The Role of Ethical Principles in Improving (Critical) Decision Making Good evening classmates. My research proposal focuses on investigating the influence of ethical principles on improving critical decision-making, particularly among police officers when faced with moral and ethical dilemmas. The aim is to understand how ethical training impacts decision-making processes and whether it enhances officers' ability to make morally sound choices in high-pressure situations. The study emphasizes the use of experimental research, given its strength in establishing causality, which is vital for assessing the direct impact of ethical training programs. Experimental research is particularly relevant in this context because it allows for controlled testing of the effect of specific interventions — in this case, ethical training — on decision-making outcomes. The research will involve manipulating the independent variable: the type or intensity of ethical training provided to police officers. The dependent variable will be the quality and moral soundness of decisions made during simulated ethical dilemmas. By systematically controlling extraneous variables, the study seeks to draw a clear causal link between ethical training and decision-making improvements. The methodology will include a true experimental design involving at least two groups: an experimental group receiving specialized ethical training, and a control group that does not. Both groups will participate in standardized decision-making scenarios derived from real-life police dilemmas. Their decisions will be assessed using a validated ethical judgment scale, and intra-group comparisons will reveal whether the training has a measurable effect. This method aligns with classical experimental principles that seek to determine causation by comparing outcomes among equivalent groups subjected to different treatments. Field experiments in authentic police environments are particularly suitable because they increase ecological validity, ensuring that findings are relevant to real-world applications. However, conducting such experiments presents challenges such as controlling extraneous variables, ethical considerations about withholding training, and ensuring participant consent. Despite these limitations, the controlled manipulation of variables inherent in experimental research offers the scientific rigor necessary to produce reliable, replicable results that can inform policy and training protocols for law enforcement agencies. Overall, the experimental approach provides a robust framework for exploring how ethical principles can be effectively integrated into police training to foster better decision-making, ultimately enhancing public trust and justice outcomes. By establishing a causal relationship, this research could contribute significantly to the development of evidence-based ethical training programs that result in more morally
