technical gobbley-gook which only a teenager can understand. The book is staged in England, but the World Wide Web makes the anguish apply globally. The gamut goes from trying to install a message on a not too reliable answering machine to changing the time on a digital clock. To mention just a few of the au-

thor’s thirty subjects which confuse the older generation, include texting, remembering our security codes, call centers to India, high tech TV sets, finding a salesperson in a big box store, mobile phones and computers that come with no instruction manual, and of course, the societal concerns for crime. We are, in essence, made to believe that those things that worked so well and served our needs are no longer acceptable. These unknown forces insist we must change. The author’s comical approach is a relief from this intimidating era where we find ourselves. He tells of the senior advising the

bank she will be depositing a million dollars having told she is a lucky winner in a scam email. He reminds that “English as we know it”, no longer applies as exampled by dead is now described as “living impaired”, or homeless are “residentially flexible”, if we are to be politically correct. Couple this with the “What are they”, Bluetooth, Blackberry and WiFi, which further compound our isolation and frustration. We are no longer able to grow old, leaning back with acquired wisdom, to share with the younger generation. Instead we are “The new kid on the block”, at their mercy as we try to keep up.

“Though miles may be between us, we are never far apart; Friendship doesn’t count miles; it’s measured by the heart.” Richard Beck We will keep this quote in mind when our long-time friend Louise Dodge moves to

Good Timers Singles News

Spring Hill this month. Louise has lived in Del Tura for many years. She has acted in Del Tura Repertory Company productions, served as treasurer of the HOA, been on the Entertainment Committee, sang in the Choralaires, attended bingo often, and has served as a member and treasurer of the Good Timers. These are just some of the activities she has enjoyed at Del Tura. Louise is always there in times of need; she is loyal, caring, and has a great sense of humor. In other words, she is a wonderful friend. We will miss her and wish her the best of everything always. We welcomed new member Jackie Procopio at the February meeting at which we missed Gloria Ellis, Anna Wilson, and Anna Gessner. We wish them speedy recoveries. We also welcomed back vice-president

Mary Lou Pudlo, and “cousin” Millie Ciccarelli. Lorna Callan, who has been an officer of the Good Timers in the past, chaired many committees and hosted many birthday parties, etc., has agreed to take over the Treasurer’s position which will be vacant when Louise Dodge moves. We are sure you will continue to do a great job, as always, Lorna. Joan Whaley agreed to take over as Sunshine chairperson. A big thank you goes to Gloria Ellis who had handled this assignment for several years. Over 40 members attended the Sweets Party held after our February meeting in remembrance of our past-president Lorraine Greiner. Those present indulged in a wide variety of tasty treats. This was an early Valentine’s Day celebration of friendship and love. The February birthday din-

ner was held at our own Fountain Grille. Nick prepared a duplicate of what he serves every Wednesday at the Italian buffet. Everyone had their own favorites, among the many dishes. The mussels and eggplant Parmesan seem to be the favorites. Mangia, one and all! The March birthday dinner will be held at Houlihans in Marinatown hosted by colleens Alice Harris and Peg McTernan. We will wish Happy Birthday and Erin Go Bragh to Deb Alt, Lyn Bailey, Pat Clemens, Lisa Nusbaum, Fran Pouliot, Kathleen Quigley, Barbara Simmons, and Bev Krueger. The date of the dinner will be posted on the bulletin board in the lower level of the clubhouse across from the pub and announced at the March 4 meeting. Bring on the green beer! The Olympics have come and gone, but there is still time

to come to the Good Timers Road Rally on April 10. Esther Kuntz and Pat Gilmour have agreed to again serve as chairpersons and plan a fun golf-cart scavenger hunt. Attend the March 4 meeting at the clubhouse for all the details. If you are a member and cannot attend but would like to participate or request additional information, contact either Esther at 7312128 or Pat at 731-9561. ...and they’re off!!! Reminder to members - Save Saturday May 2 for our Annual Kentucky Derby Party. Details to follow. Many Good Timers members were fortunate to call Connie Carter our friend. She serves as an inspiration to us and leaves us with wonderful memories. We send our love and sympathy to Stewart, Joann, and Paul. The memory of her smile warms our hearts.

“I have had other a/c companies come to my home, but your technician Bob was by far the most honest and very prompt. After servicing my unit, it seems to work 100% better. He did a YHU\ WKRURXJK MRE , ZRXOG GH¿QLWHO\ FDOO \RXU company for future service needs and / or a new unit.

“It is nice working with people who do what they say they are going to do. It is also nice to see you carry an excellent credit rating. This makes us feel good and not used. When you are a snowbird, this makes a difference. Thank you.”

“If I am home or away from home, I can trust this company. They will evaluate the issues and propose solutions. The products and service are excellent. This is the second unit I have purchased from Custom Cooling because of the honesty and integrity of George Ellsworth, Jr. and his employees. 5/14

By Carol Marra No one needs to remind you how very cold and, at times, rainy January was. Having spent 5 days in Rochester, New York in January, it was refreshing to return to Florida even when the temperatures here were only in the 60s. As my husband Steve scrapped our car every time we got in and out of it, and we shivered until the heater started working, Florida felt warm and welcoming upon our return. Unfortunately, because of our weather we had to cancel games on two Thursdays. Hopefully, February will be kinder. We had a shamble on February 6, the Valentine’s Tournament on February 13, and then took a Thursday off, (the 20th), while the Men had their Club Championship. We finished the month with a game that included only the even holes at half handicap. March 6 our Member-Guest will take place. The theme is “Spring Fling”. Sign up in the Dungeon. See Louise Bowers or Kay Rolader if you have any questions or wish to help. The Hometown America Invitational was February 10, and was an opportunity to play in groups of five. This event included lunch as well as a golf cart for a hole-in-one! There was also an ABCD on Saturday February 22. If you did not get a chance to play in it there will be another ABCD

on March 29. Also coming up, is the Susan G. Komen Rally for the Cure on March 15. You can create a team of 6; all men, all women or mixed and have fun while supporting an important cause. Many prizes will be awarded. there will also be a continental breakfast during registration and lunch afterwards. On January 15 eleven of us went to Pine Lakes for LEGA. LEGA is handicapped and flighted. It also includes lunch and a chance to meet with other golfers from many of the area clubs. The following players won at Pine Lakes: Paula LaFreniere, Penny Mikesh, Ann DeGrande, Marty Riley and Carol Marra. The next LEGA event is at Maple Leaf in Port Charlotte on March 4. Contact Liz Flanagan at 543-1640 if you are interested in joining our Association. It is possible to be a year round member or an Associate Member if you are only here for a few months. Liz can explain your options. So, you are about to hit a very tough shot from under a palm tree after a rain shower. You actually have to kneel, so to save your new pants from possibly getting muddy, you throw a towel down and kneel on it. Great shot, almost to the green. Guess what? Two shot penalty because you improved your lie. Golf, you’ve got to love it!

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS

By Rita Immoor January always swings into full season and so did the weather across the country. Here in Florida we escaped most of its wrath but cold and rain did cause us to cancel two of our play days, thankfully, not tournament or social events. As you read this our invitational on February 27 will have been the huge success it always is. Check next month for an update. January 9: We played pick a hole to eliminate A flight: Tie between Molly Brown and Millie Hanrahan B flight: Nancy Woods C flight: Three-way tie between Trudy Olds, Sue Symes and Gail Ventura On January 15 and 16 we had our Club Championship and the results were: Club Champion: Mary Ann Wuerdeman Flight 1 First Place: Nancy Moyer

Second Place: Joan Massey Third Place: Kay Martin Flight 2 First place: Barb Jones Second Place: Molly Brown Third Place: Justine Fitzgibbons Flight 3 First Place: Trudy Olds Second Place: Marcia Hinchberger Third Place: Pat Alley January 23 and 30: Our next two weeks were cancelled due to extreme weather conditions for Florida though the rest of the country suffered thru far worse conditions! On February 5 we had our annual Valentine Scramble, which was followed by an enhanced cocktail gathering at Pat Alley’s home. There was plenty of fantastic food and if anyone left with space for another bite, it was his or her loss! Thank you Pat for your hospitality! The Golf results were: West

By Jay Flanagan The Del Tura Amigos will be wrapping up the regular season schedule with games on March 3 against Pine Lakes, March 5 against Buccaneer, March 10 versus Tara Woods, meeting Heritage on March 12, and ending the season on March 17 against Lake Fairways. The league double elimination tournament will begin on Wednesday, March 19 with the championship game on March 31. At press time, the team had a 9 win 1 loss record and had a three game winning streak after their only loss of the season to Lake Fairways. Lake Fairways continues to lead the pack with 10 straight wins. The team has played excellent defense throughout the season with particularly strong infield play from Rick Bourquin, Jim

Hamilton, Jerry Beiermann, Joe Angelilli, Rob Friguelli and Dave Denman. The pitching of Tom Walsh and Rick Manual has been most consistent helping the team to their record. The team offense has been impressive all season with the team batting average of .543. Leading the team in hitting is Don Vadeboncouer with a gaudy .731. Beiermann is not far behind at .708. Six others including Rick Antaya (.600), Denman (.625), Hamilton (.655), Mike Scott (.652), Manuel (.625) and Walsh at .643. Bourquin leads the team in runs batted in with 17 and Antaya is right behind at 16. Crowds have been good so far in the season but the team is hoping for big turnouts as the games come to a close for 2014. Remember it is just right (Taylor), right (Airport) and left (Florida) to get to the complex.

1st place: Nancy and Bob Moyer and Shirley and Richard Williams. 2nd place: Gail and Vincent Gulino and Carolyn and Bill Tewksbury tied with Peggy and Ted Thevenet and Gay and Gary Luders. 3rd place: Marie and Steve Buco and Linda and Rocco Guerrieri tied with Jean Wiley and Ray Hahn and Marcia Hinchberger and Dick Bach. South 1st place: Joan and Bob Massey and Rita and Bill Immoor. 2nd place: Mary Ann and Dick Wuerdeman and Cookie and Chuck Feiner. 3rd place: Barb Jones and James Greenwood and Justine and Mike Fitzgibbons tied with Molly Brown and Gary Perkins and Nan Walsh and Tony Oliver. February 6, we played a Scramble on North and the winning team was Maryann Denman, MaryKay Tointon, Pat DiNitto and Linda Guerrieri. In addition to regular announcements at the weekly tournament play, members are reminded to regularly review published announcements on our Bulletin Board to obtain specifics for all planned events. New members are always welcome to join the Nine-Hole Women’s Golf Association at any time during the year. Don’t hesitate to contact Marlene DeGraaf at 599-4404 for more information.

Friday Shuffleboard League

By Jack Blevons We had a nice, warm day today for week 13 of shuffleboard. It’s so much more fun when we can play in shorts and tee shirts instead of long pants, jackets, hats and gloves! Today we had to play 4 games because last week we got rained out and we will play 4 games for the following 2 weeks to make up those games. So we play our regular three games and one of the games that were rained out. Hopefully, we won’t get rained out now until we get those games made up. We would rather do that than not get the games played. After today’s games the standings are as follows. The “A” flight leaders are Jack/Janet (Reinen) Blevons in 1st place at 31/6, followed by Ben Hargraves/Bob Crawford at 29/8 and in 3rd place are Glenn and Mary Kay Tointon at 23/14. The “B” flight leaders are Dave and Nancy Denny at 29/8, followed by Chuck and Marcella Carothers at 20/17 and in 3rd place is the team of Mollie Brown/Ellen Slusarski at 19/18. The race remains close with 5 weeks left to play as our regular season ends on March 14. On March 21 we have our 8-Team Tournament in which the top 4 finishers of both flights will play for the 3 Tournament trophies. Then, our league’s 10th Annual Bust-Up Party follows that on March 28, which is held in the

Royal Palm Ballroom in the Clubhouse. I want to remind all our members to be sure to mark the date on your calendars for the party, as along with awarding the 18 trophies and good food, the camaraderie that is shared by everyone to end the season is the best part of all. In the past these parties are usually attended by almost everyone in our league and I also want to remind all the people who sub for us, you are also invited to come along with your spouses or significant others. The cost is only $5.00 a person and all the food and soda is provided and it’s BYOB. No one ever goes away hungry. We will have a sign-up sheet posted on the Shuffleboard Shack every Friday starting in March. We need everyone to sign up so Janet and I will know how much food to prepare. Hopefully everyone will attend.

ed into two flights vying for this championship. Along with the tourney, other activities that are going to take place are Friday night’s get together that includes a para-mutual, a Ladies scramble on Saturday morning and an Awards Dinner on Saturday night. The end of February completed a very busy month for the men. The Club Championship took place on February 12, 19 and 20 with Jerry Beiermann trying to defend his victory in the championship flight and Dan Haag, Tom Zeigler, Bob Garabedian and Robert Smith hoping to continue their good play as 2013 flight champions. Saving Is Good...

BUT IT’S NOT INVESTING

It’s a good thing to have some savings. When you put the money in a low-risk account, you can be pretty sure it will be readily available when you need it. Nonetheless, “saving” is not “investing” — and knowing the difference could pay off for you far into the future. Think about it this way: Saving is for today, while investing is for tomorrow. You need your savings to pay for your daily expenses, such as groceries, and your monthly bills — mortgage, utilities, and so on. In fact, you might even want your savings to include an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses to pay for unexpected costs, such as a new furnace or a major car repair. These are all “here and now” expenses — and you could use your savings to pay for them. But in thinking of your long-term goals, such as college for your children and a comfortable retirement for yourself, most individuals typically can’t simply rely on their savings — they’ll need to invest. Why? Because, quite simply, investments can grow — and you will need this growth potential to help achieve your objectives. To illustrate the difference between saving and investing, let’s do a quick comparison. Suppose you put $200 per month into a savings account that paid hypothetical 3% interest (which is actually higher than the rates typically being paid today). After 30 years, you would have accumulated about $106,000, assuming you were in the 25% federal tax bracket. Now, suppose you put that same $200 per month in a tax-deferred investment that hypothetically earned 7% a year. At the end of 30 years, you would end up with about $243,000. (Keep in mind that you would have to pay taxes on withdrawals. Hypotheticals do not include any transaction costs or fees.) This enormous disparity between the amounts accumulated in the two accounts clearly shows the difference between “saving” and “investing.” Still, you might be thinking that investing is risky, while savings accounts carry much less risk. And it is certainly true that investing does involve risks — investments can lose value, and there’s no guarantee that losses will be recovered. Nonetheless, if you put all your money in savings, you’re actually incurring an even bigger risk — the risk of not achieving your financial goals. In fact, a low-rate savings account might not even keep up with inflation, which means that, over time, you will lose purchasing power. Ultimately, the question isn’t whether you should save or invest — you need to do both. But you do need to decide how much of your financial resources to devote toward savings and how much toward investments. By paying close attention to your cash flow, you should be able to get a good idea of the best savings and investment mix for your particular situation. For example, if you find yourself constantly dipping into your long-term investments to pay for short-term needs, you probably don’t have enough money in savings. On the other hand, if you consistently find yourself with large sums in your savings account even after you’ve paid all your bills, you might be “sitting” on too much cash — which means you should consider moving some of this money into investments with growth potential.

Saving and investing — that’s a winning combination. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.
