24-HOUR HOLTER MONITORING Home / 24-hour Holter monitoring

A Holter monitor is a medical device that records the heartbeat and checks for unusual signs. Dr. Kartik Bhosale may order 24hour Holter monitoring if they need more information about a person’s heart, after having used standard electrocardiography.

What is 24-hour Holter monitoring? A Holter monitor is a small, battery-powered medical device that measures a patient’s heart activity, such as rate and rhythm, for 24 hours, to monitor the functioning of the heart over a period of time. Holter monitor testing is also called ambulatory electrocardiography. The patient is required to wear the Holter monitor for 12 to 48 hours as they go about their daily routine.

What is it used for? The portable device is used for monitoring the rhythm of the heart to diagnose arrhythmias, inadequate coronary arterial blood flow (Unstable angina), unexplained fainting spells, and electrolyte disturbance (Hyperkalemia and Hyperkalemia).

How is 24-hour Holter monitoring performed? The leads of the Holter monitor are placed on the chest with a glue-like gel. The metal electrodes conduct the heart’s activity through the wires and into the Holter monitor, where it is recorded. The monitor is hung from the patient’s neck in a small pouch. It’s important to keep the monitor close to the body during the testing period to make sure the readings are accurate. The technologist will explain how to take care of the monitor and how to remove it and reconnect it whenever necessary. The patient will be directed to maintain a record of their activities while wearing the Holter monitor. This will help the doctor determine if changes in heart activity are related to the patient’s behavior and movements. After 24-48 hours of monitoring, the results recorded by the monitor will be analyzed by the cardiologist and a diagnosis will be made.

How to Prepare for Holter ECG Monitor? Pre-test preparation: Do not stop any routine medications that treat blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, etc unless advised by your physician. Any excess hair in your chest should be shaved for the electrodes to stick firmly. After wearing the monitor: Don’t bath, shower, or swim while wearing the monitor. Do your routine activities. If you feel symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, note in your diary the time of day they began and what you were doing. Your physician will compare the timing to the changes in your ECG recorded by the Holter monitor. The technician should remove the monitor after the select period.
