DETROIT SOCIETY OF WOMEN PAINTERS & SCULPTORS SEPTEMBER, 2016

VOL. 16

NO. 9

Message from the President: I expect everyone has taken advantage of all the great light and long hours during the summer months to create fine artworks and will have great stuff for the upcoming DSWPS shows and Open Calls. Can’t wait to see. The following are our exclusive DSWPS opportunities to show and sell: !  Crooked Tree Art Center, Petoskey, will show our works from the Anton Show from September 17 to November 19, 2016. If you cannot take your work up to Petoskey by September 11, you can drop it off at the Scarab Club (Farnsworth & John R, Detroit, across from DIA) Saturday, Sept. 10 from 10 am to noon. Please have the labeled artwork packaged between labeled cardboard or labeled bubble-wrap. Julie Sabit and I will be there to assist and load up for transport. !  The new Loft Fine Art Gallery on Market Place in Mt Clemens has offered DSWPS an exhibit/gallery space this October 2016. This will be a One-Stop-Process at the LOFT on Saturday, October 1. Starting at 10 a.m. to noon, forms and fees will be processed. Jurying will begin at noon. Afterward, declined pieces are to be removed. Accepted works will remain for hanging. The theme is to be recent work. The exhibit will be up October 8-31. Of course, Deb Benedic will take the lead on this exhibit for us. Reception will be Saturday October 8, 3 pm to 5 pm. NOTE: There will be no call for entry forms for this show in the newsletter. The entire process will be completed Saturday, October 1, 2016. If you can’t make that day, you can ask another member to deliver your work, pay, and fill out forms for you. Entry fee will be the usual $30 for up to 2 pieces of art. A diptych is considered two pieces. No digital, prints or photo art. Deb Benedic can answer your questions: deborah.benedic62@gmail.com. !  We have an extended exhibit opportunity at MOCAD (Museum of Contemporary Art of Detroit) in the Mike Kelly Homestead Gallery. It will open February 3 and run to April 30, 2017. Member Tracy Irwin and 2nd VP Deb Benedic are currently getting more details of the opportunities for DSWPS and the requirements of MOCAD. They will need help from our members. This is a great opportunity to raise our profile in the Detroit Fine Art Community. Secretary Carolyn Sherwood is already preparing activities for children (it's never too early to get folks excited about art). Keep in mind that the garage, (attached to the gallery) can be used by a member as a working studio (& sales) during the 3 months. More information is forthcoming at our September 22nd General Meeting. !  Starkweather in Romeo has asked us to show there in October 2017. We will need 1 or 2 members to lead this exhibit process.
