Melbourne Design Awards 2019

Chairman’s Message

44

2019 marks the 10th anniversary of the Melbourne Design Awards. Now a decade into recognising outstanding and courageous design, it seems more important than ever to give recognition to those that are accelerating us into a better future – it is what we do now that makes a difference.

This project began with a simple proposition: in order to grow the design sector, we needed to celebrate the courage of design creators and commissioners. I truly believe that design has the power to transform our world. It is the most proven, reliable and efficient method of transformation.

Over the last 14 years, my expedition to help reframe the discussions around design has provided many personal rewards – it has taken me to places I would not have otherwise been, shown me things I would not have otherwise seen, and most importantly, it has introduced me to people I would not have otherwise met. It is these people that have made this all possible.

However, design has been held a little too tightly by some within the design community. It needed to be set free. Thanks to my fellow pioneers who believed that design doesn’t just belong to designers, but to everybody, we now have a vast global community for those that are free to be driven by design - and the world is better for it.

In 2018 we updated our mission to be all about a Better Future - with live panel discussions, podcasts, the NOW Awards, and a series of Better Future Days to come in 2020. This is not a 10-year goal, but a vision spanning five generations – how can we make a better future for our grandchildren’s grandchildren? Now, let us excite the imaginations of current power brokers to create the only sustainable wealth; the wealth of future generations. There is not much point in striving for billions if there will be no one around to enjoy it. We must invigorate the minds of those who control the trillions of dollars in the economy. I am convinced that it is through their intergenerational interest that we will see the biggest difference.

We live in a time that urgently needs us to turn our focus towards the future. At no stage in modern history have we been treading such a fine line between a better future or a buggered future. I am for a better future, and I imagine if you have read this far then you are too. Again, thank-you to everyone who has been a part of this journey thus far, we have only just begun…

The Jury

The NOW Awards

The design award juries are formed from a global panel of over 250 design leaders sourced from Melbourne, Sydney, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Berlin, London, Reykjavik, New York, Chicago and San Francisco.

NOW is a global, monthly, curated design awards program that seeks out and recognises extraordinary design projects.

2019 sees a new phase where all programs are being judged by out of town jury members, minimising potential conflicts and expanding our global view for the projects.

The awards provide timely recognition and industry insights across the global market. Nominations are sourced through recommendations from our 200+ global panel and nominated projects. The nominations deadline is the 10th of each month.

This also gives us the opportunity to promote 40 local design leaders into global markets – another way to extend Melbourne design to the global stage.

Winners are announced on the first Thursday of every month, alongside a podcast discussing the GOLD winners.

DRIVENxDESIGN Executives Club

Welcome to our loyalty program – recognising significant community contributions. The Design Executives Club is a global network of likeminded design leaders, all working to grow the sophistication and excellence of design in their organisations. The club’s goal is to help address design executives’ needs through providing utility beyond the awards/recognition programs. Throughout the year, club members are invited to exclusive dinners, events and forums to collaborate and share insights, providing peer on peer networking on a global scale. DRIVENxDESIGN.com/DEC

DRIVENxDESIGN Executive Briefings We have been providing strategy/ insight briefings to major brands and studios across the globe for 10 years. The awards engine sees over 7,000 design projects per year, providing unique insights into the macro trends and innovations in the design industry. Since launching the NOW Awards, we have rolled our insights into a quarterly global briefing program across eight markets. DRIVENxDESIGN Executive Tours Since beginning our regular global tours we have noticed a trend – people want to join in. This began with the Design Summits, initially attracting people from across the globe, some travelling to one city, others turning up repeatedly. Being the hospitable people we are, we wanted to turn this coincidence into a definite thing. This year we have five tours before year end, so join us and your fellow design executive peers. Better Future Podcast We are in the midst of a surge in boardrooms leveraging design as a strategic tool. In past decades, we have seen design as an operational and artefact-creating tool, today however it is leading strategic growth and accelerating positive transformation. Since February 2015, the fastest growing companies - that is those most valued by market cap, have all been driven by design. Despite the importance of this strategic advantage, it has been flying under the radar with the conversation remaining

almost silent. That is why I created the Design in the Boardroom - Better Future podcast series. I have reached out to my network of design leaders, asking them to share their thoughts without giving away the strategic plans of their organisations. The launch series features 40 design leaders talking about how design is being managed up, down and across their organisations.

The Early Years Hub is designed to set a new benchmark for a Council building as an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable project aimed at a 100+ year life-cycle, with the intention to operate under its own power and water supply with reduced maintenance and operation costs. As such the project has been crafted to incorporate an open and flexible design that can successfully accommodate multi–uses and will enable Council to accommodate diverse functions and changing community needs over time.

Nightingale 2.0 is a mixed-use apartment and retail project located directly adjacent to a suburban railway platform in the inner Melbourne suburb of Fairfield. Located on a small 500sqM slither of land previously owned by the State rail authority, the project demonstrates the potential for unutilised yet welllocated state land to be responsibly re-purposed. The project is an all-electric, very low energy building containing 20 apartments, 3 retail spaces, shared communal amenity and no car parking. The project is an alternative model for development which seeks to provide high quality, environmentally sustainable housing at prices more accessible to people who are increasingly priced out of the housing market in locations close to jobs and essential amenity. At the core of the project is a belief that housing is a fundamental human right. Furthermore, the project demonstrates that a deeply collaborative approach to the procurement of a multiresidential building can enable the formation of a more cohesive community within the building. It also shows that the building itself can also exists more cohesively within the local neighbourhood.

Tate presents eight curated homes in Kew’s exclusive Sackville Ward, brought to you by ANGLE in collaboration with leading design firms CS-A and Eckersley Gardens, along with market leading European appliances from Gaggenau and customdesigned wardrobes from furniture pioneer Poliform. Tate is, simply put, a project of flawless artistry, similar to the place of its namesake – the Tate Modern in London. Cera Stribley Architects was inspired not only by the gallery’s history and prominence in the international art scene, but also by the residences that surround it in London’s rich architectural landscape. Kew’s own Tate aligns with London’s distinctive style of residential design, known for elements of symmetry, traditional proportioning and strong masonry.

Situated within the suburb of Ascot Vale approximately 8 kms from the CBD of Melbourne, the Fairbairn Park Pavilion is located in a sprawling park and is bounded by the Maribyrnong River. The project evolved from a master plan for the site and was designed with the aim of replacing two existing bluestone pavilions with a new centralized multi-purpose sports facility. K20 Architecture sought to integrate the various existing facilities scattered over the site into a new building that would encourage the local community to engage with the surrounding parkland and sporting fields.

Garden Room House comprises a discrete alteration and addition to a heritage home in Fitzroy North. The extension fluidly integrates internal and outdoor rooms to form an idyllic garden retreat in an urban context. A linear plan makes clever use of all available space on a site which slopes gradually down to the street. The light-filled corridor running the length of the building borders the introduced garden room, which forms the breathing core of the home. Level changes are addressed by the curated brick ground plane which is stepped and terraced to form various resting places within the garden and living rooms, materially linking indoor and outdoor spaces. Generous, strategically-placed glazing throughout the house, maximises access to natural northern sunlight, and takes every opportunity to encourage meaningful relationships between the garden, the home and the young family within.

Long House is a sustainable family home located in the environs of Gardiners Creek. Delicately re-establishing the connection to land, the house traces the fall of the site while maximising northern exposure and connection to the landscape from every room. Providing flexible program for a young family of four, the house encompasses robust yet warm sustainable materials. The brief called for a new family home which was complementary and responsive to its leafy surrounds. Drawing on its proximity to Gardiners Creek the new house gently steps down to follow the natural topography of the site which was disregarded by the previous house. The linear form of the house provides opportunity for a sensitive connection with both the immediate landscape and the borrowed environs of Gardiners Creek.

The resulting workplace has created a new paradigm in flexibility, sustainability and wellness. 42

The Arup Melbourne experience begins with a unique arrival via the elevated Sky Park instead of a typical lift lobby. The garden feature continues throughout the interior with abundant planting reflecting an evolving, growing workplace. Ostensibly spread over three floors, the workspace is disrupted by expansive voids with mezzanines inserted to create a cascading, terraced effect of five separate levels – a ‘one-volume’ highly connected and agile workplace. Arup’s day-to-day active and innovative work culture is visible through the voids and open mezzanines. As a direct connection between floors, the mezzanines are the dynamic heart of this workplace and are home to the collaboration hubs for staff, clients and suppliers. To distinguish the importance of these spaces, we used cork on both the floor and underside. The scheme is a salute to total design thinking and integrated engineering – the open stair, ramp and mezzanine steel structures, the exposed ceilings and services, and the visible acoustic treatments, are a demonstration of Arup’s expertise. Sound, light, experiential labs and maker spaces are dotted throughout the tenancy in plain view, on show.

Frankston Station Project Commissioner Level Crossing Removal Project Creator Genton Team Marc Debney, Steven Toia, Jamie McCutcheon, Vicente Osorio, Nicole Mechkaroff, David Sookun, Dinel Meyepa, Christopher Phillips, Sofia Turtle The final stop on the Frankston line, Frankston Station is a gateway to the Mornington Peninsula - and the primary transport hub for the centre of Frankston. The project forms part of the State Government’s revitalisation of Frankston and was delivered by the North Western Program Alliance, with construction overseen by the Level Crossing Removal Project. The design - for the Frankston Station redevelopment, was won by Genton in an open National Design Competition, sponsored by the Victorian Government through the Office of the Victorian Government Architect (OVGA).

The brief called for a building that could both satisfy the requirements of a functioning station and improve amenity for commuters. Furthermore, one that could also meet the need for a civic-scale structure, that could respond to the context and revitalise central Frankston. Genton re-interpreted station design principles to create a building and urban precinct that connects with the surrounding streets and reflects the unique coastal identity of Frankston - an identity that has been expressed through materiality and form that reflects the feeling of life in a bayside community. The final project incorporated all new station buildings, including train driver facilities and commuter spaces, as well as an integrated forecourt and surrounding urban space. The design is a celebration of Frankston that performs on multiple levels - as a transport hub, a community icon and a catalyst for civic pride and the ongoing rejuvenation of Frankston’s broader Civic Centre precinct. The station re-development is now officially complete. 63

Since 2011, Head Brewer of MoonBear Brewing, Rob Titley, has been responsible for pioneering the local Korean craft beer scene and has been an advocate for raising its global profile. In 2015, he and a group of passionate beer enthusiasts embarked on a journey to put Korea on the global brewing map – their vision was to create a unique destination experience where nature, beer and food collide. Inspired by the beauty of the natural landscape, The Edison Agency shaped a design system and visual language that reimagines craft beer through the cultural lens of the distinctly Korean provenance and the global spirit of its founders. MoonBear Brewing is the newest craft brewery in Korea born from a pioneering spirit, grit, and determination. Being a heroic and powerful mountain totem, the moon bear is the brand’s visual symbol – made iconic by the crescent moon on its chest. 73

Delivering a convenient, hassle-free way for customers to purchase a quality mattress-in-a-box and other bedding accessories online, Ecosa is redefining the shopping experience, avoiding the pressures of the traditional retail sales environment. Distilled under a full moon in a hidden cellar, Nosferatu is a blood-orange infused gin with extra bite – so it needed a brand identity its bloodthirsty namesake would be proud of. When we were approached to help with this frighteningly fun project, the first thing we needed to do before beginning design exploration was, naturally, try the gin. Once we’d thoroughly sampled the product and had decided it was absolutely delicious, it was time for us to really sink our teeth into the project.

Working alongside award-winning property developer Beulah International to launch their development, The Grounds of Kew, this video series was created to launch the marketing for the ROI phase. Featuring six children across four video concepts and throughout The Grounds of Kew marketing collateral, the Grow New campaign chronicles what it’s like to downsize. The children in the Grow New campaign represent the older Kew elite, they’re young at heart but are looking for a change; they’re a metaphor for positive change. Throughout the four-part video series, the children demonstrate scenes associated with a lavish suburb in a light-hearted way, while highlighting the benefits of the project in a way never presented in property before. The residences are targeted at owner-occupiers and local downsizers who are looking to stay within the suburb they know and love but without the upkeep.

SERVICE - COMMUNITY

The Assemble Model Project Commissioner/Creator Assemble The Assemble Model is a new pathway to home ownership – bridging the gap between renting & owning your home. It’s our response to the very real challenge of home-ownership, together with the lack of rental stability that many face throughout Australian cities and the inherent housing anxiety that comes with this experience. Home buyers are at the heart of our approach, to deliver projects where good design, community & sustainability go hand in hand. The model allows residents to lease their home for 5 years while they save to buy. Their rent is agreed up-front and their purchase price is also fixed, giving them stability while they save. All while having the freedom to leave the lease or decide not to buy if their circumstances change.

Residents are able to live in their home and community before choosing to buy and are supported through a range of opt-in resident services, such as free -of-charge financial coaching, bulk-buying and community-building initiatives. Since launching the model, we have had an overwhelming response and have since received over 3,000 registrations of interest for our pilot project at 393 Macaulay Rd, Kensington. In November, 2018 we ran a ballot process to allocate the available apartments at 393 Macaulay Rd and the project received over 300 applications for the 66 available apartments. It has been fascinating to see how our future residents have embraced an entirely new concept and are now just as excited as we are about what lies ahead.

We saw this an incredible opportunity to reinforce our commitment to Australia’s Arts and Culture and to align to our Indigenous Reconciliation Plan (RAP), using our digital expertise in an innovative forum, showcasing a blend of traditional and contemporary dance pieces for the first time in VR. More than 150 dancers from nine Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island cultural groups welcome us on a breathtaking journey through their land, encompassing the traditional and contemporary, giving us a deeper understanding and respect for Australia’s Indigenous people.

The team behind Roam have worked in the travel and tourism space for over ten years creating award-winning sites for Qantas Holidays, Abercrombie & Kent, Destination Melbourne and many more. In 2018, the Institute had more than 23,000 enrolments in programs ranging from short courses, through to certificate, diploma and masters degree courses. Along with the main campus in the Melbourne CBD, the Institute also has offices in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. The Institute’s website is its front-facing marketing tool, driving new student enquiries, event bookings and applications. The site had become dated and was in need of an overhaul that would reflect the Institute’s refreshed look and feel, and provide a best-in-class competitive tool against universities, TAFEs and Registered Training Organisations. The new website has greatly enhanced the user’s ability to browse, search and compare courses – a process that was previously very overwhelming and complicated.

Melbourne-based street artist Rone (Tyrone Wright) is globally recognised for his haunting portraits and ability to transform derelict spaces into transcendent works of art. His latest largescale installation, Empire, took over the iconic Burnham Beeches mansion in the Dandenong Ranges between 6 March - 22 April. Empire featured a dreamlike combination of sights, sounds, botanical designs and even bespoke scents. But with such a myriad of sensory information to absorb, the challenge was finding a way to highlight Rone’s eye for detail and incredibly stylised practices. The Antecedent AR experience was designed to capture how Rone reclaimed the lost beauty of Burnham Beeches in the space of 12 months. Powered by the newest Apple iPad Pros, Antecedent added to the drama of the exhibition and allowed visitors to move between the past and present.

Laminex Project Commissioner Fletcher Building Creator Isobar Australia

Created in a small tin shed in Melbourne over 80 years ago, Laminex is today an integral part of home design in Australia. However, it is often the unsung hero in Instagram pictures, renovations, interior makeovers and beautiful homes across the country. Isobar was brought on board to help change this perception by overhauling the brand experience across their digital platforms and giving customers the tools they need to realise their grand designs.

DIGITAL - NEW SERVICE OR APPLICATION

Klip Desk Project Commissioner Klip Desk Creator Isobar Australia

Klip Desk Studio is a ground breaking technology platform, enabling sports leagues and broadcasters to automate their video production workflow, getting highlights into the hands of their fans in seconds. Sports consumption has changed. Fans are moving away from full-game television broadcasts to shortform videos on social media and apps. Our brief was to speed up the process of creating and publishing video content, so that sports obsessed fans can watch the latest highlights faster, and rights holders can create more value for their sponsors. We started by rethinking the entire video production workflow from creation to distribution. We brought the entire workflow into one product and used automation to speed up or completely remove multiple steps from the process.

Melbourne Now is a visitability website owned by tourism organisation Destination Melbourne. The website’s purpose is to encourage people to come to Melbourne, stay longer and spend more. Their existing site had been on a now-defunct platform VIISIT. We were engaged in taking over the management of their website and migrate it onto the Roam platform. Roam is a destination marketing platform designed for Australia’s tourism organisations. It’s a powerful and flexible website builder packed with the tools that crafty marketers need to promote their destinations. Roam is a software as a service (SAAS) platform with a small upfront cost and annual subscription fee. Tourism websites built on Roam get a cost-effective website that evolves with the market.

TraXtar Duo Project Commissioner/Creator Anthony Innovations

The TraXtar™ Duo is the latest addition to the TraXtar™ Series and is designed to meet specific needs in the window and door industry. It’s predecessor, the TraXtar™ Quad was originally designed to respond to market demand for increased door sizes and larger panel weights, enabling customers to expand their door systems for panel weights of up to 300kg. Launched in March 2018, its 4 wheels increased load capacity and the roller was able to break through rolling resistance like no other product on the market. This meant that the end user would be able to operate a considerably large sliding door with minimal effort. To continue building on this success and offer wider options to customers, Anthony Innovations recently expanded the series with the TraXtar™ Duo, a 2-wheel roller that provides the same unparalleled performance, specifically for panels of up to 220kg.
