Butterfly Playscape is a naturalistic playground designed for the use of children and todders at the Montessori School of Champaign-Urbana.

The goal is not only to allow the children to indulge in the fun nature has to offer but to also discover new information through it. This playscape was also centered around the theme of butterflies. Butterfly gardens are located within the perimeter of the playgrounds to attract butterflies to the site and to offer the opportunity of interacting with them. The gardens located outside of the playground follow the theme more discretely, and feature garden beds that are mirrored to resemble butterfly wings. Other key features of this site is the elevated pathway that connects the playground to the new school addition. A problematic concern for this location was the drainage issue. A way to resolve this issue was by creating a dry creek that could absorb excess stormwater to penetrate through the ground. The elevated pathway was also a way for visitors to feel as if they are going through a tunnel of surrounding plants. The rest of the landscape focuses on allowing children to run and roam around freely, conveying the idea that they are emperors of the land.

SHOP - BIG BOX CARMEL, INDIANA

Big box stores are central to the distribution and consumption of consumer goods. Innovation in multiple sectors continue to reshape the way that brick-and-mortar stores think and operate. The primary focus of this case is making shopping easier and more convenient and sculpting the landscape to improve the flows of transportation, respond to the new retail models, and also improving the resilience of ecological on-site systems. This site is typical of big box development, including direct highway access and adjacency to suburban development and agriculture zones. The strategy focused on opportunities related to flexible transit that discontinued the reliance of parking lots spaces. This offers unlimited opportunities within the landscape that can improve the accessibility to shoppers and this includes the feature of a drivethru services in each store for faster and convenient shopping. This encourages a consistent flow of cars throughout the site and minimizes long-term car stay. The composition of big box stores is retrofitted in response to this, and entrances are located on each side of the building. In addition to this flow of movement, a connection to every building is located underground in contrast to upward construction and this can benefit the flow of movement in colder months. Technology jobs will thrive with the innovative technologies such as manufacturing robots. This encourages on-site corporations to be located on site to respond the growing need for these tech advancements. The economic status will improve and make this site a suitable place for high-end residential units to be combined with the corporate offices and a versatility in restaurant dining experiences.

The big box store is retrofitted to feature a drivethru that serves shoppers that are seeking a faster and more convenient shopping experience.

The buildings are also built to purify the existing landscape and control stormwater runoff.

A strategy for a comprehensive energy generation capability is realized with wind turbines and solar panels located throughout the site. A purification river is located throughout the site in order to utilize greywater produced by on-site buildings and makes it reusable in order to reduce the excessive usage of water.The exterior of the buildings feature green walls that help with the purification of storm water runoff and improvement of air quality. Further reinforcing site independence, hydroponic gardens are located within the big box grocers to promote local produce and a waste management facility and bio-fertilizer compost field are implemented near grocery stores in order to utilize the excess of produce into fertilizer for agriculture.The systems described anticipate continuing technological innovation and evolving trends in consumer habits. This model is based on the principles of adaption and could evolve accordingly.

LIQUID LANDSCAPE CHICAGO, ILLINOIS Ellen Wilson ¡ Joanne Chen ¡ April Pitts

Located in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago, Liquid Landscape is an interactive site that features retention basins to purify stormwater, vertical axis turbines for wind energy strategies, a riverwalk along the edge of the site, and an elevated pathway with harmonious planting that extends throughout the entire site to the southern tip. At the southern end, people are welcome to induldge in seasonal activities such as ice skating in the wintertime and movie night or theatrical plays in the summertime, featuring the beautiful Chicago skyline in the distance. Located across the river from the site is Ozinga, a concrete company. In collaboration with Ozinga, Liquid Landscapes proposes an educational workshop open to Chicago Public School students and the general public to learn more about the stormwater purification system that is located in the center of the site and manages the excess stormwater that collects in the Chicago River.

MULTIMODAL WRIGHT STREET CHAMPAIGN, ILLINOIS

TRANSPORTATION Wright Street serves as the transportation hub for students travelling to and from university buildings. With consistant buses, cars, bikers, and pedestrians travelling throughout this space, conflictions occur when all of these components collide.

STRUCTURED CIRCULATION Multimodal Wright Street is an aim at creating a structured street layout to resist collision for pedestrians, bikers, and buses. In order to keep a consistant flow of people travelling through the space, car access and car parking is relocated on the outside of Wright Street. The street is redesigned for double bus lanes and a middle strip that divides the North and South bound buses as well as holds space for potential temporary events.

North and south bound buses travel through Wright street, utilizing the double bus lanes. The grid lines on the street represent suggestive programming spaces that can be used during special events when Wright street is closed off to transportation of buses.

TEMPORARY EVENT SPACE For special events, Wright Street is closed off to pedestrian and bike access only to promote temporary events such as farmer’s markets, university events, etc. Grid lines on the street offer placement for event space structure.

Wright street is closed off to bus traffic and is utilized as a space for a temporary farmer’s market where people can buy fresh flowers, fruit and food provided by food trucks.

The Main Library is the southern focal point of Wright Street. It has the potential to be an stopping point for pedestrians and an engaging and inviting space for people going to the Main Library.

Outside of the Main Library cosnists of a lot of dead space that students are unable to engage with. The exterior of the library does not provide a space for students to sit, study, or hang out. To make the space more avaialble for these potential opportunities, the Multimodal Wright Street design proposal implements interactive and contemplative spaces for students to engage with.

Quad lawns allow for people sit on the grass to read a book or talk with friends. Other options include single tables or the picnic tables located on the east side of the plaza where people can sit or eat. Long study tables allow for group meetings, study groups, gatherings, etc.

Shown here is the contemplative garden located on the west side of the plaza. The garden includes a waterfall wall to cancel out street noise, cafe tables to sit down and relax, and surrounding trees and plants that seclude the place into a private, peaceful space.

In the garden spaces are ornamental grasses that are suitable for shady areas like the Main Library. Adjacent are benches or single tables where people can sit by themselves or with friends and enjoy the peaceful environment. The waterfall wall cancels out the outside noises coming from the parking lot or street noise to induce a contemplative environment.

BONEYARD CREEK WALKWAY URBANA, ILLINOIS

Located on Broadway Street in downtown Urbana, this site is currently used for the Station Theater where people go to watch evening plays.

Adjacent to the Station Theater are railroad tracks that divide the site from a building that will become a market, café and a retail store. The site also neighbors the Boneyard Creek River Walk. This proposed design continues the pavement design of the dual tone concrete that exists in the Boneyard Creek Riverwalk as well as reuses the existing features such as the wooden gabion, potted plants, and benches.

The train tracks become a flat bike path with ground lights to guide bicyclists at night and to become a striking nighttime attraction for late theater events and the nearby café. The paved pathways creates access from the theater to the café/ market/store, allowing people to participate in more activities such as getting a drink at the café before a play. The open pavement spaces encourage programming such as seasonal farmer’s markets, theater gatherings and more.

Bikers travel down the refurbished bike lane that used to serve as train tracks. Other passerbys enjoy the sites of the surrounding Boneyard Creek.

After a visit to the market, people get food and drinks with their fiends. The cafe is also a great place for people to stop by before or after the play located across the plaza at the station theater.

People sit and relax with their friends near the station theater as they wait for showings to begin.
