Positive the world has a meaning, though not positive what it is, Constance is unsure of her marriage, unsure of her graduate studies at Berkeley, and unsure of how she should act as a woman--is she really liberated, or does (as she has a horrible sinking suspicion) the male power trip really turn her on? Nevertheless, she charges ahead, full-throttle, bouncing off friends and lovers, bitching, laughing, bullying, wisecracking, philosophizing, despairing—and surviving: "I'd bust my ass before I'd quit."

Her problems include her self-contained husband, Gregory, "so damn protected, like there were fifty-foot stone walls on all four sides"; her intermittent lover, Ty, who insists on just drifting through life; her professor, Zerber, whom she suspects of wanting to sleep with her—why else would he give her all those A's?; and her own warring personality, torn between thinking and feeling, sexuality and control.

Maybe I'm really perverted. You think anybody else twenty-three years old ever had a fantasy about being screwed by a unicorn? Or that other one—the dwarf under the banquet table?

Malone does a brilliant job of capturing the erupting moods and cataclysms of Constance's life, as she ricochets through the uncertainties of being female, the confusions of being young and married and educated and vulnerable. You care about Constance, whether you cheer her on during her supreme moments of success or tear out your hair at her blunders. Written in bursts of sentences that explode with energy and feeling, the result is a delightfully entertaining story that provides both a deeply affecting portrait of a young woman and a razor-sharp portrait of a generation.

It's like the Red Queen. You have to run twice as fast just to stay in the same place. Next square. Next square.
