FSDI Canvas Course Shell Assignment Instructions

Faculty will set up their Canvas course using the standardized FDSI Course Development Shell or select individual modules from Canvas Commons. This assignment ensures all course developed at the FDSI have a consistent course framework aligned with the AUC Data Science and Analytics Framework.

Steps to Set-up Canvas Course Shell

This guide assist you with setting up your Canvas course shell for the 2025 FDSI Course Development Phase.

Step 1: Log into Canvas Free for Teacher Visit

Use your existing login or create a new account

Step 2: Create Your Course

On the Dashboard, click Start a New Course

Enter your Course Name (e.g., "Social Data Science 3 Fall 2025")

Click Create Course

Step 3: Add Dr. King as a Designer

Navigate to People in your course

Click + People

Enter: iking@aucenter.edu

Set the Role to Designer

Click Next > Add Users

Note: You will add your peer review members on Wednesday and Thursday

Canvas Course Shell Import Process

Step 4: Access Canvas Commons

From the global navigation menu (left side), click Commons

In the search bar, type "2025 FDSI Course Development Shell"

Step 6: Confirm Import

Navigate back to your FDSI Canvas Dashboard

Open your course to confirm that the content has been imported correctly

Step 5: Choose Your Import Option

You have two options:

Option 1 - Full Shell Import: Select the complete "2025 FDSI Course Development Shell" and click "Import/Download" 1.

Choose your newly created course and click "Import into Course"

Option 2 - Individual Modules Import: 2.

Search for module titles (e.g., "2025 FDSI Module 3") you are working on.

Import one or more modules that align with your course development plan

Canvas Course Shell Deliverable:

By the end of Day 1 of the Institute, you should:

Have a Canvas course shell set up

Import either the full shell or individual modules

Add Dr. King as a Designer

Create your course mapping and alignment

Draft your course Start Here and Module 1
