Message from OUR Chairman, Board of Trustees Dear friends of the Drexel School System; As we commence our fourth year as the Drexel School System, I am pleased to provide an update on several significant accomplishments in the past year. Our academic progress continues to be extraordinary, as reported more fully by Dr. Rolle below. We attribute this to our commitment to the Blended Learning Model of instruction, and the professional development and dedication of our teachers and administrators. Our partnership with the Blended Learning Academy at Santa Clara University is exceptionally strong, and we continue to look for additional ways to collaborate with the university, including the Effective Principal Program and the Academy Blended Learning. Among all the generous contribution to the Drexel Schools Foundation in the past year, two in particular have had a very positive impact on our operations. Shea Homes provided over $2 million for facilities improvements at 3 of our 7 schools last summer, and has pledged an additional $3 million for facilities improvements at current or future Drexel Schools. Also, John and Timi Sobrato have pledged $5 million over 7 years for tuition assistance throughout the Drexel System, which will enable more students to benefit from a Catholic education. We thank them, and all of you, for your support. One of the primary objectives in creating the Drexel School System 3 years ago was to reverse the trend of declining enrollment at the elementary and middle schools in the Diocese. When we commenced the 2017 school year, our enrollment was up about 4 % from the previous year and has continued to increase over the past few months. This occurred despite a decline in enrollment in the Diocese as a whole. At this point, we believe we have proved that the model has worked for our 7 initial schools. We also believe our model is scalable, and are now accepting applications from additional schools within the Diocese to join us. Of course, none of this would have been possible without your generosity and belief in our vision. Thank you. Sincerely Howard Graham Chairman, Board of Trustees Drexel Schools Foundation
Message from OUR Assistant Superintendent It is with great enthusiasm that I write this letter as the Assistant Superintendent of the Drexel School System- a cutting edge, reimagination of Catholic education that transforms how we are able to serve families in our Catholic schools. As we open our fourth year as a system, there is much to celebrate. The Drexel School system has reversed the trend in enrollment, netting 65 students during the 2015-2016 school year. In addition, the Drexel schools have established themselves as some of the highest performing educational institutions in the Diocese, the system averaging performance in the top 17% of the country in math and growing 6 percentile points across the system in reading in a single year. As a result of the system’s commitment to focusing on transparent communication and strategic action around data, the growth of the system has resulted in the implementation of the first of three phases of a new compensation plan. This new Blended Learning Educator Salary Schedule, BLESS, ties additional compensation to the positive gains at the individual Drexel schools and reflects the additional effort and education required of Drexel teachers. The Drexel School System is proud of all that has been accomplished, credited largely to systemic fidelity to the Strategic Plan. As a result of the stability across the Drexel sites, the Drexel System has announced the opening of an application process for Parish schools that would like to transition into Drexel schools. These new schools, if deemed an appropriate fit for the system, would open as Drexel schools in the fall of 2017. The success of the Drexel School System would not be possible without Bishop McGrath’s steadfast commitment to Catholic education, the generous support of our site and system donors, the active engagement and support of the Diocese of San Jose Department of Education and the evident talent and commitment of our Drexel School System faculty, staff and administration. I look forward to the good work that lies ahead as we continue to be inspired by our faith. As St. Katharine Drexel reminds us, “let us open wide our hearts. It is joy which invites us. Press forward and fear nothing”. GO DREXEL! Tara Rolle, Ed.D. Assistant Superintendent, Drexel School System Diocese of San Jose 3

“This is an opportunity for us to truly exist in Silicon Valley, because we are in the heart of it. To incorporate the technology component of things, to build a system or put into place something where the teachers are allowed to have more one on one time with the students and that hopefully you can integrate more programs because you are working with a finite X number of hours a day, so if you have a method by which you can get from point A to point B quicker, that allows you more time to do other things. Jasmine, Parent, Most Holy Trinity
