compare our chapter with others. Consistently California Orange County Chapter has excelled

other chapters have worked through them. But even more fascinating is the opportunity to in best practices and member participation. And I’m happy to say folks; we still got it!

It was also exciting to get a taste of the accomplishments achieved at the National level from our CEO, Randy Fiser and from the National Chair, Charrisse Johnston. ASID leads the design

One Room

WAYS

By Patricia Bryson, Allied ASID

This year, we gave you 12 chances and an entire year to be impressed by design creations produced by ASID’s talented designers at Stonemill Design Center. You came, got inspired, and found many new resources and showrooms that you could use for your next projects. Congratulations to Elisabeth D’Angelo for garnering the People’s Choice award. Over 1,700 votes were submitted for this competition, and Elisabeth as the winner will be featured in an upcoming issue of Modern Luxury Magazine. When you unleash 12 designers (design teams) and let them go wild at Stonemill Design Center and pull all of their professional vendor connections, you can expect a confetti of different designs. It was as if we went on a vacation each time as the designers transported us to a barrage of destinations. One Room 12 Ways debuted with Angela Eason’s taste of The big Easy and the band in tow. Kaleidoscope of colors flooded our visual cortex, thanks to Adriel Cogdal’s striking design. Karina Rizzo treated us to a swanky 1960’s luxury suite. Who needs a time machine when you have talented designers? Just when you were too busy to get away for a vacation Lucia Henry and Lisa Volkov’s space reminded us that we live in a vacation capital of the world. Lake front vacation home was not complete without ingenious indoor-outdoor living created by Joanna Barker. Imaginative collages photography on the accent wall and see-through bookshelves gave a statement for Anna-Marie Claassen’s room. Creatively divided functional spaces took cues from Alice in Wonderland for Lauri Howell’s magical space. Elisabeth D’Angelo’s study in contrast for black and white struck people’s nerve to win the favorite space for the year. Miko Krisvoy and Linda Tom showed us how to layer luxurious champagne golden hues to create rhythm of autumn. If you wanted to capitalize OM in you home, all you needed was Raad Ghantous, as he anchored the space with a cocooning lounge chair. Kathy Booker convinced us that the future of the electric desk could be chic and fit into any setting. Nazgol Seyedi’s knitted wall and illustrated flooring transformed the space with airy whimsy amidst serious art display. As I look back at this 12-month marathon, I am grateful for the leadership of our Chair, Miko Krisvoy, as well as tremendous support from both ASIC OC past president, Jamie Namanny and current president, Adriel Cogdal. None of this would have been possible without the hard work of Cathryn DeFazio of Stonemill Design Center and diligent promotional support from Andrew Stoermer of Modern Luxury Orange County. One Room 12 Ways has showcased many wonderful showrooms at Stonemill Design Center. This event has become a catalyst to further strengthening our design community for years to come.

President Elect’s Letter

students and design industry partners,

Summer is here and believe it or not, we are half way through our term, and we are soon

opening the Design Awards submissions. As you know, ASID OC Design Awards is always

anonymously judged by designers from other chapters. This year our Design Awards team is trying to lock down a group of celebrity designers, educators, and established ASID designers from other chapters to judge the awards. They are adding more categories for

your various projects, and like always, the winners will be announced at the ASID OC Design Awards and Installation Gala, which will take place on Sunday September 17th.

The new ASID fiscal year will start on October 1st, and I am honored and humbled to start

my term as your chapter president. Thanks to those of you who participated in the voting process, we are going to have a dynamic board and have already started the strategic planning for the upcoming year. If you would like to be involved in your chapter’s strategic

planning, or have any questions, suggestions, or constructive criticism, please don’t hesitate to email, call, or text me personally.

We, at the ASID OC office, are doing our best to make the chapter one of the strongest

in the nation, and we kindly ask for your support. Please come to our events and show your love to the industry partners that sponsor these events.

I wish you all a beautiful summer and hope to meet every single one of you in person at our numerous events! Warmest regards, Nazgol Seyedi, Allied ASID

Build Your Brand with Mindstream Studio Now in OC Brands continue to move further away from direct advertising, in response to increased opportunity in creating original video content designed to engage your target customer. With short form video, you can tell your story, reach new customers, and forge brand loyalty. Mindstream Studio, a new digital production house based in Irvine, California provides full-service video, audio, social media and website services that empowers thought leaders, brands, and individuals to effectively promote themselves in the modern digital world through video. You may be thinking, “What is short form video?” Short form video is between on average, 3 to 5 minutes and seeks not only to inform, but to entertain and engage the viewer as well. “These days you don’t see people looking forward to the next episode of their favorite TV show (Netflix killed that),” said Lee Decker, Creative Director at Mindstream Studio. “You see them waiting for their favorite Youtuber to release their next vlog.” Mindstream Studio also hosts and produces its own shows, Crowdfunding Voice, The Gadget Show and others which have garnered over 500,000 YouTube views in the past month alone. It’s no secret, YouTube is owned by Google and because of this fact, video content is extremely important if you want to rank highly on Google. You no longer have to travel to LA, San Diego, or San Francisco to get amazing original video content.

- 8 - SUMMER 2017 | CA ORANGE COUNTY CHAPTER

Mindstream Studio is situated across from Orange County’s John Wayne Airport in the heart of Irvine’s tech hub at 18004 Sky Park Circle. The first-of-its-kind production studio in Orange County will feature a tech review set, a kitchen set, a beauty/lifestyle set, a talk show set, and a green screen set to serve creators across all genres and serve as a major destination for innovative video content creation. The planned 7,200 sq. ft. production hub will feature 5 studio sets, editing lab, creative services, sales and staging areas dedicated to filming, editing and producing online video content. “Video receives exponentially greater views and likes on social media, from 10 to 1,000 times more engagement than static posts, especially if an influencer is involved,” said Mark Thimming, Founder and Executive Producer of Mindstream Video. “Advertisers are looking to these influencers to tap into more powerful direct-response networks.” The new studio build-out will support Mindstream’s growing network of creator collaborations, brand promotions, thought leaders and original productions. The new space is under development now. Video shooting is available in 3 existing studios, with the larger full build-out in process to be completed in the second quarter of 2017. “TV changed our lives, heck it changed the world, said Thimming. “ What’s more exciting today is what short form video is doing for brands. It’s just the best bang for your buck.”

IP Forum 2017 AT THE LAGUNA DESIGN CENTER By: Celeste Lehman Director at Large We hosted our first IP Forum of 2017 in February at the Laguna Design Center. We held roundtable discussions, with a mix of

designers and Industry Partners at each table. The topics discussed,

ranged from marketing your business to gaining designers business,

getting more involved in the chapter and creating more collaboration with designers and Industry Partners. When our board was planning

our strategic goals for 2017 and identifying meetings, the underlying theme of the year was collaboration. We want to build a strong

organization of Industry Partners & designers coming together to use each others services.

My goal for the first IP Forum was to give our Industry Partners an opportunity to hear directly from the designer, what the designer

looks for when identifying a vendor to work with, marketing to the design community as a whole and learning about other IP’s businesses in the room. If you didn’t get a chance to check it out,

please be sure to join us for our Summer IP Forum. We hope to build upon our last Forum and keep the discussions going.

“Every Thing You Must Know About Automated Window Covering Options"

By Laura Yorba, Allied ASID Lunch & Learn Chair On Jan 31, 2017, ASID OC hosted the Second Lunch & Learn of the 2016-2017 Fiscal Year. The program was held at Fashion Interiors, owned by Sid and Marjan Bastion, in their recently remodeled showroom, which beautifully showcased all of the products they sell. After a brief tour of their showroom, we grabbed our yummy box lunch and sat down for an amazing program, which was the latest look at the technology in the window covering world. Sid presented a comparison of several top vendors and their strengths and abilities in automated window coverings. After the program, there were great raffle prizes, as well as gift certificates for these automated shades. As always, Fashion Interiors gave back to the designers and answered many questions. If you need a knowledgeable staff to help you with your client’s automated needs, as well as any other window covering, please visit ASID OC’s Industry Partner, Fashion Interiors, 9561 Irvine Center Dr., Irvine, CA 92618, 949-788-9288.

INDUSTRY PROFILE

FIBER-SEAL STRIVES TO KEEP MATERIALS LOOKING THEIR BEST YEAR AFTER YEAR

In 1971, consumers were just beginning to embrace the concept of fabric protection. Fiber-Seal began offering a product that could be applied to fabrics, carpeting and rugs that would repel liquids and keep fibers cleaner longer without changing the color or texture. This was an innovation in itself, but Fiber-Seal took it one step further by providing a convenient way to get those great stain resistant products into homes by adding local service offices creating the Fabric Care System. This addition assured that for more difficult spots or stains, help was just a phone call away, at no additional charge. This unprecedented concept still rings true today, which is why homeowners, facility managers, and design professionals continue to partner with us in keeping their beautiful interior fabrics and carpeting looking their best, year after year. Fiber-Seal West was established in 1981 to service the Orange County area. Our motto is “Super Service, Smart Solutions. We strive every day to provide a service that is unparalleled by other fabric protection companies. A testament to our outstanding staff and trained technicians is the fact that many of our clients have been loyal to not only the Fiber-Seal protection, but also to our outstanding cleaning methods and attention to detail. To learn more about how we can help you or your clients, call us at 949.724.8155 or email us at Derek@fiberseal.com.

On February 15, 2017, the OC ASID iDOD meeting took place preceding the monthly meeting at Home Expressions Gallery. Janet S. Martin, Business and

Franchise Attorney spoke about LLC’s (Limited Liability Corporations) advantages and drawbacks to forming one for your business. The advantages are it’s easy to do, relatively inexpensive, and doesn’t require all the formalities associated

with corporations. Mainly, it’s for personal asset protection, and adding professionalism to your business. Consequently, it is not required to run your interior design business.

Overall, we had a great turnout. Thank you to Nichole Cooper and Kristina Bedoe at Home Expressions Gallery for their wonderful hospitality providing delicious

LEGISLATION

CCIDC ‘Sunset Review’ Update By: Beverly Stadler, ASID Legistlative Chair

In my last report, I shared the news that the Hoover Commission report will

Cabinetry Millwork Mouldings

positively influence the passage of the ‘Sunset Review’ process for CCIDC for another 4 years, maintaining our voluntary CID certification.

CCIDC presented their case to the Senate Business Professions Overseeing

Committee March 6, 2017, as the last of the professional committees to be reviewed for the day. Their primary issues were:

1) Acceptance of the CID stamp by building officials, and how to remedy lack of

acceptance in LA, San Francisco and San Jose, among other areas for nonstructural and non-seismic plans (allowable under exception #5538 AIA)

2) The proposed predecessor for Doug Stead, current president of CCIDC 3) Whether or not a separate ‘title’ act should be created to recognize interior designers (desired by ASID, IIDA and opposed by CCIDC)

We will utilize the current CID legislation as our vehicle to ultimately make this change, so we do want CCIDC’s sunset to be extended for 4 years until such time that we have a more receptive government in place in Sacramento.

KBIS/Las Vegas WRAP UP

The New Year kicked off with two of our biggest to-the-trade shows. First we were dazzled by the wide array of new products that were unveiled at KBIS, held this year in Orlando. The underlying theme behind the featured products, was the ability to create a customizable home. Designsavvy consumers now have the ability to make each space in their home completely personalized reflecting their tastes and lifestyle. The ability to integrate these customizable elements was seen throughout each vendors line of products, from cabinetry and glass doors, to appliances and fixtures. Next up was a trip to Las Vegas for the Winter Market. This was a feast for the eyes as more vendors than ever displayed their new lines of furnishings, casegoods, lighting and accessories. There were many different elements that could be seen throughout the showrooms, however some common themes included an under the sea color scheme featuring deep sea blues, lustrous greens and grounded purples. Matte metals and stone embellishments were standout features, as well as many vendors offering artist inspired pieces. These pieces showcased slight imperfections, and had a cozy, handmade feel to them. All in all, whether it was luxury and sophistication, or warmth and raw materials, this market featured products that connected with our senses on a multitude of levels.

February

MONTHLY MEETING By Lauri Howell, Allied ASID Programs Chair

Expressions Home Gallery was the host of our February Monthly Meeting, providing a wide range of vendors to learn product knowledge from, as well as food stations to indulge our appetites. Showroom manager, Kristina Bedoe, and Nicole Cooper planned a wonderful event, and allowed attendees to connect with everyone from Jenn-Air to Brizo enabling us to source the latest and greatest products for our upcoming projects. Selling Luxury was our featured topic for this event, presented by Jason McNeely of Hansgrohe. Here we learned the advantages of branding and showing the value of what things costs in order to reach a higher end market? Additionally, we learned what elements make a luxury brand, what type of consumers are buying them, and why. Following the conclusion of the presentation, ASID President Adriel Cogdal highlighted upcoming events and activities, and we took time to recognize our Industry Partners. Providing them the opportunity to introduce themselves to those in attendance, while highlighting products and services. This self-promotion allowed for members to connect with Industry Partners easily as we moved in to the final portion of our evening. The raffle was a success with a multitude of prizes, many lucky and grateful attendees were thrilled with their beautiful prizes. Our sincere thanks to our wonderful Industry Partner, Derek Fisher of FiberSeal, who managed the A/V for the presentation, as well as our two photographers for this event courtesy of Paul Fernandez of Paul Fernandez Interior Design and Jacklyn Manns of Cambria.
