A CATHOLIC, COLLEGE-PREP, ALL-GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL The DSHA mission, vision, and five Qualities of a Graduate drive everything we work towards as the only Catholic, Salvatorian, all-girls high school in the country. In these pages, you’ll see the impact of an outstanding college-prep education; one in which students learn to embody the goodness and kindness of Jesus Christ as they dream to become doctors, judges, mothers, engineers, entrepreneurs, teachers, and more. The community, and the opportunities for each and every Dasher to develop her passions in all areas of her life, are possible because of your generosity and support. Thank you.

OUR MISSION

OUR VISION

Divine Savior Holy Angels High School is a Catholic, college-preparatory high school for young women that excels at developing the whole person. Sponsored by the Sisters of the Divine Savior and grounded in their mission to make known the goodness and kindness of Jesus Christ, we develop our students into capable young women of faith, heart, and intellect who accept the gospel call to live lives that will make a difference.

DSHA will be: recognized as the premier choice for a girl seeking to grow into her full potential as a woman of faith, heart, and intellect.

QUALITIES OF A DSH DSHA A

GRADUATE SHE IS A WOMAN OF FAITH... ...who relies on Catholic Christian values which encourage her to act on God’s call to recognize her gifts and use her voice to pursue justice, live with integrity, and actively improve her world. A faith-filled role model, she demonstrates the highest respect and compassion for herself and for others by living a life that makes a difference.

SHE IS A SELF-ADVOCATE... ...who as a young woman learns to accurately assess her abilities and to recognize and resist the cultural forces and customs that would erode her own emerging sense of self or cause her to act in conflict with her own values and beliefs. Through systematic opportunities to learn, practice, and master self-advocacy behaviors, she begins to articulate her beliefs and values. She uses her own voice to state her opinion, ask questions, and effectively negotiate for her strongest possible outcome.

SHE IS A CRITICAL THINKER... ...who solves problems, improves processes, and sees what others cannot. She is innovative and creative, her wise counsel and enlightened perspectives are highly sought-after. She is an adaptable, analytical, and curious intellectual who pursues deep understanding and trusts her instincts and experience.

SHE IS A COMMUNICATOR... ...who is articulate, perceptive, and empowered to make her voice heard. She is highly skilled at interpersonal communication, effectively sharing ideas through various means, with various audiences, using advanced technology as needed. She is an active listener who is self-reflective and engaged and is a confident communicator who is unafraid to stand up and say what must be said.

SHE IS A LEADER... ...who takes initiative, leading by inspiration and influence. A skilled collaborator, she uses her full potential to motivate individuals and groups to accomplish goals and achieve dreams. She is inclusive, hopeful, and highly ethical; as a visionary leader, she is accountable to herself and to others, bravely forging new paths and building new connections.

ACHIEVING AND BUILDING THROUGH OUR MISSION By John McDermott, DSHA Board Chair 2021-23

DEAR DSHA COMMUNITY, The 2022-23 school year was another remarkable year as DSHA continues to thrive as an all-girls, Catholic, college-prep high school. As we develop young women of faith, heart, and intellect, our girls continue to be shining examples of the benefits of our whole-person approach to high school education. The year marked an especially exciting year in STEM accomplishments for DSHA. The SMART (Students Modeling a Research Topic) Team co-curricular presented real-world research alongside college and university students in Seattle; their project entitled, To See or Not To See: Assessing the Implications of the P23H Rhodopsin Mutation on Retinitis Pigmentosa, was presented at the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) conference. The 1732 Hilltopper Robotics Team, composed of both DSHA and MUHS students, qualified to compete in the FIRST® World Championship in Houston, TX where they finished within the top 5% of robotics teams in the world. The STEM Scholars program, designed for motivated students who are curious about and willing to engage in learning science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, grew to 65 application-based participants in the 2022-23 school year and is now at 97 participants this current year; up from 23 students in 2020. DSHA’s AP exam scores earning college credit continue to significantly outpace the national average by nearly 20%, and in May, the DSHA Class of 2023 became the newest members of the DSHA Alumnae family, receiving over $24 million in reported scholarship dollars to accepted colleges and universities. Of course, these achievements are always accomplished through the lens of our Catholic, Salvatorian identity. DSHA students celebrated nine all-school Masses; an average of 164 students attended optional Faith Friday Masses; and over 60 hours of Eucharistic Adoration were offered. A new project, $10,000 Together, focused on the year’s scriptural theme — “how good and kind it is when God’s people live together in unity” — from Psalm 133:1, and relied on collaboration from the entire student body. Throughout the year, Dashers raised a total of $10,000 and donated $1,000 each to ten non-profit organizations throughout Milwaukee.

BUILDING ON A STRONG FOUNDATION Our 2022-23 fiscal year was a sound year and ended with a small surplus. Total annual fund contributions from the DSHA community were slightly below our record setting 2021-22 year, yet exceeded all previous years. This year, DSHA saw its highest donor participation in more than five years, with alumnae and parents each surpassing their highest participation rate. Our annual fundraising is critical to funding the gap between tuition and the actual cost of a DSHA education. We cannot operate with a balanced budget without the contributions from this annual fundraising. We are grateful for all DSHA community members who help us annually achieve this goal. Although annual operations are secure, DSHA still has longer term strategic needs to fully allow it to effectively form girls in faith, heart, and intellect. These needs include bringing the original section of the school up to today’s standards by enhancing safety with more on-campus parking, updating STEM facilities, making sure that we have competitive athletic fields, and continued strengthening of our endowment. The Board of Directors and the administration of DSHA are focused on these items, and are actively working on a plan to address these key areas in the near future.

FROM THE

BOARD CHAIR A SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITY While we look toward the future, I am again so impressed with the accomplishments of the 2022-23 school year. DSHA has a strong and capable Board of Directors with a firm commitment to the school and its mission. As I complete my six years on the board, I’d like to thank Mike Hodan and Mary Jo Layden for their outstanding contributions. I would also like to welcome Ann Eisenbrown, Jacquie Fossett, Arlisia McHenry, Nicole Renouard, John Wimmer, and Barbara Henderson Ziebert to the Board for the 2023-24 school year. DSHA will miss their departing Board members, but is thankful for the enthusiasm of the new board members. Five of the six are current parents of DSHA students. We continue to be proud of our incredibly talented faculty and staff who care about each and every student and give our young women 100% of themselves day after day. They are responsible for the success of DSHA, and we could not achieve what we do without them. Lastly, I am grateful for my opportunity to serve on the DSHA Board. I’ve had the opportunity to meet so many impressive graduates who live the mission of DSHA in their lives. It’s easy to put statistics on a website. However, the true test of any high school are the graduates, the impact they have on others, and the difference they make in our world. Today’s environment is challenging. The encouragement, counsel, and support from the entire DSHA community provides the motivation for all of us to make DSHA the best it can be, and to continue our mission in support of the girls entrusted to our care. We are united in our mission to be the goodness and kindness of Jesus and to change the lives of young women in Milwaukee as we focus on the 2023-24 school year and beyond. Thank you for your generosity to this great institution. With sincere gratitude, John McDermott 2021-23 DSHA Board Chair

A SCHOOL THAT LEADS By Katie Konieczny, DSHA ‘92, President

DEAR DSHA COMMUNITY, We had a fantastic 2022-23 school year with so many things to celebrate. Each year as I begin to write this letter, intended to be a reflection on the year as a whole, I struggle with choosing how to distill an incredible year down to a few paragraphs. Our students, faculty, and staff have accomplished so much. This year, as we look at our achievements, I would like to draw attention to the ways we are a school that leads not only here in Wisconsin, but on a national stage as well.

A NOTEWORTHY MISSION In the 2022-23 school year our Academic Dean Heather Mansfield, Ph.D., led us through an accreditation process with a third-party accreditation organization, Cognia, based in Alpharetta, GA. They evaluated our institutional effectiveness at meeting national standards and benchmarks, and helped us assess our areas of strengths and opportunities for improvement. A year-long collection of data, surveys, study, evaluation, and analysis took place. We received outstanding feedback on the education we are providing our young women. Of special note, we are so proud to share that Cognia recognized our school with a rarely given “Noteworthy Practice,” meaning DSHA is now considered to be a school that nationally leads the way in doing the following according to Cognia’s standards: “The school board, administration, and staff have demonstrated a commitment to learners and support the mission of the school. Students’ well-being and the mission of the school guide all decisions. A multitude of programs, staff, co-curriculars, and academic supports are in place to ensure student needs are met. The mission and values of the school are articulated and shared to provide guidance and ensure all stakeholders are working toward the same goal and purpose.” As a Catholic school, nothing is more important than our mission. As a faculty, staff, administration, and board, we know that our mission drives every decision we make as we offer our young women a place to develop intellectually; to grow spiritually in their faith within a Catholic community; and to pursue passions of the heart which fuel their desires to make a difference in the world around them. I am so proud of the team I get to work with every day. The formal recognition of the delivery on our mission is a credit to the day-to-day, and hour-by-hour work of every member of the faculty, staff, administration, and board. 7

AP STEM CLASSES AT DSHA

On the previous pages in the letter from 2021-2023 Board Chair John McDermott, you just read about the remarkable year we had in STEM, from growing participation in our STEM Scholars program, to our SMART (Students Modeling a Research Topic) Team and Robotics Team shining on a national stage. So how does that translate into classroom success and college preparedness? A remarkable 61% of DSHA graduates from the class of 2023 intend to major in a STEM field in college. Additionally, our students are substantially out-performing the national average in AP STEM courses.

Our girls are leaving DSHA with more than a foundational knowledge-base in STEM. They are leaving with practical and real-world STEM applications, and the ability to integrate and apply concepts of mathematics and science toward real-world problem solving. On behalf of Principal Dan Quesnell and I, we are so grateful for the hard work and dedication of our STEM faculty. Their delivery on our mission is creating the next generation of doctors, engineers, teachers, and game-changers.

DASHER ATHLETICS SETS PACE AS A NATIONAL POWERHOUSE In the 2022-23 year, long-time Athletic Director Peggy Seegers-Braun was recognized with one of the highest national honors a high school athletic director can receive – the prestigious career-highlighting National Federation of State High School Associations (NHFS) Citation Award by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAA). Under her leadership, DSHA was also recognized as only one of 18 schools in the country whose coaches have earned an NFHS Level 3 Honor Roll status for their leadership and commitment to professional development. DSHA Varsity A-Side Rugby earned its 10th national title, while Varsity Volleyball finished the season ranked 19th nationally. Additionally, the following athletes earned individual All-American or national recognitions: in volleyball, Bella Lipski, DSHA ’23; Sophia Wendlick, DSHA ’24; and Madison Quest, DSHA ’25; in field hockey, Mack Doerr, DSHA ’23; in ski, Payton Bradford, DSHA ’24; and Riley Doerr, DSHA ’26; and in soccer, Piper Dupies, DSHA ’23.

DSHA IS A SCHOOL THAT LEADS As I reflect back on the ways our Dashers, faculty, and staff are setting pace in Milwaukee and beyond, I am so grateful to those of you in our community who make this happen. It is your generosity that allows each one of these accomplishments to occur. We would not be who we are without your financial support. Our young women would not have the stage to dream and achieve without your gifts to DSHA. You are very directly creating the next generation of women who will make a mark on this world. You are creating leaders by supporting a school that leads. Thank you. With deepest gratitude, Katie Konieczny, DSHA ‘92 President

SERVICE SERV SERVI ICE IN ACTION VOCARE SENIOR REFLECTIONS

From February 27 - March 10, Divine Savior Holy Angels High School seniors embarked on Vocare, a service immersion experience. Vocare, meaning “to draw forth; to call,” is the capstone of each student’s four years of Salvatorian service while at DSHA. Each senior spends two full weeks in the greater Milwaukee community and works alongside the elderly, children, those with special needs, or community outreach organizations. Students experience firsthand the critical issues facing society while gaining a deeper understanding of how they utilize their God-given gifts and talents in service to others. On March 16, DSHA students, faculty, and staff gathered in the Robert and Marie Hansen Family Fine Arts Theatre to welcome seniors back from Vocare. During the assembly, the DSHA community heard from fourteen seniors who shared their personal experiences and reflections gained during the two weeks. On the next few pages, are the reflections from three members of the DSHA Class of 2023, who shared what they learned and how they were shaped by their experience.

FAITH FEATURE

AVA MELVIN, DSHA ‘23, ON SERVING AT FRANCISCAN PEACEMAKERS

Peacemakers gives out to women facing homelessness. In all of these tasks, I had the opportunity to interact with some of the graduates of the program who work there, as well as two women currently in the program. One of them said to me, “People told me I couldn’t weather the storm, but I told them – I am the storm.” I realized that this is exactly what Franciscan Peacemakers does. They help women, who are in unthinkable situations feel special and loved, provide resources and support, and help them to conquer their storms. The women in the program have so much personality and love for everyone at Franciscan Peacemakers. They are also so happy and grateful for everything that Franciscan Peacemaker does for them. It’s amazing to see so much joy in those who are often seen as outcasts in society. In the couple interactions I had with the residents, they were beyond grateful for so many things I often take for granted. They appreciated all the items in the hygiene bags, such as a toothbrush and toothpaste; two things I have taken for granted.

When I arrived at Franciscan

Peacemakers on the first day of Vocare I had no idea what to expect. Franciscan Peacemakers seeks to help women who are engaging in prostitution due to sex trafficking, drug addiction, or trauma. This strong women-led organization aids women experiencing homelessness by providing them with meals, hygiene bags, and warm clothes. They support these women when they are going through detox and are their right-hand support while in the program. The women in the

program receive housing at St. Bakhita Catholic Worker House and have jobs at Franciscan Peacemakers, where they help make bath and home products. From the women in the program to every single employee – they all embody Jesus. During those two weeks, we cleaned and reorganized the store and workroom. We helped make bars of soap, pump lotion, package and label candles, bar soaps, and bath bombs. We helped pack over 200 hygiene bags that Franciscan

12

The women we worked alongside of are angels. They know every single woman they see by name and know their life stories. They made sure every single woman left with a smile on their face, regardless of how their day had been going otherwise. They asked about specifics of these women’s lives, making each of them feel loved and valued as a member of the Franciscan Peacemakers community. God is present everywhere in the organization. My Vocare experience at Franciscan Peacemakers taught me the meaning and value of loving those who we do not know. Similar to the experiences of the residents interacting with the women of Franciscan Peacemakers, I feel as if I have a whole new family and perspective with whom to conquer my own storms.

SERVICE IN ACTION VOCARE SENIOR REFLECTIONS

I wouldn’t say I’m overly patriotic when I draw by any means, but when I was about to finish, I suddenly and inexplicably felt almost compelled to include a minute detail of a flag that hung on the house in the drawing. “Are you gonna give it to him?” asked Macy. Knowing John, the mere thought of disturbing him made my eyes widen. “Gosh, no,” I responded. “I think you should!” she encouraged me.

SOFIA GRBIC, DSHA ‘23, ON SERVING AT THE ELIZABETH RESIDENCE BAYSIDE CAMPUS

I was blessed to serve at Elizabeth

Residence in Bayside, in the portion designated for end-of-life service, where most every resident is wheelchair-bound, incoherent or non-communicative, and cannot perform daily activities, like eating, using the bathroom, or moving, without aid. Elizabeth Residence, however, works passionately to fulfill their philosophy: to provide the best and most comfortable care and allow their residents to live in the moment with joy. When I reflect on my Vocare experience, one particular story comes to mind. I was sitting during free time between activities with the elderly residents of my facility, seated quietly between their reclining sofas, eyes glued to a black and white film playing on their widescreen TV. These moments between scheduled events

of the day, like the weekly “Sit and Be Fit” exercise program or “Friday’s Happy Hour” with special performing guests, were rare, but rather than feel intrusive or unproductive, I had brought some art supplies for these moments. As my fellow volunteer, Macy Hill, DSHA ’23, made a string-bracelet to give to a resident beside me, I began to sketch a picture of the man seated in front of me watching the film. John, with a permanent frown stuck below a furrowed brow, was notoriously grumpy, and silent if not perpetually asking for a bag of Baked Lays chips. I drew him in his recliner, leaned back, legs crossed, hands folded. When I began to draw his surroundings, I decided I wanted him to not be staring at the television, but instead to be pondering a painting of a lake house that was hung up nearby.

13

“Hmmm…okay...but 50 percent chance he just stares at me,” I said. “And 25 percent chance he doesn’t even look up,” she joked. Mustering courage, I walked up, a little shaky. “Hi John, I hope you–uh–don’t mind, but I drew this picture of you...” And when I tell you I had never, ever previously thought his frown could possibly lift up like that, his face lit up entirely as he sat up and gingerly took it from my outstretched hand. “Oh, my. Oh, wow. Well, thank you,” he said quietly, proceeding to fold it gently into fourths and place it in his pants pocket. I can confidently say that from then on his deep, deep frown was a little softer, at least for the next entire hour. I later was told that he was in the Air Force and had fought in Vietnam. DSHA provides a rare experience through Vocare. I am so grateful to know that our actions are helping bring others faith in our generation and thus in our collective future. I know that the continuity of this tradition will continue to help uplift others, as each successive class enters into their Vocare experience senior year.

FAITH FEATURE

to expect. Furthermore, I was a little wary of the amount of time I’d be there. I’d never had a negative service experience, but what if I was placed somewhere I was really uncomfortable and was stuck there for two weeks? Walking into my site, however, I quickly realized that my fears had been unfounded. Our site managers were immediately welcoming and excited about our arrival. The clients were equally open, and some introduced themselves, unprompted within minutes. It was a warm environment from day one. I was in charge of morning dance fitness and whatever else I needed to do to help the managers. Over the course of our time there, we were also asked to come up with our own hour-long activity. I chose to do Music Trivia, an idea I lifted from Mr. Montgomery (Social Studies Faculty Tom Montgomery.)

BRYANA ASSIGBLEY, DSHA ‘23, ON SERVING AT GOODWILL JAMES O. WRIGHT DAY SERVICES

My most important job, however, was being present to and spending time with the clients daily. Whether it be through card games, playing Just Dance on the Wii, or simply conversing, I spent my two weeks building connections with the people we were serving in a way I had never done before.

Most people think of Goodwill as a

large thrift store chain, but Goodwill actually provides a variety of additional community services. They deliver vocational training, transitional employment, community programs, and even do laundry for healthcare groups and the military. There is a considerable focus on serving vulnerable members of society, particularly the disabled. Attached to the James O. Wright outlet is a second building where these programs are run. The Day Services Clubhouse program, where I was placed on my Vocare experience, is meant to support

people with various intellectual and developmental disabilities. Through enrichment courses, volunteer work, community outings, and an encouraging, safe environment, these adults gain and build the skills needed for a more independent, community-oriented life. Still, going into Vocare, I was pretty apprehensive for a few reasons. Goodwill wasn’t my first choice, and until a couple of weeks before the start of Vocare, I thought I would just be sorting clothes. I had never worked with the population I would be serving, so I had no idea what

14

My main takeaway from Vocare - how much kindness, community, and time touch many of the people in the Goodwill program. My experience has changed the way I see the world. I got to immerse myself in my community and the reality of others just blocks away with no distractions for two weeks. I really connected to the clients at my site through hearing their unique stories, and the experience gained was invaluable. I’m not the saccharine, sentimental type, but having served there for Vocare and reflecting on my time, I realized Goodwill touched me, too. I’m excited to continue pursuing service opportunities next year at Marquette University and the years ahead.

FINDING HER VOICE AT DSHA DASHER KICK-OFF ADDRESS By Julia Rentmeester, DSHA ‘23

January 25 marked the DSHA Class of 2027 Dasher Kick-Off, in which the incoming freshman class gathered for the first official time at DSHA. They met oneon-one with faculty and staff to register for classes, met their school counselors, and learned more about the DSHA experience. Julia Rentmeester, DSHA ‘23, also addressed the incoming class during the night. During her speech, Rentmeester reflected over her last four years on how DSHA has developed her into the woman of faith, selfadvocate, critical thinker, communicator, and leader that she is today. Below, read her address to the class of 2027.

I came into freshman year nervous, afraid, and quiet with no desire to stick out. Now, four years later, if you asked any of my teachers, friends, or family how they would describe me, I don’t think those words would cross their minds. DSHA developed me into the strong, confident, outspoken young woman I always had within me, but didn’t know how to express.

When I walked into DSHA on my first day of freshman year, I had two goals in mind. First, I vowed that I would never, ever become one of the three senior girls who stood outside in penguin costumes and cheered because that looked terrifying and I was not courageous enough to do that. My second goal was to keep my head down and do whatever it took to blend in.

Stepping through those front doors meant that I was going from being in a class of 30 students who I’d known since kindergarten, to a class with over 170 girls of whom I knew less than 15. This is probably a similar situation for most of you. I thought I’d love the feeling of starting fresh and being a new person, but in reality, I was terrified. So for those first few weeks of freshman year, I followed what everyone else did and focused on sports and academics.

15

This transformation didn’t happen overnight. It started when I was willing to take a leap and say yes. The first step in my journey was running for Student Council. I saw it as my big opportunity to step out of the person I was at the start of the year and get involved. If you could have seen my mom’s face when I told her this, you would know how out of character this was for me. Not only was I thinking of giving a speech in front of my entire freshman class, but I was also running for School Pride, the commission all about energy, being loud, and promoting school spirit. The commission that also happened to be run by our “mascots”—the Pennies—the same girls in the penguin costumes that I had been afraid of on the very first day of school. To make a long story short, I contradicted every intention I had of blending in and performed a self-written rap about DSHA School Pride to my class of 170 girls, and shockingly, I won the election. That election was a huge breakthrough in setting my path to explore new opportunities, and I don’t think it would have happened if I hadn’t been here at DSHA. DSHA’s safe, all-girls environment allowed and encouraged

HEART

FEATURE

me to step out of my comfort zone and practice my leadership. DSHA laid the groundwork, and I had to learn to say yes. I’ve carried that openness with me through my four years as I’ve taken on more leadership roles in retreats, Campus Ministry, and other areas. But I’ve also used it to push myself out of my comfort zone to try new things, even if I’m not the best. For example, I transitioned from volleyball to cross country my junior year, and, although I really struggled to adapt at first, I discovered a strong community of girls and coaches who pushed me to be my best and supported me no matter what. As I approach graduation, I’ve become more grateful for the endless opportunities to succeed that DSHA offered me. I’ve had the privilege of having numerous influential teachers and figures stick by my side and support me all four years. They have led me to who and where I am today. I’ve made some of my best friends and memories within this school, and I wouldn’t trade my time here for anything. As I look out at all of you, the class of 2027 and the future of DSHA, I see a little part of myself four years ago. Although I won’t be here next year, I’m excited to see you all thrive in your own passions and strong suits, to watch you discover new interests and make new friends, and to someday meet the lovely women all of you will become and already are. I look out at you, and I see girls who are ready, whether you know it or not.

By simply being here and being open to saying yes and stepping out of your comfort zone, you are already on the path to success. Don’t be afraid to just jump in. Take advantage of the summer camps we offer for the incoming freshmen, talk to new people, and — yes this may sound incredibly cringy — but be yourself! DSHA is made for each one of you to pave your own way. I’m still the same girl I was freshman year, but DSHA pushed me to reach my potential that I didn’t even see in myself. All I wish for you is that, like me, you will fail at any silly goals you set for yourself on the first day of school and instead take advantage of any opportunity you want at DSHA. It’s going to be scary and nerve-wracking but also exciting, positive, and likely life-changing. I know it was for me. The best way I can think to end this speech to the newest freshmen class of DSHA is with the three things I would tell my freshman self who started my journey here. First, you’re now going to be a freshman again as you go to college and get to relive this entire experience, so buckle in. Second, surprise! You are one of the Pennies, the senior girls in the penguin costumes, and you love it! And third, DSHA will change your life in ways you can’t even imagine.

I’ve thought a lot about what advice I needed as an incoming freshman, and it boils down to something simple. You don’t have to know what to expect. You don’t have to have the next four years mapped out or even the next few months.

16

DSHA’s safe, all-girls environment allowed and encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and practice my leadership. DSHA laid the groundwork, and I had to learn to say yes.”

LIVING IN THE PRESENT 2023 VALEDICTORIAN ADDRESS By Kate Hemsworth, DSHA ‘23

On May 26, 165 DSHA seniors, along with their family and friends, gathered in the Miller High Life Theater in downtown Milwaukee for the DSHA Class of 2023 Graduation. The girls, dressed in the traditional white gowns and gloves, entered the theatre while the DSHA Divine Strings performed Pomp and Circumstance. Opening with a blessing and prayer, Principal Dan Quesnell then welcomed the class to the special ceremony. He congratulated the girls for their collective drive and perseverance to reach this moment, and acknowledged those on the stage with him including President Katie Konieczny, DSHA ‘92, Academic Dean Heather Mansfield, and Sisters of the Divine Savior Sponsorship Coordinator S. Grace Mary Croft, SDS, DS ’56. Following his opening remarks, Quesnell introduced Valedictorian Kate Hemsworth, DSHA ’23, and recounted her academic excellence throughout her four years, especially noting her passion and love for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.) She is attending college at the prestigious Washington University in St. Louis where she will study biochemistry on a pre-medicine track as a National Merit Finalist, Wisconsin Excellence Scholar, and Presidential Scholar. Quesnell invited Hemsworth to the stage where she had the opportunity to address her peers and those gathered. Below are the words she shared including her advice to find joy in the little moments, live in the present, and be grateful for it all.

Although I’ve never been in love

with public speaking, I’m sure this can’t be any worse than our Catcher in the Rye presentations. Looking out at this crowd, which is significantly larger than my sophomore year English class, I am immensely grateful for each and every one of you surrounding me today. Behind each graduate are parents who suppressed amusement while listening to our rants about high school drama, grandparents who cheered us on whether we were first place contenders or dead last in every competition, and teachers from our grade schools and high school who consistently ushered us through our academics whether we were receptive to their lessons or not. Thank you. Each and every one of you has played a vital role in getting all of us here tonight. To the class of 2023, congratulations! This is the milestone we dreampt about

17

for years, the day that seemed ridiculously far away when we were stuck studying optimization at midnight the day before a calculus test. More often than not, we wished we could grow up a little faster, so we could reach this exact moment and get on with the rest of our lives. Back when we were freshmen, we would’ve done anything to drive ourselves to school, even if it meant parking in the neighborhood. But then, by the end of our sophomore year, we seemed to have forgotten how cool we thought it was to drive, for all we wanted was to move onto the big plaid. Yet, as soon as these dreams were fulfilled, we all wished to jump ahead to senior year so we could be freed from the burdens of the ACT and graced with the gift of senioritis. However, when we received our 20th reading assignment for Jane Eyre, it became rather easy for us to lose sight of the fact that these were the moments we’d wished for! So, we all prayed and prayed for graduation to come sooner. Now, as overjoyed as I am to be graduating with you all today, I am also so glad we had to live through every last seemingly mundane moment of high school together. Because if we had been able to skip ahead to this day, we would’ve missed out on watching the sunrise together before seizing the only opportunity we will ever

have to pour glitter on unsuspecting freshmen. If we had skipped ahead, we wouldn’t have gotten to cheer on our classmates at Airband, write each other palanka notes at senior retreat, or learn the circuitous and direct routes to the homes of classmates who live in cities and suburbs outside of our own. But even when nothing big or memorable was happening, and the longing to break free from the confines of high school was at a peak, I’m glad we had to live through the more ordinary times. Even our most boring days at DSHA were filled with moments we often take for granted, like talking with lab partners about absolutely anything besides the lab, waiting for new word searches and sudokus outside the den, laughing with friends during Dasher time, getting an adrenaline rush when you’re wearing plaid pajama pants and see Mrs. Duffy (Theology Faculty Mary Duffy) speeding down the hallway on her secret weapon, her scooter, and even just smiling at each other as we pass in the stairwell. And to think of how eager we were in September to just get it all over with! Now that we are about to part ways, we have a decision to make. We can either spend the rest of our lives looking forward to everything we are to achieve in the future, or we can consciously choose to embrace the moment we are currently living in. As we embark on our next journey, I encourage us to pause, to cherish the present, and to find comfort living in the less eventful parts of our lives. After all, it was the seemingly ordinary moments, the ones we never really think about as they’re happening, that have made our high school experience one to remember. So, even when nothing exciting is happening and the days begin to blend together, don’t wish away the present. Instead, remember how much joy something as simple as an orchid day or a cafeteria cookie could bring during our years here, and try to find those little joys wherever you are. No matter how eager we are to grow

up and no matter how badly we want to move forward with our lives, let us all stop and be grateful for the present moment. Be grateful for the friendships you make and hold them close while you can. Because as much as it felt like we would be with our classmates forever, here we are, saying goodbye. Be grateful if you ever meet a professor who is as passionate about teaching as Mrs. Strandberg (Science Faculty & Department Chair Stacey Strandberg) or as kind as all of our teachers here at DSHA. Be grateful for the people in your life like Ms. Wissing (Mathematics & Specialized Studies Faculty Libby Wissing, DSHA ’10), who always tells her class to have a great rest of their day, and Mr. Montgomery (Social Studies Faculty Thomas Montgomery), whose killer recorder skills never fail to stun us all. As hard as it is to accept, so many wonderful people, places, and things are not permanent aspects of our lives, so be thankful while you still can. Let us all appreciate every little moment along our journeys, for so often, our longing to grow up eclipses the beauty of the present. As always, Taylor Swift says it best. So to the class of 2023, “Even though you want to, just try to never grow up.” Enjoy the little moments because before you know it, it’ll all just be a fond, messy, beautiful memory to look back on.

$

DONATED TO 10 ORGANIZATIONS

Throughout the 2022-23 school year, DSHA students worked together on a project called $10,000 Together. Inspired by the school year’s scriptural theme — “how good and kind it is when God’s people live together in unity” — from Psalm 133:1, the project relied on collaboration from Campus Ministry, Student Council, cocurriculars, and the full student body. The goal was to raise $1,000 for 10 organizations that were important to DSHA students. Dashers raised over $10,000 total for the following organizations: (ABCD) After Breast Cancer Diagnosis; the St. Bakhita Catholic Worker House; Camp Hometown Heroes; Warm Hands, Warm Hearts; La Casa De Esperanza; SEA Literacy; PEARLS for Teen Girls; Best Buddies Wisconsin; MacCanon Brown Homeless Sanctuary; and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

2022-23 DONOR CONTRIBUTIONS The entire DSHA community—parents, friends, foundations, alumnae, businesses, and even our students—were generous in showing support through financial gifts to DSHA during the 2022-23 fiscal and academic year. DSHA saw its highest donor participation in more than 5 years, with alumnae and parents each surpassing their highest participation rate. The following are our largest donor categories.

ENDOWMENT | $523,174

ANNUAL FUND | $802,064 The generous donors contributing to the DSHA Annual Fund help cover the gap between the cost of tuition and the full cost of a DSHA education. The annual fund supports the full Catholic, Salvatorian, all-girls high school experience—from scholarships that allow DSHA to enroll the strongest student body possible, to the outstanding college-preparatory academics, faith formation, co-curriculars, and support all students receive. Contributions to the annual fund are vital to form young women in faith, heart, and intellect.

25

The DSHA endowment provides enduring and generous support to students of today, tomorrow, and of the future, ensuring they will receive the premier Catholic, Salvatorian, college-preparatory education for young women in Milwaukee. The endowment supports scholarships for eager students, as well as faculty professional development.

DSHA AUCTION * | $360,284 The DSHA community traveled to the historic Pritzlaff building in downtown Milwaukee for the Pearls of Wisdom 2023 Auction. Funds raised during the live and silent auctions support the school’s general operating budget. A favorite portion of the evening occurs during Stop-The-Auction where attendees give in support of Dashers who would not have the means to attend DSHA without the help of generous donations, specifically supporting need-based scholarships. By raising a paddle, guests gave more than $188,667 for scholarships alone.

Scan the code to view the 2023 Stop-the-Auction scholarship video.

SPECIFIED GIFTS | $135,161 Occasionally, donors wish to apply their gifts to a specific area of the overall DSHA experience, supporting a specific department, fine arts, athletics, or co-curriculars. These gifts support DSHA in developing the whole person in their students.

SCHOLARSHIP | $603,535 Scholarships at DSHA benefit all girls and allow for an outstanding all-girls, Catholic education with the strongest student body possible. This includes a financial and mission-based commitment to a diverse group of women with different gifts, perspectives, and life experiences. Almost 40% of the student body relies on need-based scholarships to receive a DSHA education; additional scholarship awards are given to students for demonstrating strong academic, leadership, and service pursuits, or for exhibiting outstanding character. 95% of families who apply for financial aid receive some form of need-based scholarship upon acceptance, and the average need-based award is $6,400.

DASH-A-THON * | $82,311 Dash-A-Thon is an annual school-wide 7-mile walk that provides students with fresh air, social time as a community, and a chance to dress in theme. The theme was Dash through the Universe. Most importantly, the event gives students an opportunity to fundraise for and financially give to DSHA. Since it’s start nearly four decades ago, DashA-Thon has provided countless financial support for DSHA, supporting it’s mission and the experiences it gives to young women in Milwaukee.

PARENT ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION GOLF OUTING * | $79,910 Parents, alumnae, community members, and friends of DSHA had a PAR-TEE at the PAA Golf Outing, during which all monies raised go directly to the DSHA Athletic Department. The Parent Athletic Association’s only fundraiser, the outing helps provide the best coaches, trainers, and equipment to DSHA student athletes. * Special events contributions are net total.

As a family, we firmly believe in giving back. We are guided by the principle that for those that have been given much, much is expected. We have been blessed in so many ways that we want to give of our time, talent, and resources. Catholic education is very important for our family and has positively impacted us in so many ways. Giving back helps insure that other families and their daughters can have the same experience.”

We give to DSHA because we firmly believe in the mission of the school and have personally witnessed the transformation of students. They come into DSHA as freshmen, not really knowing who they are, and leave as confident, capable young women who go out and change the world. It is amazing to see this happen consistently year after year. I can’t think of a better way to spend our money than on the future leaders of our society. Every aspect of DSHA is quality and provides so many opportunities to help transform students to grow into the young women they were meant to be. Our faculty, staff, and coaches are top-notch and provide such meaningful experiences to draw out the best in our students. The donations given are so impactful to these experiences. I have always said in athletics that if we all pull together in the same direction, great things will happen, and the money we give is an important part of the pulling together to make great things happen. I encourage you to join us in giving.”

Q: What was your experience like at DSHA? It is challenging to put into words. I had a great experience, and I look back on my years at DSHA very fondly. If I had to describe it, it really just gave me the safe space to explore friendships, sports, service activities, and allowed me to figure out who I was and what I wanted to do with my life.

Erin McDermott Stanek, DSHA ’04, has been giving back to DSHA for nineteen years. As a second-generation student, with two young future Dashers, she believes strongly in the mission of the school to develop young women of faith, heart, and intellect. She invests financially in the school as well as volunteering her time. Stanek has been a member of the DSHA Alumnae Board since 2016 and volunteered as an Administrative Assistant for the Annual Fund in 2020. Stanek is currently the Private Asset Management Research Manager at Baird, with a BS in Business Administration and an MSA in Accounting from Marquette University.

Q: How did the all-girls environment of the school impact you? Why do you think this environment is important for young women? You can’t separate the all-girls environment from DSHA. Without it, DSHA cannot be the excellent school that it is. Being a high school student, and specifically being that age, can be extremely difficult. The all-girls environment is unique and allows girls to focus on themselves and take the time to learn who they are, the things that are important to them, their interests, and what they might want to do in the future. Q: How were you impacted by DSHA’s Catholic identity? Looking back, I dabbled in a lot of different activities but was most actively involved with the Pastoral Ministry Council (now Campus Ministry). I helped organize biweekly food drives with other students and participated in every retreat available to me. I was so involved in that

space because I wanted to give back to the school and the Milwaukee community through service. In relation to service, the Catholic identity at DSHA is a defining factor of the school. It was grounding to start each day with prayer, view Catholic symbols in the classrooms, and be given the opportunity to discuss faith throughout the school day. That Catholic identity is an integral component in developing and forming the whole person. Q: What were the most important skills you learned at DSHA that you still use today? Critical thinking, confidence, and communication. It is funny now that I say these skills aloud because two of them are included in the five qualities of a DSHA graduate.

if I was able to give back one day that I would. In addition to this, I’ve always personally thought that we all have gifts to give—whether time, treasure, or talent—and all are equally important. Q: Why did you want to join the Alumnae Board at DSHA? I think DSHA has an amazing network of alumnae and graduates, and being on the board allows me to meet them and stay current on what is going on with the school. It also gives me exposure to engage with them through various events and avenues I would not have had otherwise. Q: What impresses you the most about DSHA today? The focus on students as young women and developing them into individuals of faith, heart, and intellect. The school has adapted, grown, and changed since I’ve attended but the focus through all of that has been to improve the experience for each and every student. Ultimately, it is impressive that DSHA is providing an environment for young women to grow into their best possible selves.

Q: What compels you to give both your time and your financial support to DSHA? I am forever grateful for the experiences I had at DSHA and I am aware that there were individuals before me who gave their time, talent, and treasure to ensure the experience was positive for me. Now, I want to be part of giving that back to current and future students.

Q: What are your hopes for DSHA in the future?

Q: You have two young daughters you hope will attend DSHA in the future. Do you find them to be a source of motivation for giving back to the school?

I hope that the school continues to focus on providing young women with the opportunities they need to grow academically, in faith, and as a whole person.

I do. One big motivator for me to give back is my own positive experience and making sure other students have the same opportunities I was given. My daughters have already been involved at DSHA through Summer Cool and frequenting the theatre productions, but my hopes for them to attend the school are enhanced by what I, and others, are willing to contribute today. I could easily wait until they are students, but I recognize that what happens between now and then is going to impact their experience just as much. It is important that I am involved now to ensure they are given the same opportunities. Q: Your parents (Chris Oldam McDermott, DSHA ’76, and 2021-2023 DSHA Board Chair John McDermott) have been long-time donors and volunteers to DSHA. What influence does their generosity have on you? My parents have always led with their actions. Growing up, and through today, I have watched them give generously to the causes and organizations that are important to them. It was so ingrained in our familial unit that I knew

Stanek’s daughter crowns Mary at the DSHA May Crowning on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at St. Camillus.

Although I am a ‘boy mom,’ I continue to give to DSHA because I believe in the school’s mission of developing each young lady who attends; mind, body, and spirit. DSHA is a large reason for the woman that I am today, as a daughter, professional, friend, sister, mother, and more! The future foundation that is laid by attending DSHA is unmatched, both socially and academically. It is my hope that my on-going contributions allow several young ladies to experience the positive growth that comes from being a Dasher.”

~ Jayda Thomas, DSHA ‘23

The opportunities given to me at DSHA have been vital to my whole-person development, and I want to provide that to other young women. Because of this, I joined the Mosaic Class of 2023 fundraising committee that encourages young Dashers, including myself, to give back and raise dollars for our school. As I’ve lived out the full DSHA experience, I’ve learned how important it is to ensure that other young women are given the same opportunities and experiences that I have been so fortunate to receive. A gift to the annual fund supports the next generation of young women who are growing in faith, heart, and intellect.”

Through our four daughters, we have seen how a DSHA education empowers young women to pursue their future goals with confidence. We value the all-girls, collegepreparatory, Catholic education that DSHA offers, and hope to keep the tradition thriving for future generations. We give to DSHA because we feel it is important to share this community with any girl who wishes to be a part of it.”

GIFTS IN HONOR OF OTHERS In 2022-23, generous donors made a difference in the lives of the young women of DSHA by making a gift honoring those who have made a difference in their own lives. These gifts are received in two ways: gifts in memory of a deceased family member, friend, alumnae or supporter of DSHA; or gifts that honor living members of the DSHA community.
