What is Focus Night? The Basics The DSE Focus Night, Fokusaften in danish, is an anually event which comprises of several evenings. Each has its own theme with 3 to 4 visiting companies. The themes for this years Focus Night: • • • • • •

Management & Consulting Mechanical Engineering Software Engineering Civil Engineering Chemical Engineering Oil & Gas

During these evening events the companies will give two informative presentations lasting for about an hour each. DSE provides the unique opportunity for you to hear two different companies. After the presentations, there will be a buffet which is free of charge for all students who have signed up in advance for the Focus Night. The buffet is a perfect way for you to network with the visiting companies in an informal setting.

Relevant for everyone No matter at what stage you are in your education, the Focus Night is well worth your time. Whether you are a newly started engineering student or a graduate, the Focus Night is a good occasion to learn more of the daily work within some of the largest engineering companies located in Denmark and abroad. Here you might network your way into a great position in a profilating engineering company, or to commence a project collaboration with your favorite company.

Be Prepared At the Focus Night all students are looking for the same thing. To get the companies’ attention it is important to prepare as much as possible prior to the event. Each company offers different opportunities for students and graduates. In order to keep track of it all, DSE has made a compilation of categories, which each company has filled out. Thereby making it clear what kind of work they can provide to you. The categories are: • • • • •

Bring your CV and your grade sheet A CV and a grade sheet give a quick overview of your capabilities and experiences along with your academic performance. The Pejling 2013 catalog, which is found around campus, provides a detailed guide for writing a perfect CV.

Study the companies that you are interested in The first impression is crucial! Study the companies before attending the Focus Night. This way the companies will see you as a serious candidate when talking to you.

The People Behind Focus Night is arranged by DSE (De Studerendes Erhverskontakt), which is an entirely voluntary student organization with about 100 members, divided between two divisions with offices located in Lyngby and Aalborg. Most of the members are engineering students. As an organization, DSE offers you both benefits and challenges during your time as a student. As a member you can meet representatives from leading engineering companies, which will help you establish a professional network. As a member of DSE, you have an abundance of opportunities to experience planning and management of major events hands on.

Are you creative? Do you want to make events for career fairs, or design catchy posters? At DSE we are always open to new, creative ideas, and we can help you turn them into reality. At DSE you can learn about marketing in a first hand approach. DSE advertises for its fairs and events through its website, catalogs and through publicity events. But DSE is not only Benificial for your future career. It is an organization which broadens your social network. DSE creates the framework for a large range of social events – both events for all DTU students and events within the organization. If you would like to be a part of DSE, drop by the DSE office in the Student Center in Building 101E on the top floor.


Present Your Project As a new initiative this year, DSE invites you to present your school projects at the Focus Night. If you have a project, relevant to one of our Focus Nights, we strongly encourage you to submit it. Get the opportunity to show what you can do, to the companies you want to work for. What you need To be considered for presenting your project, it must be presented in one or more of the following forms: • • •

A poster presentation A physical product A video / interactive presentation on a laptop

Your advantage As the companies most often arrive early to prepare their sessions, DSE allow the students presenting projects to set up at the same time. This way you have some extra time in the beginning to get all their attention. It is an opportunity for you to stand out from the rest, given that all the companies will be specialized in YOUR field of work.

Focus Night “On Tour” Focus Night ”On Tour” is our newest event created in collaboration with IDA (Ingeniørforeningen Danmark). Focus Night “On Tour” takes you to the company’s worksite to meet them in their own work environment. This gives you the opportunity to obtain a more geniune understanding of the company’s internal work routines than a regular Focus Night. The company will aim to organizing a night that will be fruitful for the participating students as well as the company itself.

Focus Night “On Tour” will take place the week after the regular Focus Nights (week 41). The event will start at 17:15 in front of building 101, entrance B on DTU Lyngby Campus, where a bus will take us to the company’s location. On arrival we will have about three hours to learn more about the company and see what they have to offer. This is a unique opportunity to discover your future workplace or to get a hint of what it is like to work as an engineer. At the end of the event the bus will return to DTU Lyngby Campus.

This year our Fokus Night “On Tour” will go to 3Shape – Leading 3D Scanning specialists. Read more about the company at page 16.
