A MESSAGE FROM HRC’S PRESIDENT Dear Friends, Today, our movement for full equality faces new and enormous challenges on many fronts -- a crucial Presidential election in November; an onslaught of anti-LGBTQ legislation in cities and states across the nation; an epidemic of hate violence; and growing threats to LGBTQ people at home and abroad. Now -- more than ever -- we are fighting for the equal rights and fundamental dignity that all LGBTQ people deserve.

And thanks to you, the Human Rights Campaign is leading the way forward.

HRC is at the forefront of the fight in Congress for the Equality Act -- historic federal legislation that would finally end the unacceptable patchwork of non-discrimination laws across this country that threaten the livelihoods of LGBTQ Americans.

Many of the same couples who fought long and hard to have their marriages recognized remain vulnerable due to inadequate protections in their home states. This is fundamentally unacceptable, and we must change it.

But we’re not just fighting for our rights, we’re also fighting to protect our rights. As our opponents work to pass state legislation targeting LGBTQ people, we’re working to defeat hateful bills in states across this country that seek to write discrimination into the law and undermine our hard-won progress.

We’re mobilizing and organizing the LGBTQ electorate in this country like never before to make sure Hillary Clinton succeeds President Obama as our next champion in the Oval Office. Not only does she have the record and the vision to lead -- she will ensure that Donald Trump never gets the chance to roll back all the gains we have made. Trump has threatened every major piece of progress we’ve made under President Obama, from marriage equality to executive orders. He has even vowed to sign legislation enabling taxpayer-funded discrimination in all 50 states and to allow states to pass their own shameful bills. We simply can’t let his campaign, built on the spread of ignorance and fear toward LGBTQ people and so many others, succeed in November. HRC is also expanding the frontiers of our fight for equality through programs like Project One America, which is moving equality forward in the Deep South. Our work through HRC Global is also helping to build partnerships with our allies abroad to strengthen the global equality movement.

We’re also expanding the groundbreaking work of the HRC Foundation -- which educates and helps build better, more inclusive communities for LGBTQ people in workplaces, classrooms, hospitals and churches -- everywhere from the town hall to the corporate board room.

Most of all, we’re working to break down the walls of hate and discrimination that continue to hold us back, and put too many as risk. The tragedy in Orlando has reminded us we can’t afford to let up in our fight to stamp out hate everywhere it persists.

As a society, we must hold accountable lawmakers, religious leaders, and other public officials who put a target on the backs of LGBTQ people through hateful rhetoric and shameful legislation, because they are complicit in the violence fueled by their words and actions. And today, the safety of the LGBTQ community also depends on our ability to end an epidemic of gun violence that has spiraled out of control.

Ultimately, the hatred that motivated this attack in Orlando is the same hatred that killed Matthew Shepard. It is the same hatred behind the killings at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, the murders of three Muslim students in Chapel Hill, and the massacre at a Sikh Temple in Wisconsin. And it is this hate we must work to defeat each and every day. Because we, as LGBTQ people, are Muslim and Jewish, we are black, white and Latinx, we are immigrants and women and people living with disabilities. Our community is as diverse as the fabric of our nation.

And we have all come too far and fought too hard to allow hatred to drag us backwards.

In the months and years ahead, we must continue to work together and build on our historic progress. By telling our stories and living openly as our authentic selves, we have shown that we have the ability to not only change hearts and minds, but also the course of history. We’ve proven before that love wins, and we will do so again.

This past year has been one of major victories, but also one of major setbacks and heartbreaks. Now is the time to celebrate our victories and now is the time to work as a community through the challenges that still face us. This past year more than ever, we saw the strength and resilience of the LGBTQ community and its allies and together we know that now is the time to make change. We will continue to strive for that change each and every day moving forward, and we know we can count on you to be right there with us.

Tonight, we are honored to present Rob Reeg, President of MasterCard Operations and Technology, with our Ally for Equality Award for his vigorous leadership in the fight to defeat SJR39 and prevent hate from being written into the state constitution of Missouri. Alexandra Billings will be receiving our HRC Visibility Award for her continued visibility on screen, including her role on the multi-award winning television series, “Transparent”. We are thrilled to welcome Mary Beth Maxwell, Senior Vice President for Programs, Research and Training at HRC, who will provide important updates on HRC’s programmatic work. Finally, American Idol finalist and singer, songwriter, actress and model, Syesha Mercado, will close out the night to get us ready for a vibrant After Party!

This evening would not be possible without the help and support of not only the LGBTQ community, but those among you who identify as our straight allies – with your persistent advocacy, you are helping us change the hearts and minds of the nation as we continue to fight for equality.

Also, we’d like to express our sincere gratitude to our local HRC Steering Committee and our team of Dinner Party volunteers. AWARD RECIPIENTS Visibility Award- Alexandra Billings Alexandra Billings is an actress, singer, author, teacher and activist.

Alexandra stars as “Davina” in Amazon’s multi-award winning television series “Transparent.” The series has won awards from AFI, American Cinema Editors, Critics Choice, DGA, GLAAD, Gay and Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association, Golden Globes, Satellite Awards, and WGA. On television, Ms. Billings played “Donna” in the ABC film “Romy and Michelle: A New Beginning,” one of the first times a transgender actress played a transgender character in the history of television. She has guest starred on “How to Get Away with Murder,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “E.R.,” and the pilot “Nurses” opposite Lynn Redgrave. She stars in the upcoming feature film “Valley of Bones” opposite Autumn Reeser and Rhys Corio.

Alexandra has been acting since 1968 and has performed across the United States in hundreds of plays and musicals. Her latest autobiographical performance “S/HE and Me” was performed at Cal State Long Beach. She’s played everyone from “Mama Rose” in “Gypsy” to “Mrs. Lynde” in “A Doll House.” Most every state role is considered to be a first for a transgender actress.

Her one-woman autobiographical show “Before I Disappear” toured from Chicago to Boston to Los Angeles, and was performed off-Broadway at The Producer’s Club, winning rave reviews and running for over ten years.

She is the recipient of five After Dark Awards and a Joseph Jefferson Award.

Ms. Billings’ activism stretches across the continent. This year, she moderated a panel during Transgender Awareness Month at the White House. She has won the TPA Award, the Rainbow Spirit Award, and was inducted into the Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame in Chicago. Living with AIDS since the mid-eighties, Alexandra chronicles her life’s journey in her blog “Stilettos and Sneakers,” and is a regular contributor to The Huffington Post. Her life story “From Schoolboy to Showgirl: the Alexandra Billings Story” for PBS television was nominated for an Emmy for Best Documentary.

Alexandra married her high school sweetheart Chrisanne Blankenship-Billings in 1996 in a ceremony held at the Bailwick Theater in Chicago. The couple was legally married in 2009.

Alex received her MFA from Cal State Long Beach and is an Associate Professor of theater at the university. She is a Viewpoints Associate at The Steppenwolf Theater and has taught in schools across the country.

Ally for Equality Award Recipient- Rob Reeg Rob Reeg is president of Mastercard Operations & Technology (O&T). In this role, Mr. Reeg oversees the processing platforms, global network, customer support and software development for technology operations at Mastercard. Under his leadership, the Mastercard network processes billions of transactions each year.

Based in St. Louis, Missouri, he also serves as a member of Mastercard’s Management Committee and reports directly to the CEO, Ajay Banga.

Prior to joining Mastercard, Mr. Reeg held IT and business leadership positions with Sprint Corp., Cleveland Pneumatic, Totco Inc., and Conoco Inc. Mr. Reeg serves on the executive committee for Junior Achievement, University of Missouri-St. Louis Leadership Council, Washington University’s Wells Fargo Advisors Center for Finance and Accounting Research, the board of St. Luke’s Hospital and the board of directors for Webster University.

Mr. Reeg received a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern Oklahoma State University. Also, he served as a captain in the United States Army Reserve for eight years.

Syesha Raquel Mercado An American singer, songwriter, actress and model. Mercado was the third place finalist on the seventh season of American Idol.

Prior to Idol, Mercado was on The One: Making a Music Star and she won Florida Super Singer.

On June 25, 2009, it was officially confirmed that Mercado landed the lead role of Deena Jones in the United States national tour of Dreamgirls that also opened internationally in Japan.[2] The tour began at the Apollo Theater on November 7, 2009.

SPECIAL GUEST- Mary Beth Maxwell A longtime leader in social justice movements, Mary Beth (M.B.) Maxwell leads the groundbreaking and innovative efforts of HRC’s educational arm, the HRC Foundation.

She oversees the organization’s public education and programmatic initiatives covering a wide range of issues affecting LGBT people in the United States and around the globe.

Her portfolio includes the programs focused on the workplace, children and youth, LGBT families, health and aging, HIV and AIDS, religion and faith, and LGBT issues abroad.

Maxwell previously served in the Obama Administration as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy at the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) where she was a key figure in shaping the Administration’s policy agenda for working families, including raising the minimum wage, expanding paid leave, ensuring labor standards for home care workers, and advocating for collective bargaining rights and workers’ voice in the workplace. She played a lead role in the Administration’s many accomplishments for LGBT workers.

Prior to joining the Obama Administration, Maxwell was the Founding Executive Director of American Rights at Work, a leading voice for modernizing and reforming our nation’s labor laws. She has also served in various other senior-level positions at Jobs with Justice, NARAL Pro-Choice America, and the United States Student Association. She lives in Washington, D.C., with her 15-year-old son.

WHAT WE DO The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer equality. Since 1980, we have been fighting for a better future for LGBTQ Americans. Today, we’re facing our biggest challenges yet. After a series of historic victories for LGBTQ people, this country remains divided into two Americas: one America increasingly equal, the other still lacking the most basic measures of equality, including full state and federal protections. With a grassroots force of more than 1.5 million members and supporters nationwide, HRC is working every day for full federal equality for LGBTQ Americans, uniting this country under a single banner of fairness.

ANTI-LGBT LEGISLATION Earlier this year, legislative challenges to LGBTQ equality emerged in more than 30 states. These included so-called “religious freedom” bills aimed at permitting discrimination based on personal religious beliefs and legislation that puts transgender and gender-nonconforming people at risk. In 2016, HRC worked to battle back more than 200 negative pieces of legislation aimed at harming the LGBTQ community, and is committed to aggressively fighting these threats to equality from those who seek to undermine our hard-earned victories. And we’re leading the opposition to similar measures in Congress.

FULL FEDERAL EQUALITY

A FIRM FOUNDATION Over the past two decades, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation has helped lead a quiet revolution in this country. The Corporate Equality Index has transformed how employers embrace LGBTQ employees — and helped corporate America become one of equality’s greatest champions. The Healthcare Equality Index has dramatically expanded the number of healthcare facilities that guarantee top-notch care for LGBTQ patients. Our Welcoming Schools trainings have cultivated more inclusive classrooms for tens of thousands of students. And our Religion & Faith Program has opened hearts, minds, and entire congregations to LGBTQ people and families. Today, we’re committed to reaching millions more.

HRC is leading the charge for the Equality Act, a federal non-discrimination bill that would ensure that LGBTQ Americans have explicit protections in employment, housing, public services and spaces, and other important areas of their daily lives.

The time has come for this nation’s laws to catch up to the values of its people. No transgender person should worry about being evicted from their apartment simply because of who they are. No gay person should fear being fired simply for marrying the person that they love.

While we are in an unprecedented time of visibility for transgender Americans, harassment, discrimination and violence persist. HRC works to educate the public, increase awareness and provide a range of resources on challenges facing the transgender community. From our work in corporate America bringing transgenderinclusive health care policies to millions of employees, to our expanding efforts supporting transgender youth and their parents, teachers and healthcare providers, HRC is working to eliminate barriers such as the crisis of anti-transgender violence facing transgender people in their lives each and every day.

ELECTING A PRO-EQUALITY PRESIDENT In January, the Human Rights Campaign endorsed Secretary Hillary Clinton for president. Since then, our grassroots army of 1.5 million people have been working to educate the public about what’s at stake, get out the vote and elect a champion for LGBTQ equality. And we’ve tracked and researched our opposition, who have stood up time and time again against equality.

MARRIAGE In 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed — at long last — that every American has a fundamental right to marry the person they love, no matter who they are or where they happen to live. The Court’s decision was decades in the making, and HRC is proud to have helped build momentum for marriage equality by changing hearts and minds, securing legislative and ballot measure wins, engaging businesses and faith communities, and electing pro-equality candidates. And we’re continuing to work to ensure the decision is fully implemented everywhere.

ENGAGING THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION HRC is working closely with the Obama administration to expand LGBTQ equality by instituting much-needed policy changes that will not require congressional action. HRC has made significant progress towards ending the outdated policy banning transgender people from serving in our nation’s military, while continuing to ensure that federal hate crimes protections are fully enforced. HRC is pushing to eliminate discrimination in our healthcare system, fighting to ensure that LGBTQ students are safe and supported in schools, and working to prohibit any program receiving federal funding from being able to discriminate against LGBTQ people.

EQUALITY AT THE CITY AND STATE LEVEL By working at the grassroots level with advocacy groups and fair-minded lawmakers, we are working toward equality in every town, in every state. HRC’s field and legal teams closely monitor state and municipal legislation and provide strategy, technical and financial support, and staff to elected officials and our coalition partners throughout the country, ensuring our commitment to equality on the ground level. Entering its fourth year, our Municipal Equality Index (MEI) has helped cities and towns from the heartland to the coasts enact laws, ordinances and policies that improve the lives of LGBTQ people. In addition, this year we premiered our State Equality Index (SEI) to provide a roadmap for states in enacting full legal equality.

In 2014, HRC launched Project One America — an unprecedented, $8.5 million campaign to advance equality in the Deep South. Through permanent campaigns in Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas, Project One America is bringing HRC’s work to more LGBTQ people and allies than ever before. With more than a dozen full-time staff and dedicated offices in each of the three states, this is an all-out grassroots campaign at a decisive moment in this movement.

In 2011, then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton declared before the United Nations in Geneva that “LGBT rights are human rights.” That same year, President Obama told the nation that the “struggle to end discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons is a global challenge, and one that is central to the United States’ commitment to promoting human rights.” These fundamental truths are the core principles of HRC Global, a major effort to strengthen the global equality movement and counter American extremists attempting to export anti-LGBTQ laws and sentiments around the world. As dangerous new anti-LGBTQ laws emerge across the globe from Russia to Nigeria, HRC Global is fighting to call out American organizations that export hate abroad and ensure that American foreign policy protects the human rights of LGBTQ people — strengthening the global equality movement through partnerships and fellowships with LGBTQ organizations and advocates around the world.

FAIR-MINDED REPRESENTATION HRC’s Political Action Committee has been among the National Journal’s toprated PACs in the past, with more than 85 percent of our endorsees winning their elections. Since 1980, we have helped elect fair-minded candidates across the country, ensuring that the voice of equality is heard in statehouses and on Capitol Hill. HRC provides a range of support, including staff time, messaging development, fundraising and volunteers.

HIV AND AIDS With new advocacy, treatment options and preventative measures revolutionizing the conversation around HIV/AIDS, HRC continues to fight for a robust national response to HIV and AIDS, which still disproportionately affects the LGBTQ community. HRC is proud to help tackle stigma and to lobby for the full funding of critical prevention, treatment and research programs including PrEP grounded in sound science, not narrow ideology. In the last year alone, we’ve reached more than 5.5 million people delivering new resources and important messages around HIV prevention, care and treatment.

IN THE COMMUNITY HRC is committed to making sure that our outreach efforts reflect the diversity of our movement and the communities where we work and live. Through diverse programs — such as the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Program and our Welcoming Schools program — we are working to provide LGBTQ people of color and allies with tools and support to better address the challenges they face at the intersections of racial and anti-LGBTQ discrimination. We also partner with organizations that work specifically with people of color to educate the public on the heightened disparities faced by LGBTQ people of color. And as we continue our efforts on HIV/AIDS, we are producing educational resources in both English and Spanish, and elevating the voices of LGBTQ people of color, who continue to be disproportionately affected.
