A Matter of Trust A Special Report on Trustworthy Computing
Zentelligence (Research) Ltd
Abstract What principles define ‘Trustworthy Computing’ (TWC)? How does Microsoft’s stated vision of a more secure future for the computing industry contrast with other views of the technology’s direction? The last twelve months have witnessed a growing escalation in the number of vulnerabilities, which can expose organizations to Internet-based attacks. Last year, 2002 was also the year that saw the launch of Microsoft’s TWC initiative, a significant re-purposing of the company’s strategy, which now places security as the single, most urgent priority in all its products, changing security from an optional setting to a default, in order to meet the twin challenges of information risk and Internet crime. In this special report, the progress of Microsoft’s security initiative is assessed in relation to the information security argument from the Open Source community and the broader information risk issues presently surrounding both corporate security policy and the national critical infrastructure.
