Biodiversity Museum Park Junior Community and Open Space Studio ¡ Annesa Dharwadker

Part of Chicago's identity—the rich biodiversity of the natural swamp—was destroyed by its rapid industrial urbanization in the 19th and 20th centuries. As one of the major American industrial and agricultural centers, multiple factors contributed to its biodiversity loss in recent century. Industrial production deteriorated its air and water quality. Urban development now occupies land that was once habitat for flora and fauna.

Our assigned site was lcated at the old protected industrial corridor located at the Chicago city center around the north branch of the Chicago river. However as the industrial age passed away, more and more factories shut down or move to suburban area, and that include the "Finkle Steel CO." site which was needed to be redesigned. The industrial corridor became an empty void that seperated the two neighborhood that sandwiched the river and corridor. During the site visit, I find that the accessibility and the poor vegetation cover rate become the major problem to this site.

To solve the problem of poor accessibility and vegetation cover rate as well as the goal to recover the biodiversity in Chicago, I decide to design the park as an lively museum, embedded in a landscape strategy, exhibits local biodiversity. It recreates habitats for varies species based on the existing topography. Community engagement occurs through planting processes as well as constructing observation structures and pathways to make accessible connections between the two sides of the Chicago River. This allows visitors and residents to closely observe and learn different local species within varies habitats.

Most of the high quality rivers are located around the urban area which contains rich biodiversity and endangered species.

There are two historical buildings left and was asked to re-appropriate for Restaurant and Event Center. My solution: 1. Soften Slope: Driveway follows the existing topography to make the building accessible and the road 224.05 walkable, soften the slope.

2. Runoff Management Circulated around parking lot allow cars entering from both ways, also the restaurant reunk can pass through the back kitchen door on the parking lot.

3. Circulation Round and circulated driveways circumscribed several space with steep topography. Those space can be utilized as rain garden to infiltrate runoff or planting area to slow down the water.

On a 16"X16" base, we have to construct an architectural complex composed with mostly open space and few open and enclosed space. For the plan view, My concept is to create various space that center around a hole that is vertically open all the way through the whole complex, The inspiration is fron the patio in Roman peristyle house which can benefit the house by collecting rain water, using sun light to illuminate the house and allowing fresh air circulation. I decided to create a cluster compostion, and 3 levels of space wether open, semi-open or enclosed interlock and overlap each other with stairs connect them. When walking in the building, people have options facing either inside to the verticle patio or the outside.

River of lives Sophomore Site Design Studio ¡ Conor O'Shea

This project is among to transform park street in downtown Champaign . The project name is given because the middle pedestrian linear park is like a river smoothly links the nature landscape of big Washington Park at the west side of site where seasonal events will hold and terminate at the east side and the lively Neil street with bars and restaurant. This river aims hybridizing butterflies with pedestrians to create a lively scene in downtown Champaign. Based on analysis, there are too much parking lots in that area which is not necessary and need to be transformed to pedestrian focused street.

Based on my prototype, I used a linear middle street butterfly park link the west and east side of the site to hybridize butterfly and pedestrians. I keep the Randolph street perpendicular to the middle street park cross at the middle temporarily open in emergency. Bikeway go around the north edge of the site, pedestrian basically go through the middle walkway link west to east and interact with the 2 walkable gardens at the west and east part of the site. Also the 14 feet wide pedestrian walkway link the west and east enable fire truck to go through in emergency. Roughly 20% softscape to bring wildlife particularly butterflies to the site, 20% buildings tend to bring commercial attractions to the area.

The plants I choose are mostly favored by butterflies as well as remaining and relocating some existing trees to the region to match the Washington park at the west side. For the herbal plants I choose in the planter, Switchgrass are place butterfly will lay their eggs and it is pretty high. This grass can create a barrier at some place to provide some privacy for people when sitting down. Paper cone flowers, orange milkweed and goldenrod are flowers serve as butterflies’ food. For trees I want to choose the existing trees to match the surrounding as well as wild cherry as butterfly’s food and bringing special characteristics distinguish the site from surroundings. Trees are placed around the middle street butterfly park from west to east.

Even though there is bus stops all around downtown Champains, people are not using them except the Illinois terminal which is functioned as the center of shuttle, trains and MTD buses where people can transfer the bus lines or go travel out the city.

Fuse the nature energy of biodiversity and downtown energy of commercial activities together in this transition zone. Thtough the section, I can clearly see Illinois terminal as the center of all the public transportation, most people actually taking bus from here.

The section C shows a typical street around the downtown where all the parking lots is beside the road. People who go downtown actually drive their own car since there is plenty of parking lots.

I want to introduce the west part of the site first. People first encountered several 3 story buildings with shops in the ground level where they can do shopping.

Planters banked the middle pedestrian walkway at the two sides. Pavement pattern is designed based on desire line to lead people from the middle street to the shops.

Geometric shaped planters are cut by design lines and planted with swift grass, orange milkweed and paper cone flowers favored by butterflies. People walk through the park can interact with butterflies as well as following one of the desire line to shopping. Benches and spaces for moveable tables are cut among the planters where people can have a rest and see butterflies. Further east at the north side of walkway is a huge grassland sloping up facing the south where people can enjoy the maximum amount of sunshine.

The slope meet a landing at the top with two buildings and a narrow stair at the middle behind. The stair connects to the back side of the park and link to the parking lot at the north to let people walk through.

SECTION B0 B1 At the middle of the site, walkway broadened to a small plaza in front of the Virginia theatre which is a historical building and the focal point of the entire site.Vertical Randolph street are temporarily opened for cars to pass through. The prototype of bioswale habitat is applied along the parking lot at the Randolph street at the north side, similar bioswales planted with butterfly favored plants are insert along the walkway across the parking lot to match the two sides along the Randolph street. At the south side of Randolph street, pavement based on the shape of building at the east side of park bring people to the middle pedestrian walkway.

D0 SECTION D0 D1 A rectangular park merged the north and south parking lot dominated the east part of the park. Since buildingsalong the east Neil street are mostly used for bars and dining. The park is also designed for providing a enjoyable outdoor eating space. Water features are added in the park adjacent to bar and restaurant since people like eating beside the water. Geometric shaped planters which is typical to the entire site is inserted on the surface to allow people observing butterflies while eating.

Some geometric shape planters are placed around bikeway. Additionally the geometric shape is designed to allow bike rack to insert in the geometric shape. To the north of the pedestrian walk way, there are two raised platform allow performance and events happen. From the platform, people can directly see the virginia theatre cross. Reversely, people at Virginia Theatre and outside patio, people seat at the benches at the north can easily see the platform. This design tends to provide a leisure space for people to enjoy events, engage and interact with each other. To the south of the pedestrian walk way, there is sunken plaza designed as children’s playground. East to the playground is a butterfly maze with flexible space within it for intense interaction with butterflies. The south edge of the park is a line of the building which become the second shopping center in the site.

In this project, we are given a precedent project and choose 3 aspects to analysis and improve the problems by adding 25-30 trees on the site.

Historically, the site was a parking lot, and both of the pedestrian and vehicle circulations are messy at the place. The site is located at one the most important anchor point of the Cornell University, so a design competition was held to solve the problem. and Bailey Plaza stood out.

We first study the precedent project--"Bailey Plaza" which was designed by MVVA to function as a center anchor point that links to all the directions and prioritize pedestrian circulation. From the research we find how the strategies were applied in design and achieve the design goal of prioritizing the pedestrian circulation. In the research, I found the use of different pavement created "desire lines" to prioritize the short cut to bring pedestrian to different directions. Also the red doogwood trees are selected to symbolize the identity of the University as well as add colors to different seasons.

Beside precedent study, we also did analysis to find the current problems at the site and find our own strategies to fix the problems. New renovations are added to site., new trees of different colors are added along the pathways that is mostly used by pedestrian to enhance the walking experience.

Bailey Hall is located at the center of the university, and it’s important in the academic and cultural life of Cornell(flagship place that events go on and has largest classroom). It is at the anchor linking to the other directions

This historical Auditorium would reopen at 2016, and there should be a compatible plaza with it.

The university’s master plan calls for creating a green belt to link the north and south mountain range through the campus.

Accessibility and parking lots: -Parking lots arounf path is not attractive for pedestrain, undesirable view.

“Bailey Plaza is a one-acre paved square that punctuates this greenway (mvvainc).”

Road use analysis: -the roads people used most is the west-east direction which link the major quad of the cornell campus. Also the road lead to the upper academic complex is also used a lots. Those roads should be emphasize on the design.

Lincoln Square Mall Foundation Design Studio · Stephen Sears

Lincoln Square Mall was once a populated mall located at the center Urbana till the shops closed. Now, it becomes an empty “abundant mall” with excessive parking lots and large of them unused around the mall since there is already parking garage and parking lots near the mall district.

The lack of good pedestrian around the mall make it a block for connection between residential area at the southwest corner and the downtown Urbana at the north. Also the connection between Race St at west and the busy Vine St at the East through Illinois street is really bad, both dangerous and boring. Since it is an important space located at the center of Urbana, creating a park here can benefit the surrounding residents for several reasons. This public park can offer people with good environment(plants and wetland), recreation leisure, and activity space(basketball field, sand pit, eating area….), safe pedestrian and bike trail bring people from west side to the frequently visited common ground food market and farmer’s market at the east side of mall and lead people up and reach the east side. Lots of openings allow people from different directions can conveniently access to the park. Most importantly, the design of sunken pools and wet ditches can help solve the issue of storm water accumulating at this area. Wetland and wet ditch functioned as a water filtration system to improve the water quality here.

Also the water fall expose more surface of water to air to add oxygen into the water.

Stones are put in to split up the water and make the water flow pattern more interesting and bring visual pleasure. Water collected from the upper pool slope down to the wetland. The wetland functioned as a water filtration station by pulling out the nutriention to purify the water. The clean water will go back to the ground finally.

The lower cubic lights are consistent throughout the park to create a kind of relaxed and sleepy feelings through its glimmering.

Dry time: Functioned as a sunken basketball field where people can play down there, the stairs down become audience seats around field.

Storm Water/Constantly rain: Functioned as water temporary water detention basin to slow the water down and prevend flooding. Rain water here was directed to open water system instead of going to sewage.

Storm Water/Constantly rain: Rain and collected rain water from gutter fill the pool, the tip of light poles becomes several "island" in the pool.

Gutter at the edge of basin: Water was collected and ejected out through one end of the gutter to make the water flow at rain time visible and more interesting.

Some of the water fall into the gap and enter the pool 1, some of them continue going to pool 2.

AP Studio project `2015 ` Five Sense Since we come to this world, our 5 senses are the most great gift ! We use them to experience the world around us, and see all the beatiful and wonderful things in the world. Without them, we are dead. We have eyes to see, both dark and light. We have ears to receive the vibrates of sound waves and sense make them become melody. Nose to smell pleasant odor.
