No doubt you recall asking this question from the backseat or responding to the question from the front seat. Regardless, it seems like a good question for reflection in looking back over the last decade at Gwynedd-Mercy College. On long-ago road trips that my husband and I took with our sons, we always had a destination mapped out for our journey. Sometimes we would make an unscheduled stop along the way…maybe for ice cream or to watch an unexpected parade of hot-air-balloons on the horizon. On other occasions, we encountered the dreaded detour that was not really well marked, thus providing an opportunity to engage our own compass to find the way. Just like on my family road trips, at GMC we have a very clear destination in mind. We are preparing Distinctive Mercy Graduates, who will be prepared for leadership and citizenship, as well as for rewarding careers and fruitful lives. Unlike on family road trips where it’s quite clear that “we are there” when we park in front of the vacation home, our GMC destination unfolds over a lifetime. Along the way, our students experience the “value added” dimension of their GMC education, which is found in the Mercy tradition of educating the whole person intellectually, spiritually, psychologically, socially and morally. Our small class sizes enable faculty to get to know their students and to work with them individually to cultivate their strengths. At GMC, when students apply for jobs or for graduate school, faculty can write strong, detailed letters of recommendation for them, because they know their students much more intimately than faculty in larger institutions. Students here also have ample opportunities and are encouraged to assume active leadership roles on campus. Plus, from day one they are introduced to the Mercy value of service and, thus, are expected to engage in service opportunities throughout their time as students. In fact, all first-year students are required to participate in a service-learning experience as part

of their First Year Experience — a mandatory part of their comprehensive learning experience. The undergraduate years at Gwynedd-Mercy College result in life-changing experiences. By fostering habits of critical thinking, powers of reflection, and problem-solving skills, a GMC education shapes our learners to lead lives of professional accomplishment, as well as deep meaning. GMC is proud of the fact that it provides its students with grounding in the Catholic intellectual tradition of open dialogue in the search for truth. Students of every faith or no faith are challenged to explore the enduring questions of civilization, for example: • • • • •

Is there a God and why do we exist? How can I lead a good life? Is there such a thing as a “just war?” What is “good government?” What is my responsibility for the poor or for care of the earth?

Accordingly, the humanities and sciences form the cornerstone of the deep learning that every GMC student receives regardless of major. At Gwynedd-Mercy College, we are bringing futures into focus; preparing graduates for careers and life; building democracy, while also being accessible and affordable. So the question remains: Are we there yet? Truth be told, I hope the answer will always be “not just yet,” because while Mercy calls us to remain grounded in our core values and beliefs, it also demands that we change and evolve to meet the great needs of our day. We cannot be content to think we have arrived; there’s always a little farther to go. On behalf of our students and my faculty/staff colleagues, I gratefully acknowledge your generosity, which has enabled the many accomplishments of the last decade as described in this report. Furthermore, I invite your continued prayers and support as our journey continues.

Kathleen Owens, PhD President

• Led by men’s and women’s tennis coach Jim Holt, the “Touch of Tennis” clinic wrapped up its 13th year of service to the community. The free, award-winning summer program is intended to teach special needs individuals who live in the area the fundamentals of the game, as well as provide opportunities for social growth.

Freshman students were introduced to service as a part of their orientation, traveling across the region to help underprivileged and underserved people of all walks of life. They traveled to homeless shelters, food kitchens and met with the elderly and mentally challenged. This year marked a record number of freshman and transfer students, as well as the largest body of undergraduate students to date. The men’s basketball team traveled to San Jose, Costa Rica during fall break to participate in volunteer work and get some practice before the season. From Oct. 8-11, 2011, coaches and players visited a low-income child care center for single mothers. Brandon Sharp ’12 was one player who brought previously-collected school supplies, books, stuffed animals, and t-shirts for the children. The team also competed in two exhibition games against top-level talent, winning both games. ▼

On Sept. 28, 2011, he visited Gwynedd-Mercy College’s Common Hour to discuss his wrongful conviction as a part of the program “Witness to Innocence.” His powerful story begins in South Central Los Angeles in the 1960’s, when he got caught up in a rash of street crime. While in prison, he was framed for killing a prison guard, putting him on death row for three years. After four trials, and eight years, Graham was finally exonerated. He has since vowed to tell his story to as many people as possible. ▲

Getting the Most of a Mercy Education Graduating from Gwynedd-Mercy College is only the beginning of a life rooted in the pillars of Mercy. The undergraduate experience teaches students to be cognizant of a world away from campus. They are balanced individuals who have a valued perspective and the motivation to meet the challenges of their day. Abby Reed ’12 exemplifies a student who didn’t just romanticize these characteristics, but embraced them wholeheartedly. Whether it was dedicating her spring break to service in the Dominican Republic or making sprawling saves for the women’s soccer team, Reed has left her footprints at Gwynedd-Mercy College. Now, it’s time to leave them on the rest of the world.

Connelly Foundation

This past March, Gwynedd-Mercy College broke ground on the newest structure on campus that will be home to the School of Education and School of Business. To date, the framework is in place and education and business students are anxiously awaiting the technologically savvy academic building. This project wouldn’t have been possible without the Connelly Foundation’s $500,000 pledge that also enabled the College to not only match, but exceed a $1 million challenge grant. As we look forward to the innovative features of the fully-equipped 50,000 square foot facility, we recall a history of enduring benevolence from the Connelly Foundation. This generous investment into the College’s future is not the first for the Foundation, as they have supported the College for over four decades contributing to every aspect of campus life – the facilities, the student population and the faculty. The Connelly family’s link to the College is much deeper. They have also been avidly supporting the mission of the Sisters of Mercy for 120 years with whom they have a family connection and profound bond. The Connelly’s contributions and longtime involvement with the College have helped shape the institution on all fronts. Their investment in the new academic building will enable the College to deliver exceptional academic programs utilizing emerging learning-oriented technology. Daniel Ressler, business student and president of the Business Club, expressed his excitement during the groundbreaking ceremonies in March.

(Left to right) William Avery, Larry Genuardi, Nancy Dunleavy, President Kathleen Owens, PhD, Kathleen Keenan, RSM ’83, Emily Reilly.

“The new building is sure to attract students looking for an advanced learning experience. The technology made available in these classrooms will contribute to the quality of education and students will have a new place to cultivate ideas. The students here all want to achieve greatness and this building is a step in the right direction for all of us,” Ressler said. The Connelly Foundation has been a loyal benefactor of Gwynedd-Mercy College and their gifts are sure to enrich the lives of students for years to come.

“The Connelly Foundation has had a long and valued relationship with Gwynedd-Mercy College over the last four decades in support of programs and facilities that enable the College to deliver exceptional academic programs. Thus, the Trustees of the Connelly Foundation are proud to once again invest in Gwynedd-Mercy College. Our $500,000 commitment to the new School of Education and School of Business will elevate the stature of the College and expand its reputation for developing distinctive Mercy educators and business professionals with the highest moral and ethical standards.” – Mrs. Josephine C. Mandeville, President of the Connelly Foundation

Hearst Foundation Inspires Latino Nursing Students

Studies have shown that Hispanic patients are often reluctant to receive treatment with the presence of language and cultural barriers in healthcare settings. On an annual basis, Gwynedd-Mercy College distributes financial support to qualified students of Hispanic ethnicity. Since 2007, the College has also seen a 150% increase in its Hispanic enrollment. When Gwynedd-Mercy College needed a boost in the endowment, the Hearst Foundation stepped in to inspire a generation of exceptional students. There are currently two Hearst Scholars for 2012-2013: Maritzabel Rojas and Silvia Sarmiento. Both have dreams of helping others overcome medical obstacles, and making the world a healthier place.

“The grant means a lot,” Sarmiento said. “I’m the first one to go to college from my family.” Jennifer Torres ’09/’10, who was a Hearst Scholar, has started her career at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Center City Philadelphia. She works in the Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery educating new parents on how to nurture their newborns and growing children. “The Hearst Foundation gave me the opportunity to be a part of the College community not just academically, but socially as well. If I hadn't received the scholarship I would have had to pick up a part-time job and would not have been able to participate on the Gwynedd-Mercy College Dance Team, the Student Activities Committee and student government. These groups I was involved with helped me to build me self-esteem, learn how to prioritize, and taught me how to be a leader,” Torres said. Gwynedd-Mercy College’s renowned Frances M. Maguire School of Nursing and Health Professions produces distinguished graduates who serve the community around them. But, it wouldn’t be possible without the many contributions made by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, and organizations like it.

The grant means a lot. I’m the first one to go to college from my family.

Despite a time of economic strain and budget cuts, the William Randolph Hearst Foundation demonstrated its unwavering commitment to diversity in the nursing profession. In early 2012, the Foundation presented Gwynedd-Mercy College with a $100,000 check to augment its William Randolph Hearst Endowed Scholarship Fund for Latino nursing students. The Fund was established in 1997 thanks to a grant awarded by the Foundation, and continues to flourish today. It has allowed the College the financial flexibility to offer larger scholarship awards to Hispanic nursing students or offer multiple awards of similar denominations to a larger population of students. The expectation is that these Hearst Scholars will remain in the Greater Philadelphia area to pursue nursing careers.

• As a part of the Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellows Program, sports journalist and writer Toby Smith came to speak to communications students about finding success in the business. The nine-time author, who has written for Sports Illustrated, ESPN the Magazine, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal, held workshops and offered insight about his career. • Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, Lisa McGarry, PhD, attended the “Leading for Diversity in Higher Education” conference in State College, Pa. Presented by the Office of Women in Higher Education, the networking and professional development forum dealt with core issues about administrative careers and diversity in the workplace. • Sister Catherine McMahon RSM, ’71, and Dr. Dawn Hayward were hosted by the Harvard Graduate School of Education in Boston, Mass. for a three-day conference. The event focused on key strategic considerations and leadership challenges associated with implementing performance assessment processes within higher education institutions. • Five students (Desiree Rose, Stephanie Alvarez, Lizabeth Leyes, Filipe Beauduy, and Gina Ferrera) traveled to Washington, D.C. to learn about immigration issues facing the country today. The “Justice Advocacy Program” brought together more than 40 students from various Mercy-sponsored colleges to participate in a healthy dialogue. Students met with legislators, lobbied their opinions and visited an immigrant center to hear from faith-based advocates.

10 for 10 – Dr. Owens’ Past Ten Years | 16

10for 10 Changes and challenges have shaped Gwynedd-Mercy College throughout the last decade. From the anticipated to the unforeseen, President Kathleen Owens, PhD has handled them all accordingly. Here, she sits down to answer “10 for 10” – 10 questions for 10 years.

1

The first time you visited Gwynedd-Mercy College in 2002, what about the campus made you feel like this was home?

I did not know a lot about this institution in particular, although the institutions where I have served have been similar. I was very impressed as I met members of the Gwynedd-Mercy College community and just found tremendous hospitality. I was also drawn to the natural beauty of the campus. I must admit that I also liked the fact that we are in close proximity to Philadelphia. Being from Chicago, I appreciated the cultural, dining and athletic venues that are available in a metropolitan area.

2

In previous employment, you were a faculty member and dean at Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill. You also served as vice president for academic affairs at Saint Francis University in Loretto, Pa. How did these jobs and previous experiences impact your current presidency?

I gained a unique perspective about life at Catholic institutions of a similar size, sponsored by a religious order. I became familiar with Catholic higher education and some of intricacies of it. I think I was able to bring my varied experiences, including faculty member, department chair, dean, and academic vice president and apply them to our teaching-learning environment. Furthermore, I have been blessed to have served with some great administrators who were wonderful mentors.

3

How has the entire “higher ed” landscape changed in the past 10 years?

The movement toward online learning and education is an area where we are going to be taking some giant steps forward during the upcoming academic year. I think we’re also seeing a much more regulatory environment in terms of reporting to external agencies – whether it is reporting required at the state level, or at the federal level from legislators influencing the U.S. Department of Education. Some of that is the result of the growth of the for-profit education industry – that’s another big change. Not that all regulation and accountability is bad, but it is expensive and takes key resources to hire people to assure compliance.

4

Many institutions were challenged by the country’s financial crisis in the latter portion of the 2000’s. What kind of bearing did this have on Gwynedd-Mercy College?

It has raised the consciousness of the American public with regards to the cost of higher education. During the financial crisis, our students and families were first and foremost in our minds – what can we do to keep a mercy education affordable? There were several belt-tightening measures that were taken to address this issue.

5

Are we still feeling the ramifications of the economy and these “belt-tightening measures”?

I don’t think we have completely bounced back yet to the pre-recession era. Every year as we shape our budget, our Board of Trustees is thoroughly engaged in the discussion about tuition rates, room and board, things that impact our families.

6

Were there ambitious ideas that weren’t able to come to fruition during your tenure thus far? Elaborate on some of the road blocks.

7

Major resources and collaborative efforts have been committed to erect a sparkling new building for the School of Education and School of Business in Gwynedd Valley, Pa. How is this going to redefine the academic experience for future students?

The new facility will really enrich the learning experience for our students. We’ve had great input from our own faculty members and from external advisors as far as the design of classrooms, seminar rooms, media labs, office space, as well as advanced technology needs. This building will provide opportunities for serendipitous learning. We are creating gathering spaces in hallways adjacent to faculty offices and classrooms since we know that not all learning occurs in the classroom. The building will positively influence our enrollment and the quality of our programs.

What other significant physical improvements have helped to “Bring Futures into Focus” at Gwynedd-Mercy College?

One of our strategic priorities is to put students first. We built a new residence hall in 2006 [Alexandria Hall] to promote the living-learning community on campus. One of the other things we did was to renovate the Admissions House. We knew the importance of having an attractive and functional place where students and families who are coming for the first time can come to learn about the College. I think our Campbell Solution Center would be another example of a physical improvement that has led to experiential improvements for our students. The way in which we’re able to address concerns of students and families – whether that’s finances, class registration or the Bursar’s Office. Our new Wellness Center and Late Night Lounge have been well received by students, and our new athletic complex supports both our intramural programs and competitive NCAA programs.

9

You’ve recently expanded the reach of Gwynedd-Mercy College’s distinctive educational programs to Bensalem, Pa. Have there been discussions about continued growth, and if so, what’s next?

[Editor’s Note: During Dr. Owens’ tenure three locations were opened: Center City in 2006, East Norriton in 2009, and Bensalem in 2012.] We are committed to providing educational opportunities for adult learners. Our next initiative will be to offer some of our programs in an online format. The first programs to transition from on-ground to online will be a few of our master’s degree programs in education.

10

What is the legacy you want to leave at this College?

To have Gwynedd-Mercy College recognized as a “Learning 1” institution. I am referring to the Carnegie Classification System* that categorizes colleges and universities based upon their research profile with “Research 1” at the top. While we do not aspire to be a “Research 1” institution, we do aspire to be a “Learning 1” institution, even though no such Carnegie category exists. *The Carnegie Classification™ has been the leading framework for recognizing and describing institutional diversity in U.S. higher education for the past four decades…This framework has been widely used in the study of higher education, both as a way to represent and control for institutional differences, and also in the design of research studies to ensure adequate representation of sampled institutions, students, or faculty.

17 | 10 for 10 – Dr. Owens’ Past Ten Years

In terms of the physical features on campus, one of the things that we’ve wanted to do and not been able to do is enhance the front entrance on Sumneytown Pike. There is little distinction between our neighbors at Gwynedd-Mercy Academy High School and the College. We have prepared plans for more “curb appeal,” but finances have not been available. That’s certainly something that is still on the agenda and I do anticipate that we will make some new changes.

The Francisco Family

Why We Give | 18

My enduring association with Gwynedd-Mercy College continues to evolve since stepping onto the bucolic campus in 1964. The paradigm for nursing education was beginning to shift, and GMC’s innovative two-year associate degree program was not my initial choice. However, the offer of a full tuition Mercy Grant afforded me the opportunity to build a successful and rewarding nursing career and to experience a vocation of service with a commitment to lifelong learning. I would be the first in my family to attend college, a college that provided education with integrity. I remember being amazed that tests and exams were not monitored. We abided by an honor code. Honesty was expected and to the best of my knowledge, always prevailed. After working for several years in Mercy hospitals, marriage and family became a full-time priority. By remaining active in healthcare on a part-time basis, I observed a gradual change in nursing education to a four-year academic format. While volunteering in the health room of our parish elementary school, I noted the demands and rewards of school nursing and the impact of wellness intervention. I had found my calling. However, a bachelor’s degree was a prerequisite for certification. With the offer of a second Mercy Grant, I returned to GMC. The commute was demanding. A patient husband, supportive faculty and commitment to discipline as an adult learner instilled the confidence and determination to complete the rigorous program. Final certification required additional credits and a K-12 internship. Without the generosity of Gwynedd-Mercy College, my serendipitous decision to attend a college program, and divine providence, I may never have obtained my dream job. I love to learn and continued to earn two master’s degrees during my 24-year tenure as a Nationally Board Certified School Nurse. Learning is not just an accumulation of knowledge but the ability to activate that knowledge through dissemination and communication. It stimulates discussion, supports moral and ethical behavior, facilitates positive change, and creates a global awareness of the right to human dignity, equality, and opportunity. My enthusiasm for Gwynedd-Mercy College influenced our daughter Kristina to take the same path, earning a BS in Accounting.

Kristina Francisco

Thanks to the generosity of my parents, I attended as a resident of a growing co-ed campus. As a member of the volleyball team, the opportunity of being a student-athlete developed a spirit of cooperation, discipline, loyalty, and responsibility. The philosophy behind the athletic programs at GMC recognizes the importance and contribution of each individual as the link to nurturing team effort. Any winning attitude fosters positive outcomes and anticipated achievement. Those traits have carried over to my career in banking with a large international corporation. The excellent education

BS ACCOUNTING, ’92

and superior counseling and guidance I received from career services well prepared me for my job search. It has been said: “There is a time to learn, a time to earn, and a time to return.” For the Francisco’s, philanthropy is not so much about giving back as it is giving to the future, for students to have the advantage of a college education that would otherwise be out of reach. Giving is not only a “thank you note” but an invitation to provide opportunity for empowerment.

During her senior year, Tara Grow ’12 identified the need for the Autism Institute to have a computer and responded in true mercy fashion. She approached her family who donated the money for the computer in memory of her uncle, Tom Grow. During graduation weekend, the Grow family was able to experience the effects of their donation during a student designed demonstration of the computer. The computer will continue to serve as a very valuable asset to the Institute’s teacher preparation and will be a great resource to parents and students in the community.

The Grow family made a significant contribution to the Autism Institute after a loved one was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome. Pictured from left to right are David Dickson, Beth Dickson, Jim Grow, Tara Grow ’12, Lois Grow, Anna Grow, and Tom Grow.
