As the Charlotte Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated celebrates 75 years of service to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community, it is my esteemed pleasure to welcome you to our 53rd Debutante Cotillion! We appreciate your support of our beautiful Debutantes who certainly epitomize this year’s theme “Diamond Reflections of a Cultivated Treasure”.

Debutantes….Take your stroll with grace and pride! Tonight as you make your entrance into womanhood, we congratulate and thank you for your dedication and commitment to our Cotillion program. You have spent many hours preparing for your debut to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community and we hope that your experiences will be memorable as you move into the next phase of your lives. The Charlotte Alumnae Chapter is proud of you and we wish you well in all of your future endeavors.

A special thank you is extended to the parents of our Debutantes, Marshals, as well as other relatives and friends. This night would not have been a success without your support, commitment and participation. Thank you Deb parents and guardians, for sharing your daughters with us during their most memorable senior year.

Delta Sigma Theta is a non-profit organization and because of the generous support of our sponsors and patrons, our chapter is able to continue to provide scholarships for the Debutantes. In addition, your generosity allows us to provide charitable contributions to local agencies and organizations that support Delta Sigma Theta’s Five Point Programmatic Thrust: Educational Development, Economic Development, Physical and Mental Health, International Awareness and Involvement, and Political Awareness and Involvement. Greetings, It is our pleasure to welcome you, the families, marshals, guests, donors, and members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. to “Diamonds of a Cultivated Treasure”, our 53rd Annual Cotillion.

We have had the pleasure to work with 34 lovely young ladies and experience them blossoming into beautiful debutantes. Parents, we Thank You for allowing us, as well as the members of our chapter, the pleasure of meeting, working with, and providing a positive impact. The opportunity to watch them enjoy the wonderful experience of being a debutante through fellowship, activities, and community service was as rewarding for us as well as it was for the debutantes. Because of your hard work, dedication, patience, and financial support, the Cotillion has been a success.

Today, we say, Debutantes, job well done! You have spent countless hours preparing for this day. Your dedication, commitment, perseverance, and intelligence have been important factors to get you to this moment, where you are presented as a young woman. Watching you as Santa’s helpers to allow young kids a chance to shop for loved ones, giving kids a chance to cast votes and have their voices heard, putting toys together and packing them for those less fortunate, and playing bingo with those at the Ronald McDonald House show you to be servant leaders in the community in which you live. Allow your talents and gifts to continue to shine as you move toward your goals of life.

As you continue your walk in life to achieve every goal you have set for yourself, remember to cherish every moment and there is nothing you can’t achieve.

Cotillion History In 1963, the Executive Committee of the Charlotte Alumnae Chapter was exploring fundraising ideas for the chapter when Grace Solomon, a chapter officer, conceived the idea of a Cotillion as a fundraiser. Under the leadership of Bertha Maxwell Roddey and Grace Solomon, the first Cotillion took place on April 17, 1964 at the Park Center (now the Grady Cole Center). The chapter presented twenty young ladies that night: Ethel Alexander, Jacqueline Belton, Beatrice Bowser, Nona Byers, Judy Carothers, Mollie Carter, Etta Davidson, Elizabeth Gilmore, Geraldine Grier, Barbara Harris, Claudette Irby, Vernie Johnson, Cynthia Leggett, Adrian McCaskill, Gayle McCombs, Vergie McKinley, Vivian Maxwell, Judy Ratchford, Sarah Ratchford, Vera Watson and Lutricia Wingate. The Cotillion Season spread over several months, as it does now, with the culmination being the Cotillion Ball. Mr. Julian Pyles served as Master of Ceremonies for the 1964 “A Night in Venice� Cotillion and Elaine Brown served as the first choreographer for the Cotillion dances. The legacy continues.

Debutante Community Service Hours

The debutantes embraced their community involvement and set exceptional examples for many younger girls in our community.

We are proud of the mmany contributions of time and service our debutantes have made. Service activities include Kids Voting, Salvation Army Angel Tree, Santa's Bag at ImaginOn and volunteering at Bright Blessings and the Ronald McDonald House. 130 Collective Hours were completed by the 2017 Debutantes.
