March 2017 Foreword from the Associate Dean

Lifelong Learning (L3) was established by the Dean Executive Council in October 2015 and the Dean had charged L3 with an ambitious mandate to establish & sustain a comprehensive and financially viable entity, providing lifelong learning initiatives for our healthcare professions in Alberta.

L3’s core vision is to establish a comprehensive portfolio of lifelong learning initiatives for all healthcare professions, geared towards: 1. Improving patient safety, 2. Improving patient outcomes, and 3. Improving healthcare quality outcomes.

L3’s future success is envisioned on the following guiding principles:

1. Constancy of purpose and priorities We need to continue to advance on all three goals identified above, not just one or

two of them. We need to engage healthcare professions, our partners, our communities and our patients in new ways. We need to persist and focus on our already identified goals above.

2. Coherent support from the Faculty & our collaborative partners We will continue to work with all our collaborative partners and our faculty to provide more aligned leadership across all our programs, while avoiding distracting administrative reorganizations.

3. Solve today’s issues by accelerating tomorrow’s solutions We need to intensify and spread the uptake of smarter and innovative initiatives and programs.

Many of these will involve new models of design and delivery, involving boundary-spanning team work, with a wider range of health professions and patient groups, enabled by constantly evolving digital technology.
