WELCOME TO THE WALLED GARDENS A

castle this grand deserves enchanting gardens and ours don’t disappoint. Based on designs by Andre Le Notre, who planned the Gardens at Versailles, you’ll find unexpected features at every turn, Today the garden is tended by Head Gardener Dorothea Madden who came to Dromoland in early 1989. At that time the walled garden was overgrown and generally unused and a decision was made to reclaim it and work began in 1990/91.

Initially it was determined to clear the first garden and see what could be done.

When the team first surveyed it with a view to planning its reclamation the entire surrounding walls were fronted by a two - three-foot thicket of common briars. The lawns had fallen into grassland and the pathways were barely visible.

The roses were in situ but needed attention. Although both were quite overgrown the notable visible features were the water feature and the line of pillars on each side of the central pathway. In recent times a local man called Clancy has recorded to Dorothea that those pillars were erected by his grandfather John Clancy in the early 20th century, most likely at the behest of Lucius William O'Brien. Hereports that the garden was under the care of a Dutch head gardener at the time. The outer walls of the garden were reasonably intact in the first garden but were in disrepair in the second and subsequent garden. In order to preserve the arches and keep the walls intact the only machinery which could be used was a very small tractor. Much of the hard labour was done by hand, pulling and digging out briars, and other pernicious weeds, and hand barrowing them out of the area. The brick for the repairs to the outer walls came from a demolished Georgian house in the city of Limerick. The ground work to prepare the garden for its present glory took almost two years.

During that time Dorothea visited other walled gardens in the country for ideas and inspiration including Birr Castle & Kylemore Abbey.

The current beauty and wellbeing of the walled gardens is very much a testament to the last two decades of loving and careful work by the gardeners team supported by investment from the management, but also to the generations of designers and gardeners who have left their imprint in one way or another. Few can step into this lovely enclosure now without being struck by its splendour, or leave without feeling enveloped in a sense of contentment and ease. For many there is an almost spiritual feel to this special place.

THE LADY INCHIQUIN ROSE Lady Ethel Inchiquin adored the Walled Garden at Dromoland Castle and visited it daily. A mother of six children wife of the Right Honorable, Lucius, 15th Baron Inchhiquin, she could be found sipping tea in her orangeries while admiring the castle’s beautiful roses.

Lady Ethel wrote that her garden gave her so much joy that she didn’t know what she would do without it. The Lady Inchiquin, a magnificent cherry red rose is named in honour of Dromoland Castle’s beloved chatelaine and still blooms in the Walled Garden to this day.

HEAD GARDENERS COTTATE The house at the South Eastern corner of the second garden was traditionally the head gardener's home. A feature of the house was the two rooms in the lower part of the house dedicated to the storage of fruit and potatoes from the gardens. These rooms would have been unheated and cooler than the rest of the house. Until the 20th century, farmers stored apples in frost proof cellars during the winter - this was later scientifically recognised as a "controlled atmosphere" and in the 21st century implemented for long term storage of apples in particular. Controlled atmosphere facilities use high humidity and low oxygen and carbon dioxide levels to maintain fruit freshness. These rooms are no longer in use for storage of produce. The house does however still serve as home to members of the staff at Dromoland Castle.

THE BEE BOLES A bee bole is a cavity or alcove in a wall or a separate free-standing structure set against a wall (the Scots word 'bole' means a recess in a wall). A skep, or straw beehive, was placed inside the bee bole. Before the development of modern bee hives bee boles were a practical way of keeping bees, although most beekeepers kept their skeps in the open covered by, for example, old pots, or sacking. The bee bole helped to keep the wind and rain away from the skep and the bees living inside. The ultimate purpose of a bee skep was to house bees so that honey could be obtained; however, they were often also used to ensure pollination of fruit trees, etc. This explains why bee boles are frequently found in walled and flower gardens belonging to country houses such as Dromoland. The eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were the heyday of bee bole construction, and the shapes of old bee boles can be seen in walls on large country house estates throughout Ireland and Britain.

THE SUNDIAL The sundial was erected in the garden in 1913 having been designed by Sir Lucius William O'Brien who undertook a modernisation of the garden over the preceding 15 years. The base of the sundial is designed to resemble a stack of books and the plinth is inscribed as follows Not grief but joy shall last The day and the night abide And all times shadows earthwards caste Are lights upon the other side

THE ENTRANCE PORCH We know from an entry in the Journal Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland in 1907 that this 17th century gateway was removed from Lemanagh Castle to the north of Clare on the instruction of Lucius William O'Brien, 15th Baron lnchiquin {1864-1929}, specifically to be reerected at Dromoland Castle. With an inscription recording the year of 1643 the porch was built by Conor O'Brien - the first of many (reputedly 25} poor souls who married the famous Marie Rua, and subsequently left her a widow. It is believed the removal of the porch took place in 1907.

One of the finest parkland courses in Ireland, it’s matched by superb practice facilities and a welcoming club house experience.

Dromoland Castle are delighted to announce the return of the Women’s Irish Open, to be staged on our 450-acre estate's 18-hole Championship Course, from September 22nd to 25th 2022. The return of the Ladies European Tour (LET) event is also being supported by the Irish Government and Clare County Council and will be the first time women's professional golf shall be plated in the Republic of Ireland since 2012.

Held 15 times between 1994 and 2012 the Championship has been won by some of Europe's top golfers including Norway's Suzanne Petterson, Sweden's Sophie Gustafson, England's Laura Davies and most recently by the 2021 Solheim Cup winning Captain, Scotland's Catriona Matthew. The 2022 Women's Irish Open promises to be an unmissable event in the Irish sporting calendar and will see Europe's leading professional female golfers battle it out for a total prize fund of €400,000.

GOLF ACADEMY A state-of-the-art practice facility on Dromoland Castle’s magnificent estate, there’s no finer place to raise your game. After his incredible revamping of the Dromoland Course, Ron Kirby turned his hand to designing the most modern golf practice facility in Ireland. The stone clad, slate roofed structure houses 9 driving range bays and a fully enclosed teaching bay.

All the bays are fitted with Golf-Tech’s second generation fully automated ‘Power Tees’ – alleviating the need for bending down for your next ball and allowing more enjoyable and better quality practice time. With 4 bunkered target greens ranging between 100 and 250 metres and at a total length of 300 metres, the driving range will provide a wide variety of shot selection.

GOLFING IN THE WEST DOONBEG GOLF COURSE As early as 1892, officers of the Scottish Black Watch Regiment considered Doonbeg an ideal setting for links golf.

In the early 1990s, the Doonbeg Community Development Company began promoting the concept of a golf course at Doonbeg. With urging from that group, Shannon Development obtained purchase options for 377 acres of links-land from four local farming families. Doonbeg Golf Club Ltd., an Irish entity created by the partners of Kiawah Development Partners, acquired the options from Shannon Development and closed the sale in December 1999.

Construction of the golf course, designed by Greg Norman, commenced in December 1999.

LAHINCH GOLF COURSE

The course opened on July 9, 2002, when Greg Norman defeated Irish Ryder Cup star Padraig Harrington by 2 to 1 in an exhibition match, but much interest and activity predated the event.

The ‘Old Course’ at Lahinch is frequently referred to as the ‘St Andrews of Ireland’. It looks out on the ever-changing Wild Atlantic Way on the South West Coast of Ireland. One of the reasons for the similarity between St. Andrews and Lahinch is the close proximity of both golf course and town.

In February 2014, the course was purchased by The Trump Organization and has since been renamed to Trump International Golf Links Doonbeg. Since then Trump Doonbeg has been transformed by Dr. Hawtree to one of the 'must play' golf courses on the international circuit. He has allowed the character and soul of the land flourish while enhancing the playability tenfold. Every hole has its own identity which will both reward and challenge each golfer.

The natural terrain is used to the optimal advantage.

Undulating fairways and rolling greens, towering sand dunes that showcase the magnificent views across Liscannor Bay and beyond to the Cliffs of Moher. With Christy on the flute and whistle and James on the fiddle, you’ll have a front row seat to a genuine Irish experience, in a warm and friendly home that’s filled with art and surrounded by the beautiful countryside of the village of Doolin. This part of the country is a hot bed for musicality – in fact, Christy describes Doolin as the New Orleans of Irish music.

The Cliffs of Moher are only 7km away, so if you want to combine two Irish landmark experiences in one day, an afternoon gig can be arranged to coincide with your visit to these iconic sea cliffs.

The atmosphere is electric and interactive – musicians are welcome to join in, and guests can ask questions, sing a song or share a story, encapsulating this age-old art of community in the home. Sit by the smouldering fire and tuck into delicious canapés, like smoked salmon and brown bread, a selection of Irish cheese and crackers, along with a glass of wine.

When the weather is fine, the gig can even be transported outside, to the magical setting of their ‘Secret Garden’.

he Garrihys are a well-known family in Doolin, with a long tradition in fishing. Managed by four brothers, the business started in 2000 when the eldest Garrihy brother, PJ, swapped his fishing boat for a passenger ferry.

CLIFFS OF MOHER HIKING TOUR FROM DOOLIN

his tour is the BEST way to visit the famous Cliffs of Moher.

If you want to visit the Cliffs of Moher, you want to do it right!

Meeting in Doolin, a small group of no more than 12 people will walk with a local guide along a cliff walk route. This route is missed by over 95% of people that visit the Cliffs of Moher.

The adventure is breath-taking and brought to life with the help of your local guide.

En route, you will take in the amazing views of Doolin, the Aran Islands and the Cliffs of Moher. The guide will tell you the untold stories about the cliffs while taking you to the most picturesque spots along the way.

The walk will take approx. 2.5 – 3 hours but is spilt up with stories and picture-perfect moments so there is plenty of rest time. CELTIC PRINCESS FOR A DAY Imagine an extra special fairy tale, where your own little Princess

plays the starring role.

This bespoke adventure begins with an invitation to attend a very special royal ceremony, where her name will be added to the ancient Celtic Book that lists all the honorary Princesses who have resided at Dromoland Castle.

The magical day begins with a decadent breakfast befitting a Princess. Soon after, she will be presented with her magnificent royal dress before being whisked away to the Castle’s luxurious Spa for a regal treatment by two of her ladies-in-waiting. After this, she will meet the confident, kind and brave Princess Lilah who will accompany our guest throughout the day and teach her the ways of a real Irish Princess.

Ready for her Coronation ceremony, she will arrive at Great Kincora Hall where her family and loyal ladies- and men-inwaiting will be in attendance. However, when it comes to adding her name to The Book of Honorary Princesses, we discover that the official quill needed to sign the book has been misplaced. The ceremony cannot be completed without it!

In the ensuing confusion, it becomes evident that the official quill has been stolen.

Following a series of clues, Princess Lilah and our guest set out on a quest to locate the quill, making their way around the Castle grounds. There are some unexpected challenges along the way, but Lilah’s experience as a Princess sees them through.

At last, their bravery is rewarded when they find an ornate and magical looking box. They return to the ceremony hall where it is revealed that this enchanted box can only be opened by a real Princess.

Lilah steps forward to open it but her hand is too big and does not fit. It is then passed to our guest whose hand fits perfectly into the centre motif. With a little magic, the box opens up. All rejoice as they realise that she has been a real Princess all along and that her name should not be written into the book of Honorary Princesses but instead it should be added to the book of Real Princesses!

We finish the Coronation ceremony and end with a magnificent afternoon tea celebration with the new Princess and her Royal Family.

CHARLOTTE & CO Charlotte & Co is an exciting new boutique, celebrating

Dromoland Castle’s rich connection to textiles which began 100 years ago. Named after Lady Charlotte, wife of the 4th Baronet Edward O’Brien, the pioneering and practical chatelaine set up an embroidery school in Newmarket-onFergus, County Clare. Embroidery and lace-making were much in demand at the time and her school proved an enormous success, training 400 women and girls across a decade.

Their specialty was whitework, a type of satin-stitch embroidery, using white thread on white fabric. The Embroidery School closed in 1830, as many pupils emigrated to America, using their newly acquired skills to earn their fare for passage. The satin stitch which she taught them became known as Lady O’Brien work and some of her designs still exist today.

The embroidery school was started up again in the 1840s under Lady Charlotte’s daughter, Grace and again, decades later, by the wife of Charlotte’s grandson. Inspired by some of Charlotte’s old patterns, Florence Vere O’Brien set up lacemaking classes in Ennis, reviving a declining business and receiving critical acclaim at the Chicago (1893) and St Louis (1904) World Fairs.

Today, our Charlotte & Co. boutique honours Lady Charlotte’s altruistic spirit while celebrating the very best of contemporary Irish design. Each beautifully made piece reflects Ireland’s rich tradition of craftsmanship and creativity. Drawing inspiration from our past, we’re proud to play our part in helping to sustain Irish design and craft for future generations.

MOOGHAUN FORT

M

ooghaun Bronze Age Hillfort, near Dromoland Castle, was built at the beginning of the Late Bronze Age around 950 BC and is one of the biggest such forts in Ireland.

Mooghaun Bronze Age Hillfort was built at the beginning of the Late Bronze Age around 950 BC. The site is enclosed by woodland near Newmarket-on-Fergus in County Clare. There is a self guided trail up to the Hillfort which is identified as the largest in Ireland.

The largest and most spectacular hoard of prehistoric gold in Western Europe was found at Mooghaun Lough 1km north of the hillfort. This demonstrates the enormous power and authority of the hillforts occupants. The Mooghaun gold hoard is now on display in the National Museum of Ireland Dublin.

Mooghaun Hillfort encloses within its triple walls an area of more than 11 hectares (27 acres). At the top of its central enclosure it rises 92 m (300 ft) above the plain, and before the recent timber growth offered a strategically important view up the estuaries of both the Shannon and the Fergus, a prehistoric route into the interior of the country. Its ramparts are 6-m (20-ft) thick in places, but, their stones having long since been borrowed for the cashels built much later, do not stand today as tall as they were after their construction around 950 BCE.4 The outermost ring of the fort stretches an astounding 1.37 km (.85 mi) around the perimeter.

SUSTAINABILITY ON THE ESTATE A

t Dromoland Castle, we’ve been a luxury hotel since 1962, but our heritage and history dates back to the 1500s. Surrounded by 500 private acres of natural beauty, we’ve been a part of Ireland’s lore and landscape for centuries and know that we owe much of Dromoland Castle’s success to three things: our community, nature, and the incredible team that works here.

To help us take the next steps in our green journey, we are proud to appoint our own full-time Sustainability Officer, Arek Gduliński. Arek joined our team at Dromoland Castle six years ago and we are excited to back him all the way in his new role as he carves out the future of our estate, protecting it for generations to come.

Across the grounds, we are proud supporters of "Leave No Trace" Campaign. Our new signage around estate contains the 'Leave no Trace' Logo.

On the golf course, our greens are greener than ever, thanks to key changes. We have begun a 10-year transition to creeping bent grass, requiring less water and nutrition, and converted previously maintained turf into natural rough that supports biodiversity. Plans are also underway to install solar panels in the maintenance facility to satisfy our demand for hot water.

We have improved our waste management: new signage around the skip yard and bin labelling making this easier to control and record. • We also provide departmental training and monitor recycling practices regularly to improve it, issuing regular updates through our internal communications platform 'FLOW' on our progress.

We have on-site cardboard/paper compactor and waste packaging’s etc are collected throughout the resort to be baled. The average weight of a cardboard bale produced by our baler is approximately 660lbs or 300 kg. Recycling company (Clean Ireland) collects ready-to-go bales and credits our account.

Our surrounding 500-acre estate is a constant source of inspiration for our team, from garnishes used for cocktails to foraged foods used within the kitchens, it all begins with a connection to our estate.

Herbs are used in many ways, as a garnish and for specific dishes.

Pears are grown and used for chutneys, apples for apple butter and jelly and tomatoes, courgettes, cucumbers and peppers just taste so much better. Jerusalem artichoke, an old style vegetable has always grown here. There are a number of dishes we love and look forward to each year when the season comes along! When we have a glut of tomatoes we do tomato consommé as an amuse in the Earl of Thomond, and a brilliant recipe for tomato & bread soup which is served in the Fig Tree Restaurant at the country club. During the autumn we do Jerusalem artichoke and hazelnut soup also in the Earl of Thomond. Jams, chutney, oils & vinegar also include ingredients from the walled garden harvest.
