Hello Everyone! We have much to celebrate with a new crop of graduates from Cañada College and West Valley College totaling 66! We at the Chapter, applaud each of you on your accomplishment and completion of your education! Congratulations to all of our Grads and their families! We invite all Graduates to take advantage of the Advancement to Allied Members. Be sure to go online and take advantage of the reduced pricing that is provided for all Graduates through their first five years of practice! June was full of excitement! The results of the Design Awards Competition were revealed at the 30th Annual Design Celebration hosted by our Chapter’s Silver Sponsor, Riggs Distributing in Burlingame! Huge kudos to all our competition winners for stepping up to the competition and placing this year! Congratulations and look for the spread in Gentry Magazine! The Awards Celebration and Design Competition were spearheaded by Denise A. Carey, ASID and Ann Flynn, Allied ASID who worked on both committees to produce a cohesive experience from the Judging Day through the date of the event on June 10th! I would like to offer tremendous accolades and appreciation to Denise and Ann, as well as, the whole committee, which made both events possible! The good news is we grew the competition from 19 to 40 entrants and winners this year! Now that is something to celebrate! The second week of June was focused on your right to vote as Chapter Members, I hope all of you or as many of you as possible, took advantage of this privilege and voted for your new board members! On June 19th the newly minted Board of Directors were off to the Chapter Leadership Conference (CLC) in Los Angeles, for extensive training, networking, and learning all wrapped up with a bit of fun! We are half way through the year and have some interesting things planned for the months ahead. Currently, we are researching the possibility of conducting some private tours of Hearst Castle, as well as, overnight lodging in Cambria and coordinating some fun and a Pre-Travel lecture/presentation with a “potential” CEU component! The time period we are researching is September 26-28! Stay tuned and respond to the Survey that is being circulated for your response! The Board has been working on many projects to fine tune our deliverables and expand our membership value to you, our members. If you are around this summer our next chapter meeting, titled Outdoor Kitchens, will be held on 6 pm on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at University Electric – mark your calendar and remind your friends! Very truly yours,
Teresa Rochin Pollard, ASID, IIDA, CID ASID CA Peninsula Chapter President 2013-2014

Three EASY Things YOU Can Do TODAY to Protect Your Right to Practice JOIN IDCC , BE INFORMED, RESPOND By Anna Harrison, ASID, LEED AP Who has time to worry about what’s going on in Sacramento when there are new clients calling and work piling up? With so many important things vying for our time and attention (like invoicing, aack!), it is understandable that PROTECTING our right to practice gets put on the back burner.
NO!!! GOOD NEWS AGAIN! You don’t have to because the IDCC does it for us! • Do you care about these things? Are you glad the IDCC is doing these on our behalf? Do you want to know how to do your part? YES!!! I’m so glad you asked!
Here’s the GOOD NEWS! You don’t have to worry about it because our Interior Design Coalition of California is on the job. The IDCC represents all of us California Interior Designers. The IDCC is our watchdog, (woof!), guarding the gates of the castle, so we can go about the business of improving the lives of our clients by doing what we do best. DESIGN!
Three EASY Things YOU Can Do TODAY to Protect Your Right to Practice.
• Do you have time to go to Sacramento and lobby our politicians on how our work affects the health, safety and welfare of our clients?
#1 – Join IDCC. It’s cheap and easy! The annual membership fee is $55 for professionals, $10 for students. www.z2systems.com/np/clients/idcc/membershipJoin.jsp
• Do you have time to meet with ASID Chapter Leaders, IIDA, CCIDC, CALBO, AIA, NKBA, and NARI, to develop a consensus and deliver a unified message? • Do you have time to research every piece of legislation that comes before lawmakers to ensure that our rights aren’t being violated or eroded?
JOIN IDCC, BE INFORMED, RESPOND
#2 – Get informed. How do you get informed? Visit the IDCC website. “Wait a minute! This is gonna happen anyway when I join right?” (I said these were easy didn’t I?) Familiarize yourself with SB 2192, the HOT issue of the day. www.idc-ca.org/idcc-news/templates/featured.aspx?articleid= 235&zoneid=22 #3 – Respond to CALLS to ACTION! When IDCC asks you to write a letter, make a call – DO IT! Our law makers need to hear from individuals not just our lobbyist. It makes a HUGE difference. That’s it. That’s really all we need to do. Easy right? Want more information? Check out the handy links below. And always feel free to call/text (408) 315-3270, or email me anna.harrison@wvm.edu. Now go out there, enjoy your right to practice, and BE AWESOME!

IN MEMORIAM
Ruth B. Sherman, ASID 1920 – 2014 By Mary Ann McEwan, ASID, CID, MBA Ruth Sherman, ASID, was a founding member of our Chapter, as well as a founding member of AID (Association of Interior Designers), which preceded it. She was a third generation native of San Francisco, and studied design in Paris just before WWII. She and her husband chose to settle down in the Peninsula, where she founded Ruth B. Sherman Interiors in Menlo Park. She aided in developing the first ASID business practices handbook, chaired the very first Stimulus Conference at Asilomar, and lectured at the University of California’s Interior Design Extension Program. Her sister Noyon described her as “a girl who always had an eye on how to go forward,” a frank and outspoken person with a great business acumen. Ruth is pre-deceased by her son John C. Morrison, Jr. and her daughter Marilyn (Morrison) Coleman, as well as by her husband John C. Morrison. She is survived by her sisters Noyon Berg and Jere Wadsorth; her children Roger Sherman II, Susan (Sherman) Tuttle, Michael S. Morrison, and William R. Morrison II; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Thank you, Ruth, for your many contributions to our profession and our chapter.

The West Valley ASID Chapter takes 3rd in National Competition The ASID Student Chapter Event of the Year award is a national award that highlights innovative programs developed primarily by and for ASID student chapters/members. The award is designed to recognize unique, productive, carefully conceived events that embrace basic interior design skills. We like to give a hearty congratulations to the West Valley College ASID Chapter for placing 3rd in the Nation for their Designer Sample Sale (DSS) event! The West Valley College Interior Design Club resurrected its largest fundraiser and one-day public sale, the Designer Sample Sale, on September 14, 2013, after nearly a decade. The DSS offered unique designer goods at discounted prices with participation from 20 merchants (55% ASID IPs) and five sponsors (40% ASID IPs). Proceeds benefited students and, for the first time, an annual scholarship has been established. The WVCIDC managed four booths and sold donated merchandise, as well as custom pillows made by students. Students’ class projects were also displayed to raise awareness of the Interior Design program. To enhance the experience while offering more value, gourmet food trucks and moving vans were on hand. With effective planning, proper strategies and the hard work of over 30 volunteers, the DSS grossed over $8,000 in funds to further the WVCIDC mission. Congratulations to everyone! We’re looking forward to this year’s sample sale on Sept. 14th.

REGREEN Implementation Workshop On Friday, April 25th our Chapter and Cosentino co-hosted a REGREEN Implementation Workshop at the beautiful Cosentino Center in South San Francisco. Seventeen designers spent the day studying the REGREEN curriculum with noted interior designer Annette Stelmack, Allied ASID, LEED AP BD+C, sustainable design consultant at Inspirit-IIc and co-author of Sustainable Residential Interiors. REGREEN is a set of sustainability best practices that emphasize green product selection, team integration, and whole-systems thinking. REGREEN was developed through a partnership of American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) to provide a guideline for sustainable design decisions and practices in the renovation process. In order to receive the REGREEN Trained Certificate, participants must complete 5 hours of online training and attend the all day Implementation Workshop.

Affirmative Response - Survey says..
Hearst Castle Here We Come
September 26-28, 2014
Earlier this month, we circulated a survey with questions surrounding a potential trip to Cambria and Hearst Castle, with a pre-trip lecture at a local Julia Morgan project in our chapter’s region. The overall interest was 80 members in favor of attendance and many of whom were interested in strolling through Cambria, discussing Julia Morgan’s work, over meals and tours. Our chapter’s professional development committee lead by Pierre Brule and Melinda Mandell are in the process of pulling together activity details. Package options will include: • Pre-lecture to trip - come hear about Julia, Hearts and more! • Coordination of private tours Hearst Castle with top guides and experts in their specific areas of Hearst Castle. • Meals in Cambria • Lodging in Cambria • Bus option or self drive sponsorship opportunities (contact chapter admin) Stay tuned - eblasts to follow with package information and registration. this weekend getaway is just what we need to coast into Cambria and have fundays away from work!

Technologies To Watch – The New TVs What could possibly be new with TVs? Visiting January’s Consumer Electronics Show, I was confronted with two new trends. Little did I suspect that they would hit the ground running by the middle of the year. These themes: ever larger screen sizes and Ultra HD TV, will cause designers to rethink past practices. I will outline the highlights of each trend and recommend approaches for overcoming the challenges. Let’s start with the extra-large TV issue which means displays larger than 65 inches. There are now 2 dozen models from 70 to 90 inches. I have been surprised at the number of clients who have initiated discussions about these uber displays, especially 80 inches. Suddenly, issues arise that didn’t previously exist. The biggest surprise was height. At first glance, this didn’t seem to be a big deal. However, consider that previously we were

The picture is more compelling than you can imagine, and prices are plummeting at lightning speed. Prices for a 60 inch display just dropped

Ultra HD is too new for documented design practices so expect to have your creativity challenged when your clients embrace this technology. Change is in the TV air. The best guidance I can offer is to anticipate it and have a trusted technology advisor to guide you through the challenges.
