at 64th Street and Park Avenue in Manhattan Proceeds from the evening will be directed to the Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation. Improving the treatment, quality of life and the long-term outlook for children and families affected by a brain or spinal cord tumor.

Message from the Foundation Dear Friends,

All of this and more was possible only because of you.

Last year, Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation marked 30 years in the fight against pediatric brain and spinal cord tumors. This year, with nary a pause in our momentum, we gather again with you, our unfaltering compatriots, to keep the fight going. Generous with your time, your money, your love and energy, no cause could have better allies and no scourge fiercer opponents. We gather for this 17th Annual Dream & Promise Awards Benefit to celebrate the successes of the previous year by gathering the funding needed to make this year even better. With you by our side, we have no doubt new treatments, new care and new survivors await. In its 31-year history, Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation has raised $10.5 million for scientific grants and over $650,000 for professional training and clinical fellowships in pediatric neuro-oncology. The money we raise is essential, for our enemy is strong. The deadliest childhood cancer, pediatric brain and spinal cord tumors attack nearly 5,000 children each year. The tumors are insidious, often misdiagnosed, mimicking the symptoms of other ailments, destroying in secret. A full third of children diagnosed with tumors will not survive more than five years. Where the tumors don’t take lives, they steal childhoods and even futures. In 2009, CBTF, with funding from Licensing International (formerly LIMA), created the Children’s Brain Tumor Tissue Consortium. Partnered with 16 member institutions around the globe, it remains the largest tumor biorepository in the world. Last year, CBTTC launched the Pediatric Brain Tumor Atlas, a never-before-possible open-access, collaborative and cloud-based database of more than 2,500 childhood brain tumor samples. This May, more datasets were added and more will follow. What this accomplishment means for accelerated discovery is tremendous.

This evening you will meet a few special allies, like you, dedicated to finding the cure. We are proud to honor Bernadine R. Donahue, MD, Vice Chairman and Clinical Director of the Department of Radiation Oncology, Maimonides Cancer Center; Clinical Associate Professor for the Department of Radiation Oncology, NYU Langone Health; and Clinical Associate Professor at Downstate Medical Center, with the Pioneer Award for Radiation Oncology. A one-woman vanguard pairing the latest technology with the most personal treatment, Dr. Donahue has set the gold standard for patient care.

Dedicated to fueling the discoveries filling this atlas, in 2018 CBTF awarded CBTTC member Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia $150,000, and awarded $75,000 each to researchers at Boston’s Children’s Hospital, Children’s National Health System and Seattle Children’s Hospital. Because care is as essential as research, Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation revamped its website allowing for faster access connecting parents and children to the information and care communities they need. CBTF’s signature program, the Family-2-Family Network, launched a sibling mentor program, adding a new dimension to our work connecting trained parent, survivor, and sibling mentors with families in need. This summer will see the further addition of online support groups for the parents of younger children and new face-to-face programs in Colorado, Illinois and Ohio. As our online programs grow, so do our in-person offerings. Last year’s included Adolescent and Teen Adventures and Meet Ups in Boston, Philadelphia, New Jersey and New York. We sponsored the 5th Annual Just Us Retreat, the only father/ survivor retreat in the country, and, with Camp-Mak-A-Dream, held three, six-day Heads Up Conferences, the only week-long conference in the United States addressing the needs of brain tumor survivors.

Our Dream & Promise Award recipient, Viscogliosi Brothers, LLC, has been a constant and generous supporter of Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation. Charitable work is part of their overall mission to finance newer and better services and technology for the medical community. Their contributions have allowed for startling innovations in the tools needed to fight pediatric brain and spinal cord tumors, among many other previously unmet clinical needs. Integral to this event for many years, their support has indeed helped dreams come true and promises be met.

Without people willing to freely give themselves to the cause, an event of tonight’s magnitude could never happen. Such people are our event Co-Chairs, Joseph Chan, Stephen Downey, Sravan K. Emany, Stuart M. Essig, PhD, Robert Millham, Dan Reuvers, Joseph P. Riccardo, Jr., Craig M. Robertson, Steven Scebelo, and Anthony G. Viscogliosi. Michele G. Buck, President and CEO of The Hershey Company and a loyal former co-chair of this event, has also helped in myriad ways. We thank you deeply for what you’ve done. What happens tonight will set the stage for another year of Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation’s crucial work. Every donation brings relief to another parent collapsing under the weight of grief, light to another child lost in the shadow of fear. Together let us be lifters of weight and bringers of light, that next year we may meet again with even more to celebrate. Sincerely, Lionel Leventhal Board Chairman Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation

Such worthy proceedings demand a worthy host and Arielle Jacobs more than meets the criteria. An accomplished actress and singer, she currently stars as Princess Jasmine in the smash-hit Broadway musical, Aladdin. Ms. Jacobs made her debut starring opposite Lin-Manuel Miranda in the final cast of In The Heights and has since established herself as Broadway royalty. Recently releasing her debut solo album, we are honored to have her lead the evening and perhaps even offer a bit of song.

Message from the Benefit Co-Chairs Dear Friends, The invitation to join Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation in their important work is a gift, and by your presence tonight we know you feel the same way. 31 years strong, the Foundation has changed the face of pediatric brain and spinal cord tumor care, delivering on a promise to bring advancements where they were rare and hope where despair ruled. What was an unwavering death sentence when the Foundation began, now is more often survivable in large part because of this organization, obstinate in the face of despair. With nearly 5,000 children and teens diagnosed with brain and spinal cord tumors every year, with a full third of them gone within five years of diagnosis, with over 28,000 survivors in the United States alone fighting to find normal in a world for so many years foreign to them, with families swimming in grief and others praying for the advancements necessary to save their children, such obstinance requires an army. Generous beyond words, you are that army. Tonight, we celebrate Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation, cheer for the children and families refusing to let despair cloud their hearts and give all we can to disperse the darkness. We celebrate what you’ve done by giving you the chance to do more, because we know this is what you want.

Born in New York, Dr. Donahue attended the Bronx High School of Science and received her BA/MD from Boston University’s six-year medical program. She followed this with an Internal Medicine internship and residency at Boston University Medical Center. During her residency, Dr. Donahue spent a great deal of time with her patients in the Radiation Oncology area, encouraging them through treatment and even transporting them back and forth. This hands-on, full-care approach would inspire the trajectory of Dr. Donahue’s career and define the patient-first philosophy essential to her work. Excited by the advancements happening in oncology, Dr. Donahue returned to New York where she was a Radiation Oncology resident, and then Chief Resident at NYU Medical Center. At NYU, she became involved in the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group and the Children’s Oncology Group, NCI-designated national cooperative groups running trials to study patients with brain tumors and pediatric tumors, in the process discovering one of the central focuses of her career. In 2005, Dr. Donahue became Attending Physician at Maimonides Medical Center and Clinical Director of Radiation Oncology at Maimonides Cancer Center. Seven years later, she was named Vice-Chairman of Radiation Oncology.

Among the many committees Dr. Donahue has served and continues to serve on, nothing could be more natural than Dr. Donahue’s position as Co-Director for the Committee of Mutual Respect at MMC. Her philosophy from the start, she treats patients holistically, watching out for them socially as well as medically, and recognizing, as she says, “that it must be an overwhelming experience to just even walk into the building.” Her respect for the dignity of her patients is the north star she has followed through every step of her impactful career. Throughout, Dr. Donahue has maintained regular presence in the classroom, further testimony to her dedication as stalwart fighter for patient well-being, training new generations to work with the same enthusiasm and compassion as she does. Clinical Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology at NYU School of Medicine and author of over 50 publications plus book chapters, abstracts and editorials, Dr. Donahue is both blazing trails and leading others up them. Technological expert and developer, fierce researcher, consummate educator, and patient advocate, Bernadine R. Donahue, MD, is truly a pioneer.

Childhood Brain and Spinal Cord Tumor Fact Sheet Brain and spinal cord tumors remain the deadliest childhood cancer, despite decreases in overall cancer death rates since the early 1990s. Nearly 5,000 brain and spinal cord tumors are diagnosed each year in children and teens. • Roughly one-third of children diagnosed with a brain tumor will not survive beyond five years. • Brain tumors are often difficult to diagnose because their signs and symptoms may mimic those of other disorders. Symptoms may appear in an emergency situation followed by surgery within 24 hours.

There are over 28,000 brain tumor survivors alive today in the United States. Survivorship is a relatively new phenomenon, and many survivors are just reaching adulthood now. • Surviving a brain tumor doesn’t mean the child is “home free.” In fact, brain tumor survivors often face not only on-going medical challenges, but physical, cognitive and emotional changes. • Young adult survivors are five times more likely to be unemployed than other childhood cancer survivors.
