Erasing Wrinkles with Botox Cosmetic®

Erasing Wrinkles with Botox Cosmetic® Botox Cosmetic® is the purified extract of a naturally occurring protein, which causes temporary relaxation of muscle contractions. Botox Cosmetic® has been used safely for various movement disorders for over 30 years and has been approved by the FDA for these conditions for over 12 years. Over the past 20 years, the cosmetic use of Botox Cosmetic® has become increasingly popular. As we age, the facial muscles we contract normally to make facial expressions remain contracted even at rest, (when we are not trying to make facial expressions) giving a tired, unhappy or anxious appearance. When dilute concentrations of Botox Cosmetic® are injected into these small facial muscles, they relax, rendering a smoother and more youthful skin texture and reducing the appearance of wrinkles. The FDA approved Botox Cosmetic® for wrinkle reduction in 2002 and since then, usage of the product has grown over 1000 % each year. Botox Cosmetic® is most commonly used to erase wrinkles around the eyes and across the forehead, but Dr. Jegasothy can discuss with you some novel ways in which she uses Botox Cosmetic® to alleviate “smoker’s lines” around the mouth, lift a drooping jawline and rejuvenate the neck. Dr. Jegasothy and the Miami Skin Institute were named one of the top 100 centers of excellence for Botox Cosmetic® in the U.S. in 2002, and since then, Dr. Jegasothy has been lecturing about and teaching her Botox Cosmetic® techniques across the nation. Muscular complications of Botox Cosmetic® are rare and rarely last longer than one week. They include eyelid or eyebrow droop, or uneven relaxation of treated muscles. If you experience any of these effects, Dr. Jegasothy can invariably fix the issue. More commonly, individuals experience headaches and bruising in injection sites, which typically last 24-48 hours. These complications are more likely to occur when high doses of Botox Cosmetic® are used, something Dr. Jegasothy avoids when treating her patients. We can also provide an effective “anti-bruise” cream for you to use after your treatment, if necessary. Onset of action is usually 7-14 days after treatment, and our patients typically report the reappearance of their wrinkles in 3-4 months after their last Botox Cosmetic® injections. Younger patients may experience treatment duration of up to 6 months. Since treating wrinkles is considered a cosmetic procedure, Botox Cosmetic® injections at the Miami Skin Institute are not covered by insurance. In 2006 Botox® was also approved for hyperhidrosis, (excess sweating) and injections for this purpose in the underarms, hands and feet can last 6 months-1 year! Pricing is determined by individual anatomy and the amount of Botox® required to achieve the desired effect. Botox Cosmetic® and Botox® therapy are simple, quick and minimally invasive ways to deliver the dramatic cosmetic results we previously only saw with more aggressive surgical procedures, such as eyebrow and facelifts. Many patients state that they “simply want to look good for (their) age,” and for them, as well as for you, this may be the answer!
