Old Finkle Steel, Chicago | 2017 Analysis with Ziyu Wang + Xueling Hu Chicago has been the hub of transportation, business and urban development. Hundreds of years ago in “the Chicago wilderness” was also the hub of biodiversity. In the late 19th century, industrialization made Chicago the center of the world. World Columbian Exhibition was also held in Chicago in 1893.

Due to pollution and untreated runoff, biodiversity in Chicago has been in decline.

But, an ecosystem could not be sustainable without biodiversity.

The plan invigorates Chicago by cleaning industrial waste from Chicago river, remediating contaminated soil, and sustain through controlling run-off along banks and engaging public participation. Expo Ecology will recall Chicago’s character as the hub of biodiversity while sustaining its urban activities.

Park Avenue’s potential as a public open space connecting residential and downtown Champaign is the focus.

Mutualism hybridizes butterfly habitat as recreation spaces and commercial spaces. The plan inspires interaction and collaboration between Monarch butterfies and urban dwellers and creates positive product to local businesses, public health, and urban environment. The new public space will also response to need from multiple age groups through performance, natural exploration and outdoor cafes.

Through prototype studies of inserting butterfly habitat in urban spaces, Mutualism encourages ecological education, creates uninterrupted breeding spaces, and increases visitor’s proximity with butterfly species.

A Case Study | St.Louis | 2017 Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects

City Garden, opened in 2009, was said to be “one of the most innovative efforts to rescue a largely abandoned public space of any American city�.

City Garden is surrounded by commercial cafes, restaurants, hotels, govenment and office buildings.

It is an response to the changing urban condition: increasing density, new businesses and luxurious lofts.

The additonal canopy aims at establishing a sense of place, and improving visual experience and directionality.
