Welcome!

My desire to share first aid skills with the next generation of life savers has been realised with the production of DR ABC. DR ABC is an exciting new magazine to introduce 7 -11 year old children to 'Essential Life Skills'.

The emphasis is on teaching children in a fun, enriching and innovative way. We have considered social development, STEM and literacy.

DR ABC will provide the children with the skills and knowledge to recognise a variety of first aid situations and how to deal with them and summons helping.

All children are able to help someone in an emergency situation, once they have the confidence to do so.

I’m Gracie.

I like to play on my own because sometimes I’m a bit shy. My favourite subject is maths, I find remembering numbers really easy.

Hi, I’m Lilly. I’m the first to volunteer in class. I’m always smiling and happy. I like to learn about first aid. My hobbies are colouring and doing crosswords.

What is First Aid? First Aid is what you do while you are waiting for help to come - because it is what you do first.

When someone is injured we call them a casualty.

To be a good first aider you need to be able to listen to what the casualty tells you and not panic.

Sometimes they might be hurting and you need to ask questions. Good questions are: What happened? Where does it hurt? How are you feeling?

Tell them you are going to try to help them.

Sometimes you might only be able to call for an ambulance. Other times you might be able to do more.

Knowing where you can find a first aid kit is always useful. Do you know where to find one?

The first aid kit will usually be green. It will have plasters, bandages, gloves and other items which are all useful.

What should we do if something goes wrong?

Sometimes accidents happen and we might need to call for help from the emergency services. Do you know what number to call?

Pete says:

It's a good idea to put the phone on speaker so you can help with any first aid.

They will ask your name and address. Do you know your address? Do you know the postcode of your address? They might also ask you what telephone number you are calling from, can you remember telephone numbers?

Oscar knows that helping people when they need help will make him feel very proud of himself. Sometimes we might need to call for an ambulance to take a casualty to hospital. If Oscar has to make an emergency call he knows he has to stay calm. He knows the operator needs to find out what has happened. If an ambulance is needed they will send one, it will be on its way to you while you are talking.

Pete says:

We do not need an ambulance for small injuries. The paramedic and ambulance are for serious injuries.

The operator will ask if the casualty is breathing or able to respond. They will ask where the casualty is hurt or if you can see any blood. They will tell you what you can do to help.

If the casualty is not breathing we need to act quickly and follow the 3 links in the triangle of survival.

The Recovery position

Gracie is going to sh ow us how to put the casualty in the re covery position If a casualty is unconscious they are in danger of their tongue falling into the back of their throat and blocking it.

If this happens the casualty will not be able to breathe. If the casualty was sick it could also block their airway.

To help the casualty Gracie needs to turn them onto their side and lift their chin.

Step 1

First of all she kneels next to the casualty, and moves the arm closest to her and puts it at 45 degrees like in the picture (it is easier to roll the casualty towards you, if they have glasses on remove them)

Step 2

Next Gracie lifts the leg on the opposite side (if the casualty is wearing trousers it is easy to pull on the material to lift the knee, the foot will fall to the floor) she takes hold of the other hand and puts it on the side of the casualty’s face.

Step 3

Can you see how Gracie is pulling on the leg to turn the casualty over? It is easy to turn someone this way. Gracie is careful to hold the head as she turns him over.

Step 4

Now he has been rolled onto his side Gracie first of all tips his head back to keep his airway open and then bends his leg to support the weight of his body.

Step 5

Once in the recovery position Gracie can check to see if he is still breathing and call the emergency services to tell them she has an unconscious casualty.

How to do CPR If someone is not breathing they have to have CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitiation) [Kar-dee-o-pul-muh-nairee rih-suh-sih-tay-shun] performed upon them. CPR will help the casualty but does not restart the heart, so a defib is needed.

Learning to do CPR is not easy, you might need to read this page several times, or even ask an adult to help you understand.

If you find someone who has collapsed, we need to find out if they are breathing. If we stop breathing for more than 3 minutes brain cells might die. We need our brain cells to be working to allow us to do normal everyday things.

First of all we need to make sure it is safe to help the casualty.

If you can see hazards or dangers do not go closer, get help.

The casualty will try to reply, they might try to move or open their eyes. If they seem to be in a deep sleep and do not reply SHOUT for help, but do not leave them yet.

A

Open their airway

When we go unconscious all our muscles relax. Your tongue is a large muscle. It is attached to the jaw and goes into the throat. The bit you can usually see is the small part of the tongue. If a casualty is on their back the tongue can fall back as it relaxes and block the airway Put your hand on the casualty’s forehead, tilt the head. Put 2 fingers under the casualty’s chin and lift the chin. This lifts the tongue off the airway and allows to casualty to have a clear airway.

Check to see if the casualty is breathing.

Keeping the airway open, look, listen and feel to see if the casualty is breathing.

Look down their chest and tummy, is it moving? At the same time listen to see if you can hear any breaths. Can you feel breath on your face? Check for 10 seconds (count slowly to 10) If the casualty is breathing put them into the recovery position.

If the casualty is not breathing call 999 (put the phone on loudspeaker, 112 also works) and shout for a defib.

Give 30 chest compressions To do this lock your hands together and press in the centre of the casualty’s chest (this will not hurt the casualty and could save their life). You will need to lean over the casualty, keeping your arms stiff (don’t allow your elbows to bend). Press down deep, about 5 to 6 cm. Think of the song “twinkle twinkle little star” that is the rhythm that you need to press on the chest. Give 30 compressions.

Next try to breathe for them. Open the airway again, pinch the nose (so air can’t escape) open your mouth wide and put your mouth over the casualty’s and blow into their mouth twice.

Then continue to give 30 compressions and 2 breaths until help arrives.

If you can’t give the breaths just continue with the chest compressions.

If all 3 points of the triangle of survival take place, the casualty stands a much better chance of surviving.

y d o b r u o y e d i s In Humans may look different on the outside but inside we have the same organs and they all do some important jobs

Lungs Brain Your brain is the control centre of your body.

It is in the skull. Your brain stores information, allows you to think and learn, it controls things like digestion, heart rate and breathing. The brain is so important, but it also very delicate.

The brain is made of soft tissue and is only protected by the skull, which is why head injuries can be so serious.

Heart Your heart is the size of your fist and is in the centre of your chest just tilted towards the left. It is a hollow, muscular organ that pumps blood through the blood vessels by contracting repeatedly.

The heart’s job is to pump oxygenated blood throughout your body and receive deoxygenated blood back in return. Without your heart, your other organs would not receive oxygen or have carbon dioxide removed.

You use your lungs to breathe.

When you breathe in you pull oxygen into the lungs. This goes into the blood and is carried around our body. When we breathe out our lungs exhale carbon dioxide. Your lungs are two sponge-like, cone-shaped organs that fill most of your chest and are protected by your rib cage.

Liver

Blood Vessels There are three kinds of blood vessels: arteries, veins, and capillaries. The main job of your blood vessels is to carry blood through the body. Blood carries oxygen, nutrients, and waste that need to move around the body. The arteries carry blood away from the heart once it has become oxygenated and transport it to the rest of the body. The veins carry blood back to the heart from the body so it can collect more oxygen.

Your capillaries are the smallest of the blood vessels. When you graze yourself it is the capillaries that bleed. The veins and arteries are deeper inside the skin.

Your liver is your largest internal organ!

The liver is on the right side of the stomach beneath the diaphragm. The liver is a busy organ and has several jobs.

It produces bile to help you to digest food. Your liver filters toxins to stop us becoming poisoned. It releases sugar into the blood and gives us energy.

The liver also breaks down fats.

Your kidneys are two bean-shaped organs located under the ribcage in your lower back, one on each side of the spine. Their function is to maintain the body’s chemical balance by filtering waste products and excess fluid. This is called urine.

The kidneys also help to regulate your blood pressure.

WHAT IS A Defibrillator?

The correct name for a defibrillator is an Automated External Defibrillator (or-tow-may-ted ex-tur-nul dee-fib-ril –ay-tur) or AED, it is often just called a defibrillator or a defib for short.

There are many different types ofdo defibs but they all the same job

The defib will have a pouch with 2 sticky pads inside, they will have a picture on to show that you need to go onto skin, not on clothes.

If someone is not breathing they have to have CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitiation) performed upon them. CPR will help the casualty but does not restart the heart, so a defib is needed.

The defib will talk to you when you turn it on. Some turn on when the lid is opened, sometimes you have to press the “on” button. It tells you what to do and it will only give a shock to someone if they need one. YOU WILL NOT SHOCK YOURSELF, all you have to do is listen to the instructions.

Remember:

e by using a defib on them.

- You are not able to hurt someon they need a defib.

- If the casualty is not breathing only if we remember to use - The defib can save a life but them.

To press the flashing button if a shock is needed (some may do this for you).

To do CPR if needed. It will also tell you how to do this.

What type of protective clothing should you wear before touching blood?

Sometimes when we fall over we might cut our knees, hands or head. Often these wounds are just grazes and will just need to be rinsed with water and patted dry around the edges before putting a plaster onto the graze.

Wounds that are deeper might need to be stitched or glued at the hospital. To treat a deeper wound we need to press onto the wound. This pressure will help by stopping the blood from escaping, if it can’t escape the blood will start to clot.

Look carefully at the wound before you start to put the pressure on just in case there is something stuck inside the wound. If there is something stuck, do not put pressure on.

A sterile dressing (found in your first aid kit) would be the best thing to put onto the wound. Wrap the bandage around quite tight to keep the pressure on, tie a knot to stop it from unwrapping (if you can’t tie a knot, tuck the ends in)

If there is blood coming through the dressing when you have tied it, take another dressing and tie it over the last one.

Have you ever felt dizzy?

If someone feels dizzy it is usually because the brain is not getting enough oxygen.

When this happens their skin will usually get paler, they might start to shiver, feel sick and cold but also sweat.

We call this feeling faint!

People can be dizzy for other reasons, for example if they lose a lot of blood, this can be more serious than a faint but can look the same.

Casualties need to lay down and have their legs raised to allow the blood and fluid in the legs to flow back towards the heart so it can be pumped to the brain.

Most broken bones happen from a fall or while playing sport. Broken bones are also called fractures. There are many different types of fracture. Sometimes it is difficult to know if the bone is broken.

It may hurt, there also might be swelling and bruising. The injured area may be hard to move and use. Sometimes the body part looks crooked or different than it did before the injury.

Do not move a part of the body that you think might be broken. The only way to find out for sure is for it to be x-rayed at hospital.

Burns can hurt a lot more!

Burns can be caused by electricity, fire, hot fluid, chemicals and even the cold.

Make sure you and the person who is hurt are safe.

Ask them what happened Check that their breathing has not been affected The skin will very quickly go red and may get blisters.

The casualty will be in a lot of pain.

If they are wearing jewellery ask them to remove it because the skin may start to swell.

DO NOT remove anything that is stuck to the burn.

• Use cool running water to cool the burn for at least 10 minutes. Water from a tap is good, run the water gently, not fast.

• If there is no tap, pour water carefully or put a clean, cool wet cloth on the burnt area of skin.

• After cooling, cover the area with cling film or a new plastic bag.

• Look at the burn, if it is bigger than a large coin they will need to go to the doctors.

• If the burnt area is bigger than the size of their hand they need to go to hospital.

Have you heard of epilepsy?

It’s just a word that means seizures.

Seizures can last a few minutes or even just a few seconds.

They are caused by the brain having too much electricity released. We all have electricity in our body, usually the brain controls it but for people with epilepsy sometimes it all goes wrong.

There are lots of different types of seizures. One kind makes you stop and stare, another makes you do things as if you were doing them in your sleep and another kind makes you fall to the floor and shake all over.

Usually the person does not know what is happening. It is as if they are asleep. It can be scary if you have never seen a seizure before.

Don’t worry!

• Move things out of the way so they don’t get hurt.

• If they are bumping their head put something soft underneath.

• Try to time how long they are having a seizure.

• When they have stopped shaking, put them into the recovery position.

If it lasts longer than 5 minutes or they have more seizures or get hurt, call 999.

DON’T WASTE TIME, THEY WILL FEEL AS THOUGH THEY CAN’T BREATHE! Step 1

OH NO! THE CASUALTY IS CHOKING, WHAT SHALL WE DO? If you notice that someone is choking, it could be a large object that has stuck in the throat, it could be fully blocking the airway or it might have blocked part of the airway.

Step 2

Tell them to cough for as If they can’t cough, ask them to lean long as they can. forward and hit them between their shoulders, if it doesn’t come out straight COUGH away hit up to 5 times (you will need to hit them hard, this might loosen it so the casualty can cough it out).

5 Back Blows

Step 3

If it still hasn’t come out, go behind the casualty and wrap your arms around their tummy try to hold your hands together.

Make sure your hands are just above the belly button.

Now pull in and up hard, up to 5 times. Check to see if the object has come out after each one.

5 Abdominal Thrusts

REPEAT STEPS 2 AND 3 UNTIL THE CASUALTY CLEARS THE OBJECT OR UNTIL THEY COLLAPSE. IF THEY COLLAPSE CALL 999 TO GET EMERGENCY HELP. AND FOLLOW THE DR ABC PLAN

Professor Bones, the headmaster at Learnalot School, asked Defib Deb to come into school and explain what a defibrillator was. The school had just bought a defibrillator.

Some pupils and teachers were worried and unsure of what it was and how it worked.

Defib Deb was happy to teach the children and wanted to show them how easy it was to follow the DRABC plan. She told the children about the triangle of survival and how 3 things (999, CPR and Defibrillation) needed to happen to give a casualty who was not DR ABC MAGAZINE breathing the best chance of surviving.

Next Deb showed the children how easy it was to use the defib. She asked for volunteers and told them: “You can’t do any damage by using it on a casualty who is not breathing.” Oscar and Lilly were the first to volunteer.

The children were keen to show they had been listening carefully and had remembered.

Lilly put the pads on to the manikin, Oscar was ready to press the button and Gracie was pretending to make a call to the emergency services. The rest of the children shouted out support. Deb reminded them that giving CPR was also very important.

Mr Beat teaches PE and has an after school club, where the children take part in different sports. Oscar, Lilly and their friends enjoy going to club. Mr Beat makes sure everyone can join in and have fun. He tells the children they can achieve more by being part of a team. They like working together.

As they are about to play a game Mr Beat starts to sweat, he suddenly feels unwell, he has a pain in his chest, and it feels as though he is being crushed. After just a few minutes Mr Beat falls...

Co me lou in r The children quickly realise the situation is serious. They follow the DR ABC plan and find that Mr Beat is not breathing. Oscar takes charge, he sends one of his friends to call 999, he sends another to find an adult. He knows that Do it all Dan, the caretaker, should be close by.

When Do it all Dan arrives he has no idea what to do. Oscar tells him that Mr Beat is not breathing. Do it all Dan thinks he must have had a heart attack. The children thought that Dan would take control but he was in shock. The children became worried. Then they realised they knew what to do.

Oscar sends Lilly to get the Defib. He said: “It is just like we practiced so don’t panic.

Remember Mr Beat said it is good to work as a team. Also Deb said we need to follow the triangle of survival.”

Now Dan could see the children knew what to do. Oscar explained it would be better if Dan tried to do the chest compressions because he would have more strength.

Lilly quickly returned with the defibrillator.

Lilly was keen to put the pads onto Mr Beat, she was glad she had volunteered earlier.

She knew the defib would not hurt Mr Beat and that it would only give him a shock if he needed one. Do it all Dan was impressed and a little bit embarrassed that the children seemed more capable than him.

When It was time to give Mr Beat a shock Do it all Dan became worried again, he wondered if they should wait for an ambulance to arrive. The children reassured him that they needed to press the flashing button. There was not time to explain everything to Dan. Defib Deb had said you need to act fast!

Oscar’s friend returned to say the ambulance was on its way. As soon as he heard this Dan stopped panicking. He continued to give chest compressions.

By the time the paramedics arrived Mr Beat had started to wake up. Paramedic Pete told Dan how well he had done and that Mr Beat was alive because he had followed the DR ABC plan. CPR had been performed and the defib had been collected quickly and used quickly too.

Dan did not want to take the praise. He knew who the real heroes were. He said all the children had been calmer than him. It was Lilly and Oscar who had managed to convince him that they knew what to do and he should help them. Oscar said, “But Dan you were a part of our team!� Paramedic Pete was quick to say well done to the children. It always makes his job easier if someone helps.

Professor Bones was so proud of the children that he held a special assembly in honour of Oscar and Lilly. Defib Deb came along and presented them with life saving certificates, Do it all Dan got one too. Deb was very proud of what they had achieved.

Do it all Dan wanted to speak to Defib Deb. He said he really wanted to attend a first aid course, he had felt very scared and wanted to make sure if any accidents happened he would act as calmly as the children had. Defib Deb was pleased to be able to teach him too. She said the more people who know first aid the better, you never know when someone’s heart is going to miss a beat!
