Modern Saltaire’s heritage is currently in question as it is presently advertised through the visual arts, but its rich history is filled with decades of associations to textiles, whilst sports is being disregarded by modern developments. In respect of this, I have used this as the concept for my own design ‘The House of the Craftsman’. This is influenced from my belief that architecture should not only be sensitive to its present surroundings but also acknowledge the history of the site respecting what has already existed. As an extension to the Bradford Amateur Rowing Club, it seeks to revitalise the building’s origins of ‘enthusiasm for athleticism’ while embodying the vision of harmonisation between the past, present and future heritage of Saltaire.
