Welcome from the Dean University City Campus Orientation

Welcome to Drexel University!

On behalf of all the Colleges and Schools, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Drexel as you begin your exciting journey as a graduate student. Our faculty, professional staff and current graduate students are looking forward to welcoming you to our vibrant and thriving University. Our graduate programs emphasize academic rigor, real-world experience and supportive mentorship. Our students graduate with extensive training in their chosen fields, and prepared to make career decisions that best fit their abilities and aspirations.

Our graduates go on to shape the future of their chosen disciplines around the world.

Together with Student Life, International Students and Scholars Services (ISSS), the Graduate Student Association and various units across the University, we are pleased to host orientation programs designed to welcome you to Drexel and introduce you to the many resources available.

Drexel is fortunate to have an active Graduate Student Association (GSA), which is comprised of graduate students, elected annually, from programs across the University. Through its active Executive Board, the GSA represents graduate students and advocates for their scholarly and professional development. From research symposiums, academic panels, interdisciplinary workshops, writing boot camps to ski trips, soccer tournaments and happy hours, there is always something going on within the vibrant Drexel graduate community. All Drexel graduate students are encouraged to participate in GSA activities and you will have the opportunity to meet representatives of the GSA during Orientation to learn more.

The University leadership is committed to a range of initiatives aimed at enriching the many academic, research and experiential learning opportunities for which Drexel is widely recognized and that contribute to the "Drexel Difference" no matter what academic program you are pursuing.

11:30AM—1:00PM: Dragon Expo Resource Fair & Taste of Philly Lunch Buffet Great Court, Main Building Meet your graduate student peers while learning more about Drexel programs, student organizations and local businesses. Representatives from a variety of student service offices and academic units will be available.

Enjoy a sampling of staple Philadelphia food items, including cheesesteaks and hoagies, soft pretzels and Tastykakes!

4:00—6:00PM: Graduate Student Social Wahoo’s Tacos and More Enjoy food and refreshments with fellow graduate students at a local hangout and learn more about the Graduate Student Association (GSA) and other graduate student organizations.

International Student Workshop MANDATORY for new F-1 international graduate students

Graduate Student Lounge Open to all graduate students, the Graduate Student Lounge is an essential resource for meeting and studying, as well as a convenient place for hosting graduate student events and large student organization meetings. The Graduate Student Lounge is located on the lower level of Main Building (Room 010A) and provides coffee and various equipment and supplies for meetings and events.

The Graduate Student Association (GSA) represents graduate students and oversees the more than 20 active graduate student organizations. Student Health Insurance and Immunizations All full–time domestic graduate students and all international graduate students MUST be in compliance with Drexel’s Health Insurance and Immunization policies. If you have external health insurance, you may waive Drexel health insurance with proof of external coverage that meets the University’s minimum requirements. For more information about health insurance, please visit the Health Insurance website at http:// drexel.edu/counselingandhealth/insurance-immunizations/health-insurance/. Please visit the Aetna Student Health website to enroll in or waive student health insurance at https://www.aetnastudenthealth.com/.

The deadline to enroll in or waive student health insurance is September 30, 2018.

After this date, you will automatically default into the Drexel student health insurance plan. Once the annual insurance rate of $2,469 is placed on your student account, you will be insured for the full academic year. For instructions on how to Enroll/Waive Health Insurance, visit http://drexel.edu/counselingandhealth/insurance-immunizations/ health-insurance/How-to-Enroll-or-Waive/.

Doctoral students with full-time assistantships (teaching, research or graduate) who are receiving a health insurance subsidy from the Graduate College must be enrolled in the Drexel student health insurance plan. Once you have enrolled in the plan, please request that your department program manager/graduate advisor send a copy of your appointment letter to the Graduate College to secure the subsidy.

All full-time domestic graduate students and all international students must comply with the Immunization policy of the University.
