Or maybe you want to teach a CEU but don't know how to become approved? ASID's Jennifer Davidson will explain the entire process! • What topics are appropriate to become CEUs • How to register with the IDCEC • How to submit your class for approval • How to get yourself approved to teach yours or any CEU • Best practices for teaching CEUs/hosting CEU events Many companies require their representatives and employees to perform educational outreach to clients, industry partners and other professionals. Organizations such as the ASID, IIDA, NKBA, AIA, NARI and USGBC require their members to obtain a minimum number of CEUs every year. At last, a 21st century technology designed for a more efficient home storage solution and improved home value. Auto-Lad is a fully electronically controlled ladder. At the press of a button or of a remote, it’s advanced circuit board allows the electronic unlatching of the panel, its opening, extending and de-energizing of the electric motor when Auto-Lad is fully extended. Depressing the same push button or remote allows retracting of AutoLad and when fully retracted, the closure of the panel and it’s automatic re-latching followed by the de-energizing of the electric motor. For high reliability and safety of operation, Auto-Lad has no position sensors but will stop if an obstacle is in it’s way. While designed for a typical attic space, this struc- turally superior and sophisticated operating ladder can also be used to substitute stairs in a loft to add privacy and additional room space below. Bonhams

Christine Skinner, Director of the monthly Period Art & Design auctions at Bonhams talks trends and tips In regards to auction buying trends, I've seen some dramatic changes recently. There's definitely been a return to traditional styles, in particular pieces that work well in a transitional space. Modern design is being replaced with a more relaxed, classic feel. People are looking at antiques and vintage to find quality, one-of-a-kind pieces that add warmth and character to their homes. The auctions that I'm involved in at Bonhams present a fantastic opportunity to find paintings, furniture, rugs, lighting and decorative accessories, many of which come from prominent Bay Area estates and properties. Most items are valued in the $500 - $3,000 range, making them extremely competitive when compared with buying contemporary pieces at retail. There are always amazing finds with fascinating provenance - we very often receive property from homes that have been styled by prominent Bay Area designers. My tips for first time buyers would be to keep an open mind. You are viewing items in a warehouse, so try to visualize what a piece may look like in a different

space. Also, remember that a piece can be easily updated with simple projects like replacing upholstery or changing out hardware. And a very important thing to note is that once you buy something, you cannot return it, so know what you are bidding on, check the condition and set your bidding limit. You can bid in person, by phone, by submitting absentee bids or bidding live online. 220 San Bruno Avenue, San Francisco 415.861.7500 For more information please visit www.bonhams.com

Fine Furniture Exhibition By Jeff Noblet The craftspeople from the College of the Redwoods Fine Woodworking program will be emerging from the wooded seclusion of the North Coast to let the entire Bay Area in on one of furniture making’s best-kept secrets. For over 30 years the school has quietly been shaping students into some of the finest furniture makers in the country. People come from all over the world to attend this intensive, nine hour a day, six day a week program, spending nine months in the small town of Fort Bragg obsessively dedicating themselves to quality and sensitivity in craft through the curriculum and values established by James Krenov. The program receives little in the way of fanfare or exposure outside of Mendocino County although it is well known in the woodworking community. At last summer’s Association of Woodworking and Furnishing Suppliers national convention in Las Vegas, students from the program won every category they entered in the AWFS Fresh Wood competition, in what Woodworker West magazine described as “a sweep.” Students from the program think it’s high time to let more people in on their well-kept secret. They believe the best way to do this is to let their work speak for itself. From May 23rd through the May 31st students from the program will host Handmade/Mindmade at the Dogpatch Café and Gallery, 2295 3rd Street in San Francisco, with a reception for industry professionals from 5-8pm on May 22nd. All of the work on display will be offered for sale.

VOLUME II • 2014 | CA NORTH CHAPTER

Actor, writer, and woodworker Nick Offerman, widely known for his role as Ron Swanson in the acclaimed NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation, describes furniture from the CR Fine Woodworking program as "a charismatic throwback to the days when hand-crafted quality commanded the respect it deserves, both for its practical strength as well as its enduring beauty. We could use a great many more golden American craftspeople such as them." Handmade/Mindmade Fine Furniture Exhibition Dogpatch Café and Gallery
