01 Multi-functional River Front Daylight the New Light: Building up a new habitat and Providing a new Attraction Individual work Studio Instructor: Katherine Kraszewska UIUC MLA 2017 Fall

The location of this project lies in the north side of Urbana city, Champaign County, IL. The site is currently less about the landscape function, but more about the function of flodd-solving. Thus, to create a more attractive landscape here, I developed three design strategies regarding to the exsiting problems of this site. The first one is about the problem that there are few people visit this site currently. Part of the reason is that the creek is too deep to be noticeable for pedestrians walking along the roads; part of the reason is that there is no introductory spaces for the creek, so few people can really get to the view points. Thus, to solve this problem, the design includes lots of introductary spaces; place bioswales along the streets to attract pedestrians; beautify the outline of creek' streghten the linakage of the creek from both sides of the creek. In addition to its visual function, boneyard creek also takes the function of flooding control. To make this space a sage, functional place, the outline of creek has been broadened; the steps, the slopes, and the walls are actually conditional reserve spaces for flooding. Moreover, different from most of other creeks, Boneyard creek takes over the responsivility of absorbing waste water as well, which means the water quality of Boneyard creek requires additional attention. To dothis, a wetland park was placed to deal with the purification of water. The wetland park includes functional grasses and trees, fishes, various topography and was designed as tortuous waterflow. Therefore, water has much volumn to connect with the air, which speeds up the process of water purification. Besides, grasses, fishes, and trees do not only contribute to the water purification, they also contribute to the establishment of the ecosystem of Boneyard creek.

Based apon the previous analysis, the structure at the intersection of the creek and streets will be the problem that deserve the most attention. First, the creek's basic fuction as flooding-control must be ensured. Then, due to its poor attraction to people right now, the aesthetic values and the eye-apealing ability of the creek must be improved to attract visitors.

Therefore, I proposed three ways of solving this problem: decorated walls, ecological banks, and a elevated river surface.

The Project lies in the caupus of the Univeristy of Illinois at Urbana - Champaign, Surrounded by four departments (landscape department, business department, education department, and applied art department), one museum, and one in- planning communication center. However important the location is, the visitors of the site barely appreciate the beauty of this landscape. After observing the activities of all visitors in half an hour, the designer found out that all people consider it as a short- cut of their general pathways, or regard it as a pathway itself. Thus, the primary goal for the design will be to produce a landscape that not only provides the necessary transportation, but also provides a beautiful scenary. Considering the complexity of the visitors, the designer using moveable benches to shape its flexible spaces, accomodating diverse demands. Specifically, the center ground can be divided into two parts when holding smaller activities or two seperate activities. At the same time, a whole, grand area for hosting big activities can be achieved when the benches are moved away. Moreover, in order to introduce visitors into the site, there are multiple strategies are applied in order to soften the harsh boundaries of the site. These strategies includes the corresponding of the elements from the other side, and using shades to create a united space in spite of the exisiting material boundaries. Lastly, there are many resting spaces with benches along the sides of the site, providing places for people to sit alone, group talking and so on.

This sketch was designed to serve for the visitors both from the upstairs and downstairs. As for passengers at upstairs, this sketch provides a place for temporary rest and setting free of their hands. At the meantime, as for people at downstairs, it creates shades to avoid strong sunlight, which is common in Haikou all year round. However, the distance between the highest level of water and the level of roads is not high enough to room people. So I decided to decrease part of the grade level, creating more room for people downstairs and further divide the specific spaces of downstairs-space at the same time. Unfortunately, after so much hard-work, the height is still not enough. As a result, I slightly lift up the roof of this sketch and finally create enough room. Moreover, this slope is also benefits the users at upstairs by clearly differentiate the place for people placing their belongings and the place belongs to the roof of this sketch.
