Designing For Change.

Landscape can be used in many ways. The manipulation of a landscape, the way it is designed and created can invoke feelings about a place that might otherwise go unnoticed. The views we can create can truly take our breath away. It is our job as Landscape Architects to go forward and design for the overarching ecosystem and all of the communities within it, to create spaces that bring out the best in people.

Urban Spaces.

The following work addresses urban space as a gateway, its function and performance for people as well as wildlife. Cities don’t always have to be “concrete jungles” and how green spaces can take unused sites and turn them into public gathering and learning spaces.

History.

The way landscape evokes the history of a place is very important to me. It provides a learning experience to what was there before and how different species play a role in the overall ecosystem to help better the future.

INNER CITY WAYSTATION STORMWATER RETENTION

Located on the northwest side of Chicago in the Lincoln Park neighborhood, “Inner City Waystation” focuses on turning the old Finkl Steel Site into a public learning experience and park. The site will focus on three main species: Honey Bees, Monarch Butterflies and Humans. It will provide an experience for people to understand the life cycles of Honey Bees and Monarchs as well as learn how they live their lives.

There will be on site plant propagation located in the green houses on the northeast block. Two long Monarch habitat buildings on the eastern edge will provide a main entrance as well as a glass habitat that people can walk around and on top of to see Monarchs like never before. The northwest section is a Honey Bee habitat as well as swampland that has glass tubes winding above it to allow for people to observe within a safe space. The southern end of the site is a woodland with a raised bike path through the canopy. Finally, a land bridge connects the north and south sides of the site over Cortland Street.

This project was a collaboration with Layne Knoche and Cesar Rojas.

In the early stages of the process, site analysis diagrams were created (pictured left) to represent the movement throughout the site by each species. It is showing how the movement is free and how each species has no clear boundaries of where to enter and leave.

The site itself was visited prior to the creation of the diagrams. The site currently is a barren concrete rundown space with little to no development.

The far left diagrams were showing how the early design could use topography and planting to create pockets or zones for the different species.

A planting diagram (left) was created to show the extensive plant selection that will be used on the site. Each plant has been selected for a specific purpose to attract one or more of the species in focus. Specifically Honey Bees and Monarch Butterflies will use these plants to locate the site and start a colony or home there. This planting strategy is the main way for these species to be attracted to the site and to keep them on the site for as long as possible. The idea is that humans can learn about these species as well as witness them in action through very 0 20 40habitat 80zones. The site is then brought together by allowing people to see environments in new ways. For example, the winding specific designed bike path on the south end of the site gets high into the canopy of trees while with the Monarch habitat, people can go on top to look down SECTION A on the butterflies. Furthermore, the tubes that people will walk through in the Honey Bee habitat will allow people to see bees in ways they never had before and without the fear of being stung. The sections below show the way humans will interact with the site as well as the many levels.

WRIGHT STREET CONNECTION The Site plan is creating a connection with the main quad on the University of Illinois campus and Wright Street, bordering the west side of the quad. This connection allows for an unused old parking lot to be turned into a passage between the new site and the busy quad.

The linear pattern in the site makes it seem more as a passing through area while the glass buildings to the south of the site are providing classrooms and study areas that can be used by students any time they need a quite place to study that feels outside.

The site will have a set planting scheme (pictured right) that allows for certain areas to have plants that will thrive based on their locations on the site. The planting diagram shows the different selection of plants and where they are located within the site. A variety of planters will be elongated and stretched throughout most of the site to allow for passageways for walking and biking as well as areas to sit and study.

OUTDOOR ART

Located directly to the east of the Krannert Art Museum on the University of Illinois’ campus, the design looks at a way to turn an under used and run down parking lot into a public plaza and event space.

The design deals with a utility drop off garage, a local bus stop on the corner, and change in slope throughout the site.

The plaza is designed to allow for the current deliveries and bus schedules to be uninterrupted while also providing the students and members of the museum an area to meet and hangout before and after local events. A small cafe is located near the existing bus stop while the bus stop has been converted into a larger gathering area for students as well as a cover for protection from rain.

The large plaza area has moveable chairs and tables and can be used for many things such as outdoor exhibits and public banquets.

The project was completely hand drawn and drafted.

The cafe and pavilion will be near the bus stop on the corner of 6th and Peabody. It will be a cafe with access on 4 of the 5 sides and about half of the cafe will be covered by the pavilion overhead. This will be an area for people to use on hot days to be in the shade as well as on rainy days. The entire area is mostly protected from the environment.

To the east of the cafe, there will be tables spaced out for people to eat at or meet up. The tables and chairs will be able to be moved freely to allow for a variety of group sizes. (Pictured Left)

Near the doors of the museum there will be another area of specialty pavement and cement. This area will have curved stairs that are further from the door as well as a ramp to the north end of the stairs for handicap access. This will be a good area for people to relax in the sun during the day and then towards the afternoon it will become shaded by the street trees and cool off the space. The prairie grass on the sides will close in the space and create a sort of boundary or edge for the space.

The design will have two types of benches located on the site. The first type is a bigger specialty bench and is shaped in different ways for people to sit. This bench will be placed in the areas with the specialty pavement. The second type of bench is a uniform cement bench. This bench is about 10 feet long and is the generic bench for the site.

MARKET PLAZA

The site, located off of Broadway Street in Urbana, Illinois, is currently home to the Station Theatre as well as an unused building with plans to become a market. Train tracks run through the site but the tracks are not active tracks. The design turns the space into a plaza and an open market and restaurant. The area is designed to allow for people to spend time in quiet areas as well as areas that are more busy. It also serves as a reception area for when plays occur at the station theatre. It allows for people to be able to meet before and after the play as well as get some food from the nearby market and restaurant. The market and theatre therefore use each other for business and provide advertising for the groups of people that visit one or the other. Native prairie grass and gardens are located on the edges of the site to provide a more closed in feel and allow for people to look at instead of bare walls. Several trees will be planted along the street and the plaza to provide shade.

ROOM FOR LESS ROOM

The design (pictured left) for the 2014 Chaumont-sur-Loire competition, “Gardens for the Coming Century”, focuses on over crowding and the effect that may have on landscape.

The plan shows the entrance to the garden is representing the interior of a ‘suburban’ home in the future showing a living room and a kitchen. There are two doors for a patio that people can step out onto. This patio is a small box with large walls surrounding it. The walls around the entire patio are actually screens that one can set to a certain landscape preference (examples pictured right). There are many different sized pots throughout the patio/ garden all with wheels in order to move them around to make more room for people. A large silhouette of a city stands at the back of the garden acting as a sign of larger cities expanding outward towards the suburbs. Finally, a viewing area on the west side of the garden allows for people to see that properties are all built next to each other.

The design strives to show visitors that with overcrowding, gardens of the future will have to adapt to the changing world.
