Beyond Skin Deep

Reversing the Appearance of Aging Beyond Traditional Skincare & Aesthetics
1
Don’t skip the basic fundamentals of Skin Health – Proper Oil and Proper Water Balance.
Most skin I see as an Esthetician is unbalanced and dehydrated. The first step it to stop stripping the natural oils that are crucial to preventing TEWL – Trans Epidermal Water Loss where the water simply evaporates out of the surface of the skin. Natural oils keep the skin conditioned to prevent cracking and wrinkling. So often what people think is fine lines and wrinkles, are actually the signs of dry and dehydrated skin. Without proper oil and water balance, the lines and wrinkles become more pronounced as if they are shriveling up like a prune.

The water in the skin serves as the transport mechanism to pull active ingredients to the lower layers of the skin. If hydration is missing, you could have the most expensive creams on the market, yet it will not be effective in penetrating the skin and will sit on top. This causes the client to feel as if the product they invested in does not work. But that’s not always the case.It is ideal to recommend to clients to avoid gel
cleansers that foam. Typically, they have surfactants that strip away the oils, and then two things happen. Either A) You have to layer a ton of products to replenish what you have taken away or B) Your skin will start to become surface dry and overproduce oil in order to over-compensate for what’s missing, rendering the skin to be unbalanced or what most people think is “Combination” skin.
The best recommended cleansers are gentle, creamy, hydrating cleansers or oil-based cleansers that include ingredients like organic Jojoba Oil which is closest to the skin’s natural sebum production. This can also be used to gently remove makeup and dirt without leaving the skin oily or greasy. This will cleanse the skin yet leave it nourished, soft and supple without being stripped.

Frequency Therapy
Frequencies like Microcurrent and Radio Frequency are increasing in popularity. These technologies are not new. We are simply finding new ways to use them.
Radio Frequency can be used for skin tightening and to stimulate collagen and elastin. It can be used externally or there are new devices that pair Microneedling with RF to stimulate from within.

Microcurrent has been on the market since the 1950’s. In Aesthetics we have been using it to increase skin elasticity, promote electromuscular stimulation, relax and release facial expressions and more. In 2003 the Nobel Prize in chemistry was awarded to Peter Agre and Roderick MacKinnon who opened our eyes to the idea of using molecular machines to penetrate the cell walls without adding trauma or injury to the skin. This allows us to penetrate plant-based and peptide-based serums at the cellular level and stimulate cellular repair. These devices can be used by Licensed Professionals in the world of Aesthetics to stimulate the skin’s repair process and support the connective tissue for tightening and firming of the skin.
To take it steps further, there are newer companies on the market that have created medical devices that send microcurrent throughout the body to stimulate the body’s repair process. This can aid in reducing inflammation, pain, and a host of other imbalances within the body and can stimulate cellular repair. This can be beneficial to most tissues and organs within the body and can be used to reduce scar tissue and improve skin elasticity. These devices offer both
practitioner level software to be used in a Medical office, or newer devices are available for the consumer currently that empowers the patient to continue their progress on a daily basis between visits to their practitioner. In a nutshell, having the ability to improve micro-circulation allows oxygenation to the treated area which promotes healing.
Stem Cell Production & Activity
There is now patented patch technology that works though light waves and thermal response to stimulate copper peptides within the body, which then in turn signals for new stem cell production. As mentioned before, stem cells are responsible for repairing all the organs and tissues within the body and declines by 50% by age 35, and by 90% by age 60. It has also been seen that using microcurrent throughout the body can also stimulate stem cell activity, which declines with age and is responsible for repairing all the tissues and organs within the body, including the skin. Stem cell injections, exosomes, and Platelet Rich Plasma are all viable options to regenerate the skin. Microneedling with these biologics are quite effective as well.

Peptides
Let me just say that peptides are AMAZING when it comes to regenerative medicine and anti-aging. As an esthetician, I have been working with peptides at a topical level for not only repairing the skin but releasing and relaxing the facial expressions. The biggest transition I have seen in the past few years is the transition of Type 1 Marine Collagen shifting from topical use to internal use as a supplement. Type 1 Marine Collagen is closest to the skin’s natural collagen production, and is best for hair, skin and nails. Three things I have found most important in my practice are:
a.
Dosage – I have found that 10 grams daily creates the quickest results in my clients. We see a softening of the skin, reduction, in fine lines and wrinkles, and dark circles slowly diminish. Formulation is very important as well and how they pair the marine collagen with other minerals and botanicals for efficacy.
b. Sourcing – This is CRUCIAL.
I have seen formulations that come from Carp and Tilapia (Bottom feeders that thrive in polluted waters) and salmon which can have heavy metal toxicity. I prefer cod, pollock, and haddock sourced from clean Scandanavian waters.

c. Delivery System – Liquid has higher bioavailability and is closest to its natural form. Higher absorption means more efficacy.
Supplementing with Collagen Peptides is necessary because we simply stop producing it with age. There comes a time where we simply need to augment and supplement the essential items we need and cannot produce.

Diet & Detox
What you see on the outside is a reflection of what’s going on inside. In my years as a wellness coach and esthetician, I know from personal experience that shifting the diet can reduce acne, dehydration, and degradation of the skin. Sugar wreaks havoc on the fibroblasts under the skin, causing them to become brittle and resulting in laxity and sagging in the skin. Heavy metal toxicity can literally eat away at your collagen or block the absorption of collagen. I like to focus on healthy substitutions and recommend cleanse and detox protocols or programs that can support them in flushing their system from toxins so they can look and feel their best.

So as you can see, taking a Holistic approach to reversing the appearance of aging, goes far beyond facials, injectibles, and ablative services. It’s about rebuilding the structure and function of the skin in order to maximize the results, and actually turning back the clock by stimulating the repair process rather than simply treating the symptom. By pairing these things together, a practitioner can create remarkable results for their patients with little or no pain or downtime. Through this you can customize packages and treatment plans that build long-term relationships with your patients and take a progressive and phased approach to their age reversal. They will love you and thank you for it!
