The task for this module is to develop and practice skills such as attentiveness, reflection, asking open-ended questions, appropriate self-disclosure, and providing empowering information during conversations. Emphasizing the difference between open-ended and close-ended questions is crucial; open-ended questions like "How are you feeling?" promote deeper feedback and exploration, whereas close-ended questions tend to limit responses (Egan, 2014). Additionally, self-disclosure should focus on the client, ensuring that communication remains centered on their needs rather than on sharing personal experiences unless it benefits the client directly (Mearns & Thorne, 2013).
Engaging in daily interactions with friends, family, peers, and coworkers provides an opportunity to apply these skills. Practice involves attentive listening, asking open-ended questions, and providing empowering information. For example, I engaged in conversations with colleagues about work stress, asking questions such as "What are your thoughts on managing deadlines?" which encouraged elaborate responses, and "How do you feel about your workload?" which elicited emotional insights. These interactions resulted in richer dialogue, with others sharing more candidly about their experiences. In contrast, if I had posed close-ended questions like "Are you stressed?" the response might have been limited to a yes or no, reducing the depth of understanding and missing critical nuances.
The reactions of others were generally positive, noting that they appreciated being heard and encouraged to express their feelings more openly. The use of open-ended questions fostered trust and a sense of validation, strengthening the relationship. Furthermore, providing empowering information, such as offering strategies for stress management, helped inspire proactive behavior and increased confidence in problem-solving.
This practice positively impacted communication by creating an environment of openness and mutual respect. It made conversations more meaningful and allowed for better understanding. Applying these skills in a counseling context will be beneficial because it cultivates empathy, facilitates deeper exploration of clients' issues, and encourages their active participation in therapy (Rogers, 1957). By adopting similar techniques, counselors can better assess clients' perspectives and foster growth.
Three open-ended questions I asked others this week include: "What helps you most when you're feeling overwhelmed?" which received responses about relaxation techniques; "Can you tell me more about what's been troubling you lately?" which elicited detailed descriptions of recent challenges; and "How do you

typically cope with stress?" which led to discussions of various coping mechanisms. If these were converted to close-ended questions like "Do you have effective ways to cope?" responses would be brief, and I would lack insights into their unique experiences and needs. Without open-ended questions, I might miss the context behind their struggles, limiting my understanding of how best to support them.
In conclusion, practicing open-ended questions and reflective listening enhances communication and trust. It prepares future counselors to create a client-centered environment that encourages expression, exploration, and empowerment, ultimately leading to more effective therapeutic outcomes (Corey, 2017).
