A reuse of a Cold War Era Atlas F Missile Silo, in Seward, Nebraska, as a testing facility for arctic ice drilling equipment. An “Ice Tube,” descending 150’ deep into the silo, is able to emulate ice and sediment conditions for ice drill testing. Fabrication and laboratory space are also housed in the same facility.

The existing launch control center (LCC) is completely excavated, and the silo is partially excavated. This allows for the structures to be exposed for viewing within the new building. The LCC and Silo become sculptural focal points within the building, and influence internal organization of the space.

The programming of the tower is organized sectionally. This creates a gradient of public to private spaces, with the most publicly accessible space, retail, at the base of the building, cultural and office in the middle, and residential on the top floors.

The threshold space between the two facades is activated and allows users to occupy it.
