2017 - Community & Open Space Studio

The site is situated on a 30-acre riverfront located in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago. Historically, much of the site was used for A. Finkl & Sons, a steel manufacturer.

Analysis has shown the site has layers of fragmented transportation, disruptions in the urban fabric, and sparse cultural institutions.

Use of historical relics and improving edge conditions were considered important.

Overall, the goals were: - To develop a multi-functional system designed and built to handle the future demands by the urban environment.

- To provide a new headquarters and distribution center for Amazon.

- To design a new economic hub second only to the Chicago Loop.

Relief studies have shown where new edges can exist and how water can influence a site in meaningful ways.

These relief models help develop a topographic relationship where the river walls are broken down to create a softened edge and pinch the site where new opportunities can be formed.

The plan was developed to be an economic hub and recreational gathering space for suburbanites and locals. A series of four hills are used for ecology, recreation, sights, and hop growing. Further, a network of trails expands outward to the Loop, Wrigley Field, the 606, and the north branch of the Chicago River. Eighteen buildings are designed to suit the needs for Amazon’s new headquarters.

Carolina Crossing 2017 - Site Design Studio

The site is located in between the heart of downtown and West Side Park in the city of Champaign, Illinois. Existing conditions are acknowledged by a single cultural institution, the Virginia Theatre and an abundance of frequently used private and public parking lots.

Per the studio instruction, an ecology of birds, bees, or squirrels were required in agreement with the proposed design.

A

A plan was made in consideration of two uses, human traffic and squirrel traffic. Squirrels are provided their own infrastructure of cables branching from trees and buildings to safely cross road traffic below. The cables are covered in vines and are equipped with LED lights for night time use.

At the cable anchor points are emitters that produce a sound to make pedestrians aware of the squirrels above. A variety of nut-bearing trees are planted to coax the squirrels through the site.

Two hills are built above the existing infrastructure as to prevent diminished street life and to provide Left: Aerial View broader connections to the surrounding trees. The hills are seasonally activated as sledding sites Right: Perspective and movie view points.

A plaza reorients pedestrians walking from downtown on Park Avenue toward the Virginia Theater.

This node is an important place of history and for the annual Ebertfest. Once at the end of the plaza, Park Avenue continues as a one way street going west.

Schulze & Burch Pavilion

2015 - Architecture Studio II: Unit The team was tasked with designing and building a cedar and polypropylene pavilion for the community garden at the Schulze & Burch Biscuit Company. Knowing the client produces products locally in the Bridgeport neighborhood of Chicago, the team visited the factory to gain a better understanding of the company values.

Selecting a design was achieved by revealing the cooked underside of the company’s product, the Toast Em’. The team developed three models in accordance with the intrinsic patterns as well as an exploration on semi-private space.

Through the course of two weeks, the team developed a plan and built a full scale product for the Top: Design Team Schulze & Burch Biscuit Company.

ACFC

2016 - Foundation Design Studio

ACFC, Alternating Current Flower Company is a designed entry for the Chaumont-Sur-Loire International Garden Festival. The theme for 2016 was entitled: ‘Flower Power.’ The concept focused on taking the literal translation of Flower Power. An online article started the conversation about using Cup Plant (Silphium perfoliatum) for electricity. The process involves the combustion of the flower to produce steam, then driving a turbine and a generator. With this process, the design became a sculpture garden of a power plant.
