UIUC MLA Design Workshop Studio I ¡ Fall 2016 M. Elen Deming & Fatemeh Saeidi-Rizi Group Work: Grounding+Finding Individual Work: Landing+Founding

This work is a practice of Christophe Girot's "Four Trace Concept in Landscape Architecture", which deems that the steps of approaching a site consists of four steps: landing, grounding, finding and founding. This is a standard way of dealing with a site comprehensively.

New Piasa Chautauqua has existed on the banks of the Mississippi for more than 130 years. Generations of families have grow up amongst nature, and reconvene each year to learn and enjoy simple, grateful living. Some describe Chautauqua as a summer camp for families. It is difficult to describe, but people love it and nearly all volunteer staff works to maintain the spirit of Chautauqua so that new generations will be able to experience its uniqueness.

Now Chautauqua community wants to attract more families who share common spirit with the unique Chautauqua tradition. What kind of people should they looking for? How could they attract new families here? Problems as such are deserve to be discussed.

Swimming Pool Proposal Plan

Swimming pool has always been a flooded area and hard to clean after flooding.

New pool provides more convenience for most of the residents.

Locating near to the public buildings and gathering places, it provides more safety.

While the pool is near the entrance, it is a little bit inconvenient for those who live inside deeply. And it is also a little bit far away from the town hall and administrative building.

New swimming pool will be located at an area where there won't be flooded.

Based on space analysis, new pool will be in a semi-public area, it is near the town hall and auditorium where people always get together. Privacy is also provided here.

Since it is located at a public space, it has a wonderful view while also has some potential security problem and noises from the road.

Increasing amount of cars on the road can be a potential threat to children's safety.

Tell from the cottage arrangement in Chautauqua, we know that there lacks s u ff i c i e n t s p a c e t o park all the cars.

The public area also needs a parking lot for people who came here temporarily.

Current cottages are all located on the more flat ground in the valley.

Current houses are in the high risk of flooding area.

The valley also cause that the houses are mostly in shadow.

VEGETATION

Global climate change will cause glacier melting, which hence will lead to the rise of water levels and increase the flooding frequency.

The sediment is accumulating over time, and the growing vegetation provide habitats for diverse species.

The wetland rehabilatation program will provide opportunities for visitors to interact with nature, i.e. bird observation, boat fishing, etc.

O'Shea Interdisciplinary Teamwork The Central Manufacturing District is an industrial site full of opportunities, while suffering from many issues including seclusion, vacant buildings, water pollution, storm water overflow, and aesthetically unpleasant environment.

Students from three different disciplines--Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning--worked together proposing ideas and designing the site in team.

Taking a people-oriented approach, our team address these issues to revitalize this industrial site ecologically, economically, and socially. We propose learning as a tool to strengthen the bond between people and the industrial site, which results in community engagement and job creation.The learning process includes both formal education(indoor/outdoor classrooms)to support innovation and training for industries, as well as a broader dynamic experience of learning that comes with site exploration and engagement with the surroundings.

Braidwood Generating Station is located in Will County in northeastern Illinois, USA. The nuclear power plant serves Chicago and northern Illinois with electricity. This station has two Westinghouse pressurized water reactors. The units were licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to operate until 2026 and 2027, then granted extended licenses until 2046 and 2047.

After the totally shut down of the nuclear power plants in 2050, this area will be facing great ecological changes. In order to help the better development of this place, a comprehensive analysis of environment and predicaion of possible enviroment change is of the essense.

PHASE II | EVOLUTION Sequence 1

Hopefully in 2150 this land would recover its natural state, gain a balanced development on its ecological aspects--with abundant vegetation, various wildlife and can bear adequate amount of human activity. UIUC MLA Directed Research ¡ Spring 2017 Jessica M. Henson Group Work In 2017, UIUC celebrates the Sesquicentennial of the university. For 150 years, a creative mix of scholars and teachers have produced innovations, made discoveries, and engeged beyond our walls in ways that have shaped the world. From the development of the first web browser, to the discovery of a third form of life, the pioneering triumphs in women's education, and the bold move for wheelchair accessibility, we have been an engine of innovation and impact.

To make the university's greatest accomplishment more visible, interdisciplinary teams of students will create designs for campus installations that communicate essential information about the achievements.

It asks participants to grapple with a number of questions. How to commemorate and communicate the achievements of faculty and students from the past 150 years? What combination of landscape features, graphic design, low or high technology displays best communicate ideas about the accomplishments? To what extent can we communicate what are often technical accomplishments to lay peopel? Students in this course will address these questions in their design solutions.

In each of our geochache boxs are notebooks for each college. Questions and answers related to knowlege about a certain college are written in the notebook for that college.

People can read these notebooks, trying to remember the answers of questions listed in them, or coming up with new meaningful questions related to a certian college.

Set several spots along certain routes where people can find stuff. Location of the spots should not be too easy to notice.
