I

ndia has always been a cost-sensitive market, but when it came to buying cars, we used to pay a premium to own diesel powered vehicles so that running costs could be under control. No more.

Car owners now want the cost of buying cars to be low too, hence the preference for pre-owned cars. Also, with the prices of petrol and diesel decontrolled, people see more value in buying petrol powered vehicles at unbelievably low prices. All this has now pushed the sales of pre-owned car sales in India to almost the same as new car sales - signaling the growing trend of low cost of automobile ownership, right from the beginning.

With this in mind, we got about the task of identifying pre-owned entry-level luxury cars that we can buy for Rupees 5 Lakhs - the amount we have to shell down for a new ‘normal’ hatchback. This quest threw up some interesting facts – did you know that you could buy a pre-owned Mercedes C-Class, a Honda Accord, Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Camry, or a Skoda Octavia well under the five lakh mark? These petrol-powered cars, though used, are much better cars with more powerful engines, more safety features, more cabin space, separate boot for luggage, more luxury and a few rungs above on the desirability scale and image they portray. We’ve presented them in a bare-bones style so you get to the crux of the matter quickly.

The Skoda Octavia, mentioned above has also been road tested by our team. We’ve found it to be one potent road rocket, a true enthusiast’s car with high levels of build quality, sun roof, airbags… the works, and the important part is that its 1.8 litre engine puts out 160 bhp and can take you all the way to 230 kmph… all for under 5 lakhs! Now compare that to a hatchback which has 70 bhp on the average and struggles to touch 140 kmph and has no safety features whatsoever!

We’ve been including a fair number of luxury cars in the magazine, as dealers around the country are witnessing a sale of these upscale models. Most professionals from the medical, engineering, infotech, real estate, startups and other ‘hot’ fields are consciously putting their money on luxury cars to make them stand out from the crowd. Look around you while driving… you’re bound to see at least one luxury car driving in your line of sight in any city in India... and this can only be a good thing as all of us - whether we drive a hatchback or a luxury car – are looking for the next better car.

Another area of concern is the way cars are spontaneously catching fire these days. Are we safe in our own cars? What causes these fires, and what can be done to prevent them? We look at this fiery subject in detail.

With this new-found information, I went to a certified used car dealer and was surprised at how they were trying to hide some things from buyers. Tata reveals the Zica

There has been a huge buzz in the media about the launch of the Tata Kite, but looks like the Kite has all but flown, as Tata Motors revealed its newest car, the Zica, on its Facebook page. The car which is a mashup of the words ‘Zippy Car’, will be premiered in a week or two and is expected to be launched in January.

The Zica will be positioned between the company’s Nano and the Bolt, and will replace the Indica in the private passenger vehicles market. It will be pitted against entry-level hatchbacks like the Maruti Alto, Hyundai Eon, the Renault Kwid, the Hyundai i10, Maruti WagonR and the Chevrolet Beat.

Judging by the looks in the photograph, it sure looks different from its stable mates and is more in tune with the cars in the market.

Zica is expected to be powered by an all-new three-cylinder 1.2-liter petrol engine, and a three-cylinder 1.0-liter diesel engine, which is a scaled-down version of Tata’s 1.4-liter four-cylinder unit, with one cylinder chopped off. The engines are expected to be paired with manual and automated manual transmissions, and prices will probably start at around Rs. 4 lakhs.

Maserati zooms into Bengaluru Maserati inaugurated its second dealership in India recently in the South Indian city of Bengaluru in partnership with Jubilant AutoWorks Private Ltd. The first dealership opened in Delhi in September, while a third dealership will be opened soon in Mumbai. The company is expected to cater to other cities as well with dedicated sales managers at Chennai, Hyderabad and Kochi.

The new dealership located on MG Road has enough floor space to display six vehicles and will offer sales and servicing for the entire Maserati range in India including the likes of the Ghibli diesel sedan, the Quattroporte diesel and GTS sedans, the GranTurismo sports coupe and the GranCabrio. The showroom will also have a visitor’s lounge, a merchandising section as well as a configurator area where clients can customize their new vehicle.

DIY lens repair film launched Most car owners in India who do not have covered parking have had their tail-lamps, turn indicators and to a lesser extent, headlamp lens broken by either kids playing in the vicinity of the car or even other cars reversing into your car. The problem is, to get it repaired, or rather, replaced, entails taking the car to the service station, leaving it the whole day and picking it up in the evening, and ah, paying for the whole light assembly. Not everyone is inclined to go the whole way, so they just stick scotch tape in the

cracks/holes, which serves the purpose but doesn’t look good at all. A little water and the tape peels off, letting in water and spoiling the electrical circuits.

Suzuki Ignis to take on the Kwid The soft-roader craze has hit a new high with the launch of Renault Kiwd, with the manufacturer having to suspend bookings. Such has been the interest in the low-cost quasi-SUV. Maruti is not the one to take things lying down and is seriously considering bringing Suzuki’s microSUV, the Ignis to India. The car looks like an SUV

for sure and has more muscle than the recently launched Kwid, with flared wheel arches and a high seating position. It may also plonk in a touch screen Multi Information Display system, especially since the Kwid comes with one.

The car looks quite rugged and is expected to appeal to a larger audience, given Maruti’s

image in the Indian public. While the Kwid comes with an 800cc engine, the Maruti Suzuki Ignis may be beefed up with a one litre engine or even the 1.2 litre unti that is presently doing duty on the Maruti Swift. This will surely give the Ignis power to back its rugged image, and is expected to send ripples in the car market.

New Innova seen at Guangzhoa Auto Show

Toyota has launched the new generation Toyota Innova at the Guangzhou Auto Show in Indonesia. This Innova is most likely to be launched in India soon. The MPV is available in three trim levels- the entry level G, the midlevel V and the top end Q.

The Innova gets a dual VVT-i 2.0L petrol engine that makes 137 BHP @ 5,600 rpm and 183 Nm of torque @ 4,000 rpm and a GD 2.4L diesel engine with a variable nozzle turbo (VNT) that makes 147 BHP @ 3,400 rpm and 342 Nm of torque @ 1,200 - 2,800 rpm. Both engines are

4-cylinder, 16-valve units, which can be mated with a 5-speed manual gearbox or 6-speed automatic gearbox. It remains to be seen if the automatic unit will be brought to India.

The new generation Toyota Innova will come with a wheelbase of 2800mm, and will be 4745mm in length, 1820mm in width and 1800mm in height.

The India bound Toyota Innova will come with a cabin which is well-equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with voice control and Bluetooth connectivity, a multi-

function steering wheel, a Smart Entry Key, and dual-zone climate control function.

The top end model may get projector lights and integrated day time running LEDs, a smart close rear door, puddle lamps, a smart key and entry request sensor.

Rear seats get roof mounted AC vents, foldable trays, seat base side mounted flip-out type cup holders and tumble forward 2nd row seats. It also comes with ABS with EBD, VSC, hill start assist, ISOFIX child seat mounts, along with front, side, curtain and knee airbags.

Ferrari zooms into Mumbai and Delhi

India becomes the 58th market in the world to have official Ferrari representation. Ferrari had commenced its operations in Delhi with a collaboration with Select Motors and followed it up with a launch in Mumbai recently in collaboration with Select Cars and Navnit Motors.

The Mumbai showroom will sell the entire Ferrari line up and also provide service support not just to the showroom customers, but also to the existing Ferrari owners in the country.

The company has also setup its own service center in Andheri.

Ferrari exited India last year after an acrimonious split with their former collaborators in India who, the company says, did not honour their commitment to take care of Ferrari customer’s service needs.

What will put a smile on everyone’s lips is that the showroom in Mumbai also has a lounge to entertain Ferrari enthusiasts. The showroom also offers full customisation range to the buyers to select upholstery, accessories and paint schemes.

VW India to recall 3.23 diesel cars Beleaguered German auto firm Volkswagen will recall 3.23 lakh vehicles in India after a government-ordered probe found the company using diesel engines equipped with a defeat device which help cheat emission tests, as it had done in the US and other global markets.

The company accepted the offense and will voluntarily recall 3.23 lakh vehicles which have been fitted with the E189 engines that are equipped with defeat device.

The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) said it found that diesel cars manufactured in India by Volkswagen having E189 engine were fitted with the “defeat device”, which may lead to excess nitrogen oxide emission levels in on-road vehicles.

VW has already admitted that 11 million diesel engine cars worldwide were fitted with the software that helped in manipulating emission tests. It faces fine of up to $18 billion in the US. Automobile manufacturers have been recalling vehicles on safety issues since industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) initiated a voluntary policy in July 2012.

Big Chevy sets sales charts ablaze Customers have been queuing up for Chevrolet’s latest offering the huge Trail Blazer, and is reported to have been sold out until March 2016. The company is bringing in the SUV in CBU form, and is expected to bring in more in January.

The car is quite expensive, and this means it is expected to be picked up by the high and the mighty.

Though the SUV is a 2-wheel drive only model, the Trail Blazer is expected to fight the Ford Endeavour, the Toyota Fortuner and the Mitsubishi Pajero, The Chevrolet design hallmarks are visible in the form of the bowtie logo, flared wheel arches and massive road presence. The SUV is powered by a 2.8-litre fourcylinder turbocharged diesel engine producing 200bhp and a massive 500Nm of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed AT.

Bentley Bentayga to drive into India in April The Bentley Bentayga debuted at the Frankfurt motor show in September, and is expected to drive into India in April 2016. Bentley’s SUV intentions were first unveiled in 2012 at the Geneva motor show and received sharp criticism for the design cues. After this, Bentley went on to give its SUV design-lines based on the Continental series.

Bentley’s Bentayga uses a twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre W12 engine that churns out 600bhp and 900Nm of torque. This SUV packs enough oomph to do the 0-100kmph run in 4.2 seconds and gather a top speed of 300kmph.

The world’s most luxurious and fastest SUV was also revealed at a private event in Beijing where it’s priced at Rs 4.3 Crore. There’s no word on how much the Bentley Bentayga will cost in India, but we can realistically expect it to be very expensive.

The XUV goes automatic Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., recently announced the launch of the Automatic variant of the New Age XUV500. The Automatic Option will be available on 3 variants of the New Age XUV500 - W8 FWD and W10 FWD & AWD. The Automatic starts at an attractive price of Rs.15.36 lakhs (ex-showroom Navi Mumbai) for the W8 FWD variant and will be available across Mahindra Dealerships December 5, 2015 onwards. The New Age XUV500 is the only SUV in its class to offer a 2nd generation 6-speed automatic transmission with AWD as an option.

The all new Automatic Transmission has been sourced for the first time from the leading global supplier, AISIN, Japan. The New Age XUV500 Automatic takes the driving experience to the next level with easy cruising on city roads as well as on challenging terrains.

Mahindra to acquire Pininfarina Pininfarina, the world famous Italian automobile design house, recently revealed that they are in talks with Mahindra & Mahindra.

The company has been in some serious financial doldrums, and has been incurring losses since almost a decade, with its total debt close to Rs. 370 Crore.

Pininfarina has designed almost all Ferrari cars including the latest Ferrari 488, Maserati cars, Alfa Romeos and even a one-off Rolls-Royce amongst a host of other cars. Since automobile manufacturers started building design capabilities in-house, the design houses like Pininfarina started running into losses. Interestingly, Ratan Tata, chairman emeritus of Tata, was a part of the consortium that helped Pininfarina restructure close to Rs. 1000cr debt between 2009 and 2012.

Mercedes GLE Coupé to be launched soon

Mercedes GLE Coupe will be launched in India early next year as a CBU model. The car is also available in India in a saloon form. The GLE Coupe is expected to be available in the GLE 350d 4MATIC Coupe variant, possibly with the AMG body kit. Power is sourced from a 3.0-liter V6 twin turbo diesel engine capable of 255 hp and 620 Nm of torque. It is paired to a 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic gearbox, while a 4MATIC AWD system is standard. The full-blown GLE 63 S could also be introduced to rival the BMW X6 M, which packs a 5.5-liter twin turbo V8 engine producing 576 hp and 760 Nm of torque.

Unconfirmed reports reveal Skoda’s plan to debut their Seven-seater SUV at the Paris Motor Show and may be put up for sale next yearend. This SUV will be positioned above the low-selling Skoda Yeti and is expected to be a price at a premium. Dubbed the Snowman, the vehocle is expected to be over 4.7 meters long and contain the Skoda Superb and Octavia engines, including the 1.8 litre petrol and 2.0 litre Diesel engines, ported through a six speed manual or seven speed automatic gearbox. Given Skoda India’s strategy of targeting the premium segment, the Snowman could launch in India as a less expensive alternative to its German cousin, the 2016 VW Tiguan, which is confirmed for the Indian market.

MW has tried to market the X1 as a vehicle catered “for a life full of possibilities”. The combination looks appealing on the surface for an entry level German SUV that’s blessed with a recognized badge and the sort of technical abilities to venture where few others can.

We reserve that description for the X1’s that actually possess BMW’s impressive xDrive technology and based on an experience we had near a lake bank, it isn’t hard to consider its all-wheel drive system as one of the best in the business. Problem is, this X1 sDrive20d we have on hand, comes without the stuff, and in fact it’s the only variant of the X1 available on the used car market at the moment, so is it really worthy to buy a BMW “X” car?

Equipment: BMW X1 was launched in 2009 with one

trim level as standard. It comes equipped with xenon headlights, satellite navigation, Bluetooth, 8 speakers, rear parking sensors and six air bags. Buyers can also choose from different 17-inch alloy wheel options, to leather upholstery as well.

Practicality: The headroom is impressive and legroom is very good as the X1 echoes the bigger X models’ versatility and it is spacious inside considering the family compact size. There’s plenty of room in the boot - the area is wide and long with 420 litres of space. The rear seats split and fold down to create a larger load space. In the cabin, storage is decent with good-sized door pockets and a central cup holder along with a cubbyhole that doubles as the centre armrest.

Running cost: Most German makes have a reputation for pricey servicing but while BMW X1 running costs may be more expensive compared to the likes of Audi Q3 and Skoda Yeti. The decent fuel economy of the X1 means running costs can be kept at a reasonable level.

Reliability: BMW has a good reputation for well-built and solid cars, so there are rarely any issues

with BMW X1’s reliability. The X1 feels as robust as a BMW off-roader should. On the road the X1 impresses with its composed manners, maintaining comfortable and relaxing drive.

But off-roading could get a bit fussy and transmits more of the road imperfections into the cabin.

what the X1 is. Compact off-roaders and soft roaders are popular these days, not because they are taken off-road, but are used as style statements, and the fact that this is a BMW gives it extra appeal to pre-owned compact off-roader buyers.

Buying used:

BMW’s X1 was an instant hit when it first went on sale in October 2009. It isolates itself a bit in a similar way that the X6 does, working around the need to fulfil a niche by creating a smaller one of its own. It brings the concept of a saloon, estate and an SUV closer together, but not too convincingly. There is not much to place in high regard but perceive it as being a bit of a rugged car to rush around in everyday life. - Murtuza Abedi

ange Rover is known around the world for its no-nonsense luxurious off-roaders that are equally at home in the city. Trouble is, they are so bloody expensive that no normal person would be able to afford one of these… until this model from the company. Ever since it’s been introduced, it has managed to pull in younger buyers as well as people buying entry-level luxury cars. Now with the car available in the pre-owned segment, it’s even more affordable.

It is an extremely good-looking car, after all it was designed by Spice girl Victoria Beckham,

and being a Range Rover, it’ll take your image a few notches upwards on the social circuit.

Equipment The Evoque comes with a 2.2 litre turbo diesel that puts out 194 bhp to the 18 inch wheels through a 9-speed automatic gearbox. Keeping in line with its family tradition, the Evoque is also equipped with an AWD system to give it some legs off the road. Though this is no match for a proper 4x4 system that is there in its larger siblings, it is more than enough for a softroader with off-road intentions. The Evoque comes with 6 airbags, ABS, EBD, brake assist,

traction control, hill hold control, Immobilizer, collapsible steering column, rear wash/wipe, electrical sun roof, bottle holders front and rear, 12v power outlets, front cup holders, auto rain sensing wipers, GPS navigation, touch screen display, Double DIN music system with USB/Aux in, six-way manually adjustable driver seat, cruise control, steering mounted audio controls, 60/40 folding rear seat, electric retractable rear view mirrors, LED tail lamps, and a huge 575 litre boot.

Practicality Luxury offerings from the Range Rover stable are often unwieldy, their weight and large proportions making them a tad tough to pilot on the Indian roads, so it’s a joy to finally see a Range Rover that is good to look at, performs exquisitely on the road and is also mildly capable off-road, but what’s pulling people to it are the top class looks and brand image.

Even though the roof is sloping towards the rear, there is quite a lot of space inside for all passengers, sitting in the front or the rear. The needle stich leather seats are soft, wide and will keep you cocooned in luxury. The car also has a big 575 liters of boot space, add to it is the 60:40 the split of the rear seats that multiplies the space making it further practical. The cabin

have paid a couple of years ago for it, so prices will naturally be slashed to market rates. That said, if the car has been looked after well, with all the service records available, it will retain value better.

Verdict If you are looking for a well-known brand of SUV, then it makes immense sense to pick one up when you can. It offers you a desirable set of wheels, that is not only at home in the city’ but also on the highway and the road less travelled.

As crossovers go, this is one sorted out vehicle and has all the features we expect of a bigger Range Rover, but within manageable proportions and luxurious interiors. - Johnson

Also Consider is very well appointed and has a luxurious feel to everything. The Evoque has no gear shifter, but rotary switches which are concealed until you start the car, after which they pop out slowly from their hideouts. The Terrain Response system switches are also close to the rotary shifter. Due to the design, the rear glass is quite small and compromises rear visibility. Taking the luxury theme forward is the excellent sound system – its eight speakers providing a theater-like experience in a car. The drive system is excellent and the gearbox compliments it thoroughly, while the AWD system is good enough to take the car through whatever you throw at it. Handling is superb with loads of grip at any speed, while the suspension is tuned to absorb everything on the road, with only big potholes being felt in the cabin.

Running costs The Range Rover Evoque returns a combined mileage of 8kmpl, not bad for a crossover with off-road intentions. Service and spares cost the earth, but remember it is a proper luxury vehicle and it has cost to match. All that top class instrumentation and the materials used in the interiors are expensive and maintaining them costs too. These costs are in line with its contemporaries.

Reliability The Evoque, though from the Tata stable, is completely imported, and is top class. Range Rovers are known to last decades on end without any serious problems. Even this baby SUV is built on those lines and will be very reliable, but since this is a modern vehicle, it needs proper care every once in a while.

So adherence to service schedules does wonders to it longevity.

Buying used It is a best seller all over the world with Tata struggling to keep up with orders, with so much going for it, the car is quickly snapped up. Do bear in mind that when new, the Evoque was brought into India through the CBU route and hence very expensive. The new Evoque is made in India and is cheaper by a large margin, so you’ve got everything to gain if you decide to buy the pre-owned one.

Pick one up as soon as you can… you’ll not regret it. It’s got performance, image, brand value, safety, capability and at great prices.

There are cup and bottle holders for the front and the rear, plus a reading light for the rear seat… this small detail is often overlooked in most cars, and ah, the tail gate can be opened at the touch of a button and even closed the same way. The dashboard is a little cluttered with a host of buttons, but it’ll be okay once you get the hang of it. That said, everything falls to hand easily, ergonomically it’s quite sorted out and doesn’t distract the driver. The suspension is slightly on the stiffer side and low-speed drives – aka city drives - are slightly uncomfortable, but the same suspension flattens bad roads and no roads at speeds, so highway and off-road adventures are the name of the game. From the present crop of Crossovers, this is the best looking, and backs it up by good performance.

Running costs A long body, big engine, quality build and a host of safety features make the D5 quite a heavy vehicle, and at 1.8 tons, it takes a lot

of power to keep it moving, and it shows on the fuel consumption figures. The D5 returns a combined average of around 9kmpl. Also bear in mind that spares and service are above industry average and will cost you quite a bit, but then this is no ordinary vehicle, it is

a Crossover that scores well in every other department, and is quite popular in the country.

It’ll keep serving you without complaint for years to come and suddenly sacrifice its life for you in the event of an accident, with all its safety features combining forces to keep the occupant safe.

Reliability Volvos have a reputation for quality and safety, and this XC60 is no exception. They will keep going on and on for years at end, provided you adhere to its regular service schedules. Owners are quite a happy lot and would gladly vouch for it, and no major complaints have been reported from anywhere around the country.

Buying used It’s the best looking one among the current breed of Crossovers and since it does not

have the brand image of its other well-known rivals, it depreciates considerably and make an excellent choice as a pre-owned vehicle. Make no mistake about its image though – it turns heads everywhere you go. Most used ones in the market are well looked after and kept very well mechanically too, after all they have service histories, so you can almost pick them up with your eyes closed!

Selling The XC60 has quite a fan following, so it will be quite easy to get maximum for your car, if it’s been kept well and all service records are available with you. However, bear in mind that since it’s not that popular a vehicle, and does not have brand value, buyers will try to beat down the price, but if you persist, you can get most of the price you paid for it.

Verdict The Volvo XC60 may not have the brand power of the other luxury marquees but it more than compensates for it with its list of safety features that are only available as options in its rivals.

With the interest on the Crossover segment at its highest in India, and the XC having a diesel heart, plus the All-Wheel-Drive, there’s no

orld over, the Octavia vRS has endeared itself to police forces for its understated styling, great performance, reliability and ease of ownership, but in India it does not sell as well as it should because in its heart beats a petrol motor. Do not get swayed by what others think of it though, as it has as many admirers who swear by its performance, and would readily sell their soul to the devil to possess this amazing road rocket.

Equipment: The vRS we’re testing here has a turbo-charged 1.8 litre petrol engine belting out 160 bhp and has a top speed of 230 kmph… and its build quality is solid, unlike its Japanese competitors, which makes its ride quality better than anything in its price bracket. This Octavia comes with a sunroof, six airbags, parking sensors, ABS, EBD, ESP, Traction Control, Leather seats, folding rear seats, alloy wheels, rear AC vents, rain sensing wipers, darkness sensing headlamps… in short everything you’d ever need. It’s got oodles of speed backed by safety features that keep you protected in case of an accident, but at no time does it feel out of control. It feels so planted that you are ‘driven’ to take it to the limit.

on to the road surface like a leech. Suspension is a bit stiff for a ‘family’ car but then with its Rally Sport pedigree, it is perfect for such a fast and heavy car. Space is what the Octavia has in abundance, so travelling city to city is a very comfortable chore, while the huge boot will gobble up all the passengers’ luggage and some. The interiors are a bit staid by current standards, but remember that the vRS we have on hand is a decade old. The dashboard looks dated, then again, the interiors are functional

and everything falls to hand easily, without fumbling. It is built like a vault with thick body panels and doors shut with a reassuring thud.

The rear seats fold down completely which increases the boot space multi-fold in times of a luggage emergency. The seats are wellpadded and comfortable, and the leg room front and rear is more than enough. While the drive in city limits is its weak point, out on the highway is where it shows its true colours. A true driver’s car.

Running costs The Octy weighs nearly a ton and a half and it’s got a scorcher of an engine and it’s a petrol, so you’ve got a fuel guzzler on hands. That said, no one buys the Octavia vRS for fuel economy, but in its defense, even with these negatives, it consistently returns 8-10kmpl in the city and over 14kmpl on the highways. Service has always been a problem with Skodas, with owners rating their service centers very low, plus the cost of spares and service is above industry average… but everything is forgotten once you’re in the driver’s seat. All your car worries are replaced by an ear to ear grin.

Reliability Skodas are reputed to ride well without giving owners headaches. No major problems have been reported, except for service related ones, which differ from place to place. No major

reliability problems are foreseen too, if the service schedules are adhered to at regular intervals.

Running costs Both the petrol and diesel are fuel sippers, with good fuel economy, spares are on the higher side, and more importantly, it’s a modern design. That said, it’s an extremely desirable machine that’s good on both city roads and the highways.

Reliability Marutis have a reputation for reliability, and this one’s no different. It’s very rare to see broken down Dzires, unless they’re treated very badly, which is a shame, because this car keeps going on and on and on.

Reliability The Japanese are known for their no-nonsense machines and the Honda is also pretty reliable, in any case this is a new model and we expect no troubles in owning this car. It will keep doing what it’s supposed to do consistently.

Pros Fiat-sourced multi-jet diesel is the best and then some, ride quality, drivability, fuel efficiency, large service network.

Cons Frankenstien-like grafted boot is ugly, fixed rear seat.

Pros Small outside, large inside, powerful engines, boot well-designed body and interiors.

Cons Diesel engine clatters, lower versions have a lot of equipment missing.

Verdict There’s very little separating the two cars but the Maruti’s multi-Jet engine is a joy to use compared to the good, but a shade lower engine of the Honda. Fuel economy is almost the same, but what tilts the balance towards the Dzire, are the low cost of spares, the exhaustive service network and great resale value.

Is it any wonder this choice of function over form is winning in the market?

Buying Used It’s arguably the best looking homegrown SUV ever, you could buy it just for that, and is also comfortable among the big Japanese Sport-utes, however, there are niggles a-plenty, so check for detailed service history and then go for it.

Buying Used The Safari has been updated to the Storme in every department but it still looks the same, that said, it can take a lot of beating on the highways and takes bad roads with aplomb. Owners typically abuse them, so look out for signs of damages.

Selling You’ll find no problem whatsoever in selling your XUV500 as it’s one of the cheapest good-looking SUVs you can find in India. You’ll even get a major portion of the money you originally spent on it, if you have a service record.

Selling The Storme holds it’s price reasonably well and if it’s well-kept you’ll even get most of your money back, as there are a lot of die-hard Safari fans who laugh at the little crossovers and put their money on the Storme.

Keep service records and you’ll get more.

Practicality A refined car in every sense of the word, and it doesn’t look and feel like a Mahindra product. Being a monocoque, it’s lighter than the Storme and its ride is impeccable, however, bad roads unsettle it. Luggage space is almost non-existent.

Practicality The Storme is an extremely comfortable car on the highway with amazing ride quality. It can tackle mild off road excursions and gives you the tough-boy feeling. Used as a 5-Seater, it can easily accommodate luggage for a long trip for 5 people.

Running costs The XUV is easy to live with as it is comparable to the Storme in all departments - it’s got 7 seats, mileage is good, spares are reasonably priced, but what really is a deal breaker is that Mahindra service is also as bad as Tata’s.

Running costs It’s not built too well, too many things go wrong frequently; Tata Service is not the best; Spares are reasonably priced and most importantly, since there are better options in the market, you might get a preowned Storme at a reasonable price.

Reliability The XUV is a well-built car and feels the same while driving, however, there are reports of brake pads wearing fast, funny noises from the brakes, electrical options going kaput etc. The engine, of course, is very reliable and can run all day.

Reliability Like the XUV, even the Storme suffers from niggles all through the car at regular intervals and needs care every now and then, however, it’s an extremely consistent performer and can go hopping from city to city without complaint.

he Mercedes E-Class Coupe stands out from its siblings due to its large two-slat grille and a largish threepointed star in the middle… a welcome change too, as it looks sporty.

That said there’s not much to distinguish it from its sedan sibling, unless you look at it from its side profile, where its two huge doors give away its Coupe character. It’s a luxury sports car for the ‘gentleman driver’, it doesn’t make the usual ‘sporty’ noises and goes about its work with cool precision.

Anyone who puts so much money on it may want it to be sportier sounding with its engine and exhaust note singing in tune, it’s a sort of unwritten rule in the automotive world, and this Merc breaks the rules and blazes its own path, silently. But there’s no denying that it’s got speed, power, comfort, handling and ride quality in large doses.

Practicality At 4.6 meters, the E-Class Coupe is an XL size, which throws open a lot of space for its occupants and their luggage, no problem there on practicality, however, its height - at 1397mm - is lower than a Maruti Alto’s, so getting in and out is a practical problem.

Equipment The E-Class Coupe comes with a 3498 cc V6 Petrol engine that makes a very healthy 272 bhp @ 6000 rpm and is routed to the wheels through a seven speed automatic gearbox. This two-door, four-seater, rear wheel drive car has a huge 540 litre boot that can swallow most of your luggage.

The same low-slung shape aids when on the highway at 3-digit speeds, where it literally sticks to the road, even when cornering. Its sporty intentions can be seen it its Agility Control System which stiffens dampers when you push it hard, and softens when driven in a relaxed manner… all these make it a very relaxed and safe highway cruiser.

You’ll be cocooned in luxury you except from a Merc, and even tall people will not complain about leg space, but the same tall people would be uncomfortable in the rear seats, as the sloping roof severely restricts head room. Between the rear seats is a block containing two cup holders and a storage space for odds and ends.

The huge sunroof also gets a netted kind of screen to shut out the harsh Indian sunlight. The pillar-less car with its huge rimless doors make it one good-looking car. But for all the beauty and kit on offer,

what takes the cake is the engine, which is the star of the show and takes the huge car from 0-100 7.5 seconds, and goes on to over 250kmph. Ground clearance is just 123mm and needs very careful handling over speed breakers, otherwise you’ll be left with huge repair bills. Also, for a luxury car with sporty intentions, it is very surprising that it doesn’t come with paddle shifts, even the power, though more than adequate, is transferred onto the road rather softly. There’s no power rush as expected in a sports car.

Running costs India is obsessed with mileage and this huge car with a huge engine with sporty intentions disappoints on the face of it with a combined mileage of 7-9kmpl, but for a 3.5 litre engine hauling over 1.8 tonnes, it’s a pretty good figure! But then again, you do not buy a sports car for mileage figures, do you? Service and spares cost a bomb though. This Merc Coupe was brought into India in a Completely Built Up (CBU) form, so spares would be a little tough to source.

You pay for the exclusivity and maintaining

this high quality, high tech machine takes a lot of time, money and effort, but in the end it’ll all be worth it. Isn’t that why you want to buy it in the first place?

Reliability Mercs have known to run without whimper in the harshest of terrain without complaint, and this Coupe is no different. Standing the test of time

ontrary to popular folklore, Fiat set shop in India as late as January 1997, and not the 50s, as people believe it did. How is it possible? People born in the 50s, 60s and 70s have lived and breathed Fiats. That’s because these Italian beauties were manufactured and sold in India under license

by Premier Automobiles Limited, and their cars ruled roost as the only competition they had was the venerable Hindustan Ambassador. PAL made the Fiat 1100-103 with suicide doors, and the Fiat 1100D, subsequently changing its name to Premier Padmini and much later made the Premier 118NE, based on the Fiat 124, but with a Nissan sourced engine and gearbox.

For all its high technology and award-winning engines, the company’s beginnings were very humble. FIAT is actually an acronym, the letters of which stand for Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino. The Company was established in the year 1899, in Corso Dante, in Turin, but manufactured its first vehicle in the year 1900 – the Fiat 31/2 CV, which had a rear mounted 679cc straight 2 petrol engine with a 3-speed manual transmission. The power was rated at 3.5hp, hence the name 31/2 or the 3.5. The car was more of a coach without a roof or a reverse gear.

So in effect, even though Fiat the company was not physically present in India, its cars continued to carry the name forward as easy to drive, easy to repair ‘modern’ cars! Their cars have stood the test of time and many of them can still be seen on the roads, especially in the black and yellow cab avatar in Mumbai.

So when Fiat wanted set up shop in India, Premier sold their business to Fiat, who in turn, introduced their first car, the Fiat Uno and became an instant hit as the car was bigger and had more space than the market leader, the Maruti 800 which was the market leader at that point of time, but the lack of dealer support killed the car. Fiat then went on to have a joint venture with Tata Motors. This tie-up did not do any good for Fiat as service issues cropped up all over India, and the company had to discontinue some of their offerings, leaving their customers high and dry. People still swear by some of Fiat’s offerings like the Palio 1.6 and the Palio 1.9 which are excellent cars even to date, but lack of dealer support and availability of spares ultimately killed them.

Despite all these problems, Fiat’s contribution to the modern Indian automobile scene is nothing short of great. Their award-winning 1.3 MultiJet Diesel engine is so efficient that most Indian manufacturers from Maruti to Tata use it in different states of tune, leading to it being dubbed as Indian National Engine. Even the recently launched Maruti S-Cross uses Fiat’s bigger 1.6 MultiJet Diesel engine. More than 20 cars in India from various manufacturers, are powered by the same Fiat 1.3 MJD engine!

The 1.3 MJD is the most efficient small diesel engine in the world and has won the International engine of the year award in the year 2005, in the 1.0-1.4 litre category, beating sixty engines built by its competitors, including Peugeot-Citroen and Ford’s 1.4 litre diesel engine, VW’s 1.4 litre FSI, Toyota’s 1.4 litre

Why do cars catch fire?

I

was driving in bumper to bumper city traffic the other day, when I noticed a car stop abruptly on the other side of the road and the occupants running away from it like they were escaping from a bomb. I couldn’t see the fire, but could see the heat waves over the bonnet area. Only then did I understand that what I had just witnessed was a car that caught fire. People nearby brought sand, water etc., and tried to douse the fire, but the bonnet and engine area was completely burnt.

The occupants were lucky to get out of the burning vehicle in one piece, but that incident got me wondering as to why that car caught fire, and if that could happen to my car too.

We do not know how many cars catch fire spontaneously in India, as statistics are hard to come by, but in the months of April and May, Chandigarh newspapers reported that over 28 cars caught fire in the city. Agreed, those months

are the hottest all over India, but cars are made to withstand these extreme temperatures. On closer inspection it was found that in more than half of the cars, owners had replaced the stock halogen headlamp bulbs with High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps. These lamps shine brighter than the halogen ones, but tend to crack due extreme heat, and leak argon / nitrogen from the bulbs, which catch fire on contact with any hot surface.

Most of the fires in India are electrical in nature, as we love to add cheap accessories that catch our fancy, starting from higher wattage bulbs for the headlights. This is the simplest quickfix we all have resorted to at one point of time or the other. Problem is, our vehicle’s wiring is made for the OEM bulb it comes with and is not made to take on extra load, leading to heating up the wiring system, melting the rubber sheath and shorting the wires, leading

to sparks… and since we do not ‘see’ what’s happening under the car’s bonnet, we are left to discover it the hard way, or shall we say the ‘hot’ way.

We love to accessorise our cars with aftermarket music systems, reversing sensors, reversing cameras, extra stop lamps, extra cabin lights, double horns etc., which are done at the neighbourhood car accessories-wala and the one doing the ‘modifications’ is usually a teen who’s just learnt the skill and wants to make a quick buck. What’s worrying is that wires usually run the length of the car from under the carpet area. Commonsense tells us that overloaded hot wires and carpets are a recipe for disaster.

Since cars traverse over rough terrain, jerks and shakes lead to loose connections at electrical connections like the radiator fans, ignition system, stoplights, interior lamps… where sparks can fly and ignite anything.

Though electricity is a major cause of fires, by no means is it the only one. Other modifications like adding a CNG/LPG tank, are also huge contributors in a fire. Engines generate extreme heat, turbochargers generate heat too – add to the mix, the ignition system – the distributor, wires, spark plugs which generate very high voltages to make the sparkplug ‘spark’… and all this under the tight confines of a closed bonnet!

Other fire starters are the fuel lines, which, if not maintained properly, leak highly combustible fuel onto hot engines. The tailpipe area is also another area which is dangerous. The temperature at the tailpipe is usually over 400 degrees, and the fuel tank is almost always directly above this superhot area … and it’s not hard to imagine how it would end. While

regular maintenance will usually take care of this, there are manufacturer related fires too.

Who in India can forget Nano’s catching fire due to a manufacturing defect?

All said and done, cars should be used within their tolerance limits. There have been instances of supercars like Lamborghinis catching fire after a round of hard revving to impress onlookers!

intervals when they recommend changing and checking certain parts, so that these incidents may be nipped in the bud. Go to the authorized service stations and get the modifications done, if you’re apprehensive about them, you could even go to large independent garages.

What’s worse is that these burning cars usually short the electricity in the car and prevent occupants from opening doors and windows, leading to them being roasted to death inside a closed car.

If certain fuses in your car blow out again and again, it’s a clear sign of a problem – attend to it right away. Lastly, do keep two fire extinguishers in the car. They’re cheap – just Rs. 200-500 apiece. Keep one in the car, and the other in the boot. In the event of a fire, you will not have enough time to grab the one inside the car, you could however grab the one in the boot and try to extinguish the fire.

So how do we save ourselves and our cars from these burning infernos? Simple – there’s a reason why manufacturers have service

ndia is predominantly hatchback country, where the top 10 cars sold are all hatches, basically because of their low investment and cramped city roads, but who in their right mind wouldn’t want a proper car, as in a Saloon? If our pockets permit it, we would readily trade our hatch for a Saloon. What we do not realize it that we CAN buy a Saloon for the price of a hatch, in the pre-owned segment. A couple of years ago, when Nissan introduced its Sunny in the Indian market, its advertisement had a couple talking about the neighbour having a caaaaar, while they had just a car… that pretty much sums up our ‘need’ to have a bigger car. Not only are they fodder for neighbourhood talk, you are put up on the social ladder. They are extremely practical too due to their being spacious and having a separate boot area for

luggage, while the interiors are luxurious, apart from the plethora of safety features built in.

Can we really get a Luxury Saloon for the price of an i10 or a Ritz? Of course yes. We have here six pre-owned saloons available in the market under Rupees 5 Lakhs. Go through them and you’ll understand why it makes a lot of sense buying these Caaaars. Do not be put off by the thousands of kilometers on the clock, as these cars are built to run for over a lakh kilometers, but do remember that like anything old, they need a lot of care and maintenance. Why buy a puny car with no safety features, basic interiors, flimsy build quality and cramped interiors, when you can get an entry-level luxury saloon?
