This Living History Tour allows you to step back in time and get a taste of what life was like for the lords and ladies of this vibrant country estate, as well as their many servants and tenants.
As direct descendants of the 11th century Celtic Kings of Thomond, the O’Brien claim on the land goes back centuries, but it was also a family home filled with laughter, drama, and intrigue. The grand demesne and lavish interiors of the castle are brought to life on the tour as captivating stories of the O’Brien family fill these beautiful spaces.
Discover how Sir Edward’s love of gambling and extravagant spending nearly ruined the family in the 1700’s or how the arrival of the young English heiress, Lady Ethel, sustained the castle through Ireland’s revolutionary period of the 20th century. The luxurious public rooms feature many of the O’Brien ancestral portraits, but the stories of these individuals’ lives reveal both the fascinating culture of their times and the sweeping historical changes they witnessed.
A local from Co. Clare and a member of the castle’s ancestral O’Brien lineage, Jane O’Brien has been running historical walking tours for over fifteen years. With a PhD in History and using expert storytelling skills, she draws on rich historical sources to capture the lived experience of the past, in an entertaining and fascinating celebration of this magnificent castle.

FORAGING ON THE COAST
Oonagh O’Dwyer knows her greenery and guests at Dromoland Castle are able to share in this knowledge gleaned on the country roads and chilly surf of County Clare. Dromoland Castle is right in Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way, known for its frigid sea overflowing with fish and shellfish and its high, heathery hills where cows graze on lush grass to create famously creamy butter and cheese. This area has gained recognition on the global food scene in the past few years as more people have discovered the amazing local products grown and caught in the region.
To truly experience the local bounty, Dromoland Castle has launched a foraging experience for guests with local County Clare lady, Oonagh O’Dwyer from Wild Kitchens. Oonagh will take guests down forgotten country lanes and get their hands dirty learning about edible types of roots, herbs, flowers, fruits, and nuts (such as St. John’s Wort, Elderflower and pig nuts) followed by a feast of a wild food picnic in a wildflower meadow. Next is a trip to the beach for a seaweed walk and a hands on lesson in harvesting seaweed in the traditional way along with rock samphire and pepper dulse (called the truffle of the sea) all with seals and sea birds populating the backdrop. Oonagh also leads a cooking class showing how to cook and preserve wild food and seaweed (along with tips on how to identify and use wild food at home and some recipes to bring back).
THE BURREN PERFUMERY
The dramatic landscape of the Burren is one of the most enchanting settings in Ireland. Wild, windswept and endlessly spectacular, the Burren is uniquely Irish and encapsulates all that is wonderful about this corner of the Wild Atlantic Way.
But the Burren isn’t just a treat for the eyes, it’s a treat for all the senses. Whenever you visit, whether on a bright summer’s day or in the midst of rain clouds, the scents of the Burren come alive. Walk between the mosses and heathers and discover the wild roses that bloom among the rocks, or the tiny wildflowers peeking out between the cracks. A walk through the Burren is a sensory journey, and that journey is complete at The Burren Perfumery. On this exclusive experience, you’ll meet and work with owner Sadie Chowen, who guides you through an immersive workshop, culminating in the creation of your very own bespoke perfume.
Hear how Sadie gets her inspiration from the Burren landscape and how she develops the perfumery’s signature range of scents. By exploring the raw materials found growing in the Burren and around the world, you’ll create a perfume that will forever remind you of your time spent in this magical space.
JJ CORRY WHISKEY FARM
Get a taste for life on the Wild Atlantic Way with a visit to JJ Corry, a whiskey bonding experience in rural West Clare. The lost art of whiskey bonding has been revived and perfected on The McGuane family farm in this idyllic part of Ireland, where whiskey heritage flows through generations.
Sourcing whiskey from established distilleries across the country the expert team matures them on site and creates never to be repeated blends. The tradition of whiskey bonding became almost extinct as distilleries closed in the early 1900s and Ireland lost some of its regional whiskeys. See the rebirth of this craft in action on an exclusive whiskey bonding tour of the rackhouse with Louise McCorry the CEO of JJ Corry, and open a cask full ofhistory, tradition, and incredible whiskey. Uncover the story of how her incredible family run business has revived whiskey bonding, directly from the CEO herself.
The experiences here are as rare as the whiskey itself. It’s time to immerse yourself in the craft of whiskey bonding.
