Chairman’s Message

2020 is the ninth anniversary of the Sydney Design Awards. We started this program to recognise leadership, excellence, and courageous design-lead projects in the commercial, government and community sectors. Each of the 2020 awarded projects took a different path in searching for the unmet needs of the stakeholders and users, but they are all undeniably made for people. 2020 has been a year that has rocked the foundations of normal. The beginning of the year showed us what the early signs of climate change look like, and then by March we had all learnt a new vocabulary: COVID, lockdown, flattening the curve, second wave, transmission, presser, social distancing. Importantly we understood that ‘normal’ as we knew it was a thing of the past. We have all had to strap in for the abnormal ride that has seen the least expected candidates adjust and reconfigure how they tackle the everyday.

44

To date, over 1.5 million people have lost their lives to the virus and in many parts of the world numbers continue to climb. Our challenge has been and continues to be how we accelerate to accommodate these new pressing needs, and how we are choosing to re-imagine the future. Those that have shifted away from the concept of ‘normal’, who have refactored their businesses to the new conditions and who keep tweaking and adjusting, will provide themselves with the greatest possible opportunities to thrive in the era of the New Possible. At DRIVENxDESIGN we too are evolving. This is our eleventh year of award programs, and with a new decade comes a new focus. Over the last ten years we have pushed as hard as possible to build the world’s largest network of award programs - along the journey there has been a range of supporting tools and programs that have evolved under the DRIVENxDESIGN, Design Exec Club and Better Future banners.

Sydney Design Awards 2020

Creating the circumstances that generate a Better Future is all about elevating hope. That’s why we launched the Elevate Hope program, to shine a spotlight on deserving young designers. Given the success of the program across London, Hong Kong and New York we look forward to extending the program across all of our markets in 2021. The Design Exec Club is based on a dinner club I started in 2014 when touring through global design capitals. What began as an informal dinner conversation showed there was a glass ceiling for design conversations - it wasn’t punching through to the boardroom. Over the last 6 years, many of those dinner guests have been promoted to C-Suite positions and it proved high time to welcome in other C-Suite types to explore how design accelerates their organisational goals.

This year we have harnessed the invaluable knowledge and skills from this community and shared their insights through the Town Hall series which explores the opportunities presented by the New Possible, and how we can make the most of them. The Better Future banner is our future impact project - how do we ensure we are creating the best future for our grandchildren’s grandchildren? Yes, that’s right, five generations. Thought leadership that is going to create an equitable, environmentally and economically thriving model, needs to be long-term focused with short-term gains. That’s a Better Future. Again, congratulations, and keep maintaining your courageous stance.

DRIVENxDESIGN Award Programs

We recognise Courage, Diversity & Excellence. As the world’s largest network of design award programs we have recognised outstanding projects from over 7,500 Brands & 2,500 Studios across the decade. In 2019 we celebrated over $USD300B of design projects globally and raised the profile of 1,100 design projects. The feedback we receive is that the DRIVENxDESIGN Award Programs create an efficient way to recognise past projects and turn them into future reputation.

6

You can nominate across the 10 Annual Award Programs, where we recognise the courage of project commissioners and creators equally. Without someone saying “we need”, designers don’t get the opportunity to do. It is the combined courage of both the commissioner and creative that makes an outstanding project. We are here to celebrate courage, diversity and excellence. Get involved, to create a moment of recognition for the project team, brand or studio. drivenxdesign.com/awards

DRIVENxDESIGN Partner levels

Here’s what our Partner Levels will look like in 2021: Studio Partners who use nomination packs based on discounts to drive their awards budget further; Brand Partners who use nomination packs along with media space bookings to support the projects that utilise their products; and Enterprise Partners who use the Awards Platform to accelerate design culture throughout the organisation.

8

Partners and Supporters gain the opportunity to get up close with the award program participants, it’s a key sign of respect for the market leaders and a way to engage with new contacts.

Studio Partner Levels COVID has taught us that not all things need to be complex. For 2021, we have created a suite of discounts to help stretch your awards budget further across the board there’s a 20% discount for nominations submitted before the launch deadline - it pays to be in early. In addition to the launch deadline 20% we’ve increased the discounts on nomination packs and decreased the number of nominations in the packs our 2021 motto is increase participation and drive your budget further.

Enterprise Partner Levels Enterprise culture and cadence are key challenges for design centred executives. The Enterprise Partner Levels offer quarterly executive briefing on key industry changes, shifts and insights. It also provides access to our global pool of Better Future Champions - to present or liaise with your internal teams to help accelerate innovation and culture programs developing deeper human centred design capacity. drivenxdesign.com/partners

Brand Partners Levels Using a mix of media placement booking and nomination vouchers Brand Partners get the opportunity to show respect for the projects that utilised their products and services and create exposure through events and publications.

42

The concept of the project started during the COVID-19 outbreak. Many people worked from home and have not returned to their offices due to social distancing issues. Till today, most buildings are rectangular which can only accommodate for rigid floor plans. As a result, architects nowadays provide the same layouts as in the post-war era with the only difference that the dividing walls are not provided. These layouts are not complimenting the need for social distancing, and therefore new building configurations had to be developed.

Every cue in the building is taken from the existing environment and the house is designed with integrated landscaping, including a roof garden, so that the bulk of the built form will eventually be absorbed back into the forest. The great majority of existing trees are to remain, and indigenous planting will be used to encourage native animals to make their home within the property. Stormwater will be harvested and used to maintain the garden.

ARCHITECTURE - PUBLIC AND INSTITUTIONAL

Woodcroft Neighbourhood Centre Project Commissioner Blacktown City Council Creator Carter Williamson Architects Eliel Saarinen famously said Always design a thing by considering it in its next larger context - a chair in a room a room in a house a house in an environment an environment in a city plan. This is the spirit we brought to the site and brief for the Woodcroft Neighbourhood centre and the park. Woodcroft lake in Sydney’s western suburbs is one of the more extraordinary parks anywhere in the city. A little oasis made out of an old brick pit that closed in the late seventies in the middle of Doonside - a working-class suburb 40km’s west of Sydney CBD.

A single core value, a strategically collaborative design process and a 4-metre tall indoor tree are what brought the RSL office fit-out together in a perfect amalgamation of culture and design. As part of an office relocation initiative, the RSL project necessitated the consolidation of 9 different sites into one centralised, accessible location. Of equal importance, however, was the desire to ‘bring the outdoors in’, as a tribute to the premises they were leaving behind. Engaging the client in an intensive workplace strategy from the outset, which included several collaborative design workshops, Axiom was able to pave the way for a fundamental alignment of outcomes, interpretation of the brief and its resulting design.

The vision of Frasers Property and Greencliff Executive Chairman Dr Stanley Quek, Kensington Street is an important place conceived from the Central Park public domain framework. Bordering the eastern edge of the former Carlton & United Brewery site, it brings to the table Sydney’s newest laneway and sets a new benchmark for the City’s future streets. Turf Design Studio with Aagaard Andersen have created a refined public domain that merges infrastructure and history through an interconnected network of new streets, lanes, parks and plazas, including the road connecting Broadway to Regent Street, links to Carlton Street and Central Park and the micro-laneways of Spice Alley. Originally part of Tooth and Co brewery’s 6.5 ha ‘mini city’ established in 1835, Kensington Street’s transition from its industrial beginnings into a soughtafter retail, entertainment and dining destination illustrates the power of placemaking, and the impact quality public spaces have on building communities and revitalising cities. 123

The Guide is an interactive PDF resource, which enables multi-modal use to suit multiple end user preferences.

As an established energy provider, Ausgrid sought to create a workplace environment that would be a benchmark for future ways of working. As part of the initiative, GroupGSA were engaged to undertake a holistic approach to the design journey so the experience for Ausgrid staff began at the front door. Internally, Ausgrid undertook a large transformation within their business to create a more empowered, collaborative culture. To align with the business’ sustainable and inclusive objectives, we looked at how energy manifests itself within nature and conceptualised a story of Lighting Storms across Rural Australia. We then approached a local indigenous artist, Lucy Simpson to provide unique imagery and art to be incorporated as part of the textiles, murals and built environments within the workspace.

Opal Joy Campaign Project Commissioner Opal Aged Care Creator Focus Creative Team Creative Director: Victoria Hatsatouris Account Manager: Vanessa Slaveski Strategic Director: Ellie Moss Comms Strategy: Carlos Jonmundsson Design and Animation: Shanice Love In 2019 the Australian Government introduced a new set of Aged Care Quality and Safety Standards (Quality Standards) that were implemented across the aged care sector. There are eight standards, and each one is framed around an aspect of care that contributes to the safety, health and well-being of our elders, including those living in residential aged care. 146

The focus of this campaign was around Standard 1 – Dignity and Choice. Opal Aged Care asked Focus Creative to develop a fun, emotive and engaging way of bringing to life the essence of the Quality Standards and amplified Opal’s culture and purpose “to bring joy to those we care for”. It needed to be compelling for their team members, many of whom are from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and work in 78 geographically dispersed locations across Australia. In solving this problem, we applied a customer-centric approach by breaking down complex ideas and presenting them in bite-sized, easy to understand stories.

Stride Project Commissioner Stride Creator Principals Aftercare began life as a pioneer in mental health, filling the gap to care for people after they left hospital. But time had taken its toll and their historical story and name had lost relevance. We harnessed their pioneering spirit to tell a contemporary story of dedicated people who think outside the box to provide tailored mental health services to the people who need them most. We wanted to reflect their staff as much as their customers’ needs, instilling pride and clarifying the unique value they bring in a highly competitive and confusing environment. From positioning, to identity, naming, voice, web design and development we followed through to create a unique, consistent and helpful brand. Sydney Design Awards 2020

Papua New Guinea (PNG) is one of the most dangerous countries in the world to be a woman. In PNG 3 out of 4 women experience some form of physical or sexual violence at least once in their life often they experience repeated abuse. Papua New Guinea passed a Family Protection Act in 2013 to make family and sexual violence a punishable crime. Yet, implementation of the Act is difficult with limited capacity of the criminal justice system to respond to reported crimes. By 2018, businesses across the the country’s capital Port Moresby had come to see the deep impact family and sexual violence had in their workplaces. While first and foremost employees suffered the direct impact on their lives; the corporate culture, productivity, and ultimately the bottom line were impacted, too.

There’s no denying the sway of sneakers on contemporary culture - across fashion, music, art and publishing. In a mammoth project which reconsidered every part of their online ecosystem, we partnered with the Sneaker Freaker team to create the Ferrari of websites - the biggest tech upgrade in the brand’s 18 year history. Taking Sneaker Freaker to the next level of digital publishing, we created a site as entertaining as the street fashion magazine itself, powered by a heavyweight back end fuelled by data. An API-led approach allows the platform to integrate into any channel, pushing content, personalisation and automation to a whole new level.

For close to three decades, EBM RentCover has been working with landlords and property professionals to best protect investments and incomes. Having developed one of Australia’s first landlord insurance policies, EBM RentCover educates potential policyholders about the value of aligning with a specialist landlord insurance provider and currently protects more than 150,000 rental properties across Australia. The company needed a new website that would reflect its new branding and better reflect its vision and purpose. The site needed to be designed, built, tested and deployed within three months. The company’s content administrators are delighted with their new Kentico CMS and the efficiencies it has created. One of the key advantages in terms of content administration is that the staff can now schedule changes to occur at a specific date and time, and bulk upload changes into a spreadsheet. 181

The Greater Sydney Women’s Safety Charter aims to bring together businesses, government agencies, peak groups and not-for-profit organisations to take collective action that improves the safety of women and girls in Greater Sydney. Together we can build a safer city for women and girls, which means a safer city for everyone. The Charter was inspired by listening to the Commission’s Youth Panel and building upon research by the Committee for Sydney and not-for-profit group Plan International Australia into the extent of young women feeling unsafe on the streets of Sydney at night and the economic impact this has. Women and girls who are harassed or frightened will often quit jobs, leave university courses, and often just stop going out at night. We want better for Greater Sydney.

One of the most pressing needs for clients accessing legal aid is the ability to receive timely updates on the status of their application for a grant covering their legal support. Portable has been working with Legal Aid NSW to research user needs, design and build a Grants Tracker tool. Portable began working closely with Legal Aid NSW (LANSW) in 2018 through undertaking a user needs analysis for a range of new services and digital tools to improve the user experience of people living in NSW accessing legal aid support and services. Portable and LANSW collaborated together to help implement user-centred design and technology in the delivery of services for the largest legal aid body in Australia. The teams also identified quick wins to help improve the experience for those accessing LANSW’s services.

Cancer Council Australia Project Commissioner/Creator Cancer Council Australia Cancer Council is the nation’s leading cancer charity, and the only Australian charity working across every aspect of every cancer - from research to prevention and support. The national office, Cancer Council Australia (CCA), had not updated its website since 2012. As a result, its presentation, content and structure were outdated and in need of a major overhaul. With an ageing CMS, security, stability and ease of maintenance had also become problematic. Rather than attempting to conduct a ‘bandaid fix’ of the existing site, CCA decided to start afresh, switching platforms and completely rebuilding the site.

Clipsal by Schneider Electric is a leader in the electrical accessories market. The company wanted customers to have a seamless and valuable website experience and needed a website revamp to properly showcase its impressive range of offerings. Luminary designed and built a website for Clipsal in 2013. Since then, much has changed in the way people use the web and it was time for the site to evolve. A comprehensive UX review of the existing site revealed that the website was no longer providing users with an optimal experience. Having developed the original website for Clipsal as well as providing a range of other successful digital services since, Luminary was well positioned to take on this new challenge.

Like many other events, the physical Global Sales Development Summit was cancelled this year due to COVID19. Genesys was looking to create an interactive, fun, engaging and impactful virtual summit style event experience for their Global SDR team - a webinar or a zoom session would not do. The challenge for Genesys was to get everyone together and make them feel like they’ve travelled to a common destination as a team. It needed to be fun and interactive, so summit attendees would not be stuck to their screens watching presentations for the duration of the summit. How do we make it fun, exciting and engaging? With travel restrictions in place this was a challenge as the sales reps were spread out globally. Genesys was looking to create something truly special for their SDR teams.

Australian Fashion Labels BNKR needed an improved platform so the business could pivot to become the sole e-commerce funnel across five in-house brands. The Magento 1 to Magento 2 migration required uniform data migration and the complex capability for global optimisation from one centralised platform - including multi-currency and multi-warehouse functions, across eight different store-fronts. The M2 platform needed to be a staunch foundation for thirdparty software integration, including digital marketing plugins and superior SEO ability. Though in essence, it was all about the customer. It was critical to create a seamless improved experience from lead capture to conversion, with forward-thinking features and a clean, customised interface as well as the ability to modify frequent marketing promotions, and stock interchange.
