Dr. Rainer Gruessner is known for many “firsts� in the fields of general surgery and transplantation starting with his involvement in the first split pancreas transplant in 1988. Since then, he has made numerous innovations in transplantation surgery, and is known as one of the premier transplantation surgeons in the world. He is a tenured professor at the University of Arizona.


Dr. Rainer Gruessner has had an impact on the field of transplantation surgery. He has developed many firsts in pancreas, intestinal and liver transplantation: in 1988, he was involved in the first split pancreas transplant. In 1997, while serving as a tenured professor of surgery at the University of Minnesota, he developed a technique for living donor intestinal transplants, a technique that surgeons use to this day.


In 2000, he performed te first laparoscopic partial pancreatectomy and nephrectomy from a living donor. In 1998, Dr. Rainer Gruessner performed the first preemptive living donor liver transplant on a baby with oxalosis. Over the subsequent decade, the patient’s kidney function remained stable.


Dr. Rainer Gruessner has contributed to the medical literature with over 600 publications, abstracts and book chapters. He has edited two textbooks, with a third textbook on the way. He is married and has two children.
